ORMROD (Visitor) A correlation between the potential of a U02 electrode and the rate of recovery of uranium has been proved in laboratory and plant trials. When the recovery rates change because of variation in the concentrations of Fe(III), Fe(II), SO4 'and H+, a positive correlation is observed. However, an 2- increase in the concentration of phosphate in solution produces an increase in the U02 electrode potential but a decrease in the rate of leaching of U02. The correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the rate of leaching of U02 is then negative. It is concluded that, as a control device, the electrode cannot compete with the platinum electrode for use on certain plants. Nevertheless, the U02 electrode will act as a useful warning device if the total concentration of iron in solution decreases to below a level concomitant with the economic recovery of uranium. Furthermore, because of the positive correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the phosphte concentration, the electrode will also be of value in the detection of an increase in the phosphate level in solution. When it was incorporated in a suitable industrial probe, the electrode was found to be able to withstand the rigours of the leaching conditions in a large pilot-plant pachuca, and only failed after six weeks' operation.

Changes in the level of serum vitamin C in mineworkers by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Se., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), G. G. ROGERS, M.Se. (Pta) (Visitor), W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Se. (Poteh.) (Visitor), and A. VAN DER LlNDE, B.Se. (O.F.S.) (Visitor) The levels of serum vitamin C in the blood of mineworkers were determined on the first and fifth days of the normal heat-acclimatization period (i.e., before and after exposure to heat) and again after I, 2, and 4 months of underground employment. Supplementary vitamin C was administered to the men during the heat-acclimatization period. Six groups of 20 men featured in the study and, except for one of the two 4-month groups, all the values were obtained after a full shift of underground work. It was found that adequate levels of serum vitamin C were maintained during the heat-acclimatization period, and the 250 mg of vitamin C given daily to each man must therefore be regarded as sufficient. The serum vitamin C decreased significantly with time of exposure to underground conditions, showing that the vitamin C utilized during heat stress is more than that provided in the men's diet. At the end of 4 months, not a single subject had more than 0,4 mg of serum vitamin C per 100 ml, most of them having only 0,3 mg per 100 ml; 90 per cent of the men had had more than 0,4 mg per 100 ml during the acclimatization period. It is therefore recommended that the mineworkers' diets should be supplemented with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C per man per day.

Mr Chairman, members of the executive committee, the sub-committee, distinguished speakers at this opening plenary session, delegates, affiliates, ladies and gentlemen. It is with pleasure that I have been called upon today to make these opening remarks and officially welcome you al at this auspicious assembly, the Fifteenth Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Not only am I pleased to open the proceedings at this plenary session but for me to do so at Sun City in the North-West Province makes me doubly pleased. It is my wish that al delegates and their companions will enjoy the activities that are planned throughout the Congress and leave here with minds refreshed and stimulated by the technical sessions and memories enriched by being in such a unique and truly delightful setting as exists here at Sun City. The mix of delegates present reflects CMMI activities in many countries throughout the world-Australia, Japan, China, United Kingdom and South Africa among others. When it comes to mining and related activities, South Africa has a place at the top, a dominant role in platinum, gold, chromium, vanadium, dimension stone, coal and so forth, and here in the North-West Province we can proudly declare that some 25 per cent of the revenue from minerals in South Africa, namely R47 billion come from this area. Furthermore, we lead in the production of platinum group metals with 94 per cent of South Africa's total sales and thus hold first place in the world, 46 per cent of dimension stone sales, 32 per cent of chromate and 25 per cent of gold sales.

