Low-temperature measurements of photolumines-cence were used to evaluate the progvess in materials development. Variation of the impurity type, impurity concentration, and method of growth were used to clarify the chemical origin of defects in GaAs. Melt-g~ozun, epitaxial vapor-, and solution-grown samples were studied. A comparison of measurements at 77" and 20°K shows that more defects can be observed at the lower temperature. Th'vee residual defects were identified in relatively pure GaAs. These were: silicon, copper, and a gallium vacancy-donor complex. Solution growth from a gallium solution inhibits the formation of the latter two. Eleven defects were studied and the "optical" activation energy of some of these, namely, silicon, cobalt, and chromium, has not been reported in the literature before. THE discovery of the injection laser in 1962 prompted extensive measurements of the photoluminescence of GaAs. The measurements were made at 77°K on GaAs doped with shallow impurities at various doping levels and compared with electroluminescence1'2 and absorp- tion data.374 In addition, lower-temperature studies were made on relatively pure GaAS' and on GaAs doped with oxygen,5'" manganese,' and copper.' The only previous evaluation was done at 77°K when solution-grown and melt-grown GaAs were compared.O No identification of defects was made but it was shown that some of the deep-level luminescence seen in melt-grown GaAs was absent in solution-grown GaAs. The present work extends the comparison of preparation techniques to lower temperatures and to a study of epitaxial vapor-grown GaAs. It is particularly valuable for thin epitaxial layers since they cannot be analyzed by conventional analytical techniques. In addition, by varying the impurity type and impurity concentration the chemical origin and nature of defects in GaAs was demonstrated. Eleven defects were studied in all. Three of the defects were identified as residual defects which often contaminate GaAs prepared from the melt and the vapor. Only one such defect was observed in GaAs grown from a gallium solution and this was identified as silicon.

INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

As a result of information that the Navy Department was questioning the advisability of raising the maximum allowable exposure temperature for zinc-coated steel parts from 500 to 750 F., it was decided to make a series of high temperature tension tests on several types of uncoated and zinc-coated steels. The objective was to determine at what temperature intergranular penetration of galvanized steel by zinc might take place under conditions of rapidly applied stress and temperature. Tests were conducted in the range from room temperature to 1400 F. In this range, low-carbon and high-carbon steels did not suffer any adverse effects due to zinc coatings. In fact, at 1400 F. the zinc coatings appeared to have a beneficial effect. In stainless steel, the coating had no effect up to 1000 F. Above this temperature, the zinc coating appeared to cause a marked loss in ductility and a less pronounced loss in strength. There was no visible evidence of zinc penetration of the stainless steel structure, but it was assumed that this was the cause of the adverse effect.

