The minerals industry focus over much of the past twenty years has been on cost reduction and production growth supported, but not driven, by technology improvements. Mergers and acquisitions, and the demands of financial markets, have been high priority items whereas research and development and technology based innovation have received less attention and have been cut back in many companies. Technology improvements will be critical if the industry is to make progress on the stated aims of improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage and maximising recovery from deposits. They will also be important for improving capital efficiency and in treating difficult deposits. However the role technology based innovation will play both in the overall industry, and within individual companies, during the next decade is quite uncertain. There are major challenges in progressing technology based innovation in an industry with limited technical resources which is dominated by long life high capital operations. Specific opportunities for energy and productivity improvements exist but face significant technical and structural barriers that need to be overcome if the industry is to significantly improve performance. Current evidence suggests that changes in approach will be needed for these improvements to be realised. Recent studies in the United States and Canada have highlighted the wide range of energy performance across the industry and the scope for marked improvement from both incremental improvements and increased research and development. Comminution, material transportation and underground mine ventilation were identified as high priority areas. Opportunities within these areas are discussed both in respect of specific technologies and in how they may change performance. The role of open innovation as a source of new technology is also discussed. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.

The Granites Gold Mine Callie gold deposit is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert. Gold mineralisation occurs due to a complex interplay of geological factors which include but are not limited to favourable lithology, structure, alteration and quartz veining. High-grade mineralisation, while pervasive under favourable conditions, is highly variable over short distances and is very nuggetty. In contrast, the lithology and geological structures that host the mineralisation are very continuous. Orebody modelling techniques have evolved over time because of a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls. Modelling issues such as sampling and assaying accuracy, modelling method, data density, gold population statistics, geological interpretation and domaining, grade boundary and calculation conditions, and model block size are constantly being reassessed in an effort to increase understanding of the mineralisation controls and modelling accuracy. The evolution of the modelling process in response to increasing data levels and a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls has resulted in changes to the perception of the orebody size and style. This has caused the choice of underground mining method to be revised several times and the process to final mining method selection to take longer than usual. In order to achieve the planned production start-up date of July 1998 the process has been allowed to progress in parallel with development of the underground mine. This paper describes the resource modelling and mining method selection process applied to the Callie underground mine and some of the issues which have contributed to its evolution. Some conclusions that are relevant to the efficient planning and development of new mining projects in general are presented.

Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

Future climate variability and change will impact on mining operations and their attendant communities. To minimise this impact, early and informed risk management is warranted. However, research into the risks posed by climate to the Australian mining industry has so far been limited. We are conducting a systematic study of the mining life-cycle to identify the main areas of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of operations and communities. This project aims to assess what adaptation activities are currently being undertaken within the mining industry and its communities across Australia and to develop a risk management approach that will aid the adaptation of practices in and around the industry, better assuring the security of people, jobs, revenue and the environment under changed or extreme climate conditions. The Canadian mining industry was recently assessed through a similar study, which found that many mining companies perceive a real risk to mining from climate change in the future, despite few companies being actively involved in managing such risk. At a workshop held by CSIRO involving mining specialists, the most vulnerable stage in the mining process in the Australian context was assessed to be production. In particular, impacts on water and energy supplies and also transport and infrastructure were of high concern. Additionally, heat stress on workers and equipment, changes in groundwater flow and increases in geohazards were also identified as important factors in the short and long term if problematic climate events become more extreme or more frequent. Risks in the planning and post-mine stages were also identified. Based on literature reviews and preliminary discussions with mining experts, here we present an initial assessment of the climate adaptation issues relating to mining and its associated communities and describe our future work plans in this area.

Building and Maintaining Community Relationships   In mining terms, the town of Waihi is distinctive with the Martha mine situated right in the heart of the town. MarthaÆs central location and other mining activity nearby means there is an increased community focus on the happenings at the mine and the effects and impacts of mining. While WaihiÆs proximity to the mine is unique, all mines have a community context that they operate within.   Issues of proximity simply heighten awareness and emphasise the need for building and maintaining good community relationships. In the three years we have been working alongside the Waihi community, we have worked together with concerned and supportive residents, representatives of Newmont Waihi Gold and representatives of Hauraki District Council, to develop a collaborative framework for addressing the economic, social, environmental, cultural and spiritual wellbeing of the people of Waihi. This could not have occurred without the genuine commitment of all participants.   This collaborative focus has resulted in some tangible progress in Waihi which, in part, stems from people taking an interest in the town because the town is taking an interest in itself. As we have worked and learned within the process of building and maintaining a collaborative and sustainable community environment, we have tried to adhere to a philosophy and a set of basic principles. We believe that this approach, combined with a teachable skill set, helped to create the opportunity to develop a truly collaborative community environment which continues to grow. Our paper will describe this philosophy, these principles and the skill set that we have applied.   The application of the process in Waihi has resulted in a series of outcomes unique to Waihi. These outcomes include formation of the Waihi Community Vision committee, the Vision Waihi Trust and the subgroups set up to further the interests of particular groups, for the collective benefit of all the community.   Based on our experience of other situations, and on the way the Waihi process has developed, we believe that the identified principles and skills can be transported and used in other cultures and contexts. While the resultant outcomes may differ, the underlying principles will still apply. Progress will come from creating a sustainable environment within which the community (including residents, industry and regulatory authority) can determine its own internal relationships and the vibrant growing sense it has of itself.

