The calibration of these instruments is not difficult but must be performed carefully and with consideration for the principles of X-ray spectrometry. A discussion of successful calibration procedures as well as examples of several common mistakes is presented.IntroductionOn-stream X-ray analyzers (OSA) have become an integral part of modem mineral dressing plants. Advances in instrumentation and computer software make the analysis of process streams fast, accurate and precise. Proper instrument calibration that respects the fundamentals of X-ray spectrometry is essential if the data generated are to be reliable. Often the importance of this task is underestimated and delegated to a person with inadequate XRF training. Successful OSA calibration is the result of careful, systematic procedures.On-stream analysis is perhaps the most important tool that has been provided for the concentrator metallurgist. Combined with powerful, low cost PC's and distributed control systems, real-time elemental analysis affords today's metallurgist many opportunities to troubleshoot and optimize his process.Before OSA, operators had to be very experienced if they were to achieve good results. Even with hourly grab samples, most changes in control approach would still be based on visual cues from the circuit and gut instinct. Real-time analyses have changed that completely.The last two decades have seen a persistent drive to reduce production costs. Operations utilizing OSA have been the most successful in this endeavor. Direct benefits from the application of OSA are fairly obvious. Operators are able to make incremental changes in operational parameters (e.g. reagent addition, pH, cell level), and immediately monitor the effects. Variations in the characteristics of the mill feed can be identified and addressed immediately. More progressive operations have linked analyses to control loops to adjust process setpoints ( e.g. reagent additions), and to change them automatically according to formulas based on previous experience."

A major aim of the GOLD 2003 conference, is to promote new gold related science and technology with a view to developing new useful industrial applications for gold. Current industrial uses have provided a steady annual industrial demand for gold of around 350-400 tonnes in recent years, the bulk of which is centred on electronics applications, with dental uses constituting the second largest application. However, there is good reason to believe that whilst gold will continue to play a major role in these sectors in the future, substantial growth of demand is not anticipated. Increased industrial demand for gold is only likely to come through the emergence of new applications, probably most significantly in five broad market sectors: ? Pollution and emission control technologies, including fuel cells. ? New uses for gold in advanced electronics, electrical systems and devices. ? Chemical processing of a range of bulk and speciality chemicals, using gold based catalysts ? Advanced coatings exploiting the novel properties of gold, particularly in nanoparticulate form. ? New biomedical uses for gold including medical treatments, drugs, implants, sensors and devices. There is cause for optimism that many new applications for gold could emerge in these sectors over the next decade and that this will lead to a substantial growth in demand for gold. It is clear that many of these new opportunities will be based on a chemical approach to synthesis of useful products rather than what has historically been a materials or mechanical approach. To turn this expectation into reality requires sustained support of R & D and a determination to exploit this new science and technology into viable commercial applications.

Reliable measurement and control of the pulp-froth interface (froth depth) in the flotation columns is critical to achieve the desired metallurgical performance. Shallow froths result in a reduction of grade because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery because of the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone. The cleaner circuit at Miduk copper concentrator consists of three parallel MicrocelTM flotation columns 4 m in diameter and 12 m in height. The interface level of the flotation columns is measured by two pressure sensors located at 1.4 and 2.4 m from the cell lip (in the collection zone). In this study the performance of the level detection system at different operating conditions was evaluated. A calibrated float-ultrasonic location system was used for measuring the actual froth depth. The results indicated that the existing level control system was subject to considerable error. The absolute error was found to be 33.27 cm. This was mainly attributed to the constant set-point value assigned to the froth density (ρf=0.3 g/cm3), which actually varies with the operating conditions. The actual froth density at different conditions was calculated and its average value (ρf=0.12 g/cm3) was re-set in the control system. This resulted in substantial reduction in the level-detecting error. Recommendations for more accurate measurement of the interface level were presented. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a complicated process because of many involved variables. One of the most significant controlled variables in the flotation process is the pulp-froth interface (froth depth). The froth depth has a profound influence on the metallurgical performance parameters (i.e. grade and recovery). Shallow froths result in grade reduction because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery resulted from the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Various techniques have been developed for measuring the interface level of the flotation cells in the last few decades. These techniques can be classified as: Techniques based on hydrostatic pressure measurements (Finch & Dobby, 1990), Techniques based on the density gradient (float) (Moys & Finch, 1988), Techniques based on conductivity measurements (Uribe-Salas, 1991), Techniques based on temperature measurements (Moys & Finch, 1989).

