It was recently reported' that the initial transformation in (100) iron whiskers grown in the bcc condition can be nucleated on heating in regions of the whisker which are not necessarily the hottest. Although this behavior was observed1 several times, its sporadic nature precluded any documentation other than occasional visual observations during hot-stage optical-microscope heating experiments. The purpose of this communication is to report how, in one instance, the a-y transformation in such a (100) iron whisker was initiated in a region which was clearly at a lower temperature than an adjacent region which did not transform at all.

Friends often ask how accurate the work of our little stamp mill is, or express the opinion that a little mill cannot do good work. As a reply we would like to place on record the results of a few tests. There are two periods of work in our laboratory; the fall term, when the class collectively goes through all our chief laboratory-processes, and the spring term, when the students work up their theses, each electing some one process or investigation and devoting himself wholly, or almost wholly, to that. Some of the tests, the results of which are recorded in this paper, were made in the fall term; the preparation of the apparatus, the sampling and the assaying being done largely by assistants, with the aid of the students. IN 1949 Lehigh Navigation Coal began a study to improve its mining methods. At this time the company mines were using conventional breast and pillar and slant chute methods to mine the. steeply pitching coal (40º to 90º). Mining costs were high, the miners' productivity low. There were many hazards typical of the methods employed. Coal seams in the Panther Creek Valley area of the southern anthracite field form a syncline dipping 40" to the south and 75º to 80º to the north, the lowest point 1500 ft from surface. Several contiguous veins 7 to 50 ft thick are mined. Characteristic folding is shown in Fig. 1.

BISMUTH can be readily grown into single-crystal form using the so-called "quick freeze" growth method.' Some advantages of this method are that very large crystals can be grown in a relatively short time, and with comparatively simple apparatus. The first large scale application of radio remote control equipment to standard gage railroad trains has been achieved at the Morenci mine of Phelps Dodge Corp. at Morenci, Ariz. Twenty or more ore and waste haulage trains are remote control operated at any one time, each with a one-man crew. Reduction of train crews from two men to one man has materially lowered the total cost of train operation. Elimination of brakemen has also resulted in an improvement in train efficiency brought about by a shortening of train haulage cycle times.

THIS paper describes some properties of steels in the composition range 0.10 to 0.30 per cent carbon and 1 to 7 per cent chromium. It is well known that some steels of this type develop high tensile strengths upon receiving comparatively simple heat treatments, such as ordinary air cooling from appropriate temperatures, with "or without subsequent tempering treatments. These high strengths are frequently associated with unusual toughness as measured by the Izod or Charpy impact test. The chromium content, in addition to imparting the above properties, enhances the resistance to corrosion and improves the strength and oxida-tion resistance at elevated temperatures. Moreover, these steels have good forging and fabricating properties, as evidenced by the fact that several thousand tons of seamless tubing have been made during the past five years from steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and 5 per cent chromium.

RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

Desulfurization of limestone during and subsequent to calcination has been investigated using U.S. Steel's Rogers City quarry-Michigan limestone cut to 25-30-mm diam spheroidal shapes. The experimental observations indicated that the sulfur present as iron pyrite in commercial limestone is oxidized partly to SO, during calcination and partly converted to sulfides (FeS, CaS) and CaSO4. If calcination is carried out under oxidizing conditions, most of the sulfur is converted to CaSO4, which can be removed from burnt lime readily in CO,-CO mixtures, the higher the CO content the faster is the rate of reaction. In the 30-mm-diam spheroids gas diffusion in the pores of limestone and burnt lime is fast relative to rates of the desulfurizing reactions. Over the temperature range investigated, e.g., 850° to 1200°C, there is internal desulfurization.

THIS paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the Darrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling.

CONSIDERABLE interest has been shown in recent years toward determining the crystal structure, mode of formation, and chemical composition of the x phase, designated as such by Andrews,' who was the first to establish its presence in Fe-Cr- Ni-Mo alloys . Later work2 by the same author has shown that the occurrence of x depends on the presence of some molybdenum in the alloy. The phase, which appears to be identical or very similar to a manganese, has a body-centered-cubic structure and is closely related to s phase. Koh observed a similarity in composition between x and s and speculated as to whether x might be an ordered structure of u which is known to have a tetragonal crystal

This paper summarizes recent developments in modeling of underground coal slurry haulage networks to determine optimum design and operating parameters. The model presented is based on a stochastic dynamic program¬ming formulation. It is applicable in any typical room-and-pillar or longwall mining configuration commonly practiced in the US. The formulation and structure of the model is general enough to handle design problems involving more than one face and mining method. Given the stochastic operating characteristics and a system layout, the model can be used to determine the equipment configuration and operating regimes that minimize the overall unit cost of coal haulage.

BROWN iron ore reserves of Franklin county are being proved economical by Heavy-Media separation at the Blackburn mine of the Shook & Fletcher Supply Co. about 120 miles north-west of Birmingham. The ore occurs under a cover of ferruginous chert and gravel and these materials are also disclosed as streaks in the ore body as it is mined. Previous methods of jigging and hand sorting the ore became too expensive because of rising wages but the use of Heavy-Media separation has proved economical and is making Franklin county the most promising source of additional reserves of brown ore.

Concrete is a complex, multicomponent mass whose stability is dependent on three principal variables: quality of the mix, its composition, and environment of the site. The aggregate is only one component, but its constituent minerals may react in unfavorable regimes and, given sufficient time, destroy the concrete. Therefore, besides ensuring that a concrete will meet the strength requirements of a structure, the concrete engineer must be confident that the mortar and aggregates will resist destructive processes. This paper reviews the principal causes and effects of aggregate instability, notes reactions of certain phases, and suggests precautionary measures that can be taken to extend the useful life of concrete structures.

TOQUEPALA is a porphyry copper deposit in which mineralization is localized by a large breccia pipe formed in dose genetic relation to intrusive rocks. The deposit is in southern Peru, 55 airline miles north of the small city of Tacna and the same distance inland from the port of 110. Quellaveco and Cuajone, geologically similar deposits, lie 12 and 19 miles north of Toquepala. Chuquicamata is 400 miles to the south. The deposit is high on the southwestern slope about 20 miles from the crest of the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes Chain. It lies in a mountainous desert where the steep southwesterly slope of the Andes is dissected by a succession of rapidly downcutting, deep canyons. Local topography is moderately rugged with a dendritic drainage pattern and an elevation of 8000 to 14,000 ft. Volcanic peaks along the crest of the Cordillera rise over 19,000 ft.

The member, possessed of the true scientific spirit which this Institute is especially intended to foster, brings here the results of his experience and study unrestrained by fear of giving undue advantage to competitor or rival. He appreciates, moreover, the responsibilities of membership and his duty to the cause, and how much is to be gained by himself from the keen but friendly criticism of his fellow-workers and even by the suggestions that may come of shrewd question or chance remark from those who labor in other but related fields.
