CSA Mine, named after the nationalities of the mines first owners being Cornish, Scottish, Australian, is one of Australia’s deepest and highest-grade copper mines. A combination of the modified Avoca method and shrinking was a standard practice where production rings were fired against and bogged to waste fill. This method resulted in dilution and involved rehandling of waste material to refill the bogged stopes in the Western region and the QTS Central. The introduction of pre-charging blastholes using a wireless initiating system (WebGen™) has enabled CSA to design and fire stopes in reverse. This involves the use of a pre-charged Temporary Rib Pillar (TRP) against the waste fill material in a previously mined stope. The temporary pillar reduces dilution and improves conventional bogging as material is blasted towards the drawpoint rather than towards the waste fill material. Additional drill, prep and blast re-work is reduced or completely removed as rings can be charged prior to, in conjunction with, or after, charging of the slot. This is a safer practice as the charge crew spend no time working adjacent to a brow or open void. A TRP trial was conducted in the western orebody at CSA. The risk of exposure to a brow or open void while charging underground, and the bogger rehandling of waste material was successfully eliminated. Once reverse stoping was established in modified avoca stopes at CSA, two TRPs were implemented in challenging ground conditions in the QTS Central region. The TRPs were utilised in a retreating four-way intersection to extract a central diminishing pillar to close the level out. The ore recovered in this stope provided 5 per cent of CSA’s copper for the year. Without pre-charging with a wireless initiating system, two 5 m pillars totalling 6936 t of ore at 7 per cent either side of the stope would not have been recovered. CSA has implemented the practice of reverse stoping in modified avoca stopes using TRP for ten stopes since the successful trial. The development of additional blasting techniques enabled by precharging with wireless initiating systems is currently underway in the QTS North orebody at CSA Mine.

Active explosion barriers are used to contain and suppress a methane gas and/or coal dust explosion propagation, including localised mine fires. Early research indicated that these active explosion barriers could be used on a mechanised cutting machine, making it the only technology that could suppress an explosion during its propagation phase at the cutting face. Thereby not only adding protection during mining operations but also reducing the development of toxic gases, fatal temperature increase and fatal overpressure build-up. During their evolution over the last two decades, further advantages of Active explosion barriers were proven in mine operations in countries such as South Africa and China. Characteristics such as effectivity, efficiency, mobility and space restrictions allow these systems to be used in various locations within a mine operation, including highwall operations. This improved technology contribution to safer coal mining was recognised by mine operators, workers and regulators. The Queensland’s Recognised Standard 21 (Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), 2021) stipulated active explosion barriers as a technology to ensure the safety within their underground coalmines. The mobility and flexible implementation of the active explosion barriers allow a feasible and practical solution for all critical locations for explosion and fire management in an underground coalmine. The conformance to the Recognised Standard can be achieved all underground coal mining operations such as Bord and Pillar, and Longwall mining. This paper describes the conformance, implementation and use of Active explosion barriers for Longwall mining and development as well as Bord and Pillar mining in Queensland’s underground coalmines.

In addition to GHD’s global footprint, the company also has a significant Victorian presence, including a permanent, well-resourced regional office in Traralgon, approximately 10 km from Loy Yang, as well as a permanent site office.A joint paper on the Loy Yang mine professional services alliance model was written for the AusIMM International Mine Management Conference in 2006 by Woods and Wood. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. Whereas mine reconciliation is a well-established month-end process for most modern mining operations, the resource sector has yet to endorse uniform reporting factors against which model accuracy and metal recovery can be formally assessed. Logically, any comprehensive reconciliation framework should facilitate comparison between period reserve, mine and mill and production figures. Historically, Parker’s F Series ratios (Parker, 2012) are often used in some form by mine operators, although they are rarely shared externally, as formal definitions have yet to be accepted. This paper presents a structural extension to the reconciliation process, wherein resource ratios (R Series factors) are used to quantify the long-term impact of the information effect, together with dilution and ore loss. A case study from the El Limón Guajes (ELG) Mine Complex in Mexico is used to demonstrate how an R Factor Series can be implemented to facilitate operation optimisation, over and above conventional F Series reconciliation treatments. This approach is applicable to any mining operation.

"In March 2015 Northparkes Mines (NPM) installed a process mineralogy facility on-site. The laboratory included a TESCAN TIMA scanning electron microscope (SEM) and was the first SEM facility to be commissioned on a mine site in Australia. While the initial intent of the quantitative mineralogy laboratory was to provide information to drive processing plant improvements, in practice, it has been utilised for so much more and is now serving as an integral link between departments on-site. This multidisciplinary approach to orebody knowledge is a new strategy for NPM whereby all parts of the value chain are aligned towards the common goal of achieving process efficiency and stability while still maintaining high throughputs. The NPM experience is presented as a case study to illustrate how on-site process mineralogy can drive a realignment in business strategy with a common goal of mill optimisation, stability and more realistic forecasting through orebody knowledge and information sharing between disciplines.Citation:Jones, K and Morgan, D, 2016. Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. This paper stems from research and development in sensor and sorting technologies towards future sustainable mining undertaken by the UBC Mine-Mill Integration group in collaboration with MineSense Ltd. Sensors and sensor-based technologies such as ore telemetry and sorting are envisioned to be a significant component in achieving such ‘invisible’ future sustainable mining. Such technologies offer high flexibility and power in use: delivering valuable information from the very preliminary stages of mining exploration through to final upgrading of the ore preceding the fine comminution stages. This paper reviews sensors and sorting as enabling technologies towards a future smart mining operation and introduces a model in which sensor-based exploration (down-the-hole sensing), ore exploitation (smart-shovels), transportation (smart-conveyors) and preconcentration (sensor-based sorters) are effectively integrated to increase the present value of operations. It is anticipated on the basis of several case studies that an effective use of sensor technologies through tomorrow’s ‘smart mine model’ should lead to several positive impacts ranging from increased mining production, to reductions in transport costs, overall energy use and waste generation. In this way sensors can be used to maximise the profitability and present value of the mining operation from the exploration stage through to mine closure.

