In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

To most of you present here the word "refractories" is not new and you are familiar with the materials and use. To many people though the question is asked, "What are refractoriness and what are they used for?" Refractories are non-metallic products which are so resistant too melting at very high temperatures that they can be used for building or lining furnaces of all kinds. A large variation occurs in the size, form, and composition depending on the service for which they are intended. They are made from a wide variety of raw materials, of which fire clay and quartzite are used in largest quantities. Other refractory raw materials include magnesite, chrome, diaspore, bauxite, kyanite, sillimanite, olivine, zircon, and many others. Most of these are assembled from-widely-'separated points in the United States while others come from the far corners of the earth. Chrome is imported from the Philippines and South Africa, and, to a lesser extent, Turkey and Greece Kyanite and sillimanite come: from India and bauxite from the Guianas. And there's "magnesite from brines," produced in chemical plant's by treatment of sea water or inland deep-well brines with hydrated lime. The proportion of magnesia available in sea water is so small, less than one pound from 500 pounds of water,, that millions of gallons must be pumped and processed each day in a sea water magnesite plant. The realm of refractory raw materials, therefore, is very extensive and continues to grow because of the endeavor to find-better raw materials from which to produce better products for refractory service.

This paper is intended to describe the utilization of Western subbituminous coal as used in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares this coal's characteristics with those of a typical Midwestern and Eastern coal as a base and reviews the various design considerations when blends of these coals are used. The effects of blending various low-sulfur Western coals with Midwestern or Eastern coals to achieve a predetermined sulfur dioxide emission and the resulting alteration in the coal characteristics as they apply to utilization are also reviewed. The blending of coals as one means of complying with sulfur dioxide regulations will take on increasing importance as the various deadlines for compliance with new and existing regulations approach. We must first consider the availability of these low-sulfur coals; and insofar as the Eastern low-sulfur coals have been mined for many years, we have focused our attention on the availability of the coal reserves west of the Mississippi River in the United States, as this is the area to which many people are turning in order to meet this requirement.

The study explores a novel process to sinter porous iron ore with improved productivity and quality. The iron ore is pre-processed with calcined lime to temporarily close pores, preventing water absorption during granulation. This enhances reaction kinetics and early slag formation during sintering, resulting in significant improvements in sinter productivity, product yield, and cold strength property.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other industrial minerals production from New Mexico includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. A mutant strain of Pseudomonas paucimobilis is utilized to effectively degrade and or remove 90-98% of cyanide, thiocyanate, toxic heavy metals and ammonia from a cyanidation mill process and mine discharge maximum of 21,000 m3/d (5.5 MGD). The performance of high alumina refractory subjected to high compressive loads and high temperatures is an area in which operating experience is quite limited. This paper documents the results of five months of operation of a combustion chamber lined with 83 pct alumina brick subjected to compressive stresses as high as 45psi and hot face temperatures of about 2750°F. It also describes a method for predicting long term subsidence results based on the limited information available in standard hot load limit tests. Descriptions of the chamber itself and the pilot plant upon which its design was based are included.

The increasing demand for coal and depletion of shallow depth reserves are pushing towards deeper mining. In deeper coal mines with multiseam workings, the problem of ventilation surges many folds primarily related to air quantity requirement, heat, humidity and spontaneous heating/fire in goaved (gobbed) out areas. The paper describes the design of a new approach to improve the ventilation system of a real-life deep underground coal mine with multiseam workings. For this, the ventilation problem of one deep underground coal mine 6&7 pits Bhutgoria Amalgamated Colliery of Tata Steel Ltd. with multiseam workings has been studied in detail to determine an appropriate solution. A ventilation survey of the mine and computer simulation of the ventilation network has been carried out to reach a practical solution. Ventilation survey results have been analysed to develop a representative ventilation network of the mine for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Further, computer simulation of the ventilation network of the mine has been performed to virtually verify the application of a highcapacity booster fan in the present ventilation circuit without disturbing the vulnerable areas. Field validation is also carried out after the implementation of the solution in the mine to determine its efficacy. Thus, the findings of this paper can be directly applied for the installation of booster fans to achieve the required air quantity in deep underground coal mines with multiseam workings having spontaneous combustion liabilities of upper seam goaved out areas.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

A field representative modeling of the gob behavior is critical for the understanding of the associated mechanics of strata behavior in longwall workings. The findings of theoretical models and laboratory tests on the simulated gob material have shown the strain hardening behavior of the gob material. The double-yield material model, which is a built-in constitutive model in FLAC3D, has significant potential to simulate the gob compaction process as it represents materials which undergo irreversible compaction in addition to shear yielding. Apart from this, several researchers have attempted using modified elastic model or applied nodal force in reaction to the strain in the gob area as per the well-known theoretical relations to meet this requirement. Although these models can simulate the mechanical response of the gob for subcritical and critical extraction widths, they do not apply to supercritical extraction width as the gob stress may exceed the in situ stress level in such cases. For overcoming these limitations, a standard approach has been developed and validated in this paper, which can be used for simulating the gob behavior in supercritical longwall workings as well. The complete study is divided into two stages wherein the laboratory scale compression test on the simulated gob material has been numerically replicated to develop preliminary confidence followed by a parametric study of the double-yield constitutive parameters for a rational estimation of their values in different conditions. The calibrated model has been used for verifying its results by plane strain modeling of two different longwall workings, using well-established empirical and analytical findings and field observations. The approach suggested in this study can be used for the efficient modeling of the gob behavior of longwall panels under varying geo-mining conditions without compromising the accuracy of the numerical model. The meticulously validated model can be helpful in rational estimation of stress redistributions around the gob area apart from load transfer on the barrier pillar.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

