Laboratory testwork was carried out on an overall orebody composite, of 2.9 per cent Cu and 4.2 per cent Zn, prepared from drill core taken from the Currawong fine-grained, copper-zinc massive sulphide deposit near Benambra in Victoria. While 90 per cent of the copper was readily recovered in a concentrate of 20 per cent Cu, after grinding to 95 per cent passing 38 microns, zinc responded poorly to conventional flowsheet/reagent regimes. Experience elsewhere with the use of reverse cleaning, to separate pyrite from sphalerite, led to a series of tests in which better (but still modest)metallurgical results were obtained. The best result was a zinc recovery of 55 per cent in a concentrate of 50.5 per cent Zn. The major loss of zinc occurred in the reverse cleaning stage where the unit recovery of zinc was similar to pilot plant results achieved at Mount Isa Mines on similar feedstock. Diagnostic mineralogy suggested that an overall zinc recovery of 70 per cent was probably the practical upper limit, at a 50 per cent Zn grade.

Within CRLÆs lifetime there have been a number of products that have proceeded through their life cycles. In each case market forces and technological advances have forced the cessation of the product. The company has then had to develop alternative outlets for its copper. Sometimes it has produced a similar product to fill the same market. In other cases the extra copper is sold as cathode. Today, CRL produces no semi-fabricated copper products and all cathode is sold. More recently, CRL has ventured into the sale of technology and manufacture of cathode motherplates. This area, whilst it is not what had been a traditional area of core business, has been found to be profitable.

The recent (2005) amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 have made it clear that there is no obligation on an applicant to consult. However the importance and value in consulting with the community, particularly before commencing a major project, cannot be understated.   This paper looks at the provisions of the Resource Management Act as they relate to consultation and public participation in the process, and will discuss the benefits of consultation both before an application is filed and following the filing of the application. Engaging with the local community can help shape a project to better fit the community, engender support and address opposition. In short, taking the extra step to what is legally required, can help smooth what is potentially a bumpy road. Examples in practice of the value of consultation are given.

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. A key issue facing mine managers in remote locations in Australia and overseas is that of managing a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workforce. Current Australian research (Sibbel, in prep) indicates that FIFO employees and their families do not differ from the general population in terms of their overall mental health and the well-being of their family relationships. However, they do face unique issues/pressures associated with the lifestyle, the impacts of which are dependent on the policies and practices of the company as well as individual coping and support mechanisms. Successful management of a FIFO site and its employees therefore requires specialist knowledge and skills beyond those of a solely residential operation. The well-being of the FIFO workforce depends on both site and individual employee characteristics, and has implications for productivity and turnover, as well as safety and health. In addition, although FIFO separates individuals and their families in time and space, the interaction between work and home must be acknowledged and taken into account. Drawing on findings from recent Australian and international FIFO research (eg Annear, Poot and Kingston, 2006; Beach, Brereton and Cliff, 2003; Brereton et al, 2006; Gallegos, 2006; Keown, 2005; Parkes, Carnell and Farmer, 2005; Sibbel, 2001, 2004, in prep; Shrimpton and Storey, 1996; Storey, 2001; Watts, 2004) this paper discusses key understandings of both the positive and negative impacts of FIFO employment on employees and their families, and provides practical management strategies as an aid to the development of best practice. Individual impacts including fatigue and loneliness, as well as family issues such as communication, continually changing roles and responsibilities and the impacts of regular parent absence are key areas which can be ameliorated by appropriate management understanding and action. A flexible framework approach is presented that is suitable for a diversity of operations, including principal and contractor workforces of different sized operations.

Amorphous silica deposits have been identified at Tikitere and Taheke near Rotorua. Two areas at Tikitere have been surface sampled and drilled to establish a resource of amorphous silica in excess of one million tonnes. A pilot plant was established to develop a process to manufacture a high quality super pozzolanic material. This development process took two years before a commercial product was introduced to the construction industry in 1996. The amorphous silica product, marketed as Microsilica 600, is used as a pozzolanic material to produce high quality strong and durable concrete, sprayed tunnel linings, mortars and grouts. Microsilica 600 has been used locally and exported to 11 countries.

Use of Impact Crushing for the Enrichment of Low-Grade Colemanite Concentrates This paper presents the results of an investigation into the enrichment of -25+3 mm low grade colemanite concentrates exploiting differential breakage properties of various minerals associated within the ore sample. Boric acid production process requires concentrates containing at least 42 per cent B2O3, hence concentrates below this grade either stock piled or further treated to increase B2O3 content. The low grade concentrate is obtained as a by-product of Emet Colemanite Concentrator and the B2O3 content may vary around 37 - 38 per cent. The sample used in the experimental studies assays 37.52 per cent B2O3. In the experimental procedures the sample was crushed using a laboratory size horizontal shaft impact crusher and the products were classified into different size fractions by screening so that any improvement by size could be observed. In the tests the effects of parameters such as the revolution speed of the crusher and heat treatment was checked. Test results prove that boron contents show a tendency to increase as the particle size decreases. As a result of the experimental studies a colemanite concentrate assaying 42.13 per cent B2O3 is produced with 76.55  per cent recovery. Arsenic content is seen to change inversely proportional with the B2O3 content of the concentrate such that it drops from 1016 ppm from the as received sample to 676 ppm in the concentrate.