The reduction in the number and duration of machinery and equipment failures is an important source of economical efficiency enhancement in the Polish coal mining industry.Non-dismantling methods have been thus developed to evaluate the technical state of machines. Among these viroacoustical methods are the most effectively employed. Two-directional organisation of the testing can be chosen, such as periodical and continuous inspection. The monitoring methods for ball bearing, rope tension uniformity, longwall shearers, main fans and shafts installations etc. Instrumentation for monitoring measurements are either of intrinsically - safe or explosion - proof construction, which enables using them in a gas-hazard atmosphere. The development of these procedures has led to the trials to insert the diagnostic methods into the organisational scheme of a coal mine.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. New Zealand has an established history of gold production beginning with the gold rushes of the 19th century in the Coromandel, Nelson/Marlborough, West Coast and Otago regions. Despite this, the number of significant modern hard rock gold operations has been limited in recent years due to a lack of sustained exploration capital and not limited geological prospectivity.The New Zealand Government is actively encouraging explorers to invest in New Zealand through a series of targeted promotional visits, more importantly through the acquisition of precompetitive regional geophysical data. Data collection has been completed over the prospective Northland epithermal district and a large portion of the South IslandÆs west coast that is prospective for both orogenic gold and intrusive related gold.Analysis of new data has been an important component in aiding the generation of exploration targets from prospectivity modelling. Determining the prospectivity of an area involves reviewing all the available data and analysing it with respect to the most up-to-date mineral system model for the mineralisation style of interest. Using the weights of evidence modelling approach, the most prospective areas for epithermal gold-silver, orogenic gold and intrusion-related gold have been identified. The key exploration parameters relevant to each mineral system are first represented spatially and then statistically combined into a single prospectivity map. New potentially economic deposits could be found by focusing exploration on targets identified from these models. One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficient operation of a tailings dewatering circuit comprising a thickener and filter press through proper control and automation. It is common to see thickeners and filter press circuits each with their own control systems. This can cause multiple issues when trying to increase efficiency and reliability of the tailings management process. By automating the thickener and filter press controls, you are eliminating any delays and inconsistencies caused by human error and process variations. When done properly the system can maintain a consistent product as the feed characteristics change. Previously, operators would have to monitor the process parameters and adjust the system accordingly. This can now be accomplished using state of the art process control equipment that continuously monitors and adjusts critical variables using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops. There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

After decades of turmoil, Rwanda launched its Vision 2020 in 2000 aimed at reconstructing government and addressing poverty. Implementation focused on the agricultural sector, infrastructure and education. Later economic development and poverty reduction strategies recognised that expansion of tantalum, tin and tungsten mining could potentially diversify Rwanda’s economy and improve the balance of trade. In 2005, comprehensive environmental legislation requiring environmental impact assessment for all new mines was introduced. Since 2006, government-operated mines have been privatised and illegal artisanal miners encouraged to form cooperatives. The government passed a new Mining and Quarry Exploitation Law in 2008 and approved a new Mining Policy in 2010. This policy was influenced by the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), which the African Union approved in 2009 to ensure African countries obtain reasonable benefits from exploitation of their mineral wealth. The Rwandan mining industry has grown significantly over the last five years and the second economic development and poverty reduction strategy, released in September 2013 forecasts a further three-fold increase in production in the next five years. The strategy prioritises the mining industry and proposes new legislation, better information, greater transparency, encouragement to investment and use of best environmental and technical practices. It also proposes that Rwanda develop a ‘green’ mining sector featuring a ‘model’ mine that is fully funded through green investment and incorporates renewable energy systems, water treatment systems, forestry schemes and local training. Many international development partners have contributed to the current legislative framework and are monitoring environmental and social performance of mining in Rwanda. Local communities have generally benefited from mining and the new mines show improved environmental performance. The major challenges are dealing with the legacy of past haphazard mining practices and establishing linkages between the mines and local industries to create broader economic development.CITATION:Wilson, I H, 2014. Reliable particle size analysis in minerals processing plants is a critical factor to the economic return of a plant. As recovery of valuable minerals is compromised for particles outside the optimal size range, effective and reliable particle size analysis is more crucial than ever, particularly in the current upswing of the global commodities market. Inefficient particle size analysis can lead to excessive over-grinding, thereby significantly increasing energy consumption and reagent costs, whilst negatively affecting process operation, thickening capacity, water recovery and tailings disposal.Australia’s first installation of a particle size analyser in Iron Ore has been monitored with great interest by the industry. Previously, manual size sampling at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo fines processing plant involved off-site sample analysis, with a turnaround measured in days. The Outotec PSI® 500 particle size indicator, commissioned in July 2009, takes approximately three minutes per line at site.The paper will include details on the following:• plant description,• sampling design,• PSI® 500 analyser functionality description, and• key learnings from site.

After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.
