"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). "A discussion of the design, challenges and successes associated with the commissioning of the gravity recovery circuit at Canada’s newest open pit gold mine - Atlantic Gold’s Moose River Consolidated Project in Nova Scotia, Canada is presented. An overview of the project, its historical significance and overall flowsheet is provided with special focus given to the design and selection of the gravity circuit equipment including the scalping screen, gravity concentrators and the novel intensive leaching technology selected for the project. The performance of the gravity circuit is benchmarked against the feasibility study process design specifications and the outcomes are discussed. Challenges encountered during commissioning are also presented, including the use of third-party automation and the effects of screen sizing on overall gravity circuit performance. Mechanical modifications made to the Sepro Leach Reactor for the Moose River project are also discussed. A detailed technical review of the mechanical and operational aspects of the Sepro Leach Reactor is provided with key operational data on leach times, recoveries, reagent usage, solid-liquid separation, pregnant solution quality and its influence on bullion purity.INTRODUCTION Atlantic Gold Corporation’s Moose River Touquoy Mill in Nova Scotia, Canada was commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2017 with commercial production declared in March of 2018. The 2 Mtpa process plant uses a conventional, gravity-CIL process. This site was previously mined in the 1870s. Interest waned in the early 1900s but resumed in the 1930s and the mine was brought back into production in 1935 until an underground mine collapse in 1936. This mining district became famous after CRBC radio commenced a ground breaking, around the clock, broadcast of the rescue operations. Over 100 million people listened to the broadcast from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. These broadcasts changed radio, transforming it from a medium for music to on the spot, breaking news reporting. The mill was constructed by Ausenco on a fixed price EPC contract in the historic Moose River gold mining district, 95 km north-east of Halifax by road. The mill will process ore from the adjacent Touquoy pit for the first 5+ years of operation; after the Touquoy reserves are exhausted, the mill will process ore trucked 37 km from the Beaver Dam deposit for an additional 5 years."

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. "The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. Since the last Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy Symposium in Montreal in 1996, the Kokkola zinc plant has increased its capacity from 175,000 t/y to 280,000 t/y by installing an atmospheric concentrate leaching process, which has also affected iron control in the leaching circuit. Major changes have been made at the jarosite residue pond; a subterranean plastic wall reinforced with bentonite and cement has been built around the pond. A new water collecting system that is used for groundwater level control in the pond area was installed. With these two investments in the pond area, it is now possible to prevent any seepage flow from the pond into the surrounding environment. Water pumped from the residue pond is treated in the water treatment plant. This paper describes the behavior of iron in Kokkola's current leaching processes. The treatment of the jarosite, the improvements to the residue pond and the water treatment process are also described.

GOLD-BEARING ores, representing many types, are found widely distributed through the Province of British Columbia. They range from those which by their nature may be considered as complex, to those whose mineral characteristics are simple. Those in which the gold is associated with metallic sulphides provide particular milling and metallurgical problems, the solution of which involves not only detailed laboratory investigation but also a careful consideration of economic factors. The location of an ore-body may have a deciding influence on the adoption of a method for the metallurgical treatment. Whether the ore should be treated with the object of recovering the gold as bullion or as a shipping concentrate is often dependent on such topographical considerations as the position of the mine at or near tidewater or within a reasonable overland distance of a smelter. British Columbia is fortunate in having the Trail smelter situated in the southern part of the Province, and the smelter at Tacoma, Washington, is accessible for coastwise traffic. Both of these provide a ready market for most types of gold-bearing concentrate. In order that the results obtained by laboratory tests may give a fair indication of what should follow in mill operation, it is essential that the test sample should represent as closely as possible in mineralogical character and in grade the ore that eventually will constitute the feed to the mill. In the early stages of mine development this consideration is sometimes overlooked and samples of a much higher grade than would be representative of run-of-mine ore are submitted. Flotation tests on such a sample of ore high in sulphides may show a low ratio of concentration, bu.t if the actual run-of-mine ore is lower in sulphides the mill operation will reveal a much higher ratio. The recommendations for treatment based on the results of laboratory tests may have been against concentration, when in actual operation this would be the most suitable method of treatment. Recommendations based on laboratory tests are necessarily from the results of work carried out on the sample submitted, modified only by such other economic or topographical information as may be known to the investigator. This paper deals with a few of the gold ores found in the six mining districts of British Columbia and is based on investigations made in the Ore Dressing and Metallurgical Laboratories of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa.

The HBMS reverb furnace in Flin Flon was originally designed in the late 1920s. Throughout the decades campaign life has been increased due to operational practices, technological changes and brick quality improvements. In recent decades the campaign life had been extended such that a complete rebuild was scheduled every 3 years. The latest furnace rebuild and start up has been after a campaign life of nearly 6 years. Brick construction methods and techniques along with furnace operational practices allow the present campaign to be double that of the historical campaign length.

In the present paper a new and highly economic route for Fe-separation from HCl leaching processes in hydrometallurgical applications is described. In most ore leaching processes, Fe is involved and needs to be separated; HCl has become an interesting leaching agent, because it can be recycled. Usually a mix of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is obtained which can be hydrolyzed directly (in case only Fe3+) or roasted via pyrohydrolysis (in case of Fe2+) to ferric oxide. Economic oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is described, and potential technologies for regeneration of HCl with separation of Fe are shown and compared.

