Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Precipitation runoff from land adjacen1 to 1hese basins leaches 1he mineral from the soils and carries it in solu1ion 10 the basins. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. Evapora1ion during summer concentrates salts in the brines, and chilling of water below sa/Uration poin1 during win1er resu//s in deposi1ion of sodium sulpha1e (mirabili1e) crystals on lake bo//oms. Sodium su/pha1e, commercially known as sa/1 cake, ranks second only 10 po1ash in cen1ral-wes1ern Canada's nonme1allic mineral production. // is recovered from su,face brines, directly from intermittenl salt beds, and, until recently, by solution mining of shallow subswface deposits. Sodium sulphate is extrac1ed from seven alkaline lakes and sail f/a1s in Saska1chewan and one in Alberta. Annual produc1ion is approxima1e/y a halfmillion tonnes. Manufacture of kraft paper is the mos1 significanl marke1 for salt cake, but addi1ional quantifies are used in the glass and detergent manufac1uring indus1ries.

"THIS SESSION marks something of a milestone in that it is, as far as I know, the first session at a CIM Annual Meeting devoted entirely to exploration geochemistry. This is an indication of the general acceptance and widespread recognition by industry of geochemistry in mineral exploration. As a first, I hope it proves sufficiently successful and interesting that geochemical exploration sessions will become a routine part of future CIM annual meetings. The greater use and acceptance of geochemistry has resulted in many investigations and advances, especially in areas such as the Canadian Shield. For a first session on geochemistry, the meeting in Quebec suggested an ideal opportunity to assess these advances and report on the current application of geochemistry in the Shield. The theme of the session is ""Geochemical Exploration in the Canadian Shield - The State of the Art."" A series of six papers will be presented dealing with the various dispersion media - rocks, heavy minerals, ""soils"", lake sediments, waters and vegetation. As a background to the individual presentations, I would like to take a few minutes to briefly trace the history of the use of geochemistry in the Canadian Shield."

"The asbestos mining industry in the Eastern Townships of Quebec has early recognized the undesirable side-effects associated with mineral production, such as air pollution, noise and unsightly waste dumps. In order to efficiently achieve the industry's aim of eliminating or minimizing these objectionable features of mining, all of the asbestos producers in Quebec interchange information, knowledge and design dealing with the environmental control measures through the Environmental Committee of the Quebec Asbestos Mining Association.The paper describes what has been done and what is planned for the future in the various problem areas, such as control of dust emitted during the open-pit drilling operation, control of dryer stack emissions, control of the environment in ore, fibre and tailings handling operations, rehabilitation of the countryside covered by waste dumps, and many others."

Measured detonation pressures of "prills and oil" (94/6 ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) and three of the new "slurry" blasting agents are presented and compared with computed, ideal detonation pressures and with detonation pressures expected from the measured detonation velocities. Results seem to show that the peak pressure in the detonation wave in these cases is the Chapman-Jouguet pressure and that no "spike" exists in these detonation waves. The absence of the Zeldovich-von Neumann "spike" is noteworthy in view of the very long reaction zone lengths of these mixtures. The measured detonation pressure of one of the slurry blasting agents (DBA-3") under steel confinement ( 172 kilobars) is shown to be considerably greater than the ideal detonation pressure of 75 per cent gelatin dynamite (p. = 135 kilobars) despite the fact that the detonation was still somewhat non-ideal in "DBA-3," its computed ideal detonation pressure being 180 kb. The popular 94/b AN /FO blasting agent exhibited a detonation pressure of only 13.5 kb in 5" paper tubes, but 37.5 kb in 5"• steel pipe compared with a computed ideal pressure of 40 kb.

"IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. This paper explains a few examples in this regard."

In 1957 and 1958, ten topographically suitable damsites were investigated along the Peace river between Finlay Forks and Hudson Hope, B.C. Of these, three were eliminated after a reconnaissance survey indicated that the geology was unsuitable for the 650-ft.-high dam contemplated. ?After extensive drilling, five other sites were deemed unfeasible because of geological factors and, in 1959, the two remaining sites were designated as being suitable, one for the high dam and the other for a low dam downstream. The sites are located in the Peace River canyon, on the west and the south? side of Portage mountain, west of Hudson Hope. The site for the large dam, the Portage Mountain dam, has since been investigated by surface mapping, thousands of feet of diamond drilling, a seismic survey, laboratory rock tests and on-site grouting tests in order to establish the possible effect on the dam of all facets of the foundation rocks. Three diversion tunnels, 50 ft. in diameter and 2,200 feet in length, have been driven through massive sandstone and shale, and an intake cut, 500 ft. in length, 200 feet in width and 200 feet in depth, has also been excavated in rock.

