The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. Investment decisions in the mineral resources sector are made on the basis of an assessment of the economic potential for a mineral deposit. Given the supporting information for the location, scale, and quantity of the commodity of interest, miners and investors aim to make risk-informed decisions when considering further investment. The objective of resource classification is the synthesis of various types and quantities of geologic information used in resource model construction to assign confidence categories to the estimated mineral resources, which can then be used to support informed economic decisions. In this paper a risk-based classification scheme for iron ore mineral resources using conditional simulations is presented. The method involves categorisation of each block according to a confidence level, considering expected recoveries from a kriging model over mining production volumes. The realisations of the simulated model are used to assign risk-based confidence categories to zones of the ore deposit. One motivation for this work is to assess the sensitivity of the scheme to geologic uncertainties. Specifically, that which uncertainty in the layout of mineralising alterations and weathering overprints influence variabilities of associated rock properties and the likelihood of obtaining expected ore recoveries. It is shown these risks have material implications for a project’s economic potential. How the scheme can be extended to the grade control context and the value subsequent grade control activities is also quantified.

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

Since January 2019, BHP Olympic Dam have been trialling the use of a drone based LiDAR mapping system for the purpose for surveying stope voids. This new technology utilises Simultaneous Location and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm providing positioning, stability and collision avoidance in GPS denied environments. Implementation of this system utilised underground personnel trained in the equipment’s use. The study’s intention was to evaluate the effectiveness of this equipment versus traditional surveying methods in regards to quality, safety and productivity. The trial results showed a marked improvement in the quality, productivity and personnel safety when conducting surveys. The use of the drone and LiDAR system reduced personnel and equipment requirements for surveys, thus allowing these resources to be deployed elsewhere. The technology’s simple and rapid deployment allowed multiple surveys to be conducted during a 12 hour shift, including ad-hoc work with minimal disruption to underground operations. After the drone’s initial trial, further work was conducted to utilise the Hovermap LiDAR scanner on other platforms to increase utilisation. A mounting system was created allowing the LiDAR to be mounted on a remotely operated loader or vehicle. This enabled drawpoint scans to be taken directly after production completion, resulting in faster stope close outs and drive scans for convergence monitoring. Implementation of the LiDAR system has resulted in improvements in the stope production cycle by reducing delays previously associated with data capture. The increase in the volume and quality of data has also allowed in-depth back-analysis of stopes in new mining areas to be conducted, which have driven improvements in the design process.

Philsaga Mining Corporation (Philsaga) had three main aims in converting their lining system from steel to metal cap. They wanted to increase mill availability, minimise localised high wear and optimise particle breakage to deliver increased efficiency within the milling circuit. Combining Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling and empirical interpretation of liner wear resulted in a rigorous approach to understanding the impact of mill liners on overall mill performance. This new understanding was subsequently used to not only derive a new lining design to optimise performance and thereby improve overall plant economics, but also to guide further lining development.In this work, detailed DEM modelling, developed from actual plant data, together with optimising liner design for wear paved the way towards the installation of a Metal Cap lining system at Philsaga’s Ø6100 mm SAG Mill. The results were a reported increase in SAG mill throughput of 16 – 20 per cent due to improved breakage through more efficient use of installed power, a reduction in localised high liner wear with overall increase in liner life and reduction in liner replacement time. Site also reported an increased gold recovery of 2 per cent which the improved breakage might have contributed to. This paper will present the design challenges and compare the Metal Cap lining systems performance against Steel lining system. As mining companies have to go deeper in search of ore and coal, the importance of protecting the highwall increases. Wall fatigue also increases with importance of the long life expectancy of a highwall, in particular the impact of fatigue influenced by resonance. Resonance is the tendency of a material to oscillate with greater amplitude at certain frequencies when exposed to a periodic force. Until recently, only dominant frequencies, either natural or induced, were all that could be measured through the fast Fourier transform of the blast-induced wave form.This paper presents a novel method to accurately predict the resonant frequency of a highwall. In fact, the method can predict the natural frequencies between any two monitoring points placed in line with the source of impact, and as such it can be used to determine the resonant frequencies of any physical object. The method not only predicts the resonant frequencies of the material; it predicts the structural response of the total frequency spectrum. This method helps describe the response of a mechanical structure to excitation. It describes the structure’s efficiency in the use of energy, that is, whether energy is dampened or consumed in resonance.The initial predictions have been so accurate that it made it possible to determine the fundamental frequency and the first six harmonics of a highwall in a northern Queensland coalmine. With the use of electronic detonators, the blast can be timed with a repeating delay to create an induced artificial frequency that has been determined to retain the least amount of energy.CITATION:Osterman, R, 2015. The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

Miners and mineral explorers are concerned at the increasingly hostile environment being generated towards their industry and their profession. There is little official or public recognition that the mining industry is essential for the maintenance of the country's standard of living; a large part of this hostile feeling is caused by the assumption that mining destroys large tracts of our attractive countryside. This paper presents a historic review of the impact on the countryside of the major land using groups commencing with the Polynesian migration. European farming practices, subsequent expansion of the urban dweller and the land management practices of the two Government Departments, Lands and Survey and New Zealand Forest Service who between them control half of the total land area, are discussed. Estimates of total land area to date, directly and indirectly affected by mining have been calculated and a broad estimate of 18 000 ha or 1/1500 of total land area is indicated; current annual mineral production requires some 240 ha. These gross areas take no account of subsequent land rehabilitation, its improvement upon the original in some cases and the recreational, historic and aesthetic areas gained. Comparisons are then drawn with some current land practices in New Zealand.