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

IN ref. 1, on the basis of tension and torsion experiments with single crystals of a brass, the values given in Table I were obtained for elastic coefficients. It was pointed out by Zener that the values for the 71.2 pct Cu were not satisfactory, since they resulted in a negative value for the bulk modulus, namely —4.17X1012 sq cm per dyne. In reevaluating the data of this investigation, it was determined that the reason for this negative bulk modulus lay in the extrapolation of the reciprocal Young's modulus to the zero value of the orientation function shown in Fig. 5 of ref. 1. This extrapolation was reevaluated by the method of least squares (50 pct probability) and a new value of the coefficient S,, was determined as 18.9220.42X 10M sq cm per dyne in lieu of the value originally reported of 18.82x10 sq cm per dyne. This new value of S, leads to a new value of S, of — 9.43 X101" sq cm per dyne. The values of the other coefficients are unchanged. results. This value compares with the value of 12.3X10 sq cm per dyne reported by Schmid and Boas? The new results are summarized in Table 11. These results follow similar qualitative trends, previously published,' relative to the effect of zinc content. However, the derived values of C11, C,, C,, and K are so sensitive to the uncertainty in the first decimal place of the S, values that they are probably not useful. This uncertainty must also apply to the previous results of Masima and Sachs," who obtained S, values from a similar extrapolation drawn wholly above their data points. ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NEW YORK SECTION - The annual meeting of the New York Section was held at the Machinery Club, May 7. While the dinner, at which fifty attended, was in progress, the names of the nominees for next year's officers were posted. The result of the election was as follows: Chairman, E. P. Mathewson; vice-chairmen, William Y. Westervelt, R. M. Atwater, Jr.; treasurer, Wilber Judson; executive committeemen, Lucius W. Mayer, Edwin S. Berry. The subject for the evening was "Organization and Campaign in France of the 27th Engineers." Colonel O. B. Perry described the many difficulties surmounted, for it was necessary to work with untrained men ALLEN H. ROGERS WALTER S. He described the unusually fine character and physique of his officers, which made it possible to make the untrained men most efficient. He described in some detail the work of building bridges over the Meuse River and the bringing up of supplies to the first army base, in particular at the Argonne-Meuse sector; General Pershing gave a personal commendation of the work undertaken by this regiment. The Colonel described the methods of operating the transportation of ammunition and supplies to the "army dumps," by which at the time of signing the armistice there had been brought up 600,000 tons of equipment for use in the projected campaigns. An interesting item was that 3,600,000 sand bags had been provided, in case the Germans should be able to turn the line of the American troops. Captain Edwin S. Berry described the methods of sending materials to the front lines and gave figures to indicate the huge quantities required, adding that the order of preference was troops, ammunition, food, and engineers' supplies. Nearly 55 years have elapsed since the U. S. Geological Survey was organized. During this period the mineral industries have grown from infancy or early childhood to well developed maturity, and some mining industries appear to be declining. Decline in mining is even more conspicuous in certain districts, or even states, than in any mining industry as a whole, and discoveries or developments of important new districts have been very few in recent years. Our reserves of most metals and nonmetals are adequate for many years of normal production, subject to changes in rate of exploitation that may be caused by foreign competition and by changes in technology and market conditions; but the declining production of many districts and the scarcity of important new discoveries to compensate for them is cause for some apprehension. It is likely that future production will depend to a considerable extent on deep exploration and on the thorough examination of places in and adjoining existing districts where significant outcrops are lacking and only apparently insignificant geologic features offer encouraging clues—more so than on the discovery of entirely new districts. Even the possible discovery of new districts, which have escaped the intensive search by the nontechnical prospector, must be dependent on geologic information. There is therefore no need for argument as to the value of geology to the mining industry; and the need of continuing to advance the science. The U. S. Geological Survey's past contributions to mining geology, as expressed in its official reports and other publications, are recognized by Ransome in his historical review of mining geology in the Lindgren volume.' These contributions have helped to form the basis of modern mining geology, which has grown rapidly in the last 25 years. This growth has witnessed the organization and maintenance of geologic staffs by mining companies in several districts, and their detailed work, together with the fact that nearly all of the larger mining districts have

During the war period of quicksilver activity there were a number of departures from what may be termed the classical quicksilver metallurgy. Attempts were made to beneficiate low-grade ores by gravity concentration and flotation; mechanical furnaces began to replace the Scott furnace and the vertical coarse-ore furnaces, and condensers of sewer tile and redwood tanks were used in place of the older brick and stone condensing chambers. Other developments that have occurred during the current period of quicksilver activity are mainly in the nature of improvement and further refinement of those started during the war period. Each period of quicksilver activity has been accompanied by the proposal of various new processes, including wet methods for the treatment of quicksilver ores and innovations in furnaces, retorts and condenser equipment. As far as the author knows, nothing of economic significance in the way of "new processes" has been developed. There is in fact no real need for any essentially new process for the treatment of quicksilver ores; the direct furnace treatment is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, with rare exceptions, the quicksilver industry has no complex or refractory ore problems corresponding to those which are receiving more and more attention from metallurgists in other branches of the nonferrous field. Untler these conditions improvements in quicksilver metallurgy must be looked for through the adaptation of current developments in engineering and metallurgy generally to the particular needs of quicksilver practice rather than through the invention of new processes. Preliminary Treatment of Quicksilver Ores At Sulphur Bank, in the treatment of old dump material left by the early operators, wet screening is being used as a preliminary step in concentration ahead of flotation. Power shovels and trucks are used to deliver some 400 tons of ore per day to the lower terminal of a hoist, which in turn discharges the material at the top of the screening plant. Wet screening is carried on in two stages. Depending on the character of the material, 1-in. or 2-in. punched screens are used on the first trommel.

