Arthur Launcelot Collins was born at Truro in Cornmall, England, July 8, 1868. His father, J. H. Collins, is well kuown as an engineer, and his books have been widely read in this country: Arthur was the third son. Three of his brothers are engaged, as is his father, in the profession of mining engineering. His education, gained partly at St. Austell, partly at Falmouth, and partly at Nuttall's Collegiate School in Truro, England, was supervised by his father, who was then Lecturer on the Mining Sciences to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. In 1881, J. H. Collins went to Rio Tinto, in Spain, as chief chemist and metallurgist, and it was there that Arthur began his practical work in the laboratory and continued his studies in chenlistry and mineralogy. To the latter science he was deeply attached; and he never lost an opportunity of adding to his cabinet of minerals, of which he was an ardent collector. In 1883, he became assayer and general assistant to Mr. Nicol, Manager of the Peña del Hierro copper-mines, ncar Rio Tinto. The lodes of Cripple Creek, Colo., partake of the composition of the geological formation which they traverse. The prevailing rocks are andesitic breccia, lying upon granite, and also bodies of phonolite, trachytic phonolite, nepheline-basalt, etc., penetrating both the granite and the breccia. At Kalgoorlie, in West Australia, the prevailing rock is schistose, and has not been certainly identified, though microscopic sections indicate the probability that it was originally an acid eruptive. The lodes are essentially bands, more highly schistose than the encasing rock, and impregnated to a notable degree with disseminated pyrites and secondary calcite. During 1899 Cripple Creek produced 425,590 tons of ore, having a gross value of $15,658,254; during the same period the output of Kalgoorlie was 467,048 tons, valued at $17,724,587. In chemical composition, the ores at Cripple Creek and Kalgoorlie, respectively, present differences equally interesting to the petrographer and the metallurgist. In both cases we have to deal with altered eruptives as the matrix of the ore; but the much older rock of Kalgoorlie has undergone more decompo-

MUCH attention has been directed to the effects of grain size upon the properties of alloys, but there has been scant study either of the conditions that determine the pattern and dimensions of den-drites in metal systems, or of the influence of their shape and size upon the overall properties of cast-ings. The aim of the research that is about to be described has been to investigate the effect of vari-ous factors upon the mode of formation of dendrites in alloys by measurements of the distance between adjacent dendrite arms (dendrite spacing). Early investigators, including Grignonl and Tschernoff,2 showed that a metal dendrite is com-posed of a tree-like system of stalks and branches arranged in a simple geometrical pattern. North-cott and Thomas3 demonstrated that, in the face-centered cubic solid solutions of copper-base, these stalks and side arms all lie in (100) directions in the crystal. Several investigators, including Sauveur and Chou,0 Sauveur and Reed,' and Martin and Mar-tina have reported that the addition to steel of alloy-ing elements, such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, not only makes the dendrites easier to reveal by etching, but makes them coarser. The latter authors8 proposed that the coarsening of the dendrites is roughly proportional to the increase in the temperature range of freezing, caused by adding the alloying elements. Sauveur and Chou6 showed, in addition, that the dendrites are coarsened by a decreased rate of cooling of the casting. Measurement of Dendrite Arm Spacing Among the physical conditions that could be ex-pected to have an influence upon the dendrite arm spacing, that appears in a cast metal, are: composi-tion, rate of freezing, crystal structure, and type of constitution. The relationships obtaining between these variables and the dendrite dimensions have been examined, in the present research, by measur- ing the arm spacing in a wide variety of alloys, listed in tables II through VI. Alloy compositions are recorded in the tables by showing the symbol of the major metal followed by the percentage and symbol of the alloying agent; thus, "Al-10Ag" is an aluminum-base alloy containing 10 pct of silver. Although none of the alloys were analyzed, an im-pression of their degree of purity may be obtained from that of their component metals given in table I. Five hundred grams of each alloy was made by melting in small clay-graphite crucibles in an elec-tric muffle furnace. After alloying the temperature was adjusted to 50" to 75°C above the liquidus and the melts were poured into cast iron molds, at room temperature, the molds having a wall thickness of 1 in. and a cavity 11/2 in. sq in cross-section. Each ingot, thus cast, was sectioned at mid-height and the sectioned surface was polished and etched for metallographic examination. Dendrite spacing meas-urements were made at three positions, namely, ad-jacent to the mold wall, midway between the wall and the center of the ingot, and at the center (desig-nated e, m, and c respectively, in the tables). A typical series of microstructures is presented in fig. 1. For each measurement, the average was taken of the dendrite spacing of several grains covering a zone about 2 mm wide. Only those grains which had a major dendrite axis nearly in the plane of polish were selected in order to eliminate corrections for orientation differences from grain to grain. Although the dendrite spacings were measured to the nearest thousandth of a millimeter, the values listed in the tables are thought to be significant only to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter. The larg-est difference in readings found, when various ob-servers rated the same specimens, was 0.012 mm; the largest difference between corresponding meas-urements upon duplicate specimens was 0.027 mm.