This paper summarizes the investigations carried out into a defect involving the corners of billets rolled from continuously cast blooms, which broke open during the rolling process. As it was believed that the defect must be connected with the formation of subcutaneous blowholes in the bloom, the investigations were directed towards an understanding of the roles of the three gases involved in the process. In an extensive trial programme, samples were taken from the heat at all stages of processing, as well as from all the raw materials and alloys. The main sources of nitrogen were found to be re blows, pick-up from the alloys added to the ladle (especially graphite), and open-stream casting. The major source of hydrogen was moisture in the alloys, especially high-carbon ferromanganese and silicomanganese. Further, it was established that the moisture content of the alloys is closely related to the appearance of the defect in steels with a carbon content of less than 0,20 per cent; 72 per cent of all the defects were present in this type of steel. Most of the remaining defects were found in steels with a carbon content of more than 0,60 per cent, where the nitrogen content was substantially higher than in the lower-carbon steels. It is suggested that the defect arises from the combined effect of oxygen. nitrogen, and hydrogen. Its occurrence in low- and high-carbon steels is triggered by the formation of subcutaneous blowholes when the critical oxygen level for carbon monoxide blowholes is lowered by the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen and nitrogen respectively.

Two SAIMM colloquia The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is organizing two one-day colloquia in the State Pavilion, Milner Park showgrounds, Johannesburg, to coincide with the Electra Mining Exhibition on 16th and 17th September. Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.

The evaluation of stress distributions and deformations in the vicinity of tabular mine layouts has been carried out routinely for many years using the displacement discontinuity boundary element method (DDM). In this approach, mine layouts are approximated as irregular shaped planar cracks (or slits) where the ?width? of the crack, corresponding to the excavation height, is assumed to be negligible compared to the in-plane, lateral dimensions. Early implementations of this approach have employed square element tessellations with constant displacement discontinuity component values. This is generally restrictive when considering the analysis of irregular pillar layouts or the intersection of fault planes with excavations. This paper describes a general revision of this approach in which triangular or quadrilateral element shapes are introduced in conjunction with higher order variations of the displacement discontinuity shape functions. This facilitates an accurate evaluation of detailed stress and displacement components close to excavation surfaces and allows the investigation of local damage and failure behaviour associated with particular geological structures such as weak parting bands or weak layers. A method to embed these features in an efficient and accurate multi-level solution scheme is described. This formulation can be extended to allow the analysis of shallow-depth pillar layout problems, facilitating the assessment of the interactive response and stability of shallow depth pillar layouts. A simple deformation model is introduced to facilitate the assessment of pillar failure and bursting potential in shallow mine layouts. The computational techniques described here have been implemented in a computer code called TEXAN (Tabular EXcavation ANalyser) and are illustrated by the simulation of a particular multiple reef pillar mining problem in a shallow depth platinum mine.

Interpretation of Leached Outcrops, by Roland Blanchard. Published by Nevada Bureau of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 89507, 1968, 188 pages. Price $7.50 (R5.40). This book contains a summary of the author's knowledge of leached outcrops, derived from some 30 years' experience as a geologist operating mainly in the United States of America and Australia. Part 1 of the book provides a comprehensive coverage of the various processes and substances involved in the oxidation of many minerals, under different climatic conditions, to form the final leached products. In Part 2, details are given of the appearance and composition of the oxidation products of the following minerals: pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, cha1copyrite, cha1cocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, oxidized copper minerals, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, molybdenite, chromite, hematite, magnetite, manganite, pyrolusite, calcite, siderite, fluorite, salite and supergene silica. The illustrations, the black and white photographs and the colour plates of oxidation products are of a high standard. The material is presented in a logical order and in terms which are not over-technical; hence it is useful to persons other than trained geologists. Despite the advances in geophysical and geochemical prospecting, the location and interpretation of gossans remains an important method of discovering ore bodies, particularly so since the correct interpretation of a leached material can prevent the fruitless and expensive prospecting of an underlying body of uneconomic concentration. Therefore it is considered that this volume will be a valuable addition to the libraries of universities, exploration companies and geologists. It is of interest to note that the author, who died in 1966, presented a paper, under the same title as this book, to the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa in 1939. For this work he was awarded the Society's Gold Medal. W.T.S.