If the safety factor of a mine hoisting rope is checked for the lowest depth, is the rope then safe for all levels? The answer here is no. A new set of volues is proposed. HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper. The safety factor of a hoisting rope as defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines' is the ratio of the static load to the tensile strength of the rope. It is calculated by dividing the breaking strength of the rope* In Fig. 1 curves A and B are plotted against the vertical suspended distance, which is the abscissa, and the factor of safety, the ordinates. Curve C is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of curve A and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety for new rope for any particular depth. Curve D is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of Curve B and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety when ropes should be discarded for any particular depth. If a new rope were applied with a minimum factor of safety, then the vertical distance or ordinate under curve D for any particular depth, divided by the vertical distance or ordinate under curve C, would represent the minimum percent of remaining area intact that could be allowed before the rope would be discarded. Also, that section of the ordinate between curve C and curve D is proportional to the section of the area of the new rope that could be allowed for wear and broken wires. Considering that point at 2500 ft on the chart, the ratio do to co would be the minimum percent of rope area remaining at the point of discard. The ratio of that portion of the ordinate cd to co would represent maximum percent of area of a new rope available for wear and broken wires.

THE desire of the engineers over the last few years, growing out of their contact with public affairs, that this Institute should take a wider vision than the narrower field of technology and should apply its skill to the development of civic problems which must lay in their foundation on engineering, has led to this discussion today. Some of us in San Francisco, in discussing this question of the relation of the engineers to civic problems, raised the question as to whether or not in this national emergency it was not the duty of the Mining Engineers to bring, forward their combined skill and knowledge and experience to bear upon the problems of the coal industry. This industry, considered as a whole, is one of the worst functioning industries in the United States. It is equipped with capital, with machinery, plants and labor to a peak load at least 20 per cent. above the average necessity. This peak load, therefore, involves the use of probably 100,000 men diverted from other productive industries; it involves an intermittency of employment through its whole personnel that results not only in a long train of human woe, but results also in a higher cost of coal -to the general public. The problem of whether the industry can, by any device, be cured or even partially cured of its intermittency, is solely an engineering problem. It is therefore an apropos problem for this Institute. Your President and myself and others thought that we could best develop this discussion by calling upon men of large experience in the particular branches of the soft coal industry, to bring the facts in front of this general committee, with a view to an exhaustive discussion and perhaps subsequently the appointment of a committee to formulate those facts and such remedies as may be developed into a report that would be of constructive value.

