"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. "A long-standing objective has been to obtain interpretable measurements of the oxidation-reduction potential in mineral slurries. For this purpose several sensing electrodes (black platinum wire, platinum foil and spiral, gold foil and spiral, and sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and galena) were investigated to determine their response to the presence of sulphide minerals in the pulp, and to the addition of reagents commonly used in flotation. The observed discrepancies between the electrodes may be explained using a combination of the classical mixed potential model for complex solutions and the probability of contact between the mineral particles and the sensing electrode. It is shown from laboratory testwork that gold spirals are preferred over platinum electrodes. Finally, some of the practical aspects of using the electrochemical measurements in a plant environment are discussed.IntroductonThe interpretation of flotation of sulphide minerals in terms of electrochemical (electron transfer) processes has brought new possibilities for process control of selective flotation. Investigations on massive and compacted particulate bed electrodes have shown that the flotation of a given mineral in the presence of a collector can be controlled by the potential induced on the mineral surface. Also, phenomena such as collector less (self-induced) flotation, activation by heavy metal ions, and natural selectivity sustained by galvanic coupling during flotation might also be controlled by electrochemical means.The technique for measuring electrochemical potential in slurries is an adaptation of that used for solutions. The measurement of the oxidation-reduction potential of a solution (ORP , Redox, Eh) is usually carried out by immersing a noble metal electrode (platinum, gold or silver) and a non-polarizable reference electrode: Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE), Standard Calomel Electrode (SCE), or silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) in the solution. (The abbreviation Eh implies the SHE is the reference electrode.) The potential difference between the two electrodes is measured using a high impedance electrometer. ASTM standard D 1498-76 (revised 1981)(1) covers the practical details of such measurements; however, it does not deal with their meaning either in complex solutions or in mineral slurries ."

"This document shows the development of a system called the “On-line charge level determination in SAG mills” (abbreviated as Jc). The Jc variable has certainly been difficult to measure due to the relevant number of factors and variables that affect the grinding phenomena inside semi autogenous (SAG) mills. To assess the feasibility stage of the proposed system, it was necessary to carry out two tests in different sized SAG mills, 38´ × 22´ and 36´ × 15´, respectively. In each test, the system was configured with a battery of sensors of the following types: (1) strain gauge, (2) accelerometer, and (3) gyroscope. The first step involved for charge level determinations was to determine kidney foot and shoulder by means of a study of the energy-impacts on shell structures. The second step consisted of correlating the measured grinding operational variables with the actual charge levels obtained from SAG mill crash stops. This system development is extremely useful and relevant for providing approximations about mass balances inside SAG mills. It will be a suitable tool for explaining “tonnes per hour” variations and determining optimal points under various operating conditions.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a growing necessity for technologies capable of obtaining “on-line data” of the main comminution variables in order to increase throughput. Computer systems have taken an important role in providing important solutions by means of processing on-line device signals (commonly referred to as monitoring). In semi autogenous (SAG) milling, there are many examples of monitoring devices that allow the operational staff to obtain detailed information both mechanically and electronically inside a grinding circuit. In this context, a new technology has been developed to obtain “Jc total charge (%) online” in two different SAG mills called Vibro-Energy® System.As part of the analysis performed by JKsimMet® the Jb/Jc was estimated because it has an important impact on SAG mill throughput. Different scenarios were simulated and contrasted at various theoretical Jb/Jc values in a baseline circuit (Figure 1)."

"THE SYDNEY COAL FIELD has long been afflicted by high costs and low productivities. However, a distinct possibility now exists that improvements can be made in costs, productivities and revenues. If these hopes materialize, the Sydney coal field will once again be regarded as a valuable asset in our national inventory of energy and metallurgical coals. The economic possibilities for the Sydney collieries depend on performance at the pits and in the market place. Because this audience is already well informed about colliery planning, I would like to start with an assessment of the modern coal market insofar as it may relate to the Sydney field. Since 1950 we have seen a vast growth in the population and industrial empires of the western world which has resulted in an enormous and escalating demand for energy. If the energy supply pattern of the first 50 years of this century had been followed, this would have led to an immense demand for coal."

This paper deals with the exploration, development and current operations of the salt mine at Goderich, Ontario operated by the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar Chemical Limited. The rock salt is obtained from a bed 1,760 feet below the surface, 75 feet thick, extending under Lake Huron. Annual production is in excess of one million tons. Large mobile equipment is used. Details of this equipment, as well as the shaft layout, which permits the equipment to be lowered underground with a minimum of trouble are outlined. Mining, crushing and screening procedures' are rev1ewed. Reference is also made to productivity salt distribution and uses.