This volume, which was advertised in the December, 1968, issue of the Journal at a pre-publication price of £4, is edited by W. Ryan of Warren Spring Laboratory and published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London. It is an up-to-date review of the operations of some 50 or so companies whose activities embrace the extraction and refinement of metals in the United Kingdom. Thirty-four metals are discussed, ranging from aluminium to zirconium and also there are chapters on ferro-alloys, non-ferrous alloys, high purity metals and metalloids, the platinum group metals and the rare earths. The sources of the various metals are given, followed generally by a brief description of the primary recovery process. Thereafter the operations of specific companies that deal in a particular metal are described in some detail. Certain metals such as barium, bismuth, gallium, thallium and zirconium are perforce covered very briefly as their commercial application is limited but in other cases, especially aluminium, copper lead and zinc, fairly detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided. This publication should be of considerable value to students as it presents modern procedures with regard to the refining and uses of the particular metals under review. This information may not be available from text books which in any case tend towards obsolescence. The book should also prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of practising metallurgists providing, as it does, a schedule of most of the metallurgical companies operating in the United Kingdom. The quality of the paper and binding, the clarity of printing and illustrations and the arrangement of the subject matter are excellent and are subjects for which the editor and publishers are to be commended. Premier Mine (a part of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd) which is situated 38 km to the east of Pretoria, has the largest known diamond pipe in South Africa. The mine started operations in1903. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that it is intersected by a 75 m thick gabbro sill at a depth of 400 m below surface. The current mining method used is mechanized panel retreat caving, which has been successfully used to extract ore from the different mining blocks. All caving at Premier Mine is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause the early ingress of gabbro waste. Draw control at Premier Mine is crucial as it aids in preventing conditions of isolated draw, which results in the early ingress of waste, compaction of the kimberlite and the loss of ore reserves. To assist, an underground vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system was installed to enable the effective management of the draw control function. The system has evolved graduallyin collaboration with a local developer. The data accumulated is used to decide the most effectivedraw point loading pattern in order to achieve sound draw control principles. This is achieved as each load can be related back to the draw point of origin. The VMAC data recorded also relates back to specific load-haul-dumps (LHDs), tunnels, ore passes, as well as indications of dates, times and payloads recorded. An interface exists between the VMAC and a draw control linear program. Premier Mine’s VMAC system is not a ‘dispatch’ system but rather a draw control system that caters for Premier Mine’s specific block cave requirements. Premier Mine has realized that successful automation is not dependent on technology alone but rather on the successful implementation thereof.

ABSTRACT: The modulus of deformation of rock mass is an important engineering parameter required for the design of foundation of hydraulic structure and to study the interaction of rock mass and the structure at the foundation support. Different equipment and techniques are used to arrive at the design modulus value. Since any error in the estimation of modulus values results in multiplication of its effects in the analysis, it is necessary to know about the reliability of testing equipment and procedures. In the present study modulus values obtained by different in-situ equipment at different project sites have been compared. KURZFASSUNG: Der Verformungsmodul von der Felsenmasse ist technisch ein wichtiger Parameter, den man zur Konstuktion des Grunds fuer die Hydro – Tektonik, benoetigt um auch die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der Felsenmasse und der Tektonik am Traggrund zu betrachten. Verschiedene Geraete und Methoden werden angewandt, um den Ausfuehrungsmodul -Wert zu erreichen. Es ist erforderlich, die Zuverlaessigkeit der Pruefeinrichtung sowie des Verfahrens zu kennen, da irgend ein Fehler in der Abschaetzung von Modulwerten in der Analyse zu einer Vervielfachung ihrer Einwirkung fuehrt. In der vorligenden Arbeit werden die Modulwerte gewonnen aus unterschiedlichen Einrichtungen an Ort und Stelle and verschiedenen Projekt -Stellen mit einander verglichen. SOMMAIRE: Le module de deformation d’une roche est un parametre important pour la conception et realisation des ouvrages hydrauliques ainsi que pour etudier l’interaction de la roche et de la structure d’appuis de base. De divers equipments et techniques sont employes pour determiner la valeur de ce module de conception. Puisque l’effet d’une erreur d’evaluation du module devient multiplie dans l’analyse, il est necessaire de savoir la fiabilite des equipments et des methods qu’on ulilise. Dans cette etude, on a compare les valeurs des modules obtenues en employant les equipments in-situ aux sites differents de projets.

