The use of redox fuel cells in which oxygen is replaced by other oxidants such as ferric ions can have significant advantages [1-3]. For example, the cathodic reaction rate (e.g., exchange current density) can be increased by several orders of magnitude compared to the oxygen reduction reaction, and platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts are not required. As a result of the higher aqueous solubility of the oxidant in a redox fuel cell compared to that of oxygen the rate of mass transfer (e.g., limiting current density) is greater by several orders of magnitude. The redox fuel cell can achieve high efficiencies and has other fuel cell advantages. The main issue with the redox fuel cell cathode is the regeneration of the oxidant where low conversion efficiencies are achieved even with platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. In the work discussed here the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox fuel cell cathode is characterized over a range of electrolyte concentrations and operating conditions, and electrode materials. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are mainly used for electrochemical characterization and mechanistic determination of the cathode redox couple. Further characterization with selected compositions and materials is done in a redox fuel cell (hydrogen - Fe3+/Fe2+). The mechanism and the advantages and disadvantages of the fuel cell redox cathode are discussed with respect to other approaches and other redox couples.

Fouling of activated carbon by different organic species is a great concern in carbon in pulp and carbon in leach circuits. The rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from synthetic gold solutions which contained different amounts of potassium ethyl xanthate (PEX), potassium isobutyl xanthate (PIBX), and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were evaluated through batch adsorption tests. The results of these experiments showed that the gold sorption rate rapidly decreases by increasing the concentration of collectors including PIBX and PEX up to 20 mg/L and at higher concentrations, the kinetic rate constant (i.e., k value) gradually leveled off to 53 h-1 for PIBX, which is 46% lower than the 99 h-1 for PEX. At low concentrations of up to 15 mg/L of MIBC, a gradual decrease of the rate constant was observed, while at higher concentrations, the decrease was found to be more pronounced. The gold loading capacity and the rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from a gold cyanidation pulp in the presence of flotation reagents were also evaluated. The results of these experiments showed that the flotation reagents have no significant effect on the gold loading capacity of activated carbon at prolong adsorption period, meanwhile the rate of gold adsorption continuously decreases by increasing the concentration of flotation reagents in the leaching solution.

Bio-mining, the use of micro-organisms to recover elements of interest, is potentially useful for the economic extraction and recovery of ore metals from a variety of ore deposits, including the lowergrade uranium deposits found in the uraniferous quartz-pebble conglomerate beds of the Quirke Syncline, Elliot Lake, Ontario. The metabolism of chemolithotropic bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans depends on an ability to derive energy and reducing power from the oxidation of ferrous iron found in a varirty of iron sulphide minerals associated with base, precious metal and uraniferous ores. The characteristics of this bacterium, especially the ability to oxidize both iron and sulphur with an associated high tolerance of low acidity, allow the organism to contribute significantly to bio-mining processes. Under ideal conditions, A. ferrooxidans promotes the oxidation of ferrous iron in low sulphide ore materials, breaking the crystal structure of the ore minerals .releasing protons to the surrounding solutions, thus promoting the dissolution of uranium and rare earth elements, among others. This paper provides an overview of elemental dissolution and release of uranium, rare earth elements and investigates the acid generating potential of the final residues, from a series of environmentally controlled, biologically-mediated uranium ore extraction experiments. The findings will be used to guide in the design of larger scale bio-leaching experiments to further assess the potential for successful bio-mining operations along the Quirke Syncline.

We have developed a 76Cu-3Si-21Zn alloy "ECOBRASS®" containing no lead. When 3% Si is added to a 78Cu-22Zn alloy, kappa and gamma phases participate uniformly in the alpha matrix. When being machined, stress concentrates on these hard phases, namely kappa and gamma, and thereby lowering the required cutting force and yielding segmentalized chips without lubricant. Kappa and gamma phases transform into beta phase under high temperature, which makes it easier to extrude and/or forge the alloy. When 0.08% P and 50 ppm Zr are co-added, the grains of ECOBRASS® castings are refined significantly to become as small as several dozens of micrometers. The grain refinement by the co-addition of P and Zr improves castability, tensile strength and elongation of ECOBRASS® castings. Meanwhile, the lead leachate from an ECOBRASS® water meter, field-tested in pH 6.8 drinking water for one year, was less than 5 ppb without correction. No indication of dezincification corrosion was observed, either. ECOBRASS® is equally suitable for rods, forgings and castings, and makes it possible to produce a complete set of plumbing parts (valves, faucets, etc.) by its own. This way, not only improving recyclability, ECOBRASS® also realizes size and weight reduction due to its good corrosion resistance and high strength.