The diamondiferous Drybones Bay kimberlite pipe is the largest pipe (900 m by 400 m) discovered to date in the Northwest Territories. The pipe intrudes granodiorite of the Archean age Defeat Pluton and contains crater, reworked crater (epiclastic) and diatreme facies kimberlite. In-situ measurements of seismic p-wave velocity were recorded with in-line refraction arrays over representative areas. Refractions from fresh kimberlite were recorded over epiclastic facies kimberlite in the eastern portion of the pipe and returned an average velocity of 4300 m/s. Refractions from weathered kimberlite were recorded on all lines and returned velocities ranging from 1900 m/s to 2200 m/s. Granite surrounding the pipe returned an average velocity of 5400 m/s. The results indicate that there is a definite contrast in seismic velocities between kimberlite and country rocks at Drybones Bay and suggest that seismic refraction surveys may be an effective means of screening kimberlite targets in glaciated areas underlain by igneous or metamorphic rocks.

The response of reclaimed gold tailings to acid leaching was investigated in the laboratory, followed by a pilot-plant program in which the operations of CCD, CIX and SX were tested with plant feed material. These results formed the basis for the design of the extension to the existing uranium plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, commissioned in July 1977. This circuit consists of slimes-dam reclamation by bucket-wheel excavator at a rate of 100,000 t solids per month, acid leaching in pachucas, a five-stage CCD washing section, two parallel C1X absorption columns and two elution columns, SX and an ADU precipitation section. Barren solution is recycled to the CCD section as wash and to the repulper at the slimes dam. The performance of the plant during the first year of operation is compared with the predictions on which the plant design was based. Rated capacity was achieved within three weeks of start-up at a nominal dissolved uranium recovery in the ion-exchange section of around 98%. Owing to recycle, the over-all recovery in the ion-exchange and solvent extraction sections is somewhat higher than this figure.

Abstract The Allard Lake ilmenite deposits, which are currently being developed on a large scale, occur as a series of dykes or lenticular, flat-lying bodies within the northeastern part of a large, oval shaped anorthosire mass of Precarnbrian age which lies with its long axis paralleling the gulf of St. Lawrence. The Lac Tio deposit, discovered by Kennco Explorations, Limited, in 1946, is the largest body of titanium ore of its type now known in the world. It contains upwards of 112,000,000 short tons of ilmenite ore averaging 32 per cent TiO2 and 36 per cent Fe. The ore is an aggregate of ilmenite with oriented microscopic blades of hematite. The deposits appear to be high temperature, late magmatic injections containing only a small amount of volatiles, and bear a genetic relationship to the anorthosite rocks in which they occur. * * * Introduction Recent developments on the ilmenite deposits in the Allard Lake district of Quebec indicate the probability of a major industry, and one which may make Canada the world's greatest producer of titanium pigments and, ultimately, of titanium metal. The presence of ilmenite in this district was first reported by the Quebec Department of Mines following a reconnaissance shore-line geological survey in the year 1941. The ensuing report by Retty describes the occurrence of a number of small ilmenite lenses about the shore of Allard lake and' along two smaller lakes in the vicinity. These showings were later staked by Toronto and Montreal interests who carried out a certain amount of development work, and were described in more detail by Longley for the Quebec Department of Mines. The claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, Limited, Canadian subsidiary of Kennecott Copper. None of the deposits in themselves constituted a sufficiently large body of ore to warrant the major construction expenditures necessary for their exploitation on a profitable basis. The surrounding anorthosite areas, however, were considered favourable for the possible occurrence of other ilmenite deposits

"Modelling and optimization techniques used in the operation of the Detour Lake Mine leach circuit are contrasted to a 1973 review of contemporary techniques used by a major gold producer. The leach circuit at the Detour Lake Mine was modelled using a full factorial Design of Experiment of stirred tank reactor leach tests using circuit feed. Contour plots of extraction were applied in the plant to optimize addition rates of cyanide and the newly-commissioned lead nitrate system. Contour plot sections were used to understand the impact of sulphur in circuit feed at different operating dissolved oxygen concentrations. The 1973 review paper offers insight into industrially-applied modelling and optimization techniques. In particular, a mathematical model of plant data was developed using multilinear stepwise regression analysis. The model was presented using graphical representations available at the time and applied to optimize the rates of cyanide addition. Off-the-shelf software solutions of today allow mineral processors to quickly and easily visualize data, allowing them to re-allocate time and resources spent processing data to generating raw data and extracting actionable information.IntroductionModelling and optimization in mineral processing is the art of reducing reality through judicious use of assumptions to understand a process and leverage this knowledge to engineer practical solutions to metallurgical problems. Data analysis is at the core of this enterprise.While this paper showcases the modelling work done at the Detour Lake Mine (DLM), the primary objective is to pause and reflect on how far the field has progressed since the 1970’s. A snapshot of state-of-the-art gold cyanidation modelling at that time is a review paper of the Anglo American Group’s capabilities (Brittan & van Vuuren, 1973). The objective of this paper is not a play-by-play of the evolution of modelling and optimization since that time. Rather, it is a comparison of the field at two points in time.In 2016, DLM undertook an extensive bench-scale leach circuit modelling program to better understand the impact of cyanide, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate, grind size, density, and pH on gold cyanidation (Fournier, 2016). Two major capital expenditure projects were anticipated for 2017: improvements to oxygen control and a lead nitrate distribution system. While the lead nitrate system was planned for construction, the design parameters had not yet been selected. Following the development of the model, plant trials were executed to validate aspects of the model and the methodology was expanded to address other plant issues, in particular the effect of talc chlorite and pyrrhotite in leach feed.The variables of the bench-scale study are summarized in Table 1. Dependent variables were varied using a full factorial design of experiment with two repetitions for each test condition, yielding a total of 300 tests. Test order was randomized to eliminate bias from independent variables."

