Teeter-bed (i.e., hindered-bed) separators are used throughout the mineral processing industry for both classification and density separation. The high capacity and sizing characteristics of these units make them ideal for feed preparation prior to coarse flotation (+0.100 mm) circuits. Teeter-bed separators are typically easy to control with two basic operating parameters, including fluidization water rate and bed level. However, data show that these two parameters greatly interact with one another. Given this finding, a high-level automatic control scheme was developed and implemented on a full-scale separator. In addition, dialogue with plant operators has led to several simple changes to an already established design that improves operational and maintenance characteristics.

A process for the conversion of stibnite (Sb2Sj) concentrates, crude antimony oxide, or metal to a pure cubic antimonous oxide (senarmontite) has been developed on a laboratory scale. The conversion of stibnite to senarmontite has been piloted. The high purity of the final product is the result of forming antimony trichloride as a low temperature distillable intermediate. To obtain the antimony trichloride the stibnite, or crude oxide is slurried in molten antimony trichloride and reacted with gaseous hydrogen chloride. Antimony metal is oxidized to the trichloride with chlorine. The hydrogen sulfide produced from the hydro- chlorination of stibnite can be upgraded to a strength of 95% or greater for further treatment. The crude antimony trichloride is separated from the gangue by a preliminary evaporation and then is fractionally distilled and the trichloride distillate has less than 50ppm of arsenic and lead combined (the most troublesome impurities in antimony processing). The purified antimony trichloride is then hydrolyzed with sodium or ammonium hydroxide to produce the cubic form of antimonous oxide (senarmontite) to the exclusion of the rhombic form (valentinite) which is photosensitive. The advantage of this process is the ability to treat a wide range of antimony ores, concentrates, and metal to yield a high purity oxide in a controllable range of particle sizes.

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more efficient and effective use of rock dust. A prototype, flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed in line between the ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over a period of three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess the changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to the operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and were normalized per foot of advance by the continuous miner. Results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by over 91% when operating the scrubber. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced over 342 million tons of coal [EIA 2013]. During the cutting, crushing, and transport of this coal, dust is generated and can be entrained in the air ventilating the mine. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.400-1 (30 CFR§ 75.400-1) defines float coal dust as particles of coal that can pass a No. 200 sieve. These coal particles can be carried by the ventilating air into return entries before settling onto mine surfaces [NIOSH 2006]. If this float coal dust becomes re-entrained into the airstream, it can propagate an explosion throughout mine workings [Harris et al. 2010]. Application of rock dust in underground coal mines is required by Federal regulation as a means of preventing the propagation of explosions by float coal dust. In order to meet Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.403 (30 CFR § 75.403), 80% incombustible content must be maintained in the composition of dust deposited in mine entries [76 Fed. Reg. 35968 (2011)]. This fraction of incombustible content is increased if elevated levels of methane are present. In order to maintain the required incombustible content, frequent or constant application of rock dust is undertaken by mine operators. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.2 (30 CFR § 75.2) defines the properties of the rock dust that must be used by mine operators."

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

"Genoa is a very distinctive city located between mountains and the sea and infrastructural upgrading works often have to deal with the intersection of existing infrastructures. This is the case for the new railway tunnel construction between the stations of Brignole and Principe which under-cross two existing double-track tunnels in operation. The latter have been constructed with masonry bricks and the vertical distance between old and new tunnels is approximately 1m. Due to rock characteristics and the urban environment, stability and vibrations control are the main issues. Consolidation work with the fore-poling method and a specific sequence of excavation, primary lining and final lining support have been designed to assure stability and settlement control. A hard rock road-header has been used to assure vibration control. Finally, a real time monitoring has been implemented. The article presents monitoring and back-analysis results of the under-crossing of the existing tunnels. GENERAL LAYOUT OF WORKS The Genoa railway junction constitutes an integral part of the Ventimiglia-Genoa-Novara-Milan railway line route and it is included amongst the railway systems of the Tyrrhenian-Northern European multi-modal corridor (corridor of the two seas or corridor VII Genoa-Rotterdam). The main aims of the project concern the upgrading of the existing lines and the separation of the long-distance passenger and freight traffic flows from those of a regional and metropolitan type. The project includes: •,Completion of the connection with the port of Genoa Voltri and the Italy-France coastal route. •,Interconnection with the future Terzo Valico dei Giovi mountain pass route towards Milan. •,Upgrading of the Genoa Voltri – Genoa Brignole main line to four/six tracks. Rearrangement of the systems at the Genoa Voltri, Genoa Sampierdarena and Genoa Brignole Stations, reorganisation of the services in the Genoa Terralba area and interchangeability with the metropolitan system complete the design activities. The contract which includes civil and technology works is divided into four construction lots (ref. Figure 1):"

A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of permeability by improved fracture connectivity by micro-hydrofracturing. A generic two-dimensional percolation model has been developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park Mine has been used to establish statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Results of statistical anlyses of the field data and examples of the use of percolation model are presented.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