"Equipment which may be remotely operated, has some degree of on-board intelligence, and which for periods of time may operate autonomously, is referred to as telerobotic. Recent advances in electronics, computers and hydraulic equipment have dramatically reduced the cost and simplified the process of converting standard industrial equipment to telerobotic control. The benefits of telerobotic equipment include improved safety by removing the operator from dangerous situations, reduced maintenance costs and increased productivity. This technology has been proven in various military, nuclear, and police applications.The surface mining industry has expressed an interest in automation and is characterized by a willingness to use remotely operated equipment, however, the majority of telerobotic equipment currently in use is experimental or prototypical. Potential applications of telerobotic equipment for surface mining include remote operation of equipment near dangerous high walls and other unsafe areas, utilization of robotic trucks for routine hauling operations, and control of jointed equipment. In addition, component technologies of telerobotic systems are relevant to various forms of condition monitoring, operator feedback systems, and vehicle positioning.Attention must now be directed toward resolving more complex problems associated with enhancing feedback to the operator, improving the man/machine interface, and ultimately, improving efficiency. Removal of the human operator from the work site introduces significant complications in replacing the sensory inputs that an operator normally uses to efficiently run his machinery. These can be difficult to define and even more difficult to replicate remotely and may include restrictions pertaining to vision, hearing, and touch.In cooperation with Defence Research Establishment Suffield and the Alberta Research Council, Robotech Industries Ltd. is pursuing the development of additional technologies to further enhance an operator’s ability to control remote telerobotic equipment. These developments include a head-mounted display, additional control station displays and improvements to coordinated motion control software. Prototypes of these developments are expected to be completed and tested by the fourth quarter of 1997."

"An alternative to building new copper smelters, because of either stringent environmental regulations or in order to expand current plant capacity, could be achieved through the retrofitting of old reverberatory furnaces by making use of tonnage oxygen. The CONTOP® technology offers unique advantages over other techniques for this purpose, especially regarding substantial reduction in bath, capital and operating costs. This is possible to achieve since the reverb throughput could be largely increased with no major structural modifications to the furnace.The following options are offered to the smelter operators: dirty concentrates can be treated in an adjacent Contop system, or the cyclones can be mounted on the reverb roof for either dual operation or full Contop operation. ln the tatter case the furnace will be used as a settling chamber and f or slag c1eaning by top blowing with reducing gases.By incorporating Contop technology, the furnace throughput can be increased, higher malle grade, fixation of sulphur from furnace off-gas and substantial savings in energy consumption are possible to attain.IntroductionCopper smelting has been revolutionized during the last quarter century to such an extent that the standard type of plants consisting o f roasters and reverb furnaces seem a thing of the past, or almost. Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

"This paper describes a case study that illustrates how detailed geological engineering results were communicated to address a range of stability challenges in a producing mining environment. Instead of using standard geological engineering terminology, findings and recommendations were communicated as mine design options and mining responses to accommodate possible slope instabilities and associated risk. The resulting medium- to long-range mine plan integrated the potential slope instabilities and associated mining responses to provide a higher probability of planned resource extraction. It also reduced the potential for long-lasting production and processing delays.RÉSUMÉ Cet article décrit une étude de cas illustrant l’intérêt de la communication de résultats détaillés de géologie appliquée pour résoudre un éventail de difficultés relatives à la stabilité dans un environnement minier en production. Plutôt que d’utiliser une terminologie classique de géologie appliquée, les résultats et les recommandations ont été communiqués sous forme d’options pour la conception d’une mine et de réponses dans le contexte minier permettant de surmonter les éventuelles instabilités des pentes et les risques associés. Unfortunately, the geotechnical engineering cycle—characterization, slope design, displacement monitoring, instability management, and failure remediation—that is necessary to manage slope-failure risk is not always well known or understood outside the geotechnical engineering profession. The first introduction many personnel have to geotechnical engineering is when a slope failure starts to develop and appears to threaten the safety and livelihood of their workplace.At that point, the task of communicating the risk management of slope failure falls to the geotechnical engineer, who must summarize analytical methodology, design concepts, monitoring trends, and analysis results, frequently to an audience with limited exposure to the geotechnical field. All too often, the response has been to present a risk-management plan in the vernacular of geological engineering— using terms such as factor of safety (FOS), pore-pressure reduction, and slope unloading—instead of expressing the problem and solution in more readily understood mine production terms."

Production of advanced linepipe steels with strength levels of 685MPa (100ksi) and higher requires excellent control of runout table cooling to produce the desired final fine-grained microstructures, which may include acicular ferrite. Cooling is exerted on the runout table by applying water jets onto the hot surface of the strip and heat is removed from the steel by forced convective boiling. The associated boiling mechanisms are complex and include film, transition and nucleate boiling. A pilot-scale runout table test rig has been built to systematically study boiling heat transfer from a moving steel plate by employing industrial scale headers. Experiments were conducted using test plates moving at speeds between 0.3 m/s and 1.4 m/s. The plates were cooled down from 850°C to temperatures below saturation by a single water jet supplied through an industrial size circular nozzle. Based on these experiments heat fluxes were determined and further used to develop improved runout table cooling models.

