The: structure of anodic films formed on aluminum and other metals under varied conditions is not well known despite the wide use of such films both as protective coatings and as the dielectric medium in electrolytic condensers. The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under different sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc. The elcctron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (lop6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have showll widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. This paper reviews the three major distillation processes: multiple effect (LTV) evaporation, multi-stage flash distillation and vapor-compression forced circulation evaporation. Scale preventative measures are discussed for all saline water applications. Operational data is presented on the Freeport, Texas, demonstration plant, which is the first government facility to produce one million gallons per day of fresh water for a municipality. There has been much publicity concerning the water crisis that confronts many peoples today. There is little doubt that the arid regions - which include the Middle East, parts of Africa and the Caribbean — have suffered to no slight extent for the lack of this most precious commodity. But what about our own country? Government experts have extrapolated demands and flatly predict that by 1980 we will be faced with a shortage of 80 billion gal per day. The validity of this prediction has been disputed by others; however, it appears certain that there will always be a natural abundance in some areas, a shortage of supply in other areas. Distributing our total natural water resource equitably would be impossible. Transmission of water by means of aqueducts can be an expensive undertaking. The controversial Feather River Project in Calif. is an example. The estimated cost for this venture is a staggering three billion dollars. As our population continues to increase and our standard of living rises, agricultural and industrial requirements will be proportionate. What can be done to avoid a crisis? We can conserve and use our water for industrial and irrigation purposes more judiciously: we can attempt to eliminate pollution of our natural resources from sewage and industrial wastes; we can develop, while there is time, saline water conversion processes for the massive production of low cost fresh water. The scope of this paper will be limited to only the distillation type processes that are commercially feasible. The first step in making potable water is to find a source of raw material. An inexhaustible supply is provided by oceans in coastal regions, but the supply of water is more critical in the inland communities of our country. The source of raw material in these. regions is brackish well water and this must be utilized. There is a significant process difference when handling brackish water compared to seawater and this brings out an important fact: No single conversion method can be universally applied to solve all the water problems. Composition of the raw water and degree of distillate purity are factors which must be considered before a particular process is selected. Local conditions at the plant site, fuel costs, labor costs, disposal facilities, etc. are other equally important factors which must be evaluated. WATER CONVERSION PROCESSES Conversion processes commercially feasible today are: 1) multiple effect evaporation, 2) multiple flash distillation, 3) vapor compression distillation and 4) electrodialysis. The first three are distillation processes which take potable water out of the raw water, while the fourth is a membrane process which takes out the salt. In addition to the above there are a good number of other promising methods for production of potable water, many of them in the basic research stage. Freezing is another promising process with commercial potential. This process hinges upon the formation of ice crystals which are free of salt occulsions. Separation and washing of the crystals are problems that must be solved before this process can be considered commercially feasible. Freezing processes have several advantages mostly attributable to the low temperature of operation. This low temperature reduces the scaling and corrosion problems encountered in higher temperature operations. Several different freezing processes are being considered and will be tested in the pilot plant at Wrightsville Beach. One process is a flash freeze process, a second uses a secondary refrigerant such as butane for freezing, and a third process employs a secondary refrigerant particularly controlled to produce large ice crystals. CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

Construction of new large refineries was small in 1937, but extensive modernization and expansion of existing plants were made, bearing out the observation of the Bureau of Mines that the trend is strongly toward fewer and larger refineries. Building the first large combination skimming and cracking unit of 20,000-bbl. capacity was a startling achievement four or five years ago, but it has been exceeded many times since, and at least four units with a capacity of 30,000 bbl. or more were contracted for during 1937, as well as many other units of smaller but still substantial capacity. Installation of polymerization plants for producing high-antiknock blending naphthas from refinery gases progressed at an accelerated rate in refineries affording sufficient raw gas to make the use of the process profitable. The total productive capacity of polymerization units built and contracted for in the United States is now about 25,000 bbl., equivalent to the gasoline production from approximately 