This report presents information obtained by examination and investigation of manganese deposits in northeastern Oregon during May and June 1954 and April 1957. Maps, assays, and other examination data are presented on 10 manganese deposits -9 in Baker County and 1 in Grant County. Included among these deposits are all those that have undergone substantial exploration or have a record of production. Seven of the Baker County deposits occur as characteristically small, irregular pods and lenses in argillite. The remaining Baker County prospects are [marily] narrow, vein-type occurrences in schist. The Grant County occurrence in greenstone and serpentine. All the deposits are composed of various manganese oxides, intermixed with abundant quartz and chert.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

This report presents results of the research and development work and operations performed during stage II of the gas combustion retorting research program conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation and six major oil companies at the Bureau of Mines Anvil Points Research Facilities. The experimental program, including retort modification and air-gas distributor development, effects of shale quality and particle-size distribution, and other variables on the process, is discussed. Although operating problems are not fully resolved, it appears that the gas combustion retorting process can be successfully applied to achieve oil yields in excess of 85 percent of Fischer assay at mass shale feed rates of 500 pounds per hour per square foot of cross-sectional bed area, approximately twice the rate previously demonstrated to be reasonably practicable.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on 138 waterflood projects in Wyoming. Injection was in 25 producing zones and 65 fields. Specific data presented include field location, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. The 138 projects studied will, if successful, recover about 800 million barrels of secondary oil. Almost all of the injection water is from deep water wells.

Tritiated water has been used as a tracer to follow the path of leach liquids as they flow through a copper-mine dump. Semipermeable layers, produced within the dump by compaction and "stratification" of deposized dump material, restrict the vertical movement of water. Knowledge of this restriction would aid in the optimization of the leaching process. The portion of the dump of particular interest was approximately 2,000 feet long, 800 feet wide, and 200 feet high. A total of 94 curies of tritiated water was injected into the dump at the rate of 650 gpm over a period of 39 hours. The leach liquid was sampled at natural surface outflows and through a series of wells, some drilled to the bottom of the dump and others to intermediate levels. More than 3,300 samples were analyzed, most by liquid scintillation counting, but a few hundred by gas counting. Data obtained permitted calculation of flow paths, recycle times, total fluid volume, and estimates of retention times in various portions of the dump.

This report presents the results of preliminary studies for the evaluation of some fused-salt electrolytes for refining tungsten metal, and describes the equipment used. Some impurities could be eliminated with electrolytes composed of sodium chloride, sodium iodide, or sodium tetraborate in combination with tungstic oxide or sodium tungstate. Electrolytes composed entirely of chlorides were unusable because of the volatility of tungsten chloride. Refining 96-to 98-percent tungsten to produce a commercial grade was more successful than further refining of 99.9-percent tungsten. No electrolyte tested yielded a product pure in all respects. Electrolyte temperatures of about 900° C were necessary to maintain a good dissolution rate at the anode and acceptable cell operation. Cathode current densities at the beginning of a deposition cycle were limited to approximately 1 ampere per square inch. Higher current densities resulted in a finely divided product that frequently failed to adhere to the cathode. The most conspicuous impurities in the tungsten produced were carbon, iron, and molybdenum; the former two came from the iron cell and the graphite cell liner. Electrolytes com-posed of tungstic oxide or sodium tungstate in sodium iodide, or 2Na, 0.B203, were capable of producing tungsten carbide.

"Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that woo set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606, Manganese Investigations. 1. To make a thorough survey of a coal mine in order to eliminate hazards, the competent safety engineer must be familiar with mere than one branch of engineering. It is essential that he know the properties of mine gases and the methods of detecting them, as well as hew to prevent dangerous as accumulations. It is also essential that he understand the action of overlying strata when the coal is removed, and the proper methods of protection by timbering or other suitable means of support. He must know the value of protective clothing in reducing injuries and mast be informed as to the correct handling and use of explosives to avoid premature blasts, misfires, and ether failures in blasting practice. He must understand hew to operate locomotives and cutting, loading, and various other types of machines to be able to recommend effective safeguards for protecting the men who use them in addition to being informed as 'to these and many ether activities connected with the mining of coal, he must net overlook electrical engineering if he wishes to combat the fire, shook, and ignition hazards attendant upon the use of electrical machinery and circuits in and around the mine intelligently. There are many points relating to safely in the selection, maintenance, and use of electrical circuits and equipment that are perfectly obvious to the electrical engineer but perhaps are not se evident to those not trained in this particular branch of engineering. Engineers of the U.S. Bureau of Mines who have made a special laboratory study of electricity as related to safety in minus haw e also made inspections of electrical installations at a large number of bituminous mines. These inspections have revealed practices and conditions that not only do not contribute to safety but that add nothing to efficiency and economy in the operation of the mine.

The most important single operation in mining is the ventilation of underground areas in a manner conducive to the health and safety of employees. Adequate volumes of pure air must be supplied at the working faces, along the haulageways, and wherever men work, so as to dilute and carry away the methane liberated from the coal and adjoining strata, noxious gases evolved by the use of explosives, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by men and formed by oxidation of carbonaceous material, as well as any other gases, and also dusts which may be found in mine workings. A sufficient quantity of air must also sweep abandoned or worked-out areas of the mine to prevent the accumulation of gases, where sealing methods are not utilized to isolate old workings. Air, in a quantity adequate to meet the needs of the particular mine to which it is applied, is necessary, and supplying it can be made very expensive through failure to observe good practices in its direction and apportionment." Leaky stoppings, doors, and overcasts rob the working faces of air and add to the ventilating cost by burdening the fans with fugitive air,

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. This paper describing the mining practices at the Ground Hog Unit of the Asarco Mining Co., a subsidiary of the American Smelting and Refining Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United Stated. The Ground Hog mine is at Vanadium in the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., about 1.0 miles east of Silver City and 2 ½ miles southwest of Santa Rita. A branch line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway connects Vanadium with Deming, about 45 miles southeast.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. "INTRODUCTION During the development work on sponge iron by the Bureau of lines it was desired to produce a product of maximum density for the furnace. One means of doing this would be to make a plastic mixture of the ground ore and extrude as pellets or large slugs or brick shapes.If a pelletizing Process is employed, the pellets must be strong enough to resist breaking when rolled and tumbled in going through the rotary kiln. If a brick-making process is employed, the brick must be strong enough to withstand handling and considerable pressure when stacked in the kilns.The study had two objectives: first, to find a binder of sufficient strength throughout the early stages of curing and heat treating and, second, to determine the degree of curing and heat treatment necessary to prevent disintegration under normal working conditions.Although the investigation had as its primary objective the processing of sponge iron, the data should interest other industries in which non plastic or poor-bonding slimes are a problem."

In the normal operation of mines, the aggregate effect of many seemingly minor op rations may be very important as respects economy and safety. Anion: these operations is the method employed in coupling and uncoupling mine cars. For economic reasons the equipment in mines has not been protected as well as railroad equipment. It is pertinent that haulage accidents rank second in severity among mine accidents, and that manual coupling of cars has been one of the most frequent causes of such accidents. One study4/ revealed that coupling was responsible for about 20 percent of haulage accidents underground. A review of early conditions on steam railroads, which were responsible for the introduction of safer methods of coupling cars, indicates how conditions in might be improved. THE STORY OF RAILROAD COUPLING As any considerable improvement in mine-car coupling probably will follow lines somewhat similar to those that brought order out of chaos for the railroads, it seems appropriate to review briefly the steps taken to improve railroad coupling from the days of link and pin couplings of various types to the adoption of the standard ?M.C.E? automatic coupler.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.