The a and y solubility limits in the Fe-Ni phase diagram have been redetermined at temperatures above 500°C. Both a diffusion-couple and a quench and anneal technique were used. The solubility limits were measured with an electron-probe micro-analyzer. The nickel concentration at the phase boundary is increased below 700°C and the a solid-solubility range is much larger than had been previously measured. The solubility limits are also extrapolated to 300°C. It is suggested that the solubility of nickel in a FeNi reaches a maximum in the temperature interval 400o to 500°C. THE equilibrium diagram has been of great use in the field of meteoritics, where the phase relations between kamacite (a) and taenite (?) in metallic meteorites can be described by means of the Fe-Ni diagram. The study of metallic meteorites by electron-probe microanalysis has cast some doubt on the accuracy of the presently available Fe-Ni diagrams.1, 2 Recent thermodynamic studies of the Fe-Ni system also suggest that the diagram may be in error.3 For these reasons the high-temperature (800o to 500°C) part of the diagram was redetermined. INTRODUCTION The currently accepted Fe-Ni diagram is that of Owen and Liu.4 Above 910°C, there is a region of complete solid solubility, ? (fee). Below 910°C, the a (bee) phase is stable in pure iron. The effect of increasing amounts of nickel is to stabilize the y phase. The phases that form when Fe-Ni alloys are heated or cooled bear little relation to the equilibrium diagram. If an alloy is cooled from the y state and held at a temperature within the a + y field, no evidence has been found for the occurrence of the y - a transformation.5 If the alloy is cooled to low enough temperatures the y phase breaks down into a supersaturated bee phase called a2. In fact, in alloys over 27 pet Ni the y phase is retained at room temperature.6 The a, phase has the same composition as the original y. The temperature at which a2 forms, the M, temperature, has been determined experimentally.' A state of equilibrium can be approached by cooling below M, to form a2 and then reheating the alloy into the two-phase region of the diagram. The y phase will then begin to precipitate out of the a2 phase and grow. The growth of the phase, however, is quite slow. Using the interdiffusion coefficients -Da of Goldstein et al.,8 it is estimated that it takes about 1 year to grow a 10-µ-wide region of ? at 700°C in a 5 pet Ni alloy. Owen and Liu4 used the technique just described to form the equilibrium phases. The phases present were determined by means of X-ray analysis. The accuracy of their diagram depends on the number of alloys available near the phase boundary at a given temperature. In this study two different techniques were used to determine the a/a + ? and ?/a + ? solubility limits. The inherent accuracy of both techniques was greatly improved over that used by previous investigators because the phase-boundary compositions were measured with an electron-probe microanalyzer. PROCEDURE The two methods used to determine the Fe-Ni diagram are the diffusion couple (D.C.) and the quench-and-anneal (Q.+A.) techniques. In the first method, diffusion couples whose diffusion path goes through a two-phase region of the phase diagram were used. A description of the technique used for making the diffusion couples has been described in a previous paper.' After the diffusion treatment a discontinuity in the resultant concentration vs distance profile was measured. The nickel concentrations in the a and ? phases at the interface of the discontinuity are the solubility limits of the a and ? phases in the phase diagram at the diffusion temperature. The constitutional diagram has been determined in part for the sgstem Gd-Fe. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found at compositions corresponding to the following Gd-Fe ratios; 2:3, 1.2, 1:3, 2:7, 1:4, 1:5, and 2:17. The GdFe, com-pound has a congruent melting point above 18000C, whereas all of the remaining compounds melt incongruently, A eutectic exists at 13 wt pct Fe at a temperature of 860°C. ALTHOUGH an increasing amount of information is becoming available on the metallurgy of pure rare earth metals, relatively few studies have been made on alloy systems of the rare earths with the transition metals; iron, nickel, and cobalt. Even less data are extant on gadolinium alloys although it could be expected that such alloys might possess interesting structural and magnetic properties. In this paper, we report investigation of the gadolinium-iron alloy system. Studies on systems containing nickel and cobalt will be presented in subsequent papers. Previous data on gadolinium-iron compounds have been reported by Endter and Klemm1 and Jep-son and Duwez.2 Both reports agree on the existence of the GdFe2 phase, which crystallizes with the C-15type structure (face-centered cubic). This is in accord with results of the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The gadolinium metal used was prepared by met-allothermic reduction of high purity gadolinium fluoride. A typical analysis of the metal thus produced indicated the principal impurities to be oxygen, 0.24 pct, and tantalum, 0.2 pct. The iron metal used for alloying was a reagent grade material. Alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of the respective metals. Appropriate quantities of the two component metals were carefully weighed, blended and compacted. The compacts were then melted in an arc furnace consisting of a water-cooled copper hearth plate and a water-cooled tungsten-tipped counter electrode contained in a brass vacuum chamber. The furnace was evacuated to an absolute pressure of less than 1 with the leak rate established as being less than 20 per min. The furnace was then back-filled to a pressure of 25 mm of Hg, with a 75 pct He-25 pct Ar mixture. Arc melting at 25 v and 300 amp was maintained for about 30 to 60 sec until the entire visible area of the sample became molten, by which time surface tension had drawn the molten metal pool into a large bead. After allowing the furnace to cool, the alloy button was inverted and the melting process repeated. A series of melts was made covering entire composition ranges from 100 pct Gd to 100 pct Fe. All samples were examined metallographically in the as-melted condition. As the phase diagram became rationalized, and differential thermal analysis had given indications of temperature arrests, annealing was carried out in vacuo or in argon. Generally, compositions containing more than about 60 pct Gd were heat treated at 750°C and alloys containing less than this quantity of gadolinium were annealed at 1000°C. Prolonged annealing times were of the order of 100 to 200 hr. Metallographic examination was repeated on the annealed materials. Although little material loss was noted during alloy preparation, chemical analyses were made on all specimens prepared. The following standard, analytical techniques were used. Samples were dissolved in hydrochloric acid; insoluble material was filtered off, ignited and fused with potassium pyro-sulfate. The cold melt was leached with dilute acid and the solution thus obtained added to the main sample solution. Gadolinium was always determined gravimetri-callv as oxide from oxalate ignition. Iron was removed from an aliquot sample by electrolysis on a mercury cathode at approximately six volts. Gadolinium in the iron-free electrolyte was then precipitated as oxalate which was subsequently ignited to oxide. Recent experimental data on the methane-n-butane-water system have been combined with data in literature to present: (I) the water-vapor content of natural gases, (2) the solubility of water in hydrocarbon liquids, and (3) the solubility of natural gases in water. Since water is present in petroleum reservoirs, experimental data regarding the behavior of water in hydrocarbon-water systems is of increasing engineering importance. A survey of literature (Table I) shows that data of these types are fragmen-tary at temperatures above the hydrate region. Experimental data taken from the authors' recent investigation of the meth-ape-n-butane-water system are presented.17