This paper first discusses the physicochemical cleaning methods used to process fines followed by an analysis of the subprocesses of froth flotation and the adverse effects of slimes and particle oxidation. These subprocesses include the phenomena of interception, contact, adhesion and levitation. Preventive and corrective measures to combat the generation of fines and their effects are suggested. Preventive measures include controlled grinding, limited liberation, flotation at coarser sizes. Means of preventing oxidation and/or removing oxidation products are a1 so discussed. Corrective measure to increase recovery include intensive aeration, aggregation of particles, intensive mixing, increased retention time, and reduction of detachment. Measures leading to improves selectivity involve means to reduce slime coating, achieve selective mineralization of bubbles and minimize entrapment.

In 2011, the value of mineral production increased in the United States for the second consecutive year (Table 1). Production increased modestly for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, and price increases, especially for precious metals, resulted in increases in the value of production. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates. U.S. apparent mineral consumption (industrial) of 11 mineral commodities decreased substantially from 2005 to 2010 (aluminum, cadmium, cement, copper, iron, lead, salt, soda ash, steel, tin and zinc). Data for 2011 were not calculated, but the data show a sustained decrease (especially for the metals) preceding the recession through 2010, so consumption seems to be behaving differently than production and GDP. After continued decline following the 2008?2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement during 2011, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, and gypsum ? mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Crushed stone production, however, continued to decline.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the re-search, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This paper highlights NIOSH?s research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan and if appropriate training is provided.

Efficient particle classification is essential to enhance gravity and magnetic separation stages in one iron ore beneficiation plant. This study investigates the use of high-frequency screens to process finely ground iron ore, focusing on two size cuts: 400 μm and 100 μm. Pilot-scale trials were performed on four ore blends using a full-scale screening unit. A total of 48 tests were conducted, evaluating the effects of panel aperture, solids concentration, wash water, and feed particle size distribution. Results showed that wash water improved efficiency by up to 5%, while a solids concentration near 40% w/w delivered high separation performance with minimal ultra-fines in oversize streams. Apertures slightly larger than the target cut sizes yielded better precision in particle separation. Feed particle size distribution had limited impact on efficiency. The investigation successfully identified optimal screening conditions, including aperture selection, to achieve the most effective separation performance for downstream concentration processes.

"How Wall Street Darling Molycorp Undermined the U.S. Economy, Degraded our National Security and Distorted the Global Economic Balance and How These Falsehoods Continue to be Promoted Even Today INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY In 2007 the Molycorp Mountain Pass rare earth mine was resurrected from its desert-grave in California by its then-owner Chevron Mining. Responding to elevated rare earth prices Chevron began processing on-site rare earth concentrates left over from past mining operations that were terminated in 1998i. Chinese demand had sparked what was being described as a commodities super-cycleii. Commodity prices were on the move. Wall Street smelled opportunity. In 2008 Goldman Sachs, Pegasus Partners, Resource Capital Funds, Traxys North America LLC and Carint Group LLC acquired the mining assets from Chevron. In an environment of ever-declining ethical standards and regulatory consequences the private capital group and their investment bankers would bring Molycorp to market. Molycorp, with its high powered investment banking team of Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morganiii, easily dominated the contest. Molycorp promoted itself, largely based on its past operating history and proven reserves, as the best company to challenge China’s monopoly control over the production of rare earths: a group of elements critical to most advanced technologies and U.S. defense systemsiv. Most of Wall Street’s hottest investment sectors were dependent on these materials: alternative energy, green technologies, computing, personal communications, advanced electronics and defense systems. By late 2010 there were dozens of prospective rare earth start-up ‘mining companies’ seeking capital. Eventually the number of prospective rare earth mining companies seeking capital exceeded 400, despite the reality that supply requirements of this market were disproportionally small when compared to other natural resource sectorsv. In the world of finance ‘smart money’ picks the winners. Consequently just twovi projects attracted nearly all of the capital (Molycorp and Lynas). Wall street picked Molycorpvii. This paper will primarily focus on Molycorp. By early 2010 the words “Molycorp” and “Rare Earths” electrified many people in the mining industry, most non-Chinese manufacturing technology companies, U.S. & allied defense contractors, technocrats in the U.S. national security community and eager investors across most of the world’s stock markets. It was the hottest story of the yearviii. The financial, technology and defense press coverage verged on euphoric: heaping fuel on fuel until the highly combustible Molycorp-pyre cast a long shadow over all of its rivalsix. When the IPO match was lit the spectacular flaming pyre sucked all of the oxygen out of the rare earth spacex. Molycorp was ranked the most lucrative IPO of 2010, resulting in record breaking profits to its private investors and massive returns for its early stock holding investors."

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. This study is initiated to investigate the efficiency of separation of mineral slimes using electroflotation as compared to that of column and conventional flotation techniques. Important parameters such as collector concentration, pH, current density, aeration rate, etc., have been studied. The results indicate that electroflotation can be used more efficiently in processing rutile slimes (10 µ) under certain operating conditions.

Minerals appraisers/valuers often find great difficulty in attempting to employ the sales comparison approach to the market value appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income-producing property. Here, common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by mineral appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the income approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much-too-common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value mineral appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables. The examples are used as the basis for a discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while warning against the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.