In this paper, the effects of dynamic loads on the geometry of the failure zone occurring around underground openings, excavated in deep and massive rock masses, have been investigated. Following an elasto-plastic stress analysis of a two-dimensional underground opening under static conditions, dynamic loads have been applied. In the static and dynamic analyses, FLAC2D computer program has been utilized. Maximum ground acceleration value is selected as an input parameter. An index determining the relative size of the yield zone around the opening has been used for comparison of instabilities. In diesem Bericht wurden die Auswirkungen von dynamischen Lasten, auf die Geometrie der Bruchzone in der Umgebung von Untertagehohlräumen, die in tiefen und massiven Gebirge aufgefahren wurden, untersucht. Nach einer elasto-plastischen Spannungsanalyse eines zwei-dimensionalen Untertagehohlraumes unter statischen Beanspruchungen, wurden dynamische Lasten aufgebracht. Für die statischen und dynamischen Analysen wurde das FLAC2D Computer Programm verwendet. Die maximale Bodenbeschleunigung wurde als Eingabe Parameter gewählt. Zum Vergleichen der Unstabilitäten wurde ein Index verwendet, der die relative Grösse der Bruchzone in der Umgebung des Hohlraumes bestimmt. Dans ce papier, l’influence des chargements dynamique sur la géométrie de la zone en rupture observée autour des cavités profondes excavées dans des massifs rocheux ont été étudiées. Des chargements dynamiques ont été appliqués, dans le cas d’une modélisation bi-dimensionnelle de l’excavation d’une cavité profonde, sur la base d’une analyse élastoplastiques des contraintes en conditions statiques. Le code de calcul FLAC2D a été utilisé pour les analyses statiques et dynamiques. La valeur maximale de l’accélération du sol est choisie comme paramètre d’entrée. Un indice déterminant la taille relative de la zone sollicitée autour de la cavité a été utilisé pour comparer les différentes instabilités.

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. Initially, the ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. Subsequently, the feed source shifted primarily to freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better flotation kinetics, but with the downside of lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the rougher circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory flotation test work that were discussed at length in a previous paper1. Salient among the recommendations adopted as a result of previous work were increased circuit capacity and a modified configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidization stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and a below-specification final concentrate product. This was due primarily to higher mass pulls from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams, and which necessitated an enlarged cleaning capability. The extra cleaning capacity came on stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. IntroductionThe Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM). The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005."

"The behaviour of employees is an essential issue in the field of occupational health and safety. Safe behaviour is to a large extent determined by, apart from motivation and preventive actions, an employee’s attitude towards hazard. Thus, attention should be given to defining employees’ attitudes, and following that, to the possibility of correcting and shaping these attitudes in relation to hazard and obeying occupational health and safety regulations. The authors have focused on the analysis of employee attitudes to health and safety regulations in Polish coal mining companies, taking into consideration earlier research on the behaviour of selected employees. The paper presents the methods used to identify Z-type (passive) behaviour. Next, this behaviour is analysed to identify differences between a Z-type employee (enslaved) and other employees. To conclude, the paper presents a list of possible motivational tools that may be used to encourage occupational health and safety in Z-type employees. IntroductionThe technical state of equipment and conditions in the workplace greatly influence occupational safety. However, the deciding factor influencing the rate of accidents in the workplace is the frequency with which employees practise risky behaviour. Factors such as the social conditioning of conduct and motivation for organizing safe work conditions have been included in the notion of creating a positive culture of work safety. This notion has been approved as one of the main goals in management (Studenski, 1996).Safe behaviour is to a large extent, apart from motivation and preventive actions, determined by an employee’s attitude towards hazard. All actions undertaken in the field of occupational health and safety, including training, motivational systems, or imitation of behaviour resulting from a high culture of occupational safety in a given work environment, will not bring about the desire effects if workers have an inappropriate attitude towards occupational health and safety regulations."

