"The Red Chris Cu-Au deposit (522.7 Mt at 0.35% Cu and 0.27 g/t Au), northwestern British Columbia, is one of several pre-accretionary porphyry systems in the Cordillera of westernCanada. It is hosted by an Early Jurassic hornblende monzonite to quartz monzodiorite porphyry which forms part of a suite of dikes and stocks that intrude Late Triassic volcanic strata. Major and trace element chemical data suggest that these Early Jurassic intrusions have compositions which fall on the boundary between alkalic and calc-alkalic compositions. Alteration and mineralization in the Red Chris deposit are more typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems with abundant potassic, sericitic and argillic assemblages and quartz-rich stockworks. It lacks Na- and Ca-bearing silicate assemblages which characterize the alkalic porphyry deposits of British Columbia. One of the more unusual features of the deposit is the abundance of carbonate alteration and veins which occur throughout the hydrothermal history of the deposit. This type of alteration and veining is more typical of alkalic porphyry deposits.The composition of the carbonates vary both temporally and spatially with different alteration zones. Potassic zones, which are characterized by orthoclase±albite±quartz±chalcopyrite±bor-nite±magnetite±hematite and Au/Cu ratios of 1:1 (g/t Au:% Cu), contain minor siderite veins and alteration. Quartz-sericite-carbonate (QSC) zones overprint earlier potassic alteration and comprisequartz+ankerite+sericite+pyrite+chalcopyrite with Au/Cu ratios of 0.5:1 (g/t Au:% Cu). Ankerite isthe main carbonate in this stage but has a variable composition with a more Fe-rich variety associated with mineralized veins. Localized chlorite-carbonate alteration zones, characterized by chlorite+carbonate+quartz±kaolinite±pyrite±gypsum and high Au/Cu ratios [2 to 3.5:1; (g/t Au:% Cu)],contain predominantly calcite. Late stage carbonate-gypsum veins have an ankerite to dolomite com-position which is very similar to the regional carbonate alteration and veins."

Du• ring the winter of 1964-65, a reconnaissance induced polarization survey was carried out on the lake. First, several lines were surveyed over the known mu1.erahza-tion at the Henderson mine; the grid was then extended into the areas of interest. Several anomalous zones were located and drilled; one, of these proved to be of economic interest.

"The Caledonian Belt is mainly underlain by Late Precambrian and possibly Early Palaeozoic rocks, which are in part overlain by younger strata. Most of these rocks are weakly deformed, except for those in some linear . zones, which have been intensely deformed by cataclasis. Mineral deposits related to two distinct metallization episodes have been recognized. The earliest are zinccopper- lead sulphide deposits, which have been concentrated in the axial regions of late-stage cross-folds within the main cataclastic zone. The host rocks are andesitic and dacitic tuffs which show effects of intense talcose alteration, silicification and chloritization. Deposits related to the second episode are mainly composed of copper sulphides with locally abundant tennantite and tetrahedrite, which occur in brecciated and fractured carbonate-quartz veins. These veins postdate the late-stage cross-folds. VLF-EM and high-sensitivity magnetics proved to be very effective in delineating the geology of these deposits."

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."

"An intuitive way to reduce power consumption in grinding operations is to feed the grinding circuit with finer feed by enhancing blasting and fragmentation control. The optimization of blasting with the objective of minimizing power consumption in grinding is not new.The study was based on a Canadian mine that processes a very hard ore. BBA conducted blasting/fragmentation and grinding circuit surveys in 2014. The results of the exercise were used to develop a base case model to simulate the effect of blasting in the operation on the grinding circuit. Tools for fragmentation simulations, particle size measurement and crushing/grinding simulations were used with the objective of reducing the OPEX costs including power consumption.The paper describes the steps involved in the model optimization as well as an economical evaluation of the OPEX savings.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014 BBA was retained by one of its clients to conduct a crushing and grinding survey. The objective of the survey was to update the grinding circuit model with production data and also to develop a tool to investigate opportunities for process improvement.A second phase of the study involved the development of drilling and blasting and crushing models. The models were used to diagnose the operations and to investigate opportunities for process improvement.The objective of the present study is to describe the approach and to identify potential improvements to overall mine site operating costs by better integrating mining and milling operating costs with blasting and grinding models."

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions as it applies to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance as to the minimum size and/or in-situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and probable exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the mine site by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

The paper presents the conditions for determining the selection of methods for methane drainage in Polish hard coal mines. Various factors for the evaluation of methane drainage performance are used, including the methane drainage effectiveness ratio. However, as will be discussed there are limitations to the methane drainage ratio approach resulting from the characteristics of the deposits extracted in Kompania Weglowa S.A. coal mines.