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Microseismic systems at five mines in the Sudbury Basin provide the basic data for Falconbridge Limited's rockburst research. Daily and long-term analysis of this data as well as underground observations has confirmed the fault-slip mechanism of rock bursting at three mines. A detailed analysis of the complete history of Falconbridge Mine is being conducted and Distinct Element numerical models are being used to simulate both the stick-slip behaviour of faults and the dynamic effects of the induced vibrations on rock and backfill. University research includes acoustic tomographic imaging of the rock mass based on seismic wave propagation and collection of full micro seismic waveforms to allow application of advanced seismic and statistical analysis techniques. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Limited currently has five mines operating in the Sudbury Basin: East, Lockerby, Onaping, Fraser, and Strathcona Mines, which along with the Falconbridge open pit produced 2.8 million tonnes of ore in 1986. The underground mines range from about 600 m to 2000 m below surface and one of the consequences of mining at these depths is the occurrence of rockbursts.Research into rockburst phenomena at Falconbridge began over 25 years ago and research is continuing in an effort to avoid the problem by improved mine design, to protect mine openings from damage by design of effective support systems and to better understand the processes which precede a major fault slip rockburst. Since the early 1980s, significant progress has been made due principally to micro seismic monitoring and advances in microcomputer technology coupled with detailed underground investigations.It is now possible to identify the fault-slip mechanism as the cause of many of the rockbursts which occur at Falconbridge mines. By gaining an understanding of effect of mining-induced stresses on the pre-existing geological structures, areas which may experience rock bursting can be identified and can be protected against severe damage by appropriate support techniques."

This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world's no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany's findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

"Carryover of caustic soda (NaOH) in the steam path caused catastrophic failure of superheater 304H stainless steel tubes in a steam generator and led to an unexpected shutdown after just five months of continuous service of petrochemical following the start of production. The cause of the failure was studied, with a focus on the formation of sigma phase in the weld joint and effect of caustic embrittlement on stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The cracks were examined at the seam weld, heat affected zone (HAZ), and Ubend areas. Hardness was measured for the base metal, HAZ, and weld metal, and microstructures were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crack initiation is attributed to gouging on the precipitated carbide at the HAZ and also the formation of sigma phase in the weld metal, as shown by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. In addition, cracking was propagated by caustic embrittlement because of residual stresses and hammering. Finally, the characteristic feature of fracture was illustrated by SEM fractography, and consists mostly of intergranular SCC and some quasicleavage transgranular. INTRODUCTIONThree key factors are needed for the initiation and propagation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC): a susceptible material, a corrosive environment, and sufficient stress. Although austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to sensitization and IGSCC, they are widely used in boiler and superheater tubes because of their high corrosion resistance, high oxidation resistance, acceptable mechanical characteristics at elevated temperatures, and low cost.Sodium hydroxide is injected to neutralize acidic constituents in the steam path, but caustic can concentrate in boiler tubes and attack the surface metal (known as gouging) even traces of caustic in the steam can deposit on surfaces and cause local concentrations of several percent (ASM handbook, 1992). Not only sensitized grains but also sigma phase formed in the weld metal can initiate caustic cracking. In this research, the cause of the failure of 304H stainless steel superheater tubes in a methanol petrochemical plant in Iran was studied with a focus on the effects of caustic embrittlement on IGSCC."

"The processes for rare earth (RE) extraction include the decomposition of RE ore concentrate minerals, and the concurrent or subsequent leaching of the rare earth elements (REEs) from the decomposed minerals. Ore beneficiation concentrate can be decomposed by, for example, acid roasting, caustic cracking, and chlorination. The REEs can be selectively extracted. The nature of the REE extraction process depends on the concentrate mineralogy and the targeted products. Based on the experience of the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) in RE processing, this paper reviews REE extraction from the major RE minerals, including bastnaesite, monazite, xenotime, ion-adsorption clay, allanite, cerite, and eudialyte. An update on the development of RE extraction processes is also provided.INTRODUCTIONRE processing usually involves two operation stages, physical processing and chemical processing. Physical processing, also known as ore beneficiation, separates the RE minerals from gangue minerals to produce an RE mineral concentrate. Chemical processing, which includes extraction and separation processes, converts the RE mineral concentrate to an RE compound which is either an end product or an intermediate product for the subsequent production of individual REEs or other compounds. The RE extraction process uses one or more reagents to decompose the RE minerals and to leach the REEs into solution. The RE separation process uses solvent extraction, ion-exchange, or chemical precipitation to produce either rare earth oxides (REOs) or individual REEs. The authors have previously reviewed RE ore beneficiation processes (Zhang & Edwards, 2012). This paper focuses on extraction processes for a variety of RE minerals. Table 1 gives the chemical compositions of the RE minerals mentioned in this paper. The varieties of RE extraction methods use many different reagents. These reagents are mainly inorganic acids, alkalis, salts, and chlorine gas. The commonly used acids include sulfuric acid (H2SO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and nitric acid (HNO3). Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) are the most common alkalis. Salts include ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). HCl is normally used to extract RE from silicate ore minerals such as allanite and gadolinite. The alkalis and H2SO4 are mainly used to leach REs from phosphate ores minerals like monazite and xenotime. The carbonate ore RE minerals such as bastnaesite can be treated using either acids or alkalis. HNO3 is mainly used to leach eudialyte and apatite. The extraction of REs from ionadsorption clay deposits uses salt solutions. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is exclusively used in the RE chlorination process which can be used to treat any RE minerals."

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. "The smelter is described by area; feed preparation, continuous furnace line, gas handling and auxiliary systems, blister refining, Hazelett casting of thin anodes, and scrap remelting. Early smelter campaign data is presented and compared to design. Some modifications to the basic design of the furnaces and gas trains are indicated, with their respective impacts on improving smelter performance.Plant compactness, the use of jumbo tanks, and a highly automated electrode handling system are featured in the refinery description, with brief coverage of the liberator and slimes leaching sections. As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.
