This paper describes the various factors that contribute to the maximum design pressures acting on box fronts and how these factors influence the mass and economy of box front steelwork. The influence of material density, rock size and moisture content on the incidence of hang ups and mud rushes in the rock pass is also highlighted. The loads acting on any box front are a function of several different parameters. These include natural, operational and excavational parameters. A case study analysis was carried out using UG2 ore and a typical box front structure to demonstrate the relationship between the mass of the box front and the material pressures resulting from variations in the above parameters. Based on the results of this case study, the required design mass of a side mounted box front for a rock pass containing platinumUG2 increases in (close to) linear proportion to % overbreak and is also linearly proportional to the pressure on the face of the box front beyond saturated conditions. The mass of the box front structure also doubles with a 100%increase in over-break which emphasises that a box hole excavation that is as neat as possible will yield a lighter and more econimical box front structure.

Nkomati Nickel JV exploits the ores of the Uitkomst Complex near Machadodorp in the Waterval Boven district in South Africa?s Mpumalanga Province. Due to factors such as the remote location, stellar growth in production, opencast mining methods, and ore characteristics, a number of innovative processing options were selected. Nkomati has undertaken numerous initiatives over the last few years to improve plant running times, metallurgical performance, and operational profitability. Great emphasis has been placed on effectiveness of management control systems. A number of initiatives such as short interval control and time?in-state metrics have been implemented. A focus on improvement on availability and asset utilization of key items of equipment has been particularly effective. While the ores are remarkably similar to the Merensky and UG2 reefs, the relatively high base metal sulphide content and mineralogical characteristics make metallurgical treatment somewhat different to the ores of the Bushveld Complex. The low head grades and flotation kinetics distinguish Nkomati from other base metal operations. Numerous milling and flotation optimization initiatives have resulted in dramatic improvements in throughput, recoveries, and concentrate grades. This paper discusses the metallurgical, operational, and management challenges and the outcomes obtained.

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator?s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however, the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialized area of mechanized mining.

DC arc furnaces are widely used for steel scrap melting, and are increasingly being used for smelting applications as well. The electrical resistivity of slags varies widely, from highly conductive slags in ilmenite smelting, to highly resistive slags in applications such as cobalt recovery from non-ferrous slags, and nickel laterite smelting. Models have been developed to predict the electrical behaviour of the DC open plasma arc and the molten slag bath. These models allow the voltage and current ranges of furnace power supplies to be specified.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d'après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l'aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

In this study, the general case of semi-batch precipitation of nickel hydroxide, Ni(OH)2, is modelled. In practical terms, this precipitation may occur at high ionic strengths, and therefore the model for solution chemistry requires a thermodynamic model that is applicable for these non-ideal systems. The activity coefficient model used is the ELEC-NRTL. The simulation of the solution chemistry is performed using AspenPlusTM, which is a steady-state process simulation program. This allows for rigorous evaluation of the solution speciation, and hence the degree of supersaturation which dictates the precipitation kinetics. The solution chemistry provides the basis for predicting the formation of solids. The model consists of a solution chemistry part and a solids formation part. The inputs to the model include the initial concentrations of the streams entering the reactor, kinetic parameters for the precipitation processes, and a particle size distribution obtained from experiments. The solids formation part of the model employs the method of moments for the evaluation of the population balance. The population balance accounts for total particle number, and the formation and increase in size of particles across the entire particle size range. This balance requires kinetic parameters for the processes of nucleation, growth and agglomeration. Using optimization routines inherent in AspenPlusTM, parameters for the rate of nucleation, growth and agglomeration may be extracted from experimental particle size distributions. These are then used in the model to extrapolate to other conditions. Once an understanding of the kinetics of the precipitation processes is gained, the model provides a predictive tool for optimization of these kinetics, in order to increase the overall particle size and therefore improve solid-liquid separation. The work is deemed to be significant as it sheds some light on solids formation processes involved in precipitation?including nucleation, growth and aggregation?and develops a predictive modelling tool applicable to solutions of high ionic strength. We argue that this dewatering of suspensions is affected significantly by particle size distribution and surface properties of the solids formed by precipitation. This modelling tool should facilitate the design of solids formation processes where downstream dewatering is enhanced.

The need to recruit locally produced engineers by the South African Mining Industry led to the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand developing a number of academic bridging initiatives for educationally disadvantaged students. The graduation rate achieved during the initial five years of operation by the most successful of these programmes has been on a par with that of al other students but the performance of subsequent intakes has declined to such an extent that the continuance of this scheme could now be at risk. One reason for this reduction in throughput is that many of the applicants for the increasing number of mining bursaries have been more interested in the bursary than the profession and have either failed or dropped out due to a lack of application and motivation. This will have serious consequences for both Wits and the Industry if it continues and some method of identifying unsuitable or suspect applicants needs to be introduced as a mater of urgency. It is recommended that an introductory course be set up at a working mine that would be run under the auspices of Wits, as a joint venture with industry, and include a level of academic input that would provide both bridging needs and certain first year credits. The final form of this course will require extensive consultation with al parties but needs to be completed before the end of 1996. It is further recommended that the advertising and promotion of mining careers be expanded and much improved.