A geological and geophysical study was con-ducted at the area of Stylos, Hania in order to study the possible mechanisms of saltwater contamination. A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

The fluidized bed is an effective method for investigating retorting phenomena and possibly a commercial means of retorting oil shale. Both were examined by Sinclair Oil Corp. (now part of Atlantic Richfield Co.) in the period 1.965 to 1968. The results of the work show that presence of an oxidizing environment during retorting results in loss of oil yield which indicates that vapor phase oil burns in preference to combustion of coke on spent shale. This has implications for several types of retorts. Correlation of the results of this work with that of other investigators shows that the partial pressure of retorting products in contact with oil shale during retorting has an effect on yield. Consideration of hardware indicates that there are several possibilities for commercial embodiment. As a companion to shaft-type retorts the fluidized bed could have good potential. Realistic assessment of costs suggests that further development may have to await commercialization of another process. The existence of a plant in which to test prototype size would markedly reduce such development costs. Results Preliminary development work with the apparatus was carried out using a fluidized bed of sand, as explained later, with the entire system brought up to temperature and flows stabilized. The shale was injected rapidly in a slug (batch) which had small mass compared to that of the high temperature system to make the reaction approach isothermality with reasonable approximation of instantaneous preheating. Typically, the temperature in the center of the bed dropped from 900°F to 600°F one minute after batch addition. It returned to 750' within three minutes and 900° within seven minutes. Obviously, the bed was quenched but it recovered rapidly. Average bed temperatures of 700' to 1020°F were examined to compare the effect of temperature with published results. Yields In the 700°F range were only 10 to 15%, of Fischer Assay (FA). Above about 950'F, oil yields decreased and gas yields increased. Nitrogen was used first as the fluidizing gas to provide a chemically inert medium. Incept for an insignificant dip at 895"F, Figure 1, oil yield was not affected by retorting temperature in the 800° to 900' range as long as residence time was adequate (16 minutes). At 925°F, the oil yield was some 103% FA. With further increase in temperature, the yield decreased to 86% FA at 1015°F. INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Weak demand for metals and consequent low metal prices resulted in continuation of the depressed state of US mineral exploration activity through 1983. Data collected by Resources for the Future Inc. and The Pennsylvania State University for a cooperative study on mineral exploration activity indicate that US exploration in 1983 fell by as much as 25% from 1982 levels. Precious metals remained the focus of most exploration efforts, as gold and silver prices remained attractive compared to base metals. Reports of 1983 domestic exploration and development activities in several industry journals indicates that about 85% to 90% of those projects were directed primarily at gold and silver. Gold exploration included work by several companies on Carlin- type disseminated gold deposits in Nevada, geological prospecting and drilling in the Wenatchee Gold Belt in Washington, and interest in lode and placer gold properties in California, especially by several small Canadian firms. Precious metals exploration projects were also reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah. There was also tome precious metal exploration activity in the eastern US. Development continued at the Ropes gold mine near Ishpeming, MI, and companies explored historic gold-producing areas in the Southeast. Some exploration for nonprecious metals took place last year. Stratabound copper-silver deposits were examined in western Montana, and US Borax continued exploring molybdenum resources in the Misty Fjords area in Alaska. Work on these projects during 1983 may have been stimulated by time limits on the availability of certain federal lands for exploration more than by projected improvements in metal markets. During 1983, several papers were published on mineral exploration strategies and the future of US exploration. David Watson of Raymond Kaiser Engineers, in a paper presented at the 1983 AMC Mining Convention, forecast increased exploration activity for gold and silver because of world economic conditions. He added that antimony, manganese, chromium, graphite, mercury, tantalum, tin, and barite are also likely targets based on their limited domestic reserve availability. He cited concern over reported subsidized mineral production by foreign producers and US regulatory and land-planning policies as retarding mineral exploration activity. Douglas Cook of Freeport Exploration Co., at the same meeting, presented a paper that showed that a 1950-75 period of vigorous exploration has been followed by a period where acquisition has replaced exploration as the predominant means of acquiring new mineral properties. At a December IIASA conference on "The Economics of Mineral Exploration," in Vienna, Austria, A. Rose and R. Eggert of The Pennsylvania State University pointed out that recent exploration decisions tend to rely more on evaluating production costs and comparing them with existing deposits, rather than on return of