The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded at different defocusing distances on two surface conditions (as-cast or machined) using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser system at a power of 2.5 kW and a welding speed of 6.0 m/min. Two welding modes (conduction or keyhole) have been observed. The adjustment of defocusing distance can greatly influence the establishment of conduction or keyhole modes. On the machined surface conditions conduction welding is obtained at a power density of 4.0 x 105 W/cm2. In contrast, keyhole welding is reached at a threshold irradiance of 1.5 x 106 W/cm2. Neither conduction nor stable keyhole modes have been established at a range of power density from 7.7 x 105 to 1.2 x 106 W/cm2 on the machined surface conditions. On the as-cast surface conditions keyhole is obtained at a power density as low as 4.0 x 105 W/cm2 but good surface quality is obtained at a defocusing of +2 mm. The as-cast surfaces require lower power irradiance for the formation of keyholes indicating that they have higher energy absorptivity for Nd:YAG laser beams probably due to coarse surface morphology.

Mantoverde is a heap leach-SX-EW operation that was commissioned in December 1995 at a production rate of 42,130 ton of copper per year and 5.4 million ton of ore per year. Copper production has been steadily increased to reach 62,000 ton in 2005. The forecast copper production for 2006 is 60,300 ton for an ore treatment rate of 9.5 million ton. A first dump leach operation was started in 1999 at a production rate of 1,922 ton of copper. A second dump leach operation was started in early 2002 at a production rate of 2,805 ton of copper. Dump leach production will be increased over time to as much as 24,000 ton of copper. Several improvements in the heap leach process have been implemented to cope with the higher ore throughput and copper production. However, the solvent extraction plant has remained unchanged which has resulted in a lower availability of raffinate solution and, as a consequence, in longer leach cycles. Different studies have been undertaken in order to optimize the solution management system at Mantoverde, including column test work aimed to reduce the leach cycle and solvent extraction plant modifications aimed to increase the raffinate solution availability. The test work program and the economical evaluations carried out, as well as the conclusions and recommendations obtained, are discussed in this paper.

The waste slags from chemical and metallurgical plants contain approximately wt 1% water soluble Cr6+. This hexavalent chromium is very harmful to human health, and the treatment of the slags has concerned metallurgists for many years. A sintering method was developed to treat the waste slag. In this process, sinter was made from a mixture of the waste slag containing hexavalent chromium, iron concentrate and coke breezes. During sintering, hexavalent chromium was reduced to trivalent chromium. The latter is known as a non-harmful material and can be used as chromium resource for the production of ferrochromium or chromium-containing cast iron. After sintering the hexavalent chromium in the sinter could be reduced to less than 0.0008%. It was found that the waste slag with fine particles was favourable to the Cr6+ removal. An increase of carbon content in the sintering mixture could increase the rate of Cr6+ removal and the strength of the sinter produced. The rate of Cr6+ removal increased with increasing basicity of the sintering materials with basicity less than B=1.8, above which it decreased with increasing basicity. Blast furnace was found to operate smoothly when using the sinter made from the waste slag containing chromium. However the productivity of sintering machine was slightly low compared to the sintering operation using ordinary raw materials.