55,000 bbl. of crude oil a day. Octane Fuels Also utilizing refinery gases—the butylene fractions in particular—the plants for manufacture of iso-octane increased in number to such an extent that the combined capacities will enable the air forces of the United States shortly to go entirely to the use of 100-octane fuel, indications being that the Army will reach that position in 1938, with the Navy not far behind. Commercial air-lines are expected to take advantage of the greater power of high-antiknock fuels to gain the increased power and increased pay loads possible with their use. Work done on producing fuels with octanes beyond the 100 point has recently been reported, and their production can be expected, although at high cost, when the economics of the situation justifies and engines capable of utilizing them efficiently are available. THE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydrothermally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CEMENT AND CONCRETE LININGS During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, however, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 1 ½ pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with I2 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concrete and precast blocks. Those familiar with mill-practice understand the work required of an average bucket-elevator, but I wish to call special attention to the wear on the buckets. I have been studying in what manner the life and service of the bucket might be improved, and I feel that an adjustable lip, attachable to each bucket without the aid of rivets, will be of material advantage. For illustration, consider the feed-elevator of a typical mill in the Cæur d'Alene district. The ore is carried by water in a launder from the feed-rolls and dumped in the " boot" of the elevator, directly in front of the ascending bucket. Middlings from the return-rolls are similarly handled. Under this condition the bucket not only carries the ore, but also picks it up, and this latter requirement determines the life and service of the bucket. It might be said that it would be better practice to convey the feed to the elevator and dump it directly into the bucket, but at one mill at which this plan mas tried the results were disappointing and the rubber belt was badly worn. The wear of the bucket is confined to the lip and the corners which have to pick up the material. When the lip on a corner of a '7- by 12-in. malleable cast-iron bucket is worn down about 3 in., the bucket is of no further value as a carrier and has to be replaced. The worn bucket, containing about three-quarters by weight of the metal of the original bucket, has a scrap value of about 10 per cent. of that of a new bucket. In 1924, the United States Public Health Service was requested to undertake a special study of stream pollution. The Public Health Service asked the United States Bureau of Mines to take up the study because the training and experience of the personnel of the former was considered not to be as well suited to this type of investigation as that of the Bureau of Mines. Under H. Foster Bain, then Director of the Bureau, field investigations were begun in the spring of 1925. Along with mine-drainage wastes, the problem of gas-house and coke-oven waste was investigated in the laboratory and a method of treatment by sodium hydrate and benzol was found to be promising. The idea was obtained by A. C. Fieldner, chief engineer of the Bureau Experiment Stations, on a trip to Germany in 1924. He saw a practical application of the process, but obtained no information as to definite chemical or mechanical processes. Because of the then pending American patent applications by the German firm, we made no attempt to develop our findings further. Shortly afterward, a similar method of treatment was developed in the United States,' and since that time we have devoted our attention entirely to mine drainage. This paper is a presentation of some general facts and information gathered during the past five years on coal-mine drainage. Scope of Work There was such a diversity of opinion at the time this work was begun, on the whole subject and apparently so little accurately known, that it was decided to undertake a basic study from which first, certain definite information might be evident, and second, what might be considered

This paper deals with the methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. The fact that the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines causes a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over 15 varieties are mined on a scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at the rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, as far as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin1 and will not be considered here. Geographical and Geological Features of California Clay Deposits The greater part of the high-grade clays consumed by clay-working plants in California is mined from one of three producing areas in the state: (1) Lincoln, Placer County, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento valley, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento; (2) Ione, Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 38 miles northeast of Stockton, and 12 miles west of Jackson, one of the important towns of the famous Mother Lode gold-mining district; and (3) Alberhill, Riverside County, 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Other districts of minor importance are near Cardiff and Carlsbad, San Diego County, and El Toro and San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. In addition, there are a number of isolated properties in various parts of the state.

