IN giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N. 65° 35' and long. W. 168°. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the western-most point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions are of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption '1 The Land's End of Two Worlds."

The largest deposits of chromite in the United States occur in tabular layers in the lower part of the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Nearly 900,000 long tons of chromite concentrates have been produced from mines and mills in this area, and reserves equivalent to more than 2,500,000 long tons of Cr2O3 remain in the ground. Layered concentrations of chromite (known as chromitite zones) occur only within olivine-rich layers of the Peridotite member of the Ultramafic zone of the Stillwater. As many as thirteen chromitite zones, lying conformably one above another, have been found, but only five of them are thick enough to be of any conceivable economic interest, and only two of them have been mined to date. Individual chromitite zones can be recognized by their distinctive internal character and by their stratigraphic position in the Peridotite member. The chemical composition of chromite varies consistently between and within the different chromitite zones. The zones range in thickness from about an inch to more than 12 feet, and the Cr2O3, content of their chromite ranges from 36.6 to 49.2 weight per cent. In any given area, the G chromitite zone is the thickest, but the chromite of the H chromitite zone has the highest grade. Laterally, the thickness of the chromitite zones is related to the thickness of the Peridotite member; in general all are thicker in the eastern part of the Stillwater than in the western part.

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.

The interior of West Australia is an arid table-land, elevated 1400 feet above the sea. This plateau is flanked to the south by the Tertiary limestones which fringe the Great Australian Bight. It is bordered northward by the Carboniferous beds of the Fitzroy river and westward by the granite of the Darling hills, while to the cast this wide area, about 900 miles square, slopes downward imperceptibly into an undulating plain of sand, which stretches with dismal persistence across the boundary of South Australia. The waters of the ocean receded from this tract of land long ago; it is probably the oldest landsurface on the globe, and represents the basal wreck of a much larger continent. Fig. 1 is a map of this region. The Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie gold-fields are situated in the southwestern part of the region. The rock-formation consists of granite penetrated by diorites and andesites. The latter are occasionally associated with tuff's, which have been readily mistaken for sedimentaries. There are no fossil-bearing rocks, such as would afford a datum-line from which to measure the relative geological age of the prevailing formation. On the extreme edges of the mining territory there are, it is true, remnants of sand-rock which are considered identical with the " Desert Sandstone " of Queensland, determined by Daