The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

This paper describes development of a cost report that is descriptive, logically oriented, and concise. Since the costs involved relate to mining, this reporting technique could help bridge any possible communications gap between "mining men" and computer personnel, at the same time giving the computer-oriented mining individual information to assist him in his job performance. As computers become entrenched in the mining world, meaningful report assimilation becomes a major task. No one should be more capable of defining required results than the man requesting a report. If he is able to clearly state his needs and has researched his problem, it will be reflected in the computer output. During 1970, The Anaconda Company's Berkeley Pit Operation, at Butte, Montana, received many different computer-generated equipment cost reports. Up to thirty-six different components for each type (class) of pit equipment contributed cost data to the Berkeley Pit cost system files for both operating and repairs during current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods. This reporting approach was taken to facilitate analyzing this voluminous data. SUMMARY A Major Component Cost Analysis (Exhibits 6-A thru 6-C) developed by arranging the top ten operating and repair percentages (component cost divided by total cost) in descending order, and then accumulating these percentages to a possible one-hundred percent. While tabulating the operating and repair cost percentages by equipment unit number in the current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods, a frequency chart is constructed for each equipment

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

Albert Einstein once said, ?the important thing is not to stop questioning.? In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

Powered haulage continues to be a large safety concern for the mining industry, accounting for approximately 50%of the mining fatal accidents every year. Among these fatal accidents, haul-truck-related accidents are the most common, with 6 of 28 and 6 of 27 fatal accidents occurring in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur and what can be done to prevent them, researchers reviewed the 91 haul-truck-related fatal accidents that occurred in the USA from 2005 to 2018 and performed bow-tie analyses using the final reports published by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The analyses explore the context of the accidents with a focus on the initiating event, event outcome, hazards present, and possible preventative and mitigative controls. Overall, the vast majority of the accidents resulted in a haul truck colliding with the environment, and the majority of these events were initiated by loss of situational awareness or loss of control. The majority of the hazards were related to design and organizational controls. The results of this study suggest a need to investigate operator decision-making and organizational controls and to focus on improving design and operation controls such as mine design and operational procedures.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. The Earth?s population is approaching 6.6 billion people. More than half live in urban areas. And, as those figures continue to grow, the need to make wise use of the world?s natural resources as well as its living space will also grow. Thus, the concept of sustainable development ? meeting the needs of the current generation while preserving resources for future generations. The use of underground space is only one part of the sustainable development concept. But it is an important one. Tunnels and underground space are environmentally friendly and contribute significantly to sustainable development. But it takes years to plan and build tunnels and other underground infrastructure. And the demand for infrastructure in the world?s mega cities has grown significantly. In December, about 100 people representing several developed and developing nations spent a day at the United Nations (UN) in New York City discussing the future of underground space development throughout the world. The meeting was put on by the UN?s Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The conference was titled ?The Use of Underground Space as an Unexpected Solution for Promoting Sustainable Development.? Its aim was to promote practical solutions to the use of underground space and tunnels as feasible alternatives to promote sustainable development throughout the world. A panel of speakers from government, academia, the UN and the ITA stressed that development is not sustainable without infrastructure. And, as the world?s population grows, there is now an urgent requirement to efficiently plan for the use of underground space to preserve it for the future benefit of mankind. The benefits of the use of underground space are many, they said. Among them: ? Tunnels channel clean water in and waste water out. This promotes health and sustainability worldwide, particularly in developing countries. ? The use of tunnels and underground space helps conserve energy and increases its efficient use ? the use of tunnels cuts commuting time and so saves energy. ? Tunnels, microtunnels and other underground structures promote the more efficient use of space in large cities ? the bulk storage of water, fuel and other goods. ? Underground structures are subject to less stress than surface structures, making them safe havens for natural and man-made hazards, including earthquakes. And, because underground structures are more durable, lifecycle costs are less than surface structures. ? Underground structures promote the multiple use of available land. Land owner-ship at several layers increases land use and provides more usable space. Han Admiraal is director of the Center for Underground Construction in the Netherlands. He said that urban planners need a new vision concerning the use of underground space. Going underground protects historical and archaeological surface facilities, he said. Underground space use can also protect populations located in adverse climates. And sensitive environmental areas on the surface can also be protected from development. In addition to the transportation of people, freight and water, underground development can also store water, as well as provide storage for waste, hazardous materials, carbon dioxide and geothermal energy. The upshot of this new awareness and vision for under-ground space is that its use should be considered before surface development, Admiraal said. And planners and developers are placing more emphasis on underground space development as part of their overall development plans for urban areas. That was not always the case, he said. In the past, underground space was not considered until after the surface space had run out, he said.

To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding-type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high, causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concern for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents an impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development and laboratory testing of a waterproof coated impact-resistant lagging panel and (3) impactresistant steel set design based on the law of conservation of energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.

The present work aims to investigate the link between the oxidation and reduction of a weathered ilmenite concentrate in terms of phase transitions, microstructural changes, and element distribution. An ilmenite concentrate sample was pelletized and fired at 1000 °C in air, and as a result, the pellets were oxidized. The oxidized pellets were reduced by hydrogen gas at 1000 °C, which yielded almost complete metallization of the iron content of the pellets. The ore and the pellets were characterized in each step by XRD and SEM techniques, and distribution of elements and phases were investigated. Ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile were the main phases detected in the ilmenite concentrate sample, and depending on the weathering degree of the particles, different fractions of the phases were identified in their microstructure. It was found that irregular rutile grains dispersed in a pseudobrookite matrix is the morphology of the oxidized ilmenite phase. However, increasing microcracks and porosities were the only microstructural changes in the pseudorutile phase after oxidation in air. Studying the specific types of the ore particles and their oxidized and reduced forms indicated that the phase distribution in the ilmenite ore particles dictates the phase distribution in the oxidized and reduced ones. Results show that the morphology of the reduced particles includes a titanium (III) oxide matrix in which reduced iron globules are dispersed.

"This study sought to identify changes in continuous mining machine (CMM) operators’ risk perception and risk behaviors as a result of adding a proximity detection system (PDS) into their environment. To accomplish this research task, 9 CMM operators from 5 locations were interviewed. Interviews were thematically analyzed for constructs including patterns in risk perception and behavior before and after PDS integration and the process of adapting to the PDS. Operators discussed standing in the red zone less than they did before using the PDS; however, they also discussed other risky decisions they made while learning how to operate their CMM with the PDS technology such as “cheating” the technology and working faster to meet production goals. The process of relearning job tasks with technology and unintended behaviors as a result of that relearning process need to be taken into account when introducing new technology into the mine environment. The study results show an in-depth view of mine workers’ perspectives and how their job tasks and environment could be or are affected when learning how to use new technology that are relevant to companies and mine operators when introducing new technology into the mine environment. INTRODUCTION Established “red zones” can help prevent striking and pinning incidents by providing guidance to continuous mining machine (CMM) operators about where they should stand and not stand while operating a CMM. Although red zones influence operator placement positions, these guidelines are not foolproof safety mechanisms. Depending on the job task and circumstances of the mine environment, a CMM operator may unintentionally or intentionally stand in a red zone. For example, CMM operators may work in close proximity to their CMM for better visual attention cues and the ability to work at a higher rate of production [1-3]. To further enhance protection and prevent collisions between vehicles and mine workers, a proximity detection system (PDS) was developed for the industry. The PDS determines an individual’s position relative to a specific piece of machinery, issues visual and/or audible warnings to the mine worker to change positions, and, if necessary, disables machine motion [4]. The introduction of new technology within other sectors has been identified as a factor that influences work decisions. Specifically, previous research demonstrates that when technology debuts there can be an initial intrinsic risk perceived among users about how the technology will interact with their current environment and behaviors; however, these ambiguities, including the possible risks and benefits, are seldom studied [5]. Some research suggests that the constant presence of technology can disrupt situation awareness and decision-making capabilities by increasing worker responsibilities and worker cognitive demands [6-8]. Further, if workers’ perceived risks both with and without technology are misjudged, unsafe decisions that result in human error and injury may be more likely [9-11]. Although these statements are provided within a broad contextual framework, they support the need to study how technology is perceived among end users in their own environment. Because research about technological impact on worker behaviors has suggested both positive and negative consequences of technology, this issue is worth addressing in the mining industry. Specifically, research has not determined whether CMM operators view their placement choices in the red zone as safe or risky and what effect PDS technology has, if any, on risk perception and subsequent risk behavior."