"With growing international interest in mineral resources in Central Africa, the importance of transparency in resource development cannot be overemphasized. Without transparency, the region cannot maximize revenues from resources. Although the importance of transparency is beginning to be recognized, many factors can hold back the gains of transparency from resulting in real economic development for the countries involved. This paper reviews current financial, economic, and development literature for Central African countries, with a focus on identifying underlying conditions and specific transactional conditions impacting the effectiveness of transparency in mining development in the region.RÉSUMÉ En raison de l’intérêt international croissant pour les ressources minérales en Afrique centrale, l’importance de la transparence dans le développement des ressources ne peut pas être surestimée. Sans transparence, la région ne peut pas maximiser les revenus tirés de ses ressources. Bien que l’importance de la transparence commence à être reconnue, plusieurs facteurs peuvent freiner les gains acquis de la transparence à produire un véritable développement économique pour les pays touchés. Le présent article analyse la littérature financière, économique et développementale contemporaine pour les pays de l’Afrique centrale, tout en ciblant l’identification des conditions sous-jacentes et les conditions spécifiques transactionnelles qui ont un impact sur l’efficacité de la transparence dans le développement minier de la région."

"When Texas Gulf Sulphur Company discovered the Kidd Creek ore body in 1964, a crash program began almost immediately for the design and construction of a modern concentrator. It was necessary to mill two distinct ore types; one containing copper and zinc, the other lead, silver and zinc minerals. The final concentrator design was to handle 9,000 tons of ore daily in three circuits. One circuit was to treat copper-zinc and another lead-zinc ore exclusively on a permanent basis. A central circuit was designed with adequate flexibility to treat either of the above ore types in accordance with planned mining schedules. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, now operates the mine and concentrator complexes for Texas Gulf. The mine is located 15 miles north of Timmins and the concentrator 15 miles to the north-east along Highway 101. The ore is hauled from the mine to the concentrator over a 17-mile railroad. Initial milling operations began in November, 1966.1 - ABSTRACTThis paper deals with bulk reagent handling at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The reagent section at Kidd Creek has operated excellently since milling began in 1966. The bulk handling techniques are satisfactory. They have contributed substantially to good working conditions, economical practices and metallurgical efficiencies. The bulk handling features described should be considered in existing and proposed concentrators."

"Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. "The idea for this talk came to me last year when I was attending the Canadian Gold Metallurgists Meeting. I talked about it to a friend of mine who is an authority on mineral dressing, particularly the theoretical end of the business. He remarked that this was an excellent technical note, why don't you write it up. This is what I have for presentation this morning. I hope in presenting this type of idea in this way it is in keeping with the tradition of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists which was to function on a not too sophisticated level and where operators could get together and trade ideas in an informal way.My basic thesis is that it should be possible to evaluate screen analyses by the application of the standard statistical probability theory. In any statistical analysis the sample is the first consideration. If we look at existing methods of size evaluation we find it is usually based on the fact that a given particle will pass one square aperature and not another. One system of standardizing how these aperatures will be set up is based on Rittenger' s work with the ratio of hole sizes proportional to the square root of 2. Keeping in mind the limitation we have accepted this as our method of 11 sizing"" in attempting to apply standard statistical methods to screen analysis."

"Incorporated in 1976, Sidbec Normines was mandated to exploit a deposit of specular hematite at Fire Lake. A combined effort of three companies, Sidbec, which holds 50. 1 % of the actions, British Steel Corporation another 41.67 % and finally Quebec Cartier Mining, a subsiduary of U.S. Steel Corporation, with still another 8.23 %.The deposit is located 60 miles north of the town of Gagnon. The extracted ore is crushed, in a giratory crusher, to-8 11 chunks, and from there, it is transported, by rail, to a concentrator at Lac Jeannine.A concentrate containing 65.5 % Fe and 5.5 % Sio2 is produced, using conventional methods like autogeneous mil ls and spirals. The concentrate is then transported by rail to the Port Cartier installations.The installations in Port Cartier include a secondary concentrator, a pellet plant, and stockpiling facilities for pellets and concentrate. The pellet plant has two product lines in paralel, producing a total designed tonnage of 6 millions tons of iron ore pellets, of which 3mi11ions tons are used in direct reduction furnaces.The secondary concentrator is designed to remove a portion of the silica contained in the ore, usually less than 2 % Si02 should remain from the original 5.5 % Si02 in order to produce iron ore pellets which are well suited for use in direct reduction and electric furnaces."

