"It was discovered that the selective activity of bacteria during the extraction of raw material concentrates by means of flotation could also be achieved with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted by bacteria. EPS, which is extracted by means of centrifuging bacterial cultures, can help to significantly reduce the use of cyanides, approximately 200,000 t/a of which are used for ore dressing today.The bacterium used was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In order to identify the bandwidth of the oxidation activity, 20 bacterial strains of the strain collection of the University of Hamburg were attracted to iron(II) sulfate and pyrite under defined conditions. All strains oxidized iron(II) sulfate ten times faster than pyrite.EPS has so far been derived from four strains. In general, EPS extracts are divided into a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic fraction. The hydrophilic fraction is composed of e.g. fucose, rhamnose and glucose; fatty acids such as dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and nonadecanoic acid were found in the hydrophobic fraction.Pure mineral phases and mineral mixtures were used for the flotation tests. As opposed to current knowledge, the results were reproducible with technical flotation machines."

This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

Reverse flotation is usually used for hematite/silica or bauxite/clay flotation separation in which the silica or clay is floated and rejected. Some properties of these silicate minerals such as particle size and surface characteristics have significant effect on their flotation behaviours. Firstly, the silicate mineral particles (especially clay minerals) generally have fine particle size (< 5 microns) in their natural states or due to overgrinding and they display poor flotation kinetics, consequently having low flotation recovery. Secondly, the wettability difference on different particle basal planes influences the affinity for adsorptions of different types of chemicals such as collectors or macro-molecule. Common polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants can be used to minimize the exposure of the most hydrophilic planes of clay particles via hydrogen bonding but they can not efficiently enhance the overall particle surface floatability due to the hydrophilic properties of this type of macromolecules. A novel method to improve both flotation kinetics and surface wettability of silicate minerals has been developed and studied. That is to use a temperature-sensitive polymer, poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), as a process aid in the flotation of silicate minerals. Unlike PAM polymers, PNIPAM can induce a hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition on the particle surface when the temperature is changed to be lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST). At a lower temperature, the PNIPAM adsorbs on the particle surface via hydrogen bond similar to PAM. It induces strong hydrophobic aggregation when the temperature is increased above the CST. Thus, both floc size and mineral floatability are greatly increased. The flotation results show very good flotation performance and the addition of conventional flotation collector was no more required because the increased particle surface hydrophobicity induced by PNIPAM. Contact angle measurements explained the role of PNIPAM in manipulating particle surface hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

In this paper, full-scale mill data collected from three different circuit configurations in cement plants demonstrated the size reduction performance of dry ball mills in relation with the ball size classification achieved by the classifying liners used in the grinding compartments. Findings indicated that, breakage rates at the last 2 ~ 4 meters of the mill are not sufficient to give reasonable size reduction ratios for the production of fines. Application of only damming rings without classifying liners resulted in inverse ball size classification which lead to reduction in size reduction performance thus specific breakage rates.