Both the Bond and the Hardgrove grindability tests are widely used in the mineral industry to measure the ease of the comminution displayed by a material. The Hardgrove test is mainly used for coals, whereas the Bond grindabifity test is mainly applied to hardrock minerals. The Bond grindability has the advantage that it can be empirically related to the energy required for comminution (work index), whereas the Hardgrove grindabifity test has the advantage of being easier to perform. In an effort to establish a valid correlation between work index and Hardgrove grindability, a series of parallel grindability tests were carried out on a wide variety of rocks and minerals. The standard Hardgrove test was modified to allow for materials with a higher density than coal. A new, satisfactory relationship was established which permits rapid estimation of work index from Hardgrove test data.

"Modern history is full of breakthroughs in technology, all striving to increase productivity and efficiency. What are the elements that should be taken into consideration in the design and implementation of modern automation systems in a control room? Both industry and international standards are now demanding that Human Factors be considered as part of the design of control rooms to maximize efficiency and minimize the potential of human error which can lead to downtime and a loss of profit as a result of interruptions in production. As the current workforce ages and the younger generation matures, this is also becoming a key element when planning a control room. New standards are helping to address some of these challenges that are facing the mining industry today. With an increased focus on the operator, an intelligent and ergonomic workspace can both mitigate risk and optimize production. Optimization is money. We will examine how to analyze and implement innovative control room planning to maximize mineral processing production and minimize risks that can impact overall production and profit.INTRODUCTIONIn this day and age, optimization of production in an industrial environment is becoming more and more of a challenge. With ever changing technology as well as other external factors, this can be especially daunting. There are several key elements that may not be immediately obvious when planning a control room design or renovation, most notably the role of the human in this environment. Fatigue, stress, distraction, reaction times and situational awareness are all critical in a 24/7 environment. With the growing need to include human factors when considering and designing an optimal work and production environment, it is becoming even more important to design a control room that can address as many of today’s challenges as possible.The standard definition of the word “optimization” is “an act, process or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional or effective as possible.” (www.merriam-webster.com). If we apply this to business, what it really means is finding the most cost effective way to achieve the highest level of performance while considering constraints, both external and internal, by maximizing the desired factors and minimizing undesired ones. Sometimes, however, we can get caught up in the day to day processes, without taking a moment to step back and objectively review what it is we need to achieve, and more importantly, the steps that can facilitate our success."

Environmental regulations require means for controlling emissions of SO2 NOx and particulate when burning coal. The combustion of coal in limestone fluidized beds is one of the most promising techniques for the necessary reduction in emissions. Fluidized-bed firing, furthermore, offers potential economies in capital equipment. The world's largest steam generator applying fluidized-bed techniques was built under the sponsorship of ERDA and installed in Rivesville, West Virginia. This paper describes the design and discusses the start-up and development difficulties which were experienced during the period from initial operation to current readiness for commercial operation. Other developments leading to utility and industrial fluidized-bed steam generating equipment are reviewed. The future potential of this promising technique is discussed.

"Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."

"The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The stimulus for this interest arises from several quarters, each of which are independent of the other.• There is a growing awareness of the strategic nature and vulnerability of supply of the raw materials used to produce high performance metal alloys.• The metal alloys are reaching the upper temperature limit for their performance as structural components in engines.• The dramatic increase in oil prices during the late 1970s focussed attention on the need for reduced consumption in many sectors, i.e., there is a need for more efficient engines that operate at higher temperatures - above those tolerated by the present superalloys.• A number of ceramics, especially the structural materials such as SiC, A120 3, AI20rSi02, Si3N4 and the Sialons are produced using non-strategic raw materials and they can exhibit startling performance-auto turbo-rotors are in production mad e of Si3N4 that operate up to 190000 rpm at 600°C, 150000 rpm at 900°C.• Ceramic s are generally of lower density - significant in the weight-reduction of automobiles such as the replacement of a 20-kg five-segment steel leaf spring with a single segment carbon-fibre reinforced unit of 3 kg. • Ceramics also offer major ad vantages in generating, monitoring or controlling the electromagnetic spectrum whether in bulk or thin-film devices that exploit optical, magnetic, pyroelectric, piezoelectric, electronic and I or ionic conductivity characteristics.The opportunity to combine several of these char acteristics in a single material by composition, processing and microstructural design has resulted in an advanced ceramics industry that had world-wide sales in 1980of $4.2 billion (U.S.)(I) and is predicted to grow to sales in the range $7 to $10 billion by 1990 and $16 to $24 billion by the year 2000(2). However, at present, advanced ceramics account for less than 20010 of the total ceramic market."