Recent trends of the mining project show that there will be more and more mechanized, largescale mining operations with complex process options to make low grade deposits economically feasible to develop. The global optimization of large scale, complex mine operations will become more important for the future mining. To serve the industry?s future needs, the OptiMine® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) for more than two decades, by using the special solution methodology based on the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) technique in the Operations Research (OR). The program has been beta-tested on more than 20 projects as a multi-time period scheduling and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving complex process options, many stockpiles and dumps, blending requirements, and truck hour limitations. In each project, various operational options are evaluated in OptiMine® to develop strategic planning to help defining company?s strategies and directions. This paper demonstrates how the OptiMine® can be used to optimize a large scale, complex production scheduling problem on a case study coming from real world project. The case study describes multi-pit mine production scheduling optimization with pit backfills in such a fashion that acid generating waste rocks are encapsulated to minimize environmental impact.

"Bubble size plays a key role in flotation. In this paper, we examine the possibility of using passive acoustic sending to determine bubble size. Software was developed based on Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) to analyze the frequency of the acoustic signal emitted from the bubble formation event. Bubble size was determined from the Minnaert frequency. The acoustic-determined bubble size responded to reagent dosage, but was less sensitive than that given by imaging. The constraints of the current acoustic approach are discussed.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important factor affecting flotation performance. It determines the maximum available surface area for collecting and transporting mineral particles. Of interest for process control (Gorain, Franzidis, & Manlapig, 1995), it can be determined by several techniques, such as image analysis (Grau & Heiskanen, 2002; Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez, & Finch, 2002); conductivity (Barigou & Greaves, 1992); drift flux analysis using gas rate and gas holdup measurements (Banisi & Finch, 1994); and optical sensors (Randall, Goodall, Fairlamb, Dold, & Connor, 1989). However, all these techniques have drawbacks.Acoustic analysis of the oscillatory behaviour of bubbles to extract bubble size is another possibility (Leighton & Walton, 1987; Pandit, Varley, Thorpe, & Davidson, 1992; Al-Masry, Ali, & Aqeel, 2005; Manasseh & Ooi, 2009; Leighton & White, 2012; Spencer et al., 2012). "Dynamic characteristics of frozen soil is important for the safe, effective and rapid construction in cold regions and artificially frozen engineering. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of frozen clay with various low temperature and different strain rate were studied by using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test and numerical simulation test. Variation of dynamical parameters and dynamic stress-strain curves of frozen clay were obtained and analyzed. The results of these test show that: Frozen clay exhibits temperature effect and strain rate effect that the failure type tends from plastic failure to brittle failure with the increase of strain rate or decrease of temperature; Under impact loading, frozen clay exhibits three typical dynamic stress-strain curves as strain rate increases, and the maximum strain of frozen clay only linear increases with strain rate.INTRODUCTIONArtificial freezing technology has been widely used in the construction of underground engineering, such as the coal mine shaft, the deep foundation pit, the urban metro and subsea tunnel, etc. Research on dynamic mechanical behavior of artificial frozen soil will provide supports for these artificially frozen engineering (Xu et al. 1998; Ma 2009). However, the dynamic mechanical research on frozen soil is mainly carried out at low frequencies or small amplitudes of the waves, behavior of frozen soil under impact loads or high strain rate loads has not been made clear."

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

In the current research, the role of grain size on the texture formation and mechanical behavior of rolled AZ31B Mg alloy is investigated under shock loading conditions. The grain size of the original asrolled sample was 8 µm and different grain sizes, e.g. 25 and 46 µm, were produced by heat treatments at temperatures in the range of 400-500 °C. In order to evaluate the effect of grain size on the anisotropy of mechanical behavior, the samples were cut along the rolling direction (RD), transverse direction (TD) and normal direction (ND) and tested at strain rates of 900 and 1200 s-1 using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Texture measurements showed that initial texture of the samples cut from the as-rolled sheet is a weak rtype texture. However, a stronger texture was observed for samples with large grains. After shock loading, a (00.2) basal texture developed in all samples and the intensity of the basal poles was higher in samples with coarser grains. This observation is corroborated by high twinning activity and possible activation of pyramidal <c+a> slip in coarse grained samples. Besides, the strength of basal texture increased with increase in the strain rate. Furthermore, the samples with larger grain size showed lower strength and higher ductility, and this was observed for all investigated strain rates.

It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.