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

"Aluminium rolling processing from ingots to cold rolled coils comes with a lot of challenges especially in controlling defective products in casting, hot mill and cold mill operations. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Steering Committee, supported by McKinsey, conducts briefings with a range of gold producers to share its findings and to understand producers? perspectives on an industry-funded marketing campaign. "INTRODUCTIONDuring the last few years, through Column Flotation Company of Canada ltd, the Centre de Recherches minérales has worked on the column flotation of coal, phosphate, feldspar, talc, graphite, copper, lead-zinc and diamond ores. The operating companies and prospective deposits were located in Canada and in other countries. Since these projects were financed by the concerned mining companies, all results remain confidential unless we obtain permission to publish. Three companies have graciously allowed us to use their information which I will describe in this text. These are the Polkowice copper mine in Poland, the North Coast Industries ltd graphite deposit and a talc company which preferred to remain anonymous. I will also describe our 2 inch column which was used for all tests. Data is also given on how to scale-up the 2 inch column to industrial size.Figure 1 presents a schematic of a flotation column. Feed, at a controlled rate and pulp density, enters at about 1/4 of the height of the column from the top. A controlled rate of air is bubbled into the bottom of column through a fine-holed sparger. The column volume between the feed point and the top of the sparger is called the recovery zone. Tailings, at a controlled rate, always slightly greater than the feed rate, discharges from the bottom of the column. This difference in feed and tailings flowrates is called the bias. The floated mineral is carried through the recovery zone on air bubbles which rise into the cleaning zone which is that column volume between the feed point and the overflow at the top. As the bubbles rise in this zone they are washed of gangue material by wash water which enters over the top of the froth layer. The froth layer is maintained at a given depth during flotation but this depth will depend on the froth cleanliness, for quite a bit of cleaning by wash water is accomplished in this layer."

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

Many high strength aerospace alloys undergo solution heat treatment (SHT) and aging to develop precipitate strengthening. Most simply, SHT involves an isothermal hold in a single phase region followed by relatively rapid cooling to develop a super-saturated solid solution from which precipitates form during aging. However, subsequent properties are sensitively dependent on the details of the SHT, which frequently also serves a homogenization function. Altering the details of the thermal cycle during SHT significantly improves the properties attained during aging, as presented by examples of SHT design for titanium aluminide intermetallics, polycrystalline and single crystal superalloys, and 7075 aluminum.

Underground excavation in hard rock is normally stable at shallow depth except for wedge failure. However, the excavation depth is rapidly increasing recently. In high overburden stress condition, the integrity of rock would be destroyed with degrading rock strength. Therefore, understanding both the peak and the post-peak strengths of hard rock are necessary to assess the tunnel stability at depths. The characteristic of the post-peak strength is seldom studied in Taiwan in the past. Various estimation methods for the post-peak strength degradation were briefly reviewed in the paper. Based on the Geological Strength Index (GSI) system is widely used in the determination of the rock mass strength, the quantitative residual GSI system was adopted to estimate the possible strength degradation for a hydraulic tunnel in Taiwan. The Mohr-Coulomb model (no strength degradation) and the post-peak strength degradation model (strain softening model) were used to simulate the excavation of the case tunnel at different depths. The analyses demonstrate that the tunnel is in stable condition at 600m of depth. And the effect of the postpeak strength degradation on tunnel deformation is progressively significant with increasing tunnel depth. Approximate 3-5 times of increase in crown settlement and horizontal convergence would occur when post-peak strength degradation are considered at 2400m of depth. Severe tunnel deformation may endanger the tunnel stability. Modeling results reveal that the post-peak strength degradation has a great effect on tunnel stability under high overburden stress condition, which should not neglect in deep tunnel design.