Despite a recession that's crippling many US industries, and a UMW strike that wasn't supposed to happen, 1981 was a fairly good year for the coal industry. The big news was record-high exports. Queues of colliers waited for weeks at Hampton Roads, VA, and Baltimore, MD, to load coal destined for Europe and the Far East. Private industry and city governments began scrambling for a share of the export boom, and port developments were planned in nearly every coastal state. Coal exports jumped from about 82 Mt (90 million st) in 1980 to a record 83 Mt (92 million st) in 1981, according to the National Coal Association. NCA projects exports to remain at this level 1982. The following statistics illustrate industry performance in other areas: • Demand by domestic utilities and overseas customers was so strong that total US consumption reached 760 Mt (838 million st) in 1981. DOE predicts another record year in 1982, with consumption forecast at 804 Mt (886 million st). • 1981 production of 730 Mt (805 million st) was just slightly below the record high of 748 Mt (824 million st) in 1980, "a remarkable figure considering that UMW production was shut off for 72 days during 1981," says NCA President Carl Bagge. Production in 1982 should set a new record, 800 Mt (880 million st). • Eastern coal production fell 7.4%, while western production-largely unaffected by the UMW strike-rose almost 10%. NCA says eastern output will rise almost 12% to 538 Mt (593 million st) in 1982, and western production will increase by 6.6% to 266 Mt (293 million st). • Production per manhour is improving. After the strike, weekly production hit the 16 Mt (18 million st) mark and has approached the 18 Mt (20 million st) per week level. •Coal's share of the US electric generation market increased from 51% in 1980 to 53% in 1981. Electric utilities are coal's biggest customer, and their financial situation is precarious. Inflation has thwarted necessary expansion plans, while shifting environmental regulations have played havoc with construction costs. Utilities increased power sales by only 2.5% in 1981; NCA predicts that utility coal use will increase 4% in 1982. The Association's long-range forecast indicates that growth in electricity demand in the immediate future will be much lower than in the 1960s and 70s. Administration Impact Industry optimism following the election of Ronald Reagan and a Republican-dominated Senate didn't survive the year. One bright spot was the appointment of James Watt as Interior Secretary, and his promises to review surface mining regulations and resume leasing. The administration, however, has declined to support federal eminent domain for slurry pipelines and expects port users to foot most of the bill for expansions and improvements. This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock-mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. The floor-heave and nofloor- heave phenomena at a western US coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria (i.e., Mohr–Coulomb or Hoek–Brown failure criterion). The previous numerical study demonstrated these phenomena using a user-defined model of the s-shaped brittle failure criterion in conjunction with a spalling process in the FLAC3D numerical modeling software. The results of the FLAC3D modeling agreed with the observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system. However, the FLAC3D model adopted many assumptions and simplifications that were not very realistic from a physical or mechanical perspective. To overcome the limitations of the FLAC3D model, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. The effect of stress rotation in the mining-induced stress field was considered by using a different geometry of rock fractures in the coal seam. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) were also considered by using Monte Carlo simulations. Consequently, the 3DEC models using the DFN technique resulted in predictions of floor heave that agreed with observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

INTRODUCTION The basis for any measures in radiation protection is the quantitative assessment of the radiation exposure. Due to the extensive requirement in health physics manpower and related cost it is necessary to develop certain criteria regarding the necessity of monitoring and the selection of population groups to be monitored. Depending on the overall objective of the particular programme, the specific requirements for the measurement of atmospheric levels of radon, thoron and their daughters for practical radiation protection purposes differ significantly for those in the case of research applications, such as use of data for epidemiological studies. As part of the OECD-NEA Programme on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring Task Group 1 reviewed available models for lung dosimetry in the case of inhalation of radon 222, radon 220 and their daughters (James et al., 1981). Using defined reference atmospheres for underground- and open-pit mining conditions as well as for dwellings, normalized conversion factors were calculated for the mean bronchial dose (mGy) per Working Level Month exposure (WLM). Task Group 2 discussed the features and adequacy of the Working Level (WL)-concept as a physical correlative of the absorbed lung dose and its limits of confidence and accuracy (Johnson and Leach, 1981). The WL-concept was found acceptable for radiation protection purposes provided that modifying factors like particle size, unattached fraction and respiratory minute volume did not cause the effective dose equivalent per WLM as calculated by either the James-Birchall or Jacobi-Eisfeld lung models to be more than 50 % above that given by ICRP of 0.01 Sv/WLM. For application in epidemiological studies the WLconcept is considered acceptable if the calculated absorbed dose to the tissue does not vary by more than 50 % (at the 95 % confidence level) from that given for defined reference conditions. In the following, objectives and requirements for the measurement of radon, thoron and their daughters are discussed for operational health physics routine and special research applications according to the scheme outlined in Fig. 1.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1 : 100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

Metallurgical processing of gold ores in positive water balance environments has been facing decreasing discharge concentrations in permits and additional requirements to pass acute toxicity testing before discharges will be allowed to native fisheries. In response to the challenge to meet 0.005 mg/L free cyanide guidance for discharges to fresh water fisheries, the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Cyanide Task Group has undertaken an interlaboratory study for the free cyanide method in the metallurgical processing cyanide detoxified reverse osmosis effluent to determine if the quantitation limit for the method could be lowered from the current 0.009 mg/L free cyanide (1) to less than the 0.005 mg/L guidance concentration. Results of the testing are presented below.