Several structural characteristics change during intensive milling such as chemical composition, phase transformation, crystallite size, lattice strain, lattice parameter (s) and solid reactivity etc. The creation of defects enhances the stored energy (enthalpy) in the solids and consequently causes a decrease of activation barrier for the process and/or subsequent processes. In this paper, the effects of milling on the structural changes of hematite have been investigated using dry millings. The structural changes have been characterized using a combination analysis of BET surface area measurements and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Besides, the hydrogen reduction behaviors and kinetics of mechanically activated samples and initial sample were studied using simultaneous thermal analysis (STA). The methods of Williamson-Hall and Warren-Averbach were used for analyzing of XRD patterns to resolve and extract the microstructural characteristics of hematite phases. It was concluded that the breakage and aggregation of particles take place mainly in the starting and prolonged stages of dry grinding, respectively. The BET surface area enlarged steadily over the grinding processes whatever milling methods were utilized. The characterization of structural changes revealed that the hematite milled under various conditions did not undergo any significant reaction or phase transformation during milling processes. In addition, X-ray amorphous phase con-tent increased gradually with extending the grinding intensity. The maximum X-ray amorphous phase exceeds about 81% after 9 hours of milling in both tumbling mill and vibratory mill. The Williamson-Hall plots revealed the anisotropic character of line broadening for deformed hematite and changes in the trend of microstructural characteristics as a function of milling time. It was found that the surface weighted crystallite size decreases and lattice strain increases over the grinding periods. The minimum surface weighted crystallites were calculated about 17.3 nm, 12.2 nm for the products of tumbling and vibratory mills respectively. The maximum lattice strain,, in the grinding with tumbling and vibratory mills was calculated about 4.44×10-3 and 3.95×10-3respectively. 21/210nmLe=<> The non-isothermal kinetic analysis of the products revealed that Fe 2O3 reduced to Fe in a two-step process via Fe3O4. Intensive grinding resulted in improved resolution of overlapping reduction events. It was also established that the mechanical activation had a positive effect on the first step of reduction. The prereduction step in the activated samples initiated and completed at lower temperatures than that in non-activated samples. The activation energy of reduction decreased at the first step of reaction with increasing the grinding intensity. Intensive milling increased slightly the average activation energy of the second step of reduction due to the present of finely agglomerated particles and intensive sintering of the particles in higher temperature ranges.

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

"This article summarises the efforts to reduce the energy consumption in grinding in a magnetite ore beneficiation plant. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih ore beneficiation plant produces magnetite concentrate at 65% Fe and 8% SiO2, of which the D80 is approximately 44µm after three stages of grinding with ball mills and magnetic separation. Characterisation and laboratory scale bench tests performed on samples from the beneficiation plant indicate that the industrial flowsheet could be simplified. After the first stage of grinding and magnetic separation, a significant size fraction of the intermediate concentrate is already well liberated. Therefore, it can be directly concentrated in a second stage magnetic separation without further grinding. If a screen of 150µm size can be implemented after the first stage of grinding-magnetic separation, only the oversize of screening, representing 35% of the material, requires secondary and tertiary grinding and magnetic separation. The combined concentrate from the two fractions already meets the industrial specifications. This new route can provide the same final product, with fewer mills; it saves around 30% in energy consumption only in the grinding step without changing the main structures of the processing plant.INTRODUCTION Comminution, including crushing and grinding, is responsible for at least 40% of total energy usage in mining and mineral processing. This paper shows an example to reduce grinding cost, by changing the flow sheet design strategy in ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR).AMKR is one of the most important mining and steel complexes in Krivoy Rog basin in Ukraine, which has been studied over 100 years because of mining of iron ores. The iron ores are associated to Banded Iron Formation of the Saksagan suite, with an average iron grade of around 36 percent Fe. The total thickness of the Krivoy Rog Supergroup reaches 5-6 km, whereas that of the iron-ore Saksagan Group comprises up to 1400 m. High-grade iron ore extends to more than 2,000 m below present surface"

"A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."

"Using the flotation of a gold-containing ore from a deposit in Kazakhstan as an example, we have conducted a study designing dialkyldithiophosphate collectors, in addition to xanthates, for the flotation of hard-toenrich gold-containing ores to increase gold recovery.The increased flotational ability of the dialkyldithiophosphates was determined by their surface activity at the liquid-gas interface and their hydrophobic ability, the changing of which allowed us to control the collecting power and selective ability of the dialkyldithiophosphates. The studying of the surface activity of aqueous solutions was done using the stalagmometric method and the evaluation of the hydrophobic ability was done in percentage of the relative value of the zinc ion binding in the solution in standard conditions.Studying the influence of surface activity in our designed dialkyldithiophosphate collectors, with their close hydrophobic ability, showed that even with a small increase in surface activity in their aqueous solutions, gold recovery increased by 2-3% in laboratory conditions. Using this enabled us first to apply the dialkyldithiophosphate collector BTF-161 at a plant in Kazakhstan, and then to introduce the specially designed dialkyldithiophosphate collector BTF-163, which has been in use since. Further study of dialkyldithiophosphate activity based on this concept showed us that for the range of short-chain dialkyldithiophosphate collectors with a chain length of up to ?5, the effectiveness of ore processing became lower the higher their surface activity got, with relatively small differences in their hydrophobic ability. For long-chain dialkyldithiophosphates with a chain length of over ?5, ore processing effectiveness increased with the increase of their hydrophobic ability.Based on these studies, a new effective dialkyldithiophosphate collector, BTF-1517, was designed. Using this reagent in continuous gold recovery tests allowed us to reach an 84.21% recovery with a concentrate quality of 15.66 g/t, while using the applied collector BTF-163 in similar conditions led to the recovery of 82.87% with a concentrate quality of 15.65%. As a result, the Kazakhstan processing plant decided to conduct industrial tests with the BTF-1517 collector."

