"Silver occurs in about 200 minerals in variable amount s. Silver ores usually have 5 or 6 and in some instances as many as 10 species of silver minerals. All these minerals may have different flotation and leaching properties and should be correctly identified for successful recoveries. Grain size and host minerals which are critical in gold recovery, are not always as important for silver minerals.IntroductionMineralogical factors affecting the metallurgy of silver are , as for other metals: (i) the silver-bearing mineral s ; (ii) their grain size, and when dealing with very fine sizes; (iii) their host minerals; and (iv) the association they form with the silver-bearing minerals. Of these, the silver-bearing minerals are more often the cause of problems during recovery as opposed to gold whose metallurgy is generally more affected by grain size and host minerals. The problems derive mainly from the complexity of the silver mineralogy: over 200 minerals exist bearing the element in major, minor and variable amounts.As a member of group I-B of the periodic table, silver forms extensive so lid solutions with the other two elements in the same group , copper and gold. It combines with sulphur, tellurium and selenium in covalent bonds and with chlorine, bromine and iodine in ionic bonds. Where the fluid composition, temperature and pressure during crystallization allow it, silver also combines with arsenic, antimony, lead, bismuth, tin, mercury, indium, thallium, and germanium in many instances as a minor element in sulphide , sulphosalt and native element minerals. Cations which silver replaces to a lesser extent than copper and gold are iron, manganese, zinc and probably nickel and cobalt."

From a strategic and economic point of view, the development of fine grain high strength steels for long distance pipelines is intensified world wide to satisfy the demand for natural gas in the future.The project related property profiles based on strength, toughness, crack arrest and sometimes resistance against HIC at defined design temperatures require an effective structural refinement using advanced steelmaking and processing in the rolling mill. The microstructure of modern line pipe steels ranges from ferritic pearlitic to ferritic-bainitic and structures where bainite is the dominant component, possibly upgraded by secondary phases. This paper illustrates microstructures and properties of recent orders on line pipe steels both for onshore and offshore application using different processing routes in the plate mill. Examples will be given for SAWL 485 offshore grades, X65 HIC and X70 HIC onshore grades, respectively. Finally, production results of a recent X80 order will be presented.

"Kidd Creek is a large volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposit, located near the west end of the Abitibi greenstone belt, 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario. The rhyolite geology is characterized by a NNE-striking and steeply east-dipping package of rhyolite volcaniclastics upon which has been imposed a strong ESE-striking and north-dipping structural fabric . Massive rhyolite units with grey-black. chloritic cores and yellow, sericitic margins intrude as dykes into the stratigraphic footwall and as sills higher in the stratigraphy. Massive rhyolite units positioned near the top of the felsic pile exhibit an extensive marginal development of hydraulic fracturing and are termed crackle-brecciated rhyolite.The stringer sulphide zone is positioned in a lobate blanket of crackle-brecciated rhyolite at the top of the felsic pile. The stringer sulphide zone is characterized by a mature chemical alteration, being specifically depleted in alkalis and enriched in iron-rich chlorite. with accompanying silica, sericite and carbonate alteration. A suite of trace elements characterizes this mature alteration. The massive rhyolite units, which intrude lower in the rhyolite volcaniclastics, exhibit a core of weak chlorite alteration and strong marginal sericite alteration. Tight or unfractured massive rhyolite units are essentially devoid of sulphide mineralization and exhibit a suite of trace elements characteristic of this immature alteration. It is interpreted that the massive rhyolite units intruded into an already evolving system and ""choked-off"" active conduits carrying hydrothermal fluids and subsequently acquired an immature alteration signature. Rhyolite units positioned higher in the pile developed intense hydraulic fracturing and a mature alteration coincident with the formation of the stringer sulphide zone. In summary, a model, based strictly upon the rhyolite geology, is reviewed to assist in the exploration for volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposits."