The choice of the appropriate delivery process for a project is often not adequately thought about. The industry needs to be prepared to break its preconceived mind-sets on delivery procedures. Industry should also be prepared, on a project by project basis, to commit to a critical review as to how the assessment and then selection of the best procurement method can best optimize the project outcome for both client and contractor. Conventional standards and biased reliances and experienced based preferences should be challenged. To achieve this requires a paradigm shift in attitude to both the process of tendering and the evaluation of tenders. Tender and contracting practices are dynamic and have moved away from solely cost based assessments. Tendering contracts arise imposing changed duties upon owners. Traditional contract delivery models have shifted, reflected in part by the trend towards relationship contracting. The categories of contract options are not closed. Many are but hybrids of other time-tested models. This paper considers options available for any brownfield or greenfield project. The principles outlined are translatable to supply, upgrade, operation and maintenance arrangements.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.

ABSTRACT : An experimental programme for damage assessment was performed in the vicinity of the main shaft of Andra’s Underground Research Laboratory, currently under construction in the East of France, when the shaft is crossing the Kimmeridgian marls between 80 and 100 m depth. The mechanical behaviour was analysed by mean of convergence and displacement measurements. The disturbance into the wall was assessed using numerous methods such as measurement of sonic velocities, permeability measurement and VSP measurement in radial boreholes. The intensity of the damaged zone is low, and its extension does not exceed 0.5 time the radius of the shaft. It does not seem to depend on blasting patterns. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Ein Forschungs- und Versuchsprogramm wurde aufgestellt, um die beschädigte Zone im Bereich der Kimmeridgemergel zwischen 80 und 100 Meter Tiefe beim Zugangsschacht des im Bau befindlichen Andralabors im Osten Frankreichs zu berechnen. Das mechanische Verhalten der Formationen wird auf der Grundlage von Konvergenz- und Verschiebungsmessungen ermittelt. Verschiedene Messmethoden, wie z.B. mikroseismische Geschwindigkeite Messungen, Permeabilitäs- und Beschleunigungsbestimmungen in strahlenförmigen Bohranordnungen, erlaubten die Ermittlung des Beschädigungscharakters der Schachtwand. Die Intensität der beschädigten Zone ist niedrig, ihre Ausdehnung übersteigt nicht die Hälfte des Radius des Zugangsstollens und scheint unabhängig vom Schema der Sprengstoffanordnungen zu sein. RESUME : Un programme expérimental visant à évaluer la zone endommagée autour du puits d’accès du Laboratoire de Recherche Souterrain de l’Andra actuellement en construction dans l’Est de la France a été mis en œuvre lors de la traversée des marnes du Kimméridgien entre 80 et 100 m de profondeur. Le comportement mécanique des formations est évalué à partir de mesures de convergence et de déplacements. La mise en œuvre de nombreuses méthodes, telles que des mesures microsismiques, des mesures de perméabilité et d’accélérométrie en forages radiaux, a permis de caractériser l’endommagement en paroi du puits. L’intensité de la zone endommagée est faible et son extension ne dépasse pas 0,5 fois le rayon du puits. L’endommagement semble indépendant des schémas de tirs testés.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

After the closure of collieries, they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between them and different hydraulic pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The collieries in the Witbank Coalfield have geometries such that there are several areas where this intermine flow is possible. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon is required. The challenges in determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention has focused on identification of areas where these flows can take place. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties in exact geometric configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic properties of thecoal and overlying lithilogical layers. During this study, use has been made of numerical flow modelling and several analytic solutions to test the applicability of the flow models as well as to predict groundwater flow directions, filling times of voids and flow volumes. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a downscaling approach starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines, and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

The mechanical behaviour of schistose sedimentary rocks such as slate show a great amount of anisotropy. Hence, the schistocity plane is essential when investigating the mechanical behaviour of such rocks. The presence of such rocks in civil projects causes non-symmetric deformation and their behaviour is unpredictable. In this research, the anisotropic strength behaviour of slates is studied. Uniaxial and triaxial tests were conducted on specimens having orientation angles (ß) of 0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees. The triaxial tests were done at confining pressures of 3, 5 and 10 MPa. The effect of anisotropy on uniaxial and triaxial strength, cohesion, angle of internal friction and Hoek and Brown's m and s constants were investigated. The results indicate that the strength of slates in uniaxial and triaxial compression exhibit a U-shaped anisotropic behaviour. In-order to evaluate the most suitable criterion for predicting the anisotropic strength of rocks in uniaxial and triaxial compression, an investigation was carried out on various criteria. In uniaxial compression, the Liao and Huong and Ramamurthy criteria had good agreements with the test results. In triaxial compression the Hoek and Brown and Mc Lamore criteria had better agreements with the test results. It should be noted that in-order to utilize these criteria, a large number of tests must be carried out. However, as the Ramamurthy criterion needs fewer test results, it can be the most suitable for investigating the behaviour of anisotropic rocks in triaxial compression. Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. ?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.