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

"Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised.In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations:• Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie. to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits.• Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant.Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation.Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early 1980's. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill® projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product.JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. "From a technologist's point of view, there have been few fundamental 'breakthroughs' in the process of gold extraction since the turn of the century. However, the industry has made a great deal of progress in its response to the problems that have arisen: a changing demand for products, lower grade and more refractory ores, inflated labour and materials cost and the increasing control of governmental legislation. The trend in North America and South Africa to alleviate these problems has been to adopt a common policy to process larger tonnages of lowgrade ore through more efficient milling circuits. Here, however, is where the similarity ends.The purpose of this paper is to emphasise the different principles of practice employed by extraction plants in North America and South Africa to achieve the same common goal, namely gold bullion.2.0 INTRODUCTIONTwo very important aspects of extraction metallurgy for which the metallurgical engineer is responsible are plant design and plant commissioning.In North America and South Africa the importance of these aspects is due to the fact that both are related to the financial success of the project of which they form part. Good design is imperative if the capital invested in both the plant and the whole mining undertaking is to reap maximum profit. Furthermore, good design leads to a carefully planned and well executed start-up procedure resulting in bringing the plant into production on time, at designed efficiency and within budget.Due to the competent nature of the quartz pebble conglomerate and quartzite ore on the South African Witwatersrand, the characteristics of the ore type are not much different from one mine to the other. As a unique South African organisation, CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek) strives to support the mining industry by improving health, safety and productivity through developing, adapting and transferring technology. Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of potential non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructural costs. Impact Ripping and Water Pulse Rock Breaking have been tried on gold mines, whereas Activation, Mini-Disc? cutting and the Plasma Holemaker are currently being tested on platinum mines. The organisation?s many years of experience in novel rockbreaking, together with its world-wide collaborator network, has placed it in a unique position to assist the mining industry and manufacturers in developing and/or adapting existing technologies for application underground. Currently a range of technologies are being investigated, which have reached different stages of maturity. "The Phase I Mill at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan was designed to accommodate a very specific high grade uranium ore. As this high grade ore was depleted, construction was undertaken on a new mill circuit (Phase 2) to process a more conventional lower grade ore deposit.The Phase 2 Mill expanded the ore throughput to 800 tonnes per day. The new process employs crushing, grinding, leaching, counter—current decantation, solvent extraction and magnesia yellowcake precipitation and drying to produce a yellowcake concentrate.This paper discusses the process decisions required for this expansion and outlines the new mill circuit. Included is a review of the start up in August, 1984.1.,INTRODUCTION The Cluff Lake Uranium deposit is located 720 kilometers north of Saskatoon in northern Saskatchewan. A high grade deposit was discovered in 1970 with the first production taking place in 1980 after lengthy hearings. The original mill (or Phase 1 Mill) was specifically designed to accommodate this very high grade ore for a very limited plant life.Pilot plant work was carried out in 1981 on the other lower grade ores found in the immediate Cluff Lake area. Feasibility and process selection studies were then undertaken as the Phase 1 mill was nearing its end of life. These studies were completed in March 1983 when approval was given to construct the new Phase 2 mill."

Massive landslides display complex deformation processes. For instance, slope movements of the Downie Slide, monitored using borehole inclinometers, extensometers, and survey monuments, show considerable spatial and temporal inconsistencies in the displacement rates. This study assesses the influence that inferred shear surface geometry, as a key factor contributing to variable slope movements, has on resolving spatially discriminated slope deformations in three-dimensions. Borehole data defines the shear surface location at discrete points within the slide and therefore, the shear surface geometry for the extent of the slide must be largely inferred. A series of three-dimensional numerical simulations have been run to assess the effect of different interpretations of the shear surface geometry. This investigation illustrates the importance of rigorous geospatial definition of slip surface geometry and the value of three dimensional modelling.

"Improving mill grade recovery relationships is always good business. INCO’s Clarabelle Mill has just undergone a $16 million process upgrade that was designed to improve nickel recovery by 2%. The “Mill Redesign Project” was completed on time, under budget and delivered the promised improvement in recoveries.This paper describes the methodology of the Mill Redesign Team, details of the process improvements and the critical success factors that helped the team deliver on its promises.With a payback of under one year, the Mill Redesign Project will play a key role in ensuring a competitive edge as INCO embarks on its second century of operation.INTRODUCTIONIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. This is one such story. It is the story of the Mill Redesign Project at INCO’s Clarabelle Mill in Copper Cliff, Ontario.BACKGROUNDThe Clarabelle Mill was built in 1971 on the southern rim of the Sudbury basin. At that time it was one of four mills operated by INCO in the Sudbury area. During the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, the need for increased process efficiency, higher levels of sulphur rejection to tails and the concurrent development of high capacity mills and flotation cells, resulted in the consolidation of INCO’s Sudbury area milling operations into a single, expanded facility at Clarabelle."