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. The control of the distribution and movement of liquid water is crucial for increased reliability and durability of PEM fuel cells: whereas the proton exchange membrane requires a minimum amount of liquid water for optimum operation, water excess in the GDL will impede reactant gas access to the catalyst layer thereby reducing performance. In order to understand the relationships between water management on one hand and fuel cell performance and durability on the other, Ballard has been developing a number of minimally invasive techniques that can throw light on the role of liquid water for both cell performance and durability. This paper introduces a novel measurement method that can provide information about the amount and distribution of liquid water under operation. It is shown how the MEA Resistance and Electrode Diffusivity (MRED) method can be used to determine i) the amount of liquid water in the fuel cell, ii) the pure ohmic cell resistance and iii) the O2 -diffusivity of the cathode. Furthermore, through a combination of the MRED method with current mapping it is possible to determine spatially resolved MEA resistance profiles.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is situated on the east side of Howe sound, about six miles from its head. It is roughly thirty miles by water from Vancouver, one of the important ports of the Pacific and the industrial and financial centre of British Columbia. Howe sound is navigable for ocean-going vessels and Britannia Beach is a daily port of call for the commodious boats of the Union Steam-ship Company, sailing from Vancouver. Few mines are so ideally situated or have so many or varied natural advantages. Copper was first found on Britannia mountain in 1888, by Forbes, but it was not until 1898 that five claims were staked here by Oliver Furry, a trapper. It is from these claims that the major production during the past thirty years has come. In 1900 the Britannia Copper Syndicate was formed and development of the property was commenced. In 1903 the late Grant B. Schley obtained control, and through his efforts the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company was organized in 1908 as a subsidiary of the Howe Sound Company. Since that time, a persistent and progressive policy has been followed, which has resulted in a prolonged and profitable operation. The country in the immediate vicinity of the mine is marked by strong relief, with mountains rising abruptly from tide-water to elevations of 5,000 feet and more. Two broad transverse valleys deeply dissect the area. These are the valleys of Britannia creek and Furry creek. The region has under-gone prolonged and relatively recent glaciation. Over much of the surface there is deep overburden and dense vegetation. The geology of the mine and vicinity has been described in reports by S. J. Schofield (1), H. T. James (2), J. G. Barry, and others (3). The present writer is in accord with much of this literature on Britannia, but during recent years, extended observations made underground have shown that the 'quartz porphyry', or 'mine porphyry', of several of the earlier writers is not the host rock to the commercial mineralization; and he contends that the mineralization occurs in highly altered phases of a complex series of ruffs, flows, and pyroclastics and their autoclastic metamorphosed products.

The North Saskatchewan River flows southwest to northeast through a 22-km-long valley in the City of Edmonton, supplying the drinking water to dozens of downstream communities. During heavy rains, combined sewers occasionally overflow into the river, which has a significant negative impact on the water quality and the sensitive environment. The West Edmonton Sanitary Sewer (WESS) W12, a syphon connecting the Rat Creek Trunk to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant across the river, was designed and constructed to take the overflow to the wastewater treatment plant. Due to the complexity of the project, various 3D technologies were applied to facilitate decision-making processes. 3D models were developed for design review and design conflict detection, while 4D models were established to help create a robust construction schedule. Construction sequencing animation was used to convey design intents and demonstrate construction stages to contractors and workers. The combined applications of 3D technologies helped the project team to identify critical issues, and assured effective communication among engineers, management, contractors, and other parties. Therefore, it provided more opportunities for the success of the project.

"The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."