GRINDING costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actu-ally done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement, industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding. During the post-war period, and particularly during the past few years, coal production has been maintained at a reasonably constant level. This is in contrast to the greatly expanded demand for oil and natural gas. Certain markets for coal, such as the railroad and for home heating, have tended to decrease, but this decline has been offset by an increase in demand for other uses, particularly for electric power. Since the United States has very large reserves of coal and relatively limited reserves of natural gas and oil, from the conservation viewpoint, it would be better if the increased demand were to fall more heavily on coal. Where coal has lost certain markets, the decision has not always been made on the basis of price, and, in fact, in many instances, the markets have been lost where coal could show a price advantage. There are various reasons for this situation but it can be attributed in the main to the preference of certain consumers for the convenience offered by liquid and gaseous fuels. In the production of chemicals such as benzene, phenol, or ammonia, coal still plays an important role. As co-products from coke-oven operations, a wide variety of aromatic chemicals are available. In recent years, however, the production has not been sufficient to supply the demand, and it is not profitable to build coke ovens to make chemicals unless there is a market for the coke as well. As a result, the petroleum industry is beginning to take a stronger part in the production of aromatic chemicals. Natural gas has almost displaced the coke-oven water-gas machine for the production of hydrogen for the synthesis of ammonia, as well as for the synthesis of methyl alcohol and other oxygenated compounds. This information is not new and is given here only as a basis for the discussion of the broad significance of the development of the gasification process. It is clear that if coal is to regain some of its old fuel markets, as well as to maintain a position in the field of chemical synthesis, processes must be available for converting coal to the type of fuel the customer wants, and for a cheap method of furnishing gaseous raw material to the chemical industry. The operation of coke ovens and water-gas machines is not the answer to this problem for at least two important reasons: (1) the limited supply and relatively high price of good coking coals, and (2) the relatively high costs of the combined operations of coking and manufacture of water gas.

FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. IN the field of mineral exploration, 1956 can be looked upon as the International Geochemical Year. This is not because of unusual developments in geochemical prospecting but rather because of the world-wide effort in geochemistry and the realization that geochemistry is now an established exploration method. Use of mining geophysics has continued to increase. Those extensively employing exploration techniques indicate that developments of the past few years have permitted better programming of methods, from reconnaissance to location of drill- holes. There is greater diversification of methods- reliance is not placed on results of one. However, it is realized that often it is more economical to drill an anomaly than to conduct additional expensive geophysical surveys

The Mg-Zr alloy ZA and Mg-Mn alloy AM503(S) are shown to have a markedly improved resistance to creep deformation after suitable heat treatments. This improvement makes them suitable for certain stress-bearing fuel element components in nuclear reactors. The extent of strengthening is described and an explanation of the behavior of both materials is given, based on a combination of strain-aging and grain growth. The increase in operating temperatures of fuel element components in Calder Hall type nuclear reactors has necessitated the development of magnesium base alloys with a very high resistance to creep at temperatures up to 500°C. Such alloys are not required for fuel element cans, which require high-creep ductility rather than strength, but for can supporting and stabilizing components, which are needed to support the imposed loads without deforming more than about 1 pct in times of up to 40,000 hr. The amount and type of alloying addition made to magnesium for these parts is limited by the necessity of keeping the cross-section to thermal neutrons as low as possible. The alloys must also possess a high resistance to oxidation in CO2. Alloys which have been developed for this application include ZA, an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.7 pct Zr and AM503(S), an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.75 pct Mn. In the as-extruded condition these alloys are very weak and ductile in creep but it has been found that they can be strengthened to a significant extent by heat treatment. This paper describes the method of developing a high-creep resistance in ZA and AM503(S), the extent of the strengthening produced and discusses the probable mechanisms of strengthening. TEST MATERIALS Specimens were taken from typical casts of ZA and AM503(S) alloys extruded into 2 1/4-in.