The dissolution of low-iron sphalerite, (Zn,Fe)S containing 0.08% Fe, in ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid media was investigated using closely sized fractions of crushed sphalerite crystals and sintered disks made from the crushed crystals. Linear kinetics are observed, and the predominant reaction products are ZnSO4, FeSO4 and elemental sulphur. The leaching rate increases systematically with increasing temperature, and the calculated apparent activation energy is 56 kJ/mol for the sized sphalerite and 54 kJ/mol for the sintered disks. The relatively high apparent activation energy suggests that the rate is chemically controlled, a conclusion supported by the insensitivity of the rate to the disk rotation speed. The rate increases as the 0.22 power of the Fe(SO4)1.5 concentration, and as the 0.22 power of the H2SO4 concentration. However, in the absence of ferric ions, the rate increases more significantly with increasing H2SO4 concentrations, and relatively rapid rates are observed in solutions containing >0.5 M H2SO4. In 0.1 M Fe(SO4)1.5-0.3 M H2SO4 media, the measured rate decreases with increasing sulphate concentrations, added as Li2SO4. The rate of dissolution of low-iron sphalerite is promoted by dissolved copper concentrations as high as 800 mg/L. In contrast, dissolved silver, even in the 0-2 mg/L concentration range, significantly retards the dissolution of the low-iron sphalerite.

Pressure welding is a solid state joining technique that depends on bringing the parts into sufficiently close contact that inter-atomic bonds are achieved. Pressing is more effective at elevated temperatures where plastic flow causes the asperities to collapse; improved application conditions are derived from hot-work research to clarify temperature and strain rate dependence of hot strength and ductility. The substructure evolution systematically studied in hot working to determine dynamic recovery or recrystallization is applied to clarifying that developed in welding. The various processes are affected differently by work-piece geometry and final shape requirements. In addition to pre-cleaning of the surfaces, the plastic flow helps disperse the remaining oxide layers as was originally exemplified in blacksmith hot forging of layered sword blades and in bellldie welding of wrought iron tubes. The presentation critically compares the utility for various materials and configurations of simple pressure, ultrasonic application, diffusion, explosive, rotary and linear friction and friction-stir processes. Diffusion bonding (primarily Ti) with light cleaning, low pressure, little distortion in protective furnace atmosphere contrasts strongly with the heavy upsetting in friction welding, or complex alloy mingling and substructure variations in friction stir joints.

Ventilation of underground workings consists in establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; and requires that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from these workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and that, at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically-operated fans, together with other;. ventilating devices such as doors, over-casts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural air flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion, mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them. While ventilation has practically always been deemed an integral part of coal mining, metal mines have rarely paid much, if any, attention to air circulation until forced to do so by occurrence of some untoward condition or accident. Yet metal mines actually have as great need of efficient circulation of air as have coal mines. The coal mine must remove the dangerous explosive gas, methane, also fumes from explosives and, in occasional places, other gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

"Displacement of rock mass around a tunnel opening varies according to the rock mass properties, insitu stress conditions and applied support in the tunnel. Such displacement is also altered by presence of bands of rock mass that differ in properties. This paper focuses on the deformation behavior of rock mass around tunnel openings at four tunnel sections in Kaligandaki headrace tunnel where extensive instrumentation was done. Based on the actually measured tunnel displacement records and actually measured support pressure; back analysis has been done to estimate rock mass properties and insitu stresses. Numerical analysis has been done to analyze and assess the deformation behavior of the rock mass around the tunnel sections.INTRODUCTION Instrumentation and monitoring of tunnel convergences have significant importance in evaluation of tunnel stability. One of the key aspects of monitored data is that early convergences can be used in estimation of long term convergence. In addition, these data can also be used in evaluation of rock mass parameters and in-situ stresses around the tunnel. Convergence around a tunnel periphery may vary according to rock mass quality. Presence of bands of different rock mass may hinder the displacement pattern in the tunnel. Particularly, displacement characteristic of tunnel periphery in schistose, foliated and deformed rock mass is altered by presence of bands of comparatively stronger rock mass, e.g., quartz veins or presence of shear seams or faults. Similar observations were also recorded in monitored tunnel sections in Kaligandaki headrace tunnel, located in the Nepal Himalayas. Extensive monitoring was done by installing multiple point borehole extensometers (MPBX) at three different locations of the tunnel periphery at four different tunnel sections. In addition, convergence measurements by tape extensometers and installation of pressure cells to record support pressures were also carried out at each of the tunnel sections. Observations showed that the tunnel convergences varied according to rock mass quality, in-situ stress and effective support pressure.Rock mass parameters and stresses have significant role in the extent of tunnel deformation, but these parameters are often unknown or difficult to predict. Back analysis based on actual tunnel displacement records and known support pressure is believed to be an important method in such endeavor. This paper performs back analysis to evaluate rock mass parameters and discusses correlation of rock mass behavior with tunnel deformation and applied support. For this purpose, the rock mass parameters are estimated from actual tunnel displacement records, mapped rock mass quality records and laboratory tested data. Then, numerical modelling is conducted to correlate post peak behavior of the rock mass with actual tunnel displacement."