Barrick Gold Corporation in conjunction with SNC Lavalin Engineers and Constructors have developed basic engineering design for counter current decantation thickener (CCD) plants capable of processing 44 000 t/d. To achieve this throughput in a single train, the largest high-rate thickeners installed to date have been utilized in concert with large process slurry and solution transport systems. Process reliability and plant operability and maintainability have been carefully considered in order to develop a practical, yet cost effective design. The design also incorporates the challenges associated with installation of large equipment and structures in a remote location, with a climatically hostile environment, situated in a high seismic activity zone.

Roadheaders are commonly used in coal mines for roadway excavations. The prediction of roadheader performance is necessary for the planning of roadway projects and the estimation of costs. Recently, a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system has been introduced for roadheaders used in coal mines. In this study, the validity of the RMCC system was investigated for different types of roadheaders and different coal mines. Four different coal mines were visited, and the performance measurements of different axial and transverse roadheaders were carried out during the excavation of roadways. Uniaxial compressive strength, volumetric joint count, the strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, the Cerchar abrasivity index, and water ingress were determined in field and laboratory studies to calculate the RMCC index. The analysis of the data demonstrated that the correlation coefficients between the net cutting rates and the RMCC indices were higher than 0.94, suggesting that the RMCC system was valid. It was concluded that the RMCC system could be reliably used for the evaluation of roadheader performance in coal mines.

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

Over the last 25 years, through adversity and a growing level of risk mitigation, Australian Longwall mines have been using higher and higher capacity cable bolts for secondary support. A recent survey revealed 85% of Australian longwall cable bolts are a 70 tonne capacity pre-tensioned hollow post groutable system. Mines avoiding pumping cementitious grouts are sometimes using pre-tensioned resin encapsulated solid cable bolts of over 90 tonne capacity. Results from various industry and University research has led to manufacturer's fine tuning the construction of their cable bolts. A review of this research explains how smooth wire construction is now dominant. Aggressive shear has also led to some mines using 8 tonnes pre-tension instead of the previous common 20 tonnes pre-tension. Lower pre-tension acceptance is now leading to a greater use of threaded cable bolt end fittings, these are tensioned to 8 tonne using the drill motor torque. A recent development is the TEX cable bolt, a slim line threaded end fitting that fits with the drill hole like a standard rock bolt. This cable is being installed at the coal face as primary support off bolter-miners. The laboratory and in-situ testing of the TEX cable is presented. In a bid to improve gateroad development rates and ground support in the last several years, a 100 tonne tensile capacity Goliath cable system was developed. The latest development in resin anchored solid cables is a 110 tonne capacity cable bolt, with laboratory and in-situ testing results presented.

The two Agrico Chemical Company self unloading Phosphate Rock barges put into service in 1976 operate at over their design carrying capacity. Each barge now carries 26,000 short ton instead of the planned 25,000 short ton at 32 foot of draft. They are in service between Agrico's Tampa, Florida Terminal and the Donaldsonville, Louisiana Fertilizer Complex, moving a total of 2,500,000 short tons each year. This was the first use of the Parascrew design for a marine application. The barges, with their 3,000 STPH unloading and matching loading rate is the vital link in this total transportation and handling system. Rock is moved from the Pierce, Florida Mines through the Tampa Big Bend Terminal, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Mississippi to the Agrico Faustina Phosphoric Acid Plant 30 miles below Bacon Rouge, Louisiana. The trip from the terminal to the plant is 600 miles and the turnaround time is just about six days. Seven years operating experience has proved that the system works. Fittingly, the two barges are named the "Faustina" and the "Pierce". They have a beam of 85-feet and are 495 feet long. folded depth is 43 feet, with a ballasted light draft of 19 feet and a typical loaded draft of 32 feet. There are four separated holds with the machinery room located forward of 101 hold. Each hold is 51 feet wide at the coamings with an 18 foot straight section on the side, and a 24 foot long, 600 slope sheet for a 23 foot clear reclaim width at the bottom. The Parascrew in each of the holds is 37 feet long between the bearings and is supported on a 14 inch diameter hollow shaft. The screw pitch varies and the diameter of the flights step up from l'-9" diameter to 2'-6" diameter on the discharge end. By sloping the centerline, a minimum four inch bottom clearance is maintained across the hold. Some bending of the tube does take place.

Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.