-diam bars, supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd. Typical analyses of the bars were as follows: The as-extruded mean grain diameter was 0.001 to 0.002 in. for the ZA alloy and 0.003 in. for the AM503(S) alloy. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Extruded bars of ZA alloy, 2 1/4 in. in diameter and 9 in. long, were heat treated in electrical resistance furnaces in an atmosphere of flowing CO2 containing 50 to 300 ppm water, thereby reducing the extent of oxidation compared with that which would have occurred in air. Heat treatments were carried out at 600oc for times of 8, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr and material was subsequently both furnace cooled and water quenched. In order to measure the effect of time of heat treatment, specimens were creep tested at 400°C and 336 psi for about 1000 hr. Subsequently, the behavior of material heat treated for 96 hr at 600°C and furnace cooled was tested at a variety of stresses from 200° to 500°C. Tests were also conducted at 200o and 400°C on material in the as-extruded condition for comparative purposes. With the AM503(S) alloy, only the effect of heat treatment at 565°C for 4 hr was examined. It has been shown1 that such a heat treatment produces marked strengthening in this alloy. Tests on this material were conducted at a variety of stresses at 200°, 300°, and 400oc with comparative tests on as-extruded material at 200o and 400°C. The creep tests were carried out on machines using dead-weight loading and direct micrometer strain measurements on specimens 5 in. long and 0.357 in. diameter. At temperatures of 400° C and below, the creep tests were conducted in air, but at higher temperatures an atmosphere of CO2 was used. Grain size measurements were made on ZA in the extruded and heat treated states and on each specimen after creep testing. This was done by a line count of a minimum of 20 grains in two or three random fields in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The same method was used for measuring the grain size of as-extruded AM503(S), but the grain size of the heat treated material was so large that this method could not be employed. For heat-treated AM503(S) the large grained characteristics (between 0.1 and 1 in.) were confirmed by the measurement of individual grains. In the case of the ZA alloy, specimens taken from various stages in the program were analysed for hydrogen by a combustion method. Material in various states was also analysed for the soluble and insoluble zirconium content by dissolving in dilute hydrochloric acid. IN the course of a study of stress corrosion cracking of AuCu,, it was necessary to develop new electropolishing and metallographic etching methods. The techniques are generally useful for Cu-Au alloys, including the AuCu composition in which transformation markings are well delineated. For electropolishing, the only satisfactory electrolyte and procedure that has been found1 has the composition given in Table I. The solution must be vigorously stirred while polishing and the temperature maintained in the range of 55" to 62°C. The electrolyte is very unstable and can be used only for 10 to 15 min after which its color changes and a dark-brown precipitate forms. The polishing time is between 1 and 4 min depending on the initial surface preparation. The use of a hood is recommended to avoid the danger of cyanide gas which may form at one of the electrodes even though the solution is alkaline. The optimum current and voltage conditions for vertical anode and platinum cathode are on the plateau shown in Fig. 1, in which voltage is measured across the cell terminals. At voltages below the plateau, etching of grain boundaries occurs and under some conditions, which have not been clearly defined, octahedral etch figures are observed. For general purpose grain-size determination in polycrystalline alloys, a 3 pct solution of iodine in methyl alcohol is used with excellent results. However, when it is necessary to reveal small orientation differences or concentration gradients in an alloy, the iodine etch is not satisfactory. For this purpose, a highly satisfactory etching procedure was developed during this investigation. It involves the use of the vapor given off by freshly prepared aqua regia. The solution employed is 3HC1 to lHNO, which decomposes in accordance with the reaction HNO, + 3HC1 = NOCl + 2H,O + Cl,. The polished specimen surface is held about 1 to 2 cm above an aqua regia solution for 2 to 10 sec depending on the intensity of the contrast required and the surface is not subsequently washed. The results obtained with a coarse grained cast structure are shown in Fig. 2. Subgrain boundaries in a single crystal and concentration gradients within the boundaries are developed by the same treatment with the results shown in Fig. 3. Obviously, any conclusions regarding structure-dependent properties will be modified by the pronounced heterogeneity, which is not clearly evident when more conventional methods are used. Interesting structural details are also revealed by treatment for 4 hr at 850°C in unpurified tank argon. Fig. 4 shows a pattern characteristic of orientation-dependent oxidation.