The Pittsburgh coal-region, if we regard the greatness of its extent, the picturesque beauty of its scenery, the salubrity of its climate, its relative situation on the Continent, the fertility of its soil, its unrivalled mineral wealth, and its magnificent system of natural transportation, is, perhaps, the most valuable spot on the surface of the planet. Unlike the mythical Paradise inhabited by one man and one woman, it swarms with an abounding population, not living on the free gifts of nature without care and without toil, hut expending its energies in unremitting labor, reinforced by the most elaborate machinery, in the production of everything which mankinds needs or desires; and unlilte the Paradise of story from which flowed the four great rivers of the world in opposite directions, its own four rivers How from the surrounding world into it, to constitute by their union the great highway water-course which divides the Northern from the Southern States. These rivers are the Monongahela, coming from the south, the Yonghiogheny from the southeast, the Kiskiminetas from the east, and the Allegheny from the north. Uniting at the great city of pittsburgh, they constitnte the Ohio, which flows northwest and west, and then south and southwest, toward the Mississippi. The Monongahela has been made navigable by a system of dams and pools the Allegheny was navigable in its natural condition; the KisKiminetas was made navigable by a State canal which has been vacated ; and the Youghiogheny remains unnavigable. Railroads supplement the deficiencies of the rivers, follow their hanks, and share in the transportation for which the waters are not sufficient. Railroads and rivers concentrate at Pittsburgh; other railroads cross the highlands to the east and west; and branch roads ascend the side-valleys and ravines to the mines on the uplands. The whole region is a scene of life; towns and villages dot its surface in all directions ; hundreds of gangways open upon the sides of all the valleys, and deliver coal to trains of cars which move beneath them at water-level; furnaces and rolling-mills abound; hundreds of oil-wells furnish a flood of liquid fuel to pipe-lines

THE mechanical properties of magnesium-alloy castings are greatly improved by grain refinement, and at present considerable attention is being paid to methods of obtaining fine-grained castings. One method of achieving this end is the use of proper melting and superheating techniques. These have been employed commercially to a great extent, but no comprehensive study of the subject appears to have been published at present. Numerous investigations found in the literature include some reference to superheating techniques, 1-4 and Achenbach, Nipper and Piwowarsky,5 based principally on thermal analysis, ascribe the grain-refining action of superheating to the influence of solid foreign particles or dissolved gases present in the melt upon the course of crystallization. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the principal facts concerning the effect of superheating on grain size of magnesium alloys. Attempts are also made to explain the experimental results in terms of a general hypothesis. The investigations are limited chiefly to common commercial casting alloys. In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to determine the factors influencing grain size and to develop a proper technique for the preparation of samples. The preliminary tests made by the author indicated that the grain size of magnesium alloys resulting from the solidification of a melt is determined by alloy composition, presence of impurities, rate of cooling during solidification, thermal history of the melt and to some extent the structure of the charge used. The rate of cooling is in turn dependent upon the mass of the melt, pouring temperature, and dimensions, properties and temperature of the mold into which the melt is poured. The final grain size of the alloys is still further modified by heat-treatment subsequent to casting. It is not within the scope of the present paper to discuss all of these factors, and it would suffice to note here that when equal amounts of magnesium alloys are prepared from the same alloying materials, melted in graphite crucibles under the same thermal conditions, then cast into graphite molds at a constant temperature, the .resultant solids have the same grain size. By maintaining all other factors constant, it is thus possible to vary thermal conditions of a melt and to examine the grain size of resultant castings. THE term "differential flotation" is used to denote a flotation operation in which separation is effected between two or more minerals of the same class; e. g., lead sulfide from zinc sulfide, pyrite from blende, chalcopyrite from pyrite, chalcopyrite from blende. At present, so far as published work shows, there seem to be two theories as to the mechanics of differential flotation. The earlier and more generally accepted theory is that the so-called depressing agents alter the surface of one or more of the sulfides in the ore, either by chemical action or adsorption, so that it is no longer amenable to flotation, but that these depressed sulfides can be revived, after the unaffected sulfide has been floated, by reagents which react chemically with the altered surface and make it amenable to flotation. More recently, Professor Taggart1 has advanced the theory that slime adsorption is an important factor in differential flotation. He believes that, with the proper use of a class of agents, which he calls .dispersion agents and which include practically all the depressing agents, one can cause the slime to adsorb differentially on sulfide surfaces. A gangue-slime coated sulfide surface will act as a gangue particle and will not float. If, subsequently, an agent that will remove the gangue-slime coating is added, the sulfide again assumes its original surface and can be floated as an ordinary sulfide. This-is the basis of the slime theory of differential flotation. Timber Butte mill at Butte, Mont., is a typical lead-zinc flotation concentrator. Neihart ore, chosen for investigation in this work, is one of the custom ores treated at that mill. Practice at Timber Butte mill in February, 1928, was as follows: A combined lead-zinc concentrate was first made using 0.2 lb. per ton on the ore of potassium xanthate and 0.03 lb. per ton of Cleveland Cliffs oil after 1.5 lb. per ton of lime and 1 lb. per ton of calcium chloride has been added just before the ball mill. The concentrate was then thickened to 70 per cent. solids. Potassium cyanide to the amount of 0.3 lb. per ton and zinc sulfate in the quantity of 0.5 lb. per ton were added to the thickened pulp and the whole