"The aim of the study was to develop and implement more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collectors. A hypothesis has been formulated on the action of dialkyldithiophosphates in the flotation of sulphide ores based on the assessment of their complexing properties and surface activity at the liquid-gas border. Dialkyldithiophosphates form weaker complexes with cations of heavy metals compared to xanthates, and are characterized by a large difference in the strength of their complexes with heavy metal cations. It provides higher selectivity of dialkyldithiophosphates in the separation of non-ferrous metal sulphides and iron sulphides from them. To make a quality assessment of the impact of surface activity of the synthesized collectors on their selectivity of action and collecting power, an assessment of the surface tension of their aqueous solutions has been performed using the stalagmometer method. It is well known that a stronger collector is characterized by a greater surface activity, in contrast to a more selective collector which is characterized by a lower surface activity. Based on studies, new dialkyldithiophosphate collectors BTF 163 and BTF 1552 are suggested for use in the flotation of sulphides to increase the recovery of copper, gold and silver. The collector BTF 163 was introduced at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan and has been undergoing industrial testing in the sulphide cycle of scheelite-skarn-sulphide ores in a factory in the far east of Russia. The collector BTF 1552, which increases the recovery of silver and gold by 3%, was approved for industrial testing in another far-eastern factory. A modification of the reagent BTF 1552, the new reagent BTF 1522, was introduced in the flotation of copper-zinc ore at a factory in Kazakhstan."

"In Chile, the evaluation to reprocess tailings for elements other than the traditional Cu, Mo, Au, and Ag, as well as projects to implement long-term monitoring of mining residue sites are key elements of the government’s roadmap laid out for the mining industry for the next two decades. Characterization routines for tailings and mining residues in general have to be adapted from traditional ore and gangue mineral and micro-chemical studies. This contribution summarizes key aspects for the regional mining industry for a basic characterization of tailings with emphasis on small- to medium-size operations with limited in-house facilities and funds to carry out extensive characterization programs. The oldest tailings in Chile were deposited almost a century ago; this fact gives importance to the recovery of past ore /gangue feed information, process circuits and changes (e.g. acid to alkaline flotation), process water provenance and recovery, meteorological registers, and routines of filling a tailings impoundment. Basic characterization should include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with laser diffraction (LD) granulometry followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and automated mineral analysis (AMA) on a reduced set of samples identified by hierarchical cluster analysis. For this detailed stage, only coarse tailings are recommended for direct a study by microscopy and automated mineralogy (P80 >100 µm); for fine tailings (P80 ~30 µm) a combination of XRD and deposit type adapted sequential extraction are more informative options. In particular, for XRD of clay phases, losses of crystallinity may result in deviation of spectra from standard reference phases due to prolonged storage. To monitor surface alteration, scanning electron microscopy can be complemented by Raman spectroscopy to detect residual reagents on mineral surfaces. For reactivity modeling BET measurements are essential."