The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

"In previous publications by the author, significant advances and generalizations of the theory of sampling of broken ores, prompted and confirmed by experimental results, have been presented. This paper shows how to implement these theoretical results in practice. The models to be used are reviewed, with a description of the various sampling parameters involved. Then the methodology for the experimental assessment of those parameters, including segregation factors, is described in simple and practical terms, along with the use of handy sampling protocol charts. Finally, the particularly important case of processing data from a sample-tree experiment is detailed, and examples of applications covering all situations and types of experiments are provided.IntroductionThe reliability of a sample of crushed material , i.e. the expected (average) deviation between its true grade and the true grade of the lot it comes from, mostly depends upon six factors:• the size (mass) of the sample (and to a minor extent, for small lots, the size of the lot);• the size of the rock particles (degree of comminution)• the nature of the mineralization at microscopic scale (i.e., within even the smallest particles);• the geological nature of the mineralization and mineral of interest;• the grade of the lot in the mineral of interest; and• in some cases, the state of segregation of the lot.In practice, one should first disregard segregation problems, and assess sample variability in the segregation-free case. Once the numerical parameters governing this variability have been assessed, then segregation factors can be assessed in turn. In the case of laboratory standard sample preparation procedures, segregation can usually be disregarded altogether."

Coupled reservoir geomechanical simulations have become a key component of caprock integrity assessments for SAGD operations. This work demonstrates the differences of stress evolution when considering coupled versus uncoupled reservoir simulation. Coupled simulation involves the use of a reservoir and a geomechanical simulator with feedback to each simulator to update reservoir or geomechanical variable (permeability, porosity, relative permeability, pressure, temperature, saturations). Uncoupled simulation only passes the pressure and temperature to the geomechanical simulation with no reservoir simulator updating. Therefore, it is possible to complete uncoupled simulations exclusively with no knowledge of geomechanical flow property evolution. However, it is important to understand the differences between the stress evolution in each model for caprock integrity analysis. A single geological model was selected and parametric analysis was completed while varying the geomechanical the production injection pressures (1600 kPa, 1900 kPa, 2200 kPa) for a reservoir with an initial pressure at the injector of 1300 kPa. The results of the six uncoupled and coupled models are compared through the changes in mean stress, shear stress, and strength with focus on geomechanical assessment of caprock integrity.

It is necessary to assess the physical and functional conditions of highway bridges at regular intervals to ensure they still meet their service requirements. Currently, this condition assessment is mainly performed through visual inspection, which has been identified with several limitations (e.g. the timeconsuming assessment process and heavy reliance on inspectors? personal experience). In order to overcome these limitations and enhance the current inspection practice, this paper presents a novel method for automated bridge condition assessment using a hybrid sensing system. Under the method, existing conditions of bridge components are first captured with a stream of point clouds and color images. Then, the bridge components and the defects inflicted on the components are detected utilizing their visual patterns. The detection results are mapped to the point cloud. This way, the 3D information of the components and defects can be retrieved. The bridge condition assessment can be made effectively through the 3D visualization of this information before carrying out any on-site detailed evaluations.

The plant layouts presented and the design concepts discussed, relate to smaller SAG circuits, but can equally apply to larger milling circuits. Included are design concepts and ideas introduced by the various project teams, and the focus is on the primary factors of any layout design which are safety, constructability, operability, and capital cost.

Introduction The Sullivan orebody is a sulphide replacement deposit in beds of argillaceous quartzites. The general strike of the vein is north and south, with rather an abrupt change to northwest in the north limits, and a pronounced steepening of the dip in the same area. An east-west section across the orebody in the vicinity where the change in strike occurs will show the dip-to the east-to be about 10° to 20° above the 4500 level, 20° to 30° between the 4500 and 3900 levels, and 35° to 45° between the 3900 and 3500 levels. It is this last section, averaging 75 feet in thickness, that is being mined by the blast hole method discussed in this paper. Typically, the mineralization throughout this section follows the same general pattern between footwall and hanging-wall, there being solid sulphides for a width of 30 to 50 feet, above which lie quartzite beds of varying widths separated by ore bands which also vary in width and in grade. This banded part of the vein usually extends for 30 to 40 feet above the solid sulphides, with commercial ore terminating on reaching a siltstone bed. Development is generally carried to the highest ore band which, when averaged with the underlying quartzite band, will assay about the marginal limit in lead and zinc. When wide stopes are opened, sloughing to the siltstone usually occurs and, although the values are too low to carry the cost of developing and mining, the caved muck can be handled profitably with only haulage and treatment to be considered.