MINING and Metallurgy closed the year 1928 showing a small profit, the receipts, exclusive of the charge against members, dues for subscriptions, having been $43,067.81, and expenditures $40,925.58. In accord with the policy of the Board the budget is made each year with the purpose of balancing the accounts rather than the maximum of profit from the undertaking since it is the service the journal performs for members that justifies its existence. This service is being constantly increased. Within the year a number of changes have been made in the dress of the magazine, a new cover adopted, color more frequently used, and illustrations more generally employed. These changes seem to have been appreciated both by readers and advertisers. More space has been devoted to papers read before local sections and to the news of their activities. It is believed that this has helped materially in sustaining and increasing the interest in such meetings. The general, regional, and division meetings have also been fully reported and news of Board meetings, of the work of the various committees, of the employment service and other activities of the Institute has been spread before its members month by month. The 570 pages of reading matter printed in the course of the year constitute not only a record of what the Institute was doing but of what the most representative sections possible of the members of the mining and metallurgical professions were thinking. With 9000 members scattered around the world, occupying key positions in the industry, the Institute affords through its own journal an unsurpassed medium for broad contact and enables the readers with the minimum of expenditure of time and at no extra money expense to keep a general contact with the whole range of subjects touched by miners and metallurgists. In these days of intense specialization but rapid change such contact is particularly valuable. The more formal papers presented to the Institute are published in the Transactions, Technical Publications and the special volumes. Mining and Metallurgy carries abstracts of all papers published ,by the Institute and prints in full the shorter, less detailed papers and those which reflect work in progress rather than finished. Such papers have a news value which is supplemented by editorial comment, discussion by members and others, and the actual news of the organization itself. Without therefore attempting to fill the place of a general news sheet, it has a timeliness that gives it an immediate value much appreciated by the readers. In accord with the general policy of the Board every effort will be made constantly to improve the quality of the magazine to the full extent that its revenue will permit. THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.

The year 1954 witnessed great activity in the field of geology as applied to mining. The search for in nearly all districts is becoming more and more intensified as established reserves are being depleted. Much geologic work has been directed to finding extensions of known orebodies, but prospecting in new areas has constituted a large part of the program of many operators. The acute need for additional reserves has brought into the search all the tools known to the geologic profession. This is reflected directly by frequent references to geophysical and geochemical methods in the regional reviews that follow. The lone prospector of the early days of metal mining has been eliminated almost completely by modern scientific methods involving surface and subsurface geology, exploratory drilling, geophysics, and geochemistry. Nearly all new exploration is based on long-range programs coupled with studies of regional geology to determine the structural environment of areas of mineralization. The success of this approach has encouraged new operators in the field of exploration to adopt similar policies. Only in the search for uranium ores is the individual prospector still active, but the familiar picture of the burro heavily loaded with grubstake, gold pan, and pick and shovel has been replaced by the Geiger counter and the scintillometer carried by hand, by truck, or by airplane.