"The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. There are a lot of big enterprises for extraction and processing of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and rock salt. Besides of it, refractory clays, limestone, mica, gypsum and talc are mined in the region. The most important type of mineral raw material is a gold. More than 8.5% of the total mining in the Russian Federation is extracted in Irkutsk region. It is about 0.7% of the world production. The environmental problems of mining and processing enterprises are a complex set of issues that requires of the searching of effective methods to be solved. One of the key environmental problems remains the reduction of waste generation and the introduction of environmentally safe waste management. After analysing different methods of environmental impact assessment it is established that the method of Life Cycle Assessment is one of the most effective methods for mining production. This method base? on the material balance of flows of raw materials, products and waste. The method of Life Cycle Assessment allows to identify the effects of environmental pollution under the influence of mining and processing at a quantitative level and to show real quantitative forecasts of the possibility of managing the flows of raw materials and waste.INTRODUCTION The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. This is a main location for the major ore companies such as “Vysochaishy”, which produces about 5.0 tons a gold per year; “Pervenets”(PJSC Polyus, the largest gold producer in Russia) - 4.5 tons/year, “Druza” - 0, 5 tons/year. Placer gold is extracted by more than 40 enterprises. In connection with this, there are many plans about a building of new and reconstruction of concentrating factories. Consequently, an increase in the volume of processing is expected. The main projects are the construction of a new mill of the Mining and processing plant GOK “Vysochaishy” with a capacity of 2.6 million tonnes of ore per year; the development of the “Uhakhan” gold-field - 23 km from the “Goltsa Vysochaishy” gold-field; the opening in the Bodaibo region the next parts of the gold-deposit ""Pervenets"". "Wet tailing dams of iron ore processing plants typically contain a significant amount of valuable minerals. In more recent years, due to the increase in iron’s prices and technological innovations, as well as the low energy consumption which required for processing of materials from tailings, dams can consider as potential valuable deposits. However, the production of iron concentrate from tailings is usually complicated where the high moisture content of the material, the high clay content and the presence of chemicals of processing such as flocculants, acids and flotation reagents, all make materials highly sticky which can be easily swollen. In the present paper, the optimization of operational parameters to recover ultrafine hematite iron ore from the wet tailings dams of the Chador-malu iron ore mine was investigated. The optimization of operational parameters, showed that with modification of the washing unit components for slurry making, the challenge of constraints from feeding the plant could be overcome. To decrease the magnetite content in the tail stream of the medium intensity magnetic separation (MIMS) and subsequently increase the efficiency, the orifice of the cleaner tail flow exit pipe was changed from 7 inches to 3 inch and yoke angle changed from 14 to 8 degrees. These changes increased mass yield by 3% and decreased the magnetite content in the final tailings to 1.2%. By recirculating the cleaner SLons of final tailings within the circuit, the solid percentage of the feed to rougher SLons decreased to around 15%, and as a result the matrices were not overloaded that easily, and mass yield increased to about 13% from 7%. All the above mentioned optimizations were achieved without significantly affecting the concentrate Fe grade."

The processing of pyrite concentrates may be accomplished with a preliminary enrichment due to withdrawal of iron sulfides from initial concentrate. The withdrawal of iron sulfides is possible with the help of magnetic separation when the magnetic iron sulfides (pyrrhotites) separate from non-magnetic fraction?the sulfides of non-ferrous metals. The conversion of non-magnetic pyrite to magnetic pyrrhotites of adjusted structure occurs because of roasting with the withdrawal a part of sulfur. The resultant pyrrhotites are strong ferromagnetic with hexagonal structure. This paper contains results of studying magnetic properties of pyrrhotites, findings of the de-composition of initial pyrite with the consequence homogenizing of product and hardening of product of decomposition in liquid nitrogen. Define the type of pyrrhotites super lattice structure, was established that at increasing of sulfur contention the magnetic properties of pyrrhotites are change ? pyrrhotite begin evince the properties of antiferromagnetic material and magnetic susceptibility of material is interruptive changing from 0 to 1.7×10-3~1.9×10-3 SI units/g system. The paper contains results of technological researching of pyrrhotizing-magnetizing roasting of pyrite concentrates in different condition: in unoxidizing, with the decreasing contention of oxygen and in autogenous regime in air atmosphere. Established that the magnetic susceptibility of products depend of pyrite degree dissociation and achieve 2×10-3~3×10-3 SI units/g system at 40%~45% desulphurization. Defined the conditions of steady regime autogenous roasting, at resultant products possess coefficient of magnetization, and this can be used magnetic separation for separating ferromagnetic pyrrhotites from gangues and non-magnetic sulfides of non-ferrous metals. This technology of pyrrhotizing roasting is recommended for effecting in industrial condition. The initial materials and products of roasting subjected to chemical, thermogravimetric, Moss-bauer spectroscopy and X-ray analysis, defined the magnetic properties.

