The Daly-Judge Tunnel, begun in 1887 to drain mine workings, is now a source of potable water for the Municipality of Park City. The water is exceptionally clean; however, when roof falls occur, suspended solids levels become too high and water from the tunnel cannot be used in the treatment plant. In 2001, the tunnel was inspected and rehabilitated to ensure that the water supply for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games would be uninterrupted. Twenty-five timber tunnel sets were removed, and 86 steel sets were installed. Timber lagging was installed or replaced over about 230 m (750 ft) of tunnel length.

A core sample for this study was taken from the sulphide ore of the Geco Mine. The subsequent research was based on the assumption that a part of the scattering of strength-grade data could be correlated with variations in the chemical and/or mineralogical compositions of the samples. The results demonstrate clear relationships between strengths in tension and compression and the zinc-iron contents of the rocks.

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. "This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

"The need for grinding mills of ever increasing capacity and greater feed openings has tended toward mill trunnion diameters being beyond the size limits for roller bearings.Hydrodynamic plain bearings need to be wide enough to achieve the necessary bearing pressure in order to obtain an oil film with sufficient carrying capacity at low rotational speeds. This greater width increases edge loading resulting from the deflection of the mill under load.Because of the high surf ace pressure involved, the life of support rollers and girth rings is often inadequate-fatigue leads to flaking on the contact surfaces. Heat treatment of the girth rings also has its problems.The hydrostatic shoe bearing permits unlimited trunnion diameter and a high carrying capacity. The self-aligning shoes compensate automatically for radial deviations and large deformations can be tolerated at the girth ring.The sliding surfaces are completely separated by oil under pressure, enabling negligible starting torque and good damping capacity to be achieved together with low rotational speeds.IntroductionHydrostatic bearings have been known within machine technology since 1865, when the Frenchman Girard received a patent for such a bearing. During the following 75 years, these types of bearings were used sporadically for thrust bearings, primarily in water turbines. The first usable radial bearing was not designed until 1938. Since the 1950s, when hydrostatic bearings started to come into use within the field of machine tools, extensive research and development work has been carried out at various institutions and research centres throughout the world. Many support problems are now solved by means of hydrostatic plain bearings and the primary factor in deciding to use them is their unique characteristics:• ability to carry high loadings• no starting torque• large damping capacity• no wear• large running accuracyThe hydrostatic shoe bearing has been developed specially for use in the heavy machine industry, with the requirements for high loadings and large support diameters which this market demands."

FOLLOWING World War II there was an urgent need for the development of domestic sources of ilmenite to take care of the expanding needs of the titanium dioxide pigment industry. In addition, there was the interest by the pigment manufucturers and others in titanium metal. Prior to the war the pigment industry in the United States had obtained its major tonnage of ilmenite, analyzing 55- ?60 per cent Ti02, from India. However, as a result of the shipping situation which developed during the war, the pigment manufacturers had to consider the use of lower grades of ilmenite located on this continent .and several companies undertook extensive exploration programmes to locate and develop such orebodies. Probably the most significant deposit that was found as a result of these ?programmes was the orebody .at Allard Lake, Quebec, owned by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation. This ?Company was formed in 1948 by the Kennecott Copper Corporation and the New Jersey Zinc Company to mine this ilmenite ore and treat it in electric furnaces to produce titanium dioxide slag for the pigment industry and iron for the steel industry.

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), Pt, Pd, Rh, have been widely used as a three-way catalyst to clean discharged gas from automobiles and therefore a considerable amount of the spent catalysts is generated annually. This paper proposes a novel concentration technology of PGMs by utilizing the double-deck structure of PGM bearing alumina-ceria and cordierite phases. The applied technologies are a combination of heating-quenching, selective grinding and screening for separating alumina-ceria phase from cordierite. Temperature change as a function of quenching time and the thermal stresses applied to both phases were simulated and calculated by FEM, and it was clarified the mechanism of micro-cracks generation at the phase boundary and micro-cracks in alumina-ceria phase, which indicated that separation of alumina-ceria phase from cordierite and selective breakage of alumina-ceria phase could be achieved in the subsequent selective grinding with an attritor. This process could concentrate 46 wt% of alumina-ceria phase into fine fractions with 86 % recovery efficiency. The remaining alumina-ceria phase can be further recovered by applying flotation and so on.

Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. Since the late Dr. Keith Brimacombe, et al, performed tests at the now-closed Asarco Tacoma smelter and the Inco Copper Cliff Smelter on Peirce-Smith copper converters almost thirty years ago, many Pyro-metallurgists have investigated using the technology. To the best of the authors knowledge, except for shrouded tuyere technologies using substantial oxygen enrichments, the core idea of using high pressure air injection has not been implemented anywhere in the world. This paper reviews the fundamentals of this technology and summarizes the basic economic considerations. It also presents the circumstances of where and when high-pressure injection might be justified.
