Niagara Mohawk, like other northern coal users, has long experienced increased costs during winter months as a consequence of handling frozen coal. These costs include operating labor, maintenance labor and materials, equipment rental, fuel for thawing, demurrage, carrying costs for excess coal inventory and substitution of higher cost electrical generation for lost production capacity. In the winter of 1978-79, limited trials of several coal freeze conditioning agents were made to determine whether these would provide a cost-effective means of reducing the problems of handling frozen coal. Since these trials were generally effective, the Coal Purchasing Department arranged that all rail coal received during the 1979-80 winter from early December to mid March would be treated at the mines during loading. Inasmuch as the treatment costs are themselves appreciable and our various coal suppliers made a variety of choices of chemical supplier and equipment for application, an attempt was made to evaluate the unloading performance of each train received at the two generating stations which use coal as an aid in the future optimization of the use of freeze conditioning agents. These stations also receive coal by truck but this coal is not treated because of the short hauling time. The C.R. Huntley Station in Tonawanda, NY has a capacity of 800MW and burns about 5000 tons of coal per day during the winter months. The coal is primarily from central and western Pennsylvania but one source in southern Kentucky is also used regularly. Most of the Pennsylvania coal is washed and the fines are thermally dried. The coal is delivered in unit trains made up of mixed cars of 60, 75, and 90 ton capacity. Time between loading and arrival at the station averaged five days and ranged from three to eleven during the 1979-80 winter season.

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

The territory of Czechoslovakia is well endowed in deposits of a variety of industrial minerals. At present, 29 different types of industrial minerals are mined from some 600 individual deposits in Bohemia and Moravia only. About half of those production centres involves structural materials like aggregate and common brick clays and loams. A significant proportion of industrial minerals produced in Czechoslovakia are exported. Destinations of main products are shown in Figure 1. Production of industrial minerals in Czechoslovakia has a long history. Glass has been produced since the 14th century, sulphuric acid since 1578, graphite since 1750, and chinaware since 1790, to name just a few; but most of the present production comes from deposits developed during the past forty years. For a variety of reasons, only about 30 per cent of registered and explored industrial minerals deposits in the country are in production (Table 1). Two of the reasons may be the complexity of processing or conflicting interests of parties involved, but lack of market research, investment funds, or processing capacity have also had an impact on the level of utilization of the resource base.

In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese. The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

The paper describes a practical methodology based on numerical modelling for the prediction of progressive failure of underground mine stopes with cable bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 stope at Kidd Creek Mine, Timmins, Ontario is presented. The stope was mined by blasthole open stoping in 1986 as a lead stope within a mining block between 36-1 and 38-2 levels. Initially designed to peak at 38-2 level, the stope back caved upwards approximately 40m towards 36-1 level. Cable bolts were installed above the stope from 36-1 level after caving had begun. The stope eventually stopped to cave when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. The paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modelling results of the case study. Numerical modelling is carried out using a finite element package known as e-z tools which has, among other things, a special cable/rockbolt simulation capability.

"Following a successful solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant demonstration in 2016, CYANEX® 600 has been used commercially to recover molybdenum from concentrate leach liquor since March 2017. Consistent with the piloting results, the commercial plant has achieved expected molybdenum recovery, a significant reduction in base consumption, and a step-change improvement in physical performance. This paper highlights the optimization activities and plant performance from startup through normal operation. INTRODUCTION Historically, tertiary amines have been the most commonly used extractant for molybdenum and rhenium recovery. Tertiary amines utilize a protonation of the ligand combined with an anion exchange mechanism as proposed in equations (1-2). R3N + H+ ???R3NH + (1) 4R3NH+ + Mo8O264- ???(R3NH+)4Mo8O264- (2) In addition to the transfer of Mo and Re, the amine transfers acid and other anions to the strip liquor. The undesirable transfer of other species increases base consumption during stripping, impacting operating costs. Additionally, lower solubility of molybdenum-amine complexes create operational challenges, resulting in diminished physical performance. The presence of colloidal Si in concentrate leach liquors and the formation of Pickering Emulsions adds to the physical plant performance challenges with the amine extractant. CYANEX® 600, a phosphinic acid-based extractant, uses a cation exchange mechanism proposed by equation (3). 2(H2R2) + MoO22+ ??(HR2)2MoO2 + 2H+ (3) The cationic exchange mechanism eliminates chemical transfer of acid and other anionic impurities and avoids some of the physical challenges of the amine extractant (emulsion and 3rd phase formation). In addition, the reagent offers high selectivity for Mo over Re, which may be desirable in certain moly pressure oxidation (POX) flowsheets. Alkali base (ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, etc.) is used for molybdenum stripping. Therefore, reduction or elimination of chemical acid transfer from extract can significantly reduce base consumption in strip. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was completed to evaluate the use of CYANEX® 600 for molybdenum recovery at Freeport-McMoRan’s Bagdad operation. The test work and pilot demonstration confirmed a reduction in base consumption along with improved selectivity. In addition, the evaluation highlighted a step-change improvement in physical performance over the incumbent amine extractant. The decision was made to convert the commercial operation to CYANEX® 600 in March 2017."