A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

A world-class example of sustainable development in practice, the Local Resource Development Initiative (LRDI) grew from agreements between the Ambatovy nickel mine developers and the Government of Madagascar. A program of training and community development, the LRDI aims to maximise local benefits by optimising the integration of local resources during the construction period of the mine. By local resources, we mean the local labour force as well as local goods and services. Begun in 2007, the foundation of the LRDI is to integrate local resources into the mining project and where gaps are identified, design and implement training, mentoring and other programs to fill those gaps. The principal accomplishments are: the establishment of training centres that trained over 4000 people in little over one year, 96 per cent of whom hired to work at the mine; a support program for local micro, small and medium enterprises that has led to the award of 65 contracts for goods and services with training and mentoring of over 100 local businesses; and a number of special projects that have, among other results, strengthened local agricultural development and created employment for young people. The LRDI provides unique insights into key indicators and lessons learned to strengthen the social and economic sustainability of mining projects in developing countries. The paper will discuss these in terms, among others, of: the importance to project success of upstream planning to address socio-economic issues; the role of civil society and other local partners to strengthen and expand sustainability outcomes, and to spur governments to demand that major projects promote economic and social sustainability; and the integration of mine sustainability with sustained regional social and economic development.

In today’s underground mass mining, the orepass is an important part of the infrastructure as it connects two or more mine levels and is used for conveying or storing large amounts of material. One of the main risks related to an orepass is when operational or structural failure occurs, leading to long-term loss of functionality. Developing or rehabilitating an orepass when major failure has occurred is a time-consuming and expensive operation, and the risk of a long-term orepass loss motivates the development of alternative transportation strategies to ensure the continuation of smooth operations in large underground systems. The study presented in this paper has been done at the Loussavaara Kiirunavaara AB Malmberget mine in Sweden, where iron ore deposits are being extracted using sublevel caving. Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. The Project Hobson tunnel excavation was the first use in New Zealand of an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). The tunnelling on the project was very successful and break-through was achieved three weeks ahead of program, demonstrating that tunnelling can be undertaken in Auckland with a high degree of cost certainty.Project Hobson involved the replacement of an existing 90 year old above ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which had reached the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined bored tunnel. The NZD$ 118 M project has provided several environmental benefi ts to the Owner, Watercare Services Ltd and the local community:· provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,· virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, and· remove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes.Auckland’s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the city centre.The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ‘sticky spoil’ management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. The paper also highlights the reasons for the success of the project, including a rigorous approach to risk management during design, and effective planning during construction. Other useful data such as the effect on the watertable caused by closed face tunnelling, and ‘faceloss’ estimates derived from settlement arrays are included in the paper.Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report – one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia.

The mining industry has come through a period of major change in community expectations regarding safety and environmental impact and these changes can be expected to continue in the future. These changes are ultimately reflected in Government regulations and industry safety standards and form the basis of the ælicense to operateÆ. Equally, advances in technology have made possible new equipment and processes either available now, or close to completion, that will allow mines to meet these more stringent expectations if properly introduced. Changes in technology provide opportunities for mine management to introduce new systems that will remove people from hazardous areas and lead to improvements in the ætriple bottom lineÆ. In a longer time frame of five to ten years, novel and advanced technologies that are currently being developed will deliver new mining methods and conversion of presently uneconomic resources to ore. This is consistent with the time frame required to develop a new mine from discovery. Strategic decisions can be taken now by mine designers to enable the introduction of these major technology changes. Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation is a challenging and demanding field, requiring application of professional knowledge, skill and experience of the highest order. If the many potential pitfalls are to be avoided, however, there are two other requirements which are of equal, if not greater, importance:good communication, and common sense. Estimation of Mineral Resources and particularly of Ore Reserves is almost always a team effort, involving a number of disciplines. Good teamwork requires good communication, both between team members and between the team and other parties having an interest in the process. Breakdown in these lines of communication can have far reaching effects on the project under consideration. The need to use common sense during a Resource or Reserve estimation exercise would seem to be self-evident. It is surprising, however, how often rigid adherence to procedures and methods prevails at the expense of clear thinking, usually with adverse and sometimes fatal effects on the project under consideration. This has become increasingly true as computerised methods have assumed a central role in Resource/Reserve estimation. The critical question that estimators should ask themselves at all stages of the process is: æIs what is being done sensible given the data available, what is known of this deposit and the purpose of the exercise?Æ