Flotation testing has been done at laboratory scale on hematite mineral and ore samples using stage additions of various hydroxamates. Chemisorption of hydroxamate species onto the hematite surface was inferred from the results, possibly involving both the undissociated hydroxamic acid and hydroxamate ion as maximum recovery occurred close to the pKa of the hydroxamic acid. Flotation testing on a specular hematite ore containing 40 per cent Fe and 42.5 per cent silica gave highest iron grades in concentrate at pH 6, in contrast to published data which suggested pH 9 as the optimum value for ore processing. Using octyl hydroxamate, a rougher concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe at 51 per cent recovery was obtained using four stage additions of 50 g/t at pH 6. For lower grade concentrates still meeting the chemical analysis for pigment grade micaceous hematite (minimum Fe assay 60 per cent) iron recoveries of 80 per cent were possible for stage additions of 50 g/t octyl hydroxamate in the pH range 6-8.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. It is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5 Mt per annum. Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. These data form the basis for forecasting and on-going systems analysis which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions, visual grade estimates and draw point sampling are routinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Draw point recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Statistical variance controls are also employed to analyse mine and plant performance and guide actions.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The cut-off/cut-over grade policy produced caters for multiple processing streams and stockpiles.Finally we demonstrate the quality of the algorithm by comparing some results with a well-known mathematical solution.CITATION:Myburgh, C A, Deb, K and Craig, S, 2014. The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? AustraliaÆs strong position as an aluminium producer and potential magnesium producer combined with rapid market growth in the automotive industry, proximity to Asia and other natural advantages points to considerable opportunity for downstream processing and manufacture with light metals in this country. Development of a vertically integrated light metals industry in Australia needs to be pursued with vigour, as does the continued development of global strategic alliances through the value adding chain.

Technology is playing an increasingly large role in the operations of our mines. There is a temptation to regard the implementation of technological systems as the objective itself when, in reality, systems are used to support a business process. Only when the process succeeds will the systems be seen to succeed. Understanding the distinction between system and process is critical. This understanding, together with the resultant holistic approach, is considered to be critical to successful implementation and operation of Mine Control process. This paper examines the critical factors essential to success in establishing and sustaining a Mine Control process that maximises benefits to an operation. These factors have been developed during the author's experience of nearly 30 years in Mine Control projects across over 50 sites. Each factor is discussed in relation to real world examples at well-known mines.

The modern resource extraction enterprise is a complex capital intensive business operating in a world of constantly evolving social, environmental and economic scrutiny. Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

The prediction of how waste materials will evolve geochemically within waste storage facilities has been the subject of hundreds of thousands of hours researched by geoscientists globally. Despite the quantity of research there are a number of significant areas of uncertainty that remain as partially resolved issues. One of the most significant issues is the applicability of scaling laboratory test results to field conditions, and the use of laboratory data for predictive calculations to determine geochemical evolution of waste materials in the field. This issue has arisen predominantly as a result of the relative paucity of field monitoring data from waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs) and the fact that laboratory test methods are not typically linked to specific field conditions; rather they are based on generic standardised methods and designed primarily to simulate accelerated weathering conditions that do not relate to field conditions in a linear manner.To address these specific issues the authors have in the last two years made significant progress in the development and deployment of advanced field monitoring equipment within numerous WRSFs. O’Kane Consultants (OKC) has previously reported the findings from data collected from these monitoring installations in a number of papers presented throughout 2013–2014. This valuable site data has subsequently been used by OKC as the basis to design and engineer advanced customisable site-specific kinetic leach columns at OKC’s geochemistry research laboratory. These columns represent an important advancement in kinetic column assessment methodology as they have been designed to replicate the field internal conditions within waste facilities.Key features of the columns include their capacity, size and technical specifications; including fully programmable solenoid-controlled air supply with variable flow and pressure control and in-line heating option, automated temperature control and monitoring, automated oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production monitoring, and soil moisture/matric suction monitoring.This flexibility of the design not only allows for more accurate field-based assessment of pyrite oxidation rates (POR) but also assessment of the potential effectiveness of waste management options such as deposition within a reduced oxygen environment, for example, as simulations of reduced net percolation rates or oxygen ingress rates can be accommodated.CITATION:Pearce, S, Pearce, J and Barteaux, M, 2015. SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.