This article presents a proposal for the rehabilitation of the mined area of the Mogiana quarry. The Mogiana quarry produces material used in civil construction and is situated in the Brazilian State of Spo Paulo in the kilometre six of the Mogf Mirim - Itapira highway. The mineral exploitation in the Mogiana quarry provokes modifications in the environment such as alterations in the relief, vegetation, quality of the air, water and landscape. Through previous study of the area it was verified that after the closure of the exploitation the mine should be occupied mainly by pasturage. At the closing of the mine the exploitation benches, berms and slopes in general as well as the surrounding areas should be covered with a layer of soil and vegetated with native species in order to mitigate the negative impacts caused by the mine. The rehabilitation project of the area is based on the probable future use of the area, located between agricultural cultivations and cattle creation. The great alteration of the relief and soil would make future use of the area for agriculture difficult. It is more suitable t0 animal creation, mainly cattle. The high and thick rock slopes originated by the mining should be covered by vegetation, where possible, to reduce the negative visual impact. Obviously several measures will be necessary to reduce the impacts on the environment during mining. The final and definitive reclamation will only be possible after abandonment of the area. The main aspects of this reclamation process will be discussed in this paper.

Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

The energy supply in the 21st century is still secured by coal. According to estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal will have the same importance as oil for the world-wide supply of energy until 2030. Coal is also an important element of EU policy, its future use is closely linked to effectively addressing the environmental challenges it poses. Hard and brown coal represent approximately 80 per cent of European Union (EU) reserves of fossil fuels and coal utilisation can co-exist with the development of power generation based on renewables. Europe is the world's third largest consumer of coal behind China and the United States.The Czech Republic is poor in energy resources except for coal. Brown coal is relatively abundant (mineable reserves estimated at 1800 Mt, output 48 Mt/a) and significant quantities of hard coal (mineable reserves 900 Mt, 13 Mt/a), much of it suitable for coke production, are also present.Severoceske Doly (SD Company), the biggest Czech coal mining company (22 Mt/a, 48.6 per cent Czech market share) and one of the biggest in Europe, reinforces despite the last deep crisis in the Czech and European economies its long-standing stable and strong market and financial position. From 2009, the SD Company co-owns, with partners, a brown-coal mining company MIBRAG (21 Mt/a). SD Company invests in large mining equipment (eg new giant spreaders and bucket-wheel excavators, extension of overland belt conveyors), rebuilds and upgrades mining and processing installations, auxiliary and other machinery. We should see the investment we make today in tomorrow's mining and reclamation as an opportunity and not as a burden. They enable to make our position more resistant in the longer term. Projects focused on the environment and operational safety went hand in hand with these efforts.R&D activities relate to technical innovations, improvements of mining equipment, research and evaluation of conditions for extracting coal seam and/or overburden and mitigation of environmental impacts, utilisation of coal in new products. The company spends considerable amounts on reclaiming affected land and creating a new post-mining landscape.Our dialogue with influential stakeholders in the region where we operate contributes to the long-term improvement in the quality of life of local residents. Such dialogue with communities in the last ten years has been instrumental for confidence building. SD Company helps to develop many projects of towns and villages in its vicinity. The stable and transparent relations with our neighbours are in accordance with our basic principles of corporate social responsibility.

The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmentallegislation has received increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. There is thus the need to increase the base of knowledge on the existing practices of spoil dump design and rehabilitation. Efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of spoil dump reshaping techniques for mine rehabilitation assists in maintaining the expected standards of environmental compliance. As part of the overall approach for effective engineering design ofspoil dumps, a comprehensive, computational and efficient tool isrequired for assessing the economics and productivity of existing spoil dump reshaping practices for efficient mine rehabilitation. Such a design tool is useful in linking current spoil dump environmental management practices with engineering design planning and economic impact evaluation. This paper identifies the processes for the economic impact evaluation for existing spoil dump reshaping practices and proposed final site dump designs. Selection of an efficient spoil dump design at optimum costs will ensure operational efficiency. A case study is presented identifying economic impact evaluation in earthmoving equipment selection and the costs involved for the reshaping of spoil dumps to that of varying final site designs.

For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

Advances in technology have led to larger and deeper open pit mines and, consequently, also increased the potential economic impact associated with slope failures. If the ultimate aim of mining operations is to maximise project profit, it is surprising to see related research activities have mostly been focusing on technical areas such as slope stability modelling, but with limited studies conducted to date to assess the relationship between geotechnical uncertainties and economic risk. Given most major decisions in the mining industry nowadays are made by management staff with financial background, any design approach that would help to link slope stability analysis results with monetary values would no doubt enhance communication between geotechnical practitioners and decision makers. This paper presents a study which assesses economic impact of slope failures to assist in mine planning. The study also estimates the impact of slope failures on project value, which would enable economic risks associated with pit slope designs to be closely examined. The proposed risk assessment techniques, used by financial institutions for many years to assess portfolio risks, can assist geotechnical practitioners in quantifying risks of slope failures. Risk-adjusted concepts are also suggested to assist management in selecting a slope design with optimal risk and return ratio.

The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation.