Whilst coalmining in the United Kingdom has been synonymous with longwall mining practice there have been changes in recent times which have enabled not only an extension in the length of the face to be worked but also in the ability to extract both thick and thinner seams. Additionally the industry has taken a positive view in the extension of retreat methods of extraction applied for different reasons both to particularly thick and specially thin seams. To permit development of a flexible programme to meet these diverse needs, it has been necessary to design machinery along with mining systems specially suited to these requirements. In reviewing current UK thinking special emphasis is made on the extraction of thinner seams generally of higher quality coal at moderate depths with a commentary on some recent results.

To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

The properties of interfacial water at hydrophilic surfaces are of great importance in many technological areas including flotation, solid-liquid separation, dispersion and emulsions, flocculation, adsorption, corrosion, and soil contamination. This paper examines the use of FTIR/internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS) to study the spectral characteristics of interfacial water at silica surfaces. FTIR spectra were characterized by consideration of the OH stretching region (3000-3800 cm-1) associated with the vibrational spectra of interfacial water. The broad peak in this region was deconvoluted in order to isolate overlapping spectral features that describe the nature of hydrogen bonding in interfacial water. Three distinct bands were found; -3600 cm-1 (free OH), -3400 cm-1 (incomplete tetrahedral coordination), and -3240 cm-1 (complete tetrahedral coordination) and the variation of their intensities with pH was found to be significant. This spectral information helps to explain orientation and bond ordering of interfacial water molecules at hydrophilic surfaces.

The ore at this new underground operation is a massive sulfide breccia with high copper values. A major highway and electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface orebodv. The mining method being used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner together with a single boom, hydraulic jumbo is used for the mining. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.

In late 2007 Neptune Minerals Plc. commissioned Genesis - a leading consultancy and engineering company affiliated to the Technip group - to undertake a Seafloor Mining Conceptual Study for mining of Seafloor Massive Sulphides (?SMS?) in Neptune?s New Zealand licenses. A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. The aim of the study, completed in April 2008, was to evaluate alternative existing marine technologies for seafloor mining, ore lifting, dewatering and surface offtake, considering the following parameters: ? The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03 in April 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB P09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

IDOM combines inventory theory, dynamic programming, computer simulation and interactive technique to formulate a production schedule for open-pit mines. This new method has been successfully used in metal mines of China for years.

Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Section 516 of Public Law (PL) 95-87, commonly known as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), requires that underground coal mine operators must "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." Implied in the constraints of Section 516(b)(1) of SMCRA is a determination of what constitutes "material damage" to surface structures, renewable resource lands, and the capacity for sequential land use following underground mining. The authors have already briefly addressed the subject of damage criteria in relation to surface structures (Bhattacharya et al, 1984). In this paper, an attempt is made to provide quantitative guidelines to ascertain material damage to renewable resource lands, although the data available to establish these criteria are considerably more limited than is the case for surface structures. Besides, many more variables influence the severity of the impact at a given site, making the task of assigning stringent ground movement limits even more complex. This often necessitated use of professional judgement and occasional reverting to a qualitative approach. Hence the reader is cautioned at the very outset that the quantitative limits presented herein are approximate and are primarily intended to serve as rough guides for ascertaining the extent of damage to the renewable resource lands under consideration, and that depending on site-specific conditions the actual damage incurred may differ significantly from that predicted by the proposed criteria. The authors, however, feel that the criteria suggested are somewhat conservative, but realistic. The actual damage observed should generally be less severe than predicted by these criteria. It may also be clarified here that the term "subsidence", as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface and subsurface effects associated with the mining of minerals and not only the vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry is not unaffected by the drought: not only is research lagging, but hard- pressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. This paper's thesis is not that mining companies should shower universities with philanthropy, but that a quid pro quo ought to be exacted: a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that may lend itself to adoption by our industry.

Several shale-hosted Pb-Zn-Ag deposits have been discovered in the northwestern Brooks Range, Alaska. Best known among these are the Red Dog, Drenchwater Creek, Lik, Ferric Creek, Hot Dog Creek, and Competition Creek deposits. They occur in a tectonically disturbed sequence of of Mississippian to Triassic shales, argillites, and cherts, and most are spatially associated with volcanic rocks. The sulfides are hosted in shales as disseminations, banded layers, massive lenses, and crosscutting veins. Detailed geologic descriptions of sulfide prospects in the Brooks Range were given by Tailleur (1970), Nokleberg and Winkler (1978), and Plahuta and Robinson (1979). Lange et al. (1980) discussed the formation of the deposits, the nature of the mineralizing solutions, and the temperature of formation on the basis of sulfur isotope studies. More recently, Harrover et al. (1982) detected a correlation between sulfide mineralization and high-temperature formation of charts associated with the sulfides by oxygen Isotope and chert crystallite size determinations.