THE cams at present universally used in stamp mills lift the tappets with an involute form of curve, to which the surface of the tappet is always tangent; moreover, the line of contact between tappet and cam, if produced, would pass through the center of the stem. This is no doubt a desirable feature, but the writer has long believed that it would be much more desirable if the cam were to pick up the stamp without shock, and gradually increase the upward velocity of the stamp throughout its upward movement. The involute form of cam attempts to impart instantly a considerable upward velocity to the stamp, starting it from a state of rest, and the result is a destructive blow, a great deal of noise, and much wear and vibration. The writer has developed a form of cam which will lift the stamp with a motion similar to that of the piston of an engine between the end and middle of its stroke; in other words, harmonic motion, from the point. of zero to maximum velocity. The curve will give this ideal motion only when the stamp is set for the exact drop for which the cam was designed, but the improved cam will not be as bad as the involute cam until the drop is reduced one-half. In other words, if a cam is designed for a 6-in. drop, it will be some improvement over the usual form of cam until the drop is only 3 in. Any cam, whatever its form, must of course lift the stamp in the same number of degrees of revolution; therefore, with this new form, since the stamp starts more slowly on its upward course, it must end up by going faster, the average speed being the same as with the involute cam. The stamp, after it is no longer in contact with the cam, keeps on going up a certain distance, which is easily calculated. It is therefore possible to hang up a stamp without a cam stick, if the fingers are not more than 1/8 in. longer than necessary to hold the tappet above the cam.

BY the beginning of 1945 the output of petroleum products for war had reached a volume and a rate of growth which practically assured all requirements so long as war continued. The programs for making gasoline, lubricating oils of required quality, toluene for T.N.T., and chemicals for manufacture of synthetic rubber, as well as numerous other lesser petroleum products, were all well in hand, and unless catastrophic developments occurred there was no doubt of the ability of the industry to meet all demands. The end of the fighting found the refining industry working at top capacity on war commodities, but also in position to convert quickly into peacetime civilian production. 100-octane Aviation Gasoline Production of the vital 100-octane aviation gasoline, starting with approximately 44,000- bbl. daily capacity at our entry into the war, reached a top of 525,000 bbl. a day in the United States by the end of hostilities. With 75,- bbl. from other Allied sources, the grand total was 600,000 bbl., or 25,000,000 gal. each 24 hr. available to the armed forces had fighting continued. At times it was a close race between requirements and production, but never were any important military operations involving the use of high-octane aviation gasoline held up or delayed for lack of sufficient output of such material. The undivided effort of the entire refining industry in full cooperation with the Government made this record possible. Little diminution in output followed the German surrender on May 7. Plans called for a correspondingly greater activity for the Japanese war and possibly for well into 1946. But when the Japanese sued for peace on Aug. 10 most contracts were quickly canceled. Substantial stocks, reputed to be somewhere between 20,000,000 to 30,000,000 bbl., built up largely between V-E and V-J day pending organization of the larger Japanese war program envisaged after Germany gave up, were in the Government's hands in this country, in addition to working stocks in the war areas. Toluene and Lubricating Oil Requirements for toluene for T.N.T. increased rapidly as bombing speeded UP with increasing control of the air by the Allies in Europe and Asia. Production in excess of T.N.T. requirements which had been going into 1000-Octane aviation fuel blending during 1943 and 1944 was again drawn into explosive manufacture early in 1945. In anticipation of the war continuing into 1946, two new plants were ordered constructed, the decision being announced in April, plans calling for one of them to get into production about the end of 1945, the other in the first quarter of 1946.