Alumina supported gold catalyst prepared by spray reaction method (spr) provides gold particle with about 20 nm of diameter. The gold particle size is larger than conventional gold catalysts. However, the spr catalyst shows higher catalytic activity for NO-CO reaction. In the present paper, we have discussed the local structures of spr-Au/Al2O3 catalyst by using Au L3-edge XANES spectra. In order to investigate the local structures of Au-sites, multiple scattering approach to XANES analysis was applied. Calculated Au L3-edge XANES spectra for fcc-Au and Au2O3 were in good agreement with the observed spectra. XANES spectra for spr-Au/Al2O3 were characterized by 4 types of Au sites (bulk, interface, surface and peripheral). In this case, almost all gold sites (> 90 %) are bulk site. The other sites are less than 10 % of gold particle. However, the experimental and the calculated results of Au L3-edge XANES spectra for spr-Au/Al2O3 require about 30 % of gold oxide or hydroxide. Bulk of Al2O3 contains a certain number of gold nano-particles, which was incorporated in the bulk Al2O3 support. In the interface area, gold oxide forms a few layers. This result was also supported by DV-Xa electronic structure calculations. The comparison of the catalytic activities of the spray catalysts and the impregnation catalyst for the NO-CO reactions imply synergy effects between gold nano-particles and alumina support.

A cornerstone in the LKAB Green Pellet concept is to produce pellets with a small footprint in terms of energy con-sumption, CO2 emission and emission of other elements harmful to the environment, like dust, sulphur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, chloride and fluorine. The concept also encompasses our determination to make pellet products that contribute to low environmental impact and low energy consumption in our customer?s processes. The presentation will focus on the pelletizing process. It will describe both how we have attempted to decrease the generation of unwanted components in the process gas, and how we have tested or evaluated equipment for external gas cleaning. We will discuss and give examples from recent and on-going efforts and outline some of the future challenges we see, to meet our own environmental standards and also the tough demands imposed by EU and national legislation, while striving to boost production.

About 80 years ago the mining industry saw an advertisement of a machine manufacturer: ?One man ? one machine?, meaning the productivity gain by using a pneumatic rock drill instead of manual tools. Mechanization in mining had started. In the 1950's and 1960's when mechanization progressed the word could be transformed into the meaning of ?one man ? one drill rig?. During the 80's automatic functions were added to the machines. Automation started. In the 90's, the first autonomous machines were seen, transforming the advertisement from the 1920's into ?one man ? multiple machines? operated from a remote control room. Soon, the productivity gain achieved by pure automation will also be flating out meaning that the margin cost of further productivity gain will be inefficiently high. What next? In mining operations there is still a high potential of unused productivity lost by ?trivial? things like organization, logistics and operational management. Changing the focus from mechanization and automation towards optimizing the overall mining process will unleash another big potential for cost cuttings and for enhancing efficiency of production. Optimizing an overall process is a task of much higher total complexity compared to an isolated machine automation focus. And a successful process integration requires the collaboration of machine vendors, infrastructure suppliers, IT services and the mine itself. It requires a number of of important preconditions to be fulfilled: ? Integrated IT systems with seamless interfaces between all components and peripherals involved ? Real time information access in all locations ? Real time overview of all operational aspects A crucial aspect for all of these issues is a seamless communication both above and also under ground and IT interfaces which are easy and price efficient to implement. This paper highlights ways to achieve productivity gains by process optimization. It also discusses needs for industry wide activities in order to enable cost efficient performance of mine process optimization projects.

The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.

"Alkali/alumina and MgO/alumina molar ratio plots graphically portray both chemical and mineralogical changes accompanying potassic, phyllic, argillic, chloritic, and alunitic alteration of quartz monzonites and granodiorites hosting porphyry (as well as lode and greisen) ore deposits. The molar ratio plots can be used to identify different types of alteration. In most cases, the identification based on molar ratios coincides with petrographic data. In those instances where the molar ratio and petrographic identifications do not agree, the mineralogy might need to be re-examined. Hydrothermal alteration studies using trace elements could benefit from the application of complementary alkali/alumina molar ratio plots.Le diagramme des rapports molaires alkali/alumine et MgO/alumine illustre clairement les changements chimiques et minéralogiques qui accompagnent les altérations potassique, phyllique, argillique, chloritique, and alunitique des monzonites à quartz et des granodiorites encaissant les gîtes de type porphyrique, ainsi que des veines et des greisens qui leur sont associés. Les diagrammes de rapports molaires peuvent être utilisés pour identifier divers types d’altération. Là ou il y a désaccord entre les rapports molaires et les données pétro-graphiques, il peut être nécessaire de réexaminer la minéralogie. Les études de l’altération hydro-thermale accompagnées d’une étude des éléments traces auraient avantage à utiliser un diagramme des rapports molaires alkali/alumine."

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

"Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."