Wabush Mines is the largest single supplier of iron ore to the Canadian steel industry, with 42% of its 6 million tpy of iron ore production going to the company's two Canadian owners-The Steel Co. of Canada and Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. Six other companies hold interests in Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. These are Lykes-Youngstown, Inland Steel Co., Intrerlake Steel Corp., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co., Finsider of Italy and Pickands Mather & Co. Field work on Wabush began in mid-1957 when a long-range program of economic, geologic, and metallurgical investigations started. This work was followed in 1959 by the construction of a temporary camp and a 700-tpd pilot plant. At the same time, work was also started on a 38-mi railway connection to Ross Bay, Newfoundland.

THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl. Oil was discovered at Rangeley in 1901, and the field supports a small local refinery at the present time. THE purpose of this paper is to present to the profession data and experience obtained over a period of 5 years in the operation of 87 shaker-conveyor units, and the production of 2,169,638 tons of run-of-mine anthracite coal. The data are not generally available and should be of interest to those concerned with the operation of anthracite and bitu-minous mines. To simplify comparison, a ton of 2000 lb. of raw run-of-mine coal has been used as the production unit throughout this paper.

ThE equilibrium phase diagram of the Mo-Cr system, described by anssen,' indicates that chromium and molybdenum form a continuous series of solid solutions above 1673K. The liquidus and solidus have been reported to have a minimum at about 12 at. pct Mo and 2133°K by Bloom and Grant2 and by Putnam, Potter, and Grant.3 X-ray studies by Trzebiatowski and ploszek4 and Baen and Duwez' revealed no indication of solid solution decomposition after long anneals at 1473", 1273", 923", and 873°K. However, Bloom and rant' by means of cooling and heating curve analysis of alloys containing up to 45 at. pct Mo found thermal effects at temperatures approximately 100" * 30°K below the liquidus. The only previous thermodynamic study of the Cr-Mo alloy system was made by Laffitte and Kuba-schewski6 who used the Knudsen effusion method at 1471°K. These investigators reported the possibility of a miscibility gap because they observed positive deviations from ideality in their chemical activity

THE Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people.1 Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties.