The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. India ranks fourth in the world of iron ore production and exported 55% of the total iron ore production of 180.9 million tons in 2006-07. As per United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), the total iron ore reserves in India is 25249 mt. This consists of about 14630 mt of Hematite ore and 10619 mt of Magnetite ore. While the deposits of magnetite iron ore are limited to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, hematite ore is available in abundance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa. National Steel Policy, declared by government of India in 2005 envisages 110 million tons of steel production by 2020. This is likely to be revised upwards. Massive exploration work in iron ore is needed to convert the available resources of iron ore into reserve category. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) produced more than 24.5 million tons of iron ore during 2006-07 and plans to produce 42.0 million tons per year by the year 2010-11 to meet the requirement for a hot metal production of 26.2 million tons. While processing iron ore, the challenge faced would be the reduction of the gangue materials ? alumina and silica. It is proposed to bring down alumina and silica in the iron ore to less than 2% each from the current level of 2.5%~3.5% each. Appropriate beneficiation schemes are being developed depending upon the mineralogical characteristics of iron ores at different mines in the country. The state-of-art beneficiation technologies like Hydro-cyclone, jigging, magnetic separation etc. will be incorporated. SAIL?s corporate plan envisages blast furnace burden of 15% iron ore lumps, 15% pellets and 70% sinter by 2010. This strategy opens up the opportunity of utilization of micro fines generated in the mining and beneficiation processes for pellet making. This also directs towards all together new technological approach to the beneficiation process. SAIL is planning to set-up three pelletisation plants of 2~3 mtpa capacity. Environmental issues like reduction in slime loss and utilization of dumped low-grade iron ore are very important. R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL has carried out extensive laboratory investigations in the above area. This will help in reducing the loss of valuable iron through slimes and also increase the iron ore resource base. Laboratory investigations indicate that low grade dumped ore fines with Fe: 55.5% can be upgraded to a product with Fe: 66.2% with about 48% recovery.

Certainly, one of the core processes for the recovery of fine magnetic susceptible iron ore particles, mainly hematite iron ores, is the wet high intensity magnetic separation or WHIMS. This paper outlines a variety of recent developments and innovative process designs in the JONES® type WHIMS. It highlights the latest examples of flow sheets in terms of the diversity of combined rougher, scavenger, cleaner stages and adds to this the new more advanced JONES® type WHIMS equipment technologies like the HIGH FLOW ? HF, the QUATTRO ? Q and the SPLITT OPERATION ? SP. As a result of the increase of the capacity and magnetic intensity, the specific production cost could be decreased. The high worldwide acceptance for this continuous development testifies for the success and state of the art technology.

An extra-refractory gold ore in China belongs to Carlin Type Gold Ore which is not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon. They have been proved that its floatability is not good enough and the gold in the ore could not be leached almost if it was not pretreated. The tests for the ore were carried out in accordance with flotation-concentrate preoxidation-cyanidation(or CIL) processes in order to exploit the mine. Two new depressants were discovered in the flotation tests and improved concentrate grades from about 20g/t to 32~50g/t. The methods of the concentrate preoxidation tests were alkaline atmospheric oxidation, acidic atmospheric oxidation, acidic pressure oxidation, roasting oxidation?biooxidation. The cyanidation tests after the concentrate preoxidation have proved the gold extraction of the pressure oxidation to be the highest(92.5%) and that of roasting secondary(89.3%). After fuller techno-economic comparison, it is suggested that the flotation-pressure oxidation or roasting-CIL process should be the most optimal for treating the ore. The gold recoveries of the ore were 83% for the pressure oxidation and 80% for the roasting respectively.
