Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

Reasons are given for the seemingly excessive public concern with taxation of the mineral industry. Optimality of mineral extraction is a concept that requires careful definition in terms of one or more objectives. Once defined, the impact of taxation upon optimal mineral extraction may be studied; findings from earlier work on this topic are presented for two basically different cases. In conclusion it is observed that the pursuit of optimality requires the availability of highly skilled engineers; in the event of a large-scale mineral development it is this resource that is probably scarcest of all.

Particle Mechanics and the Design of Cyclone Tribochargers Triboelectric separation is a dry electrostatic technique that has shown promise in several particle processing applications. A tribocharger uses contact or friction to differentially charge particles of different materials, which are then separated by an electric field. The initial tribocharging process is poorly understood, with tribocharger design and operation largely a matter of trial and error. A better physical understanding of tribocharger operation would therefore be of immense value in the optimisation of triboelectric separation processes. A combination of charge measurements, trajectory modelling and high-speed video has been used to relate charging to particle mechanics in a cylindrical pneumatic cyclone, one of the most effective tribochargers for mineral separation applications, and the preliminary results are presented here. The consequences of these observations for cyclone tribocharger design and operation, and for tribocharger design in general, are discussed.

Kapowai Caldera Complex (KCC), located 10 km west of Tairua (eastern Coromandel Peninsula), is a late Miocene composite collapse caldera, formed during eruption of several small and large volume andesitic rhyolitic ignimbrites. Numerous epithermal Au-Ag mineral deposits and associated alteration zones at the KCC are related to caldera (rhyolite lava domes, intracaldera faults) or regional structures (faults). The main epithermal deposit exposed in the central KCC is associated with an E-W striking structural boundary fault that cuts the Welcome Jack rhyolite dome. Propylitic (calcite - chlorite) and sericitic (quartz - sericite) alteration haloes surround this deposit. Sporadic zones of sericitic alteration are also exposed within and on the margins of the Bulls Run rhyolite dome complex. Epithermal systems post-dated emplacement of these rhyolite domes, but were controlled by them. Propylitic alteration of ignimbrite in the floor of the Kapowai and Kauaeranga valleys is related to the major NE-trending Kapowai Fault which extends SW to south of Thames. Alteration along this fault pre-dates alteration associated with the rhyolite lava domes. Numerous sericitic and propylitic altered welded ignimbrite, rhyolite and andesite lava lithic fragments have been sampled from intracaldera ignimbrites, and although no direct source is known, they infer the presence of buried epithermal systems. Repeated epithermal activity at the KCC is inferred by the exposed epithermal deposits/alteration zones and the older buried geothermal systems. Silicic caldera volcanoes are considered to be critical volcanic environments for epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation in Coromandel, but are highly variable and need detailed stratigraphic, structural, petrologic, and geophysical studies to characterise them.

The traditional measure of Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) as a measure of improvement in safety performance is recognised as inadequate and misleading, lulling managers into believing that safety is improving. It is a reactive measure, and steadily declining LTIFRs around the world have failed to be accompanied by a similar reduction in the fatality rate. This paper confronts the industry with the attitudes of some mining managers, such as one that allowed fatalities to occur in the case of a gold mining company at a rate of one death per 150 000 ounces of gold produced while claiming their safety record has improved, as shown by a falling LTIFR, and viewing fatality reductions as a long-term goal instead of an immediate priority. A quantum shift in management attitudes is required to focus on proactive measurements to detect the indicators of an impending disaster, and to predict conditions conducive to fatalities. Corporate CEOs are challenged to attend the funerals of all workers killed in the workplace. CEOs who fail to attend such funerals send a message to employees that the CEOÆs priorities lie elsewhere, and that profits take priority over workersÆ lives. The dichotomy of whether mining companies are run for the benefit of shareholders or whether companies owe social responsibility to the community is examined. The role of individual responsibility for personal safety is examined, together with the psychology of employees in the mining industry. A number of proactive measurable indicators are suggested to stimulate discussion on developing robust measuring tools to predict and therefore prevent fatalities.

Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

Geotechnical conditions in the Lochiel Deposit are somewhat unusual, and thus geotechnical and hydrological investigations have assumed a high priority. The cost of mining the deposit has been shown to be very sensitive to geotechnical design parameters, and it is now seen to be of paramount importance to establish a high level of confidence in the design parameters used for mining cost estimation. Geotechnical investigations in the Lochiel Deposit reached a crossroads in 1985, when there appeared to be several quite different and equally attractive routes to follow to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in geotechnical mine design parameters. Three main options were identified, referred to as the No Further Work Route, the Drill and Trench Route, and the Trial Pit Route. The No Further Work Route was ruled out as being technically unsound and as satisfying none of the Electricity Trust of South Australia's (ETSA's) or the State Government's requirements. During a mineral exploration program in an environmentally sensitive area nearMount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling program was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within 12 months of completion of work.