The demand for nickel is continuing to exceed inventories, and producers are working vigorously to increase capacity. Many nickel processes utilize the fluidized bed technology for its fast heat and mass transfer, excellent temperature control and low maintenance. The following four nickel applications of the fluidized bed technology have been commercialized: I) Sulfide ore roasting; II) Nickel sulfide (matte) roasting; III) Nickel oxide reduction; IV) Nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. This paper examines the issues surrounding the application of fluidization technology to the above processes, from the stand point of the engineer modeling the process and designing the key equipment, based on the historical success stories and the fundamental principles of flow sheet synthesis. Using the available data in open literature, typical flow diagrams (with convenient bases of 1 t/h feed or product) are developed to illustrate the relative flow rates and to highlight the key features of each application. In addition, some historical background information is provided for each process with supplemental notes with regards to our company's involvements.

"In high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often observed in foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites. Given that comprehensive investigations of deepseated rock slides are extraordinary costly and therefore are rare, most studies are related to investigations in the surroundings of infrastructures and human settlements. In the framework of this study there is an excellent opportunity to gain new insights in the fundamental processes and mechanisms of slowly moving deep-seated rock slides from a case study in the surrounding of a large dam reservoir in Austria. New fundamentals for comprehensive slope stability analyses and hazard assessments and sound prognoses focussing on the long-term stability and deformation behaviour of slopes under changing boundary conditions (e.g. impounding of a reservoir) and/or concepts for mitigation measures can be obtained. Within this contribution, geological field surveys, deformation monitoring, geophysical and drilling data were analysed and presented. Based on the compiled and analysed data, some key-properties of the rock slide will be presented, whereby special attention will be given on the geometry and internal structure, the slope kinematics, as well as hydrogeological and geomechanical aspects.INTRODUCTIONIn high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often encountered in highly foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites (Agliardi et al. 2012). Critical situations may occur when deep-seated rock slides fail in a rapid manner characterised by very high sliding velocities, and/or when they develop into long run-out rock avalanches. However, many rock slides in foliated crystalline rock masses either do not move at high velocities nor do they accelerate seriously and form extremely rapid slides. Displacement rates in the range of a few millimetres or centimetres per year are common for this type of rock slide (Bonzanigo et al. 2007, Tentschert 1998, Watson et al. 2007). Nevertheless, some case studies show an activity behaviour characterised by acceleration phases reaching velocities of even metres per day. However a slope collapse is not expected and these slopes decelerate to much lower base activities. The trigger for these phases can be manifold and include heavy rainfall and snow melt, initial reservoir impounding and water level fluctuations, changes in the slope’s equilibrium state due to antecedent slow deformation processes, ongoing erosion processes along the toe of the slope, and others (Zangerl et al. 2010)."

An electrochemical process is described for converting concentrates of base-metal sulphides to the corresponding pure metals and elemental sulphur. The application of the process to chalcopyrite is discussed. The process is also of potential interest in processing copper-nickel sulphides, and laboratory data concerning this potential are presented. The process creates neither air nor water pollution.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. "Uncertainty is an important feature of many investments, but it is especially important for mineral properties. Mine properties often entail large investments and fixed commitments. Managers in the mining industry often view price uncertainty as undesirable, due to the possibility that the price of the mined commodity will fall to a level that prevents the firm from recovering its investment and fixed costs. This paper identifies pitfalls in conventional valuation methods and outlines a new approach to valuation based on option pricing theory and dynamic programming. In the process, it identifies generic strategies for organizing mine production in ways that allow the owner to benefit from the uncertainty in mineral prices. IntroductionRisk is pervasive in the mining industry. The operation and maintenance of a mine may involve high, and unavoidable, fixed costs. A mine owner can only begin to recover these fixed costs if the price of the mined commodity is greater than the incremental cost of production. But the prices of many minerals are extremely volatile. The price volatility of copper has been significantly higher than the price volatility of a typical stock, for example. A mine owner cannot be sure that the price of the mineral product will remain high long enough for the firm to recover its capital and fixed costs.Mine owners are able to minimize their losses during periods when the output price is below the incremental cost of production by temporarily closing operations. During these periods they incur only fixed costs. While shut-downs help minimize losses, the y do not help the firm recover its initial investment. If output prices remain low long enough, the fixed costs and original investment may never be recovered. High fixed costs, therefore, lead to substantial downside risk."

The bath level measurement is applied in many furnaces to keep control of the level of slag and metal or matte inside. The BLM is used mainly in bath processes, and has not seen much evolution in its basic functionality. For a closed DC FeCr furnace, special demands based on the furnace design and extreme process conditions were considered for the design of a bath level measurement in order to collect valuable information about the furnace operation. This paper will describe these demands and the solutions for them, followed by some of the uses for the BLM in a closed FeCr furnace. Some of the future developments on the BLM conclude this presentation.