"Tenke Fungurume Mining Company (TFM), located in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), began production of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide in March 2009. Copper production capacity was 115 000 t/a utilizing a semi-autogenous grinding, agitated leach, countercurrent decantation process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW). Cobalt production capacity (as cobalt hydroxide) was 8000 t/a utilizing a three-stage purification/precipitation process treating raffinate from the copper SX-EW process. Recently a phase II expansion was completed, in which copper electrowinning capacity was doubled and four stages were added to the SX plant. Corresponding enhancements were made to mining, milling, and processing to bring production to 195 kt/a copper and 15 kt/a cobalt. An additional sulphuric acid plant is currently being constructed, adding 1400 t/d sulphuric acid to bring total acid production to 2250 t/d for use in leaching at TFM.Initial copper electrowinning results were satisfactory, but cathode quality and current efficiency decreased as copper production increased. The Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) Technology Centre and TFM personnel began operation of two bench-scale copper electrowinning cells in the tankhouse to diagnose chemistry effects on the cathode and anode. The results indicated an excellent electrolyte chemistry, producing finely crystalline copper at 430 A/m2 current density with 98% current efficiency. Attention next turned to the physical factors of the electrowinning cells, including electrode insulator geometry and performance. A demonstration cell was selected in the tankhouse and was operated with varying cathode and anode insulator geometries. Operation of the demonstration cell with a three-side cathode edge strip, A-style anode insulators, and an improved cell furniture design increased current efficiency from 77% to 89% at 400 A/m2 current density. Cathode quality improved correspondingly. TFM is now operating at 92% current efficiency."

The phrase ?back to basics? is used to describe the fundamental principles and philosophies on which a successful mining operation is based. At Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), ?back-to-basics? (BTB) has been implemented as a continuous process to probe operational functions with a view to increase production without capital expenditure. It also ensures that the fundamentals of dredge mining are understood and adhered to. BTB is based on the principle that people drive organizations, necessitating an interactive implementation approach. At the RBM mine this entails a three-pronged approach, namely practical training, teamwork initiatives and the use of lean Six Sigma methodology. It is the latter on which this paper will focus. The lean Six Sigma methodology is successful in identifying, managing and documenting BTB projects, while team work initiatives are integral to successful project implementation. This paper describes two examples of how the Six Sigma methodology can be applied to a dredge mining operation. The first example focuses on the improvement of Mining Pond Echo (MPE) plant throughput by reducing the lost opportunity (non-production) due to tails downtime. The project was successful in increasing plant throughput by 4.5%. This was achieved by increasing the tails disposal system availability by running MPE as a four tails lines operation and focusing on causes of tails production downtime. Subsequently, the tails system at MPE is no longer the production bottleneck. Second, the Six Sigma methodology was successfully applied at Mining Pond Charlie (MPC) to increase the primary dredger throughput by 4.6% through focusing on the dredging technique and maintenance issues. This project highlighted the need for trend analyses to ensure an effective dredging technique, coupled with simple production documentation, which also ensures a focus on maintenance. "The performance of ground support systems under dynamic loading is typically assessed in a qualitative and subjective manner. As a result, it is difficult to develop an explicit knowledge on the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements subjected to rockbursts. This paper examines rockbursts that have occurred at Creighton, Copper Cliff, and Coleman mines since 2000, 2004, and 2006, respectively. The mines are located in the Sudbury Basin, in Ontario, Canada. The majority of pertinent information was obtained through on-site field assessments, seismic system records, and numerical elastic stress modelling. Passive monitoring is used to link the evolution of the frequency and severity of rockbursts to the evolution of mining and support practice at the three mine sites. Based on the collected data, ground support elements that enhanced the capacity of support systems to withstand dynamic loads are identified. IntroductionThe selection of appropriate mining methods, extraction sequences, rock mass de-stressing techniques, and ground support systems is of great importance in mitigating the level of rockburst-related risk. In burst-prone conditions, the design of support systems should account for the anticipated dynamic load demand and the capacity of the available support options. Furthermore, an economical design should, implicitly or explicitly, take into consideration the consequences of a rockburst and its impact on worker safety and mine productivity. Stacey (2012) has argued that we have a limited understanding of the mechanisms of rock mass behaviour in seismic conditions. This is compounded by a ‘lack of understanding of the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements under dynamic loads’ (Stacey, 2012). We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus.
