In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

This paper presents a study about reopening of a quarry near to the geothermal region of Kntahya, Turkey. The production method was gallery blasting which resulted in very high ground vibrations. Therefore the quarry had been closed down by the local authorities about 12 years ago due to possible damages to the geothermal resources. In order to reopen the quarry, reserve estimation and production planning studies needs to be carried out as well as applying environmentally sensitive production method. The result of reserve estimation studies showed approximately 12.5 Mt reserve in the area. The market studies indicated that annual production of 600 000 tonnes could be sold. These results justify to reopen the quarry. In order to overcome environmental problems, bench blasting production method instead of gallery blasting has been planned. This method enables to design a drilling blasting pattern that will almost result in no ground vibrations.

Sphalerites from Devonian cassiterite-sulphide deposits and Pb-Zn-Ag fissure veins have similar ranges of Cd contents, but the average Cd and Fe contents could indicate a small initial difference in availability of Cd between the Zeehan-Renison Bell district and the Mt. Bischoff-Waratah district. Sphalerites from banded Pb-Zn deposits (Rosebery and Hercules) are characterized by low Cd content which is a world-wide feature of such deposits in exIrusive rocks, and may indicaIe a genetic relationship between ore deposition and vulcanism.

The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. Successful development of coal seam gas (CSG) resources in low-rank coalfields such as the Powder River Basin has raised interest in CSG from low rank coal in New Zealand. Kenham Holdings Limited holds 12 Petroleum Exploration Permits (PEP) covering some of New ZealandÆs low-rank coal and lignite resources and has engaged CRL Energy Limited to assist in the systematic evaluation of the CSG potential of the permits. To date, exploration results from seven New Zealand coalfields reflect differences in coal type, rank, depositional environment and depth of burial between coalfields. Several of the explored coalfields are considered prospective for CSG. One of the most advanced Kenham exploration programmes is in the Hawkdun Coalfield, Central Otago.   The Hawkdun Coalfield contains a single, thick lignite seam with properties that are similar to the Powder River Basin. Preliminary results indicate the Hawkdun Coalfield is prospective for CSG with the potential to contain between 25 and 60 PJ of gas; enough to supply a 30MW power station for ten to 25 years. Further drilling is planned to investigate the economic viability of the Hawkdun Coalfield. The in situ permeability of the lignite, the amount and availability of free gas, gas saturation at depth and market opportunities will determine its economic viability. If initial pumping and production results in the planned exploration programme are promising, the Hawkdun Coalfield will be further developed with additional production drillholes to form a trial production pod.

Traditionally, the gravity cleaning of coal has been evaluated in pilot plant tests. Attention is now turning to the development of empirical models of gravity cleaning equipment that can be used for the design and evaluation of circuits. This paper presents some preliminary information for spirals and water-only cyclones treating fine coals. Also discussed is how such information gives a better understanding of the operating and performance characteristics of this equipment, how realistic comparisons can be made between different types of equipment, and how small mobile plants could be designed for treating the fine coals 'stockpiled' at many NZ mines.

Variographic analysis, a classical tool from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), can address practical situations with multiple variables; however, its application has very often been limited to one variable at a time. Recent developments have shown the benefits of using multivariate approaches for variographic characterisation of a set of variables instead of considering individual variables sequentially. Among these approaches, the multivariogram has been revealed itself to be a powerful tool when the overall time-variability of a process must be summarised in terms of a large set of properties (variables) to assess its true global variability. However, even when choosing the properties of interest carefully, the resulting global variance obtained with this approach may be very high. In particular, some variables that contribute to a major proportion of the global (multivariate) variability could be less important for the process performance than others having a lower variability. To address this issue, a new approach is proposed, combining the multivariogram with process modelling and multivariate data analysis methods such as partial least squares (PLS) regression from chemometrics. An example from the mineral processing industry is presented, for which the process performance could be linked to key process variables (sensor data) using the PLS regression. Once introduced in the multivariogram equation, PLS model parameters (loading-weights or regression coefficients) can be used to weigh the variables according to their relevance for the process. In addition, this also permits characterisation of process performance variability with time using only the process input variables and a weighted metric according to the PLS regression model. Ultimately, this method helps to find an optimised sampling procedure in terms of frequency, sampling mode and number of increments according to the actual overall process performance. Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

The design of excavations in high displacement mining environments requires consideration of both the load and displacement capacity of the ground reinforcement and support systems. This paper is a case study on the design of point anchored rebar bolts using laboratory tests and field trials at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. A laboratory testing program was carried out to measure the mechanical properties of the Strata Control Systems R27 Secura resin bolt which is currently being installed on the extraction and undercut level at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. The aim was to quantify elastic, plastic and energy parameters for various bolt, mesh and plate systems. Experiments were performed on bar segments, bolt/plate systems, and bolt/plate/mesh/resin systems. The mechanical properties were calculated from tensile tests with a 500 kN Avery machine. Load-displacement data was collected from four different testing configurations. The laboratory results are compared with underground measurements and observations of bolt performance.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life.