INTRODUCTION. THERE are three general methods available for obtaining commercial brown iron-ore : hand-screening; washing; and washing and concentrating. Hand-screening has produced a large tonnage of ore in the past, but is rapidly falling into disuse, except as a preliminary step, largely because modern furnace-practice requires all foreign material to be separated from ores before they are delivered to the furnace, and hand-screened ores can rarely be made to fulfill that requirement. Another argument against hand-screening is, that the waste-pile often contains as much ore as the screen recovers. The operation known as hand-screening consists of throwing the ore-bearing material against a stationary inclined screen of 0.5- to 0.75-in. mesh, similar in construction to the screens employed in sand-pits. The recently-prospected brown-ore deposits of Cuba seem to offer possibilities for hand-screening not possessed by the average American deposit, since these ores are not associated with worthless clays. Washing, and washing and concentrating, may be discussed together, since concentrating is never practical on brown iron-ore, except to treat ores that have already been washed. (Strictly speaking, washing might be classed as concentrating, but it is never so designated by brown-ore men.) The various steps of removing ore-bearing material and converting it into ore suitable for blast-furnace use, may be grouped under five heads: loading for transportation ; transporting ; feeding into the washer; washing; and concentrating. These five subjects will be considered in consecutive order. Each of these successive steps may be accomplished in a number of different ways, the choice depending entirely upon the character of the ore-bearing material to be treated.

Montana is leading the way in the field of mined-land reclamation with new laws and new ideas. The Montana Department of State Lands is combining new legislation and practical application techniques to all mining operations in the state. Road building, stream relocations, or settling systems can be designed to meet the environmental problems. Mineral exploration now requires a new and closer look at drill site locations, road gradients, and exploration tools. The problems and costs of land rehabilitation must be thoroughly understood by the exploration geologist in order to satisfactorily conduct exploration in Montana.

The year 1942 in the South Central Texas area was marked by a sharp curtailment of exploratory drilling as compared with the past several years. In the 33 counties that compose this district, 17 of which are nonproducing counties, only 51 exploratory wells were drilled during the year 1942. This compares with 118 exploratory wells drilled during 1941, or a decrease of more than 50 per cent. At the end of the year 10 active exploratory wells were drilling in this area, as against 19 being drilled at the end of 1941. Of the exploratory wells drilled, two brought in oil wells and were new field discoveries and one was a gas well extending a recently discovered shallow gas area in the western part of the district. This compares with five new oil fields, one new . gas field and two extension wells drilled in 1941. Both new field discoveries were small and in areas outside of the general trend of the main producing horizon of the district in Edwards limestone: One new field, the Imogene, in Atascosa County, is a deep Edwards limestone prospect at 7500 ft., and the other new field, the Poth, in Wilson County, is a sSEa110w Wilcox (Eocene) prospect at 4000 ft. Subsequent drilling in each field to the end of I942 has proved disappointing. There were no new discoveries along the old Balcones fault-line trend, although 35 of the exploratory wells were drilled in counties along this trend. Approximately 38 wells were drilled in or adjacent to the proven fields of the district, of which 18 were oil wells, 2 were gas wells and 17 were dry holes. The district produced 6,186,178 bbl. of oil during 1942, which was a 7 per cent decrease under production for 1941. Approximately 4,961,000 bbl. of this total production, a slight increase over 1941, was produced by the four Edwards-limestone fields, Luling, Branyon, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, and the rest of the production came from the other 42 active fields in the district. During the year, 20 new producing wells were completed and 221 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. This alarming excess rate of abandonment~ over completions will be further reflected undoubtedly by a further decreased rate of 1943 production under 1942. Two active fields in the district in which more than one producing well was completed during the year were Bee Creek and Washburn. The majority of exploratory work in the district was confined to areas along the Wilcox trend, with a certain amount in progress along the deeper Edwards limestone trend. The successful completion of sevemi wells in the Washburn field from multiple sands in the Lower Wilcor (Eocene) has stimulated exploratory work along this trend, while the completion of a small well in the Imogene field from the Edwards limestone at 7500 ft. has renewed interest in this horizon at depths greater than generally are producing in the district.