"Mining is a very water intensive industry. As such, the industry has become dependent on applying alternate sources in efforts to minimize the impact on the locally available fresh water. Sources such as recycled water, sea water, and even acid mine drainage have been applied at some limited applications, while other mines may not even have the option of fresh water available in their region. However, the different sources of water will have varying concentrations and types of soluble salts and suspended solids, which can lead to dramatic differences in mineral processing when comparing these types of waters. Water quality is known to affect bubble generation and strength, mineral surface charge, and even reagent coordination properties. This paper focuses on the exploration of how water quality and soluble salts affect the flotation of iron and titanium containing minerals from feldspar, and the design of flotation collectors for optimal performance in this water.INTRODUCTIONFeldspar is defined as a tectosilicate mineral with the generic structure of MAlxSixO8, where M represents the cation (Celik, 2001). Feldspar is most often found naturally occurring with quartz, iron containing minerals (i.e mica), and titanium containing minerals (i.e. rutile). The alumina component of feldspar is of interest to glass making, while the alkali metal component is of interest to ceramics (Vidyadhar, 2002). In glass making, the alumina is known to improve product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. In ceramics, the alkalis act as a flux; a flux lowers the melting temperature of the mineral mixture, and assists in connecting the other components present in ceramics. Quartz is stated as having a negative effect on the melting point of the feldspar. Although quartz is typically not removed during the feldspar applications in the glass industry, it needs to be reduced for the ceramics industry. Iron and titanium based minerals are known to have negative effects on color and quality of the products in both glass and ceramics. Thus, these “contaminants” must be reduced to a certain product specification via feldspar beneficiation (Table 1)."

"The relationship between froth bubble size as represented by intra-bubble impact distances (IID) and flotation performance is investigated. Experiments using an artificial ore comprising of limestone as the floatable component and silica as the gangue material were carried out in pseudo-steady-state circuit. A method to measure IIDs developed by Bhondayi and Moys (2014) was then used to measure froth bubble sizes as a function of froth height, superficial gas velocity and feed rate (pulp residence time). Samples for flotation performance evaluation were also taken. Results indicate that as froth height increases, the average IID values increase resulting in a decrease in limestone recovery while the grade increases. Increasing gas rate results in lower IID values that are accompanied by high recovery and low limestone grade. The effect of feed rate on both flotation performance and average IID values depended on froth depth and gas rate. Average IIDs largely remained the same at the two feed rates investigated.INTRODUCTIONIt is regarded as obvious that froth bubble size distribution (FBSD) will have an effect on plant grade and recovery. As the average FBSD decreases, the bubble surface area flux will increase making possible an increase in recovery and a decrease in grade. The opposite trend will be involved if average FBSD is increased. However: no method for measuring FBSD has been available, so these trends have not been studied in any detail. Bhondayi and Moys (2014) developed a novel technique to measure or estimate froth bubble sizes. Although they established a potential to use this method in understanding froth performance, no data have been presented to assess the correlation between the estimates of bubble sizes and actual flotation performance. In this work experiments are done to establish how the change in froth phase bubble sizes affect flotation performance. Flotation performance will be evaluated using recovery and grade. How water recovery to the concentrate changes with changes in bubble sizes will also be evaluated. It is known that water recovery is approximately inversely proportional to the square of the overflowing bubbles sizes. It will be interesting to establish how the rate of change of bubble sizes changes with water recovery."

The Brazilian government announced in 2007 its plans to reactivate the nuclear program. As a result of this decision, a new nuclear power plant is already being built and there are studies dealing with, among other activities, the building of 4 to 8 new ones until the end of 2030. Such increase on the country?s uranium demand affects INB, the Brazilian state company that?s in charge of uranium supply. This paper describes scenarios predicted to the Brazilian nuclear industry for the next years and the INB plans to meet the country?s needs in terms of uranium exploration and production.
