Shock tubes, either gas or explosively driven, are often used for physical modeling of free field explosions or arena testing. The use of shock tubes often requires less setup time of subjects and smaller driving forces to create pressure versus time waveforms similar to that of arena testing. However, the effects of the shock tube cross sectional geometry on waveform properties is uncertain while free field explosion wave propagation and estimation is well studied.

Torpedoing Wells. – On the completion of the drilling, or when the production is found to decrease, it is usual to “torpedo” the well to increase the flow. This process was patented in 1862 by Colonel Roberts, who believed, with many others, that the oil was contained in crevices in the rock, which might not have been tapped by the bore-hole. He therefore proposed the use of nitroglycerine, gunpowder, or other explosive, to break up the rock at the bottom of the well, so that these rich “pockets” might be brought into communication with the well.

This paper deals with a new variation of the cast blasting technique, where-in the object is to cast the economic deposit out front under the overburden, while avoiding dilution from the floor material. To date, the technique has been successfully applied at two cement quarries in Iowa and at a granite quarry in Minnesota.

Hydrocarbon fuel oils are one of the main components of ammonium nitrate-based explosives, including ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil) and emulsions. While a wide variety of fuels can, and have, been used in the manufacture of ANFO and emulsion products, No. 2 diesel, particularly dyed, off-road diesel, is widely used due to its ready availability and use in fueling mining equipment. However, a number of alternatives to standard diesel have been introduced over recent years, namely, biofuels, ‘high-performance’ diesels, and renewable diesels. The pressure to adopt these alternative fuels come from a variety of sources, such as initiatives to reduce carbon footprints, increased lifetime of equipment, and cost-advantages from tax credits. While these factors may provide a very real benefit to the mine site, a consideration that is often missed is how the use of these fuels can impact the formulation and characteristics of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Herein will be presented a discussion of these alternative fuels from a chemical perspective as well as the results of several studies focused on how the inclusion of various alternative diesels influences the production and performance of ammonium nitrate explosives. ANFO and emulsion were manufactured using representative fuel sources and studying in terms of the manufacturing parameters, shelf-life, interaction with other chemicals using in mining explosives. Detonation data was then collected for these products and compared to the behavior of products made with standard diesel fuels.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Production blasting has significant impact on the efficiency and productivity of SLC output, affecting material fragmentation, flow and recovery. Misfires could occur during blasting in SLC, which results in the loss of explosives and poor fragmentation. Usually, the blastholes are top-initiated with redundant lower primers set at + 25 ms as a precaution. If the top primers fail, the lower primers may initiate the explosive, which will induce out-of-sequence delays that can influence fragmentation and gravity flow. This work investigated the impact of misfires and out-ofsequence delays on fragmentation and gravity flow through numerical simulations using a coupled finite element and discrete element method. Different scenarios of misfires and out-of-sequence delays were studied, and the fragment size distribution was obtained to evaluate the blasting performance. The material flow behaviour was investigated to assess the gravity flow process. The results indicated that misfires significantly affect the fragmentation and the gravity flow process while the effects of out-of-sequence delays are not so significant for the investigated cases

During December 2007, Lake Cowal Gold Mine located in New South Wales, Australia experienced a significant pit wall failure. The wall failure resulted in the deposition of a large quantity of saprolite consisting largely of clays and lake bed sediments to the bottom of the Phase 1 open pit mine. This wall failure ultimately buried two loaded blast patterns.

A surface copper mine in the Western United States faced challenges in recovering rock and ore from final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall conditions. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The mine engineering team and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. In this paper we present how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

The test was an extension of earlier pre-split testing conducted by Virgil Stachura of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in conjunction with Navajo Mine and WESCO Inc. which tested low-density product in 10.625 diameter holes.

The underwater explosions has been used as a test method for the determination energy content of explosives. The test method is suitable for all kind of explosives; homogeneous, heterogeneous, wa-ter-resistant, no-water resistant, cap sensitive, booster sensitive, explosives with hard confinement, explosives without confinement etc. It is also the only test method by which shock, gas heave and to-tal energy values of the explosives can be measured separately. This feature makes it possible to use the test method to develop the explosives for different purposes; the military high explosives need more shock energy where as the gas heave energy is very important feature for the blasting and sea mine explosives.

Vibrograms, which last significantly longer than the actual blast (say 10 to 15 cycles or more), may be signalling an elastic response, which is not uniquely blast related. For example, geophones mounted on a part of a structure, which can elastically resonate at a frequency included in the seismogram, may not show the structure’s real reaction to the blast. This resonance usually amplifies the ground vibration. This contribution examines one particular case where blasting excited and amplified a resonant ground response, and the method used to significantly reduce or eliminate this undesirable condition.

This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Highlands Ranch was a new single family residential project located near older residential properties in the area. Blasting was necessary to remove indigenous meta-volcanic rock associated with the local geology.