Introduction Ground failure, violent or otherwise, is a problem to be contended with wherever underground operations are carried out. The character and extent of the failure, whether superficial or of more serious proportions, is determined by a number of factors, among which might be mentioned: the depth and dimensions of the underground workings; the types and distribution of wall rocks; structural features of the ore and enclosing rocks; the degree of metamorphism; the dip of the orebody; concentration of mining operations; the rate of mining; the history of the excavations made on the orebody in question. This last factor implies the consideration of such points as the arrangement and distribution of stoping both past and present, the current sequence of scoping, the type and effectiveness of the support used in old and current workings, and the amount and distribution of unmined parts of the lode. With such a variety of conditions, it is only natural that the situation at one place in a mine will not be the same as that obtaining in another part of the same mine and, more than likely, will be quite different in another property.

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. "Northgate Patino Mines produces a copper concentrate assaying 22% Cu. Moisture content of the product averages 12.5% H20 when dewatering with conventional vacuum disk filters. Recent smelter contracts reflect higher energy costs and increased moisutre penalty charges. This situation forced Northgate to investigate possible alternatives such as rotary dryers and pressure filtration. After laboratory testing, it was found that pressure filtration could economically meet the smelter's requirements. Pilot plant testing was then undertaken and confirmed the laboratory test results. Based on these findings, a model I.S.F. 1500 x 28/22 I.R. Lasta filter press was purchased.This paper describes the Copper Rand dewatering flowsheet the operation of the press and the economics of the process.IntroductionNorthgate Patino Inc. operates 2 und erground copper mines and a 3300 ton per day concentrator located in Chibougamau, Quebec, some 425 miles north of Montreal and 300 miles northeast of Noranda, Quebec.Copper concentrate is produced at a rate of 250 tons per day and trucked to a C.N. siding 10 miles from the mill site and then railed to the Noranda Smelter.Until early 1981, moisture content of the concentrate at 12.5070 was acceptable since smelter penalty charges were relatively low ($0.10 per ton per unit over 10070 moisutre). In January 1981, a new contract was signed in which the penalty was raised to $1.10 per ton per unit over 8070 . This and the increasing truck and rail costs justified the change-over from vacuum to pressure filtration . The Lasta I.S .F. 1500 x 28/22 was then purchased and installed, and operation of the plant started in December 1981."

"IntroductionALTHOUGH the presence of rock salt in the Carboniferous basin of northern Nova Scotia has been known for at least one hundred and twenty years, and salt has been mined at Malagash continuously since 1919, certain characteristics of the deposits make exploration by drilling or surface examination difficult. The surface rocks of the basin are, in general, of Pennsylvanian age, while the salt occurs in the Mississippian Windsor group. The latter rocks are brought to the surface only along anticlinal folds, or as irregular fault blocks. Because of the limited areal extent of these Windsor exposures, and their complicated internal structure, geophysical surveys, especially gravimetric, can be of considerable aid in outlining the more favourable areas.The present paper describes the results of recent investigations by the Dominion Observatory, in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Department of Mines. It includes a regional study of that section of the Cumberland basin lying between Springhill and Malagash ( Figure 1), and a much more detailed survey of the immediate vicinity of the Malagash deposit itself. This deposit had been studied by Miller (6, 7) with the torsion balance nearly twenty years before, and a direct comparison between the results given by the two types of instruments is therefore possible."

ABSTRACT: Surface mining operations must manage variability from within their operations as well as variability imposed upon them by external forces. A framework to manage both internal and external variability through the continuous review and adjustment of a mine plan during active mining lifetime operation is introduced, to minimize lost production and maintain operational safety. The observational approach of “observe, evaluate, interpret, predict, and adapt” is employed as the backbone of this approach. Although written with a surface mining operation in mind, the framework outlined in this paper would be equally applicable to any mining or processing operation.

Iron control and iron residue management and disposal are significant issues in all zinc production processes. This paper briefly reviews the most important primary zinc production routes and discusses the challenges posed by iron control in each of them. The technologies and strategies that have proven successful in controlling and managing iron are discussed. SNC-Lavalin's experience in designing and commissioning zinc plants provides a unique perspective from which to review this aspect of zinc production.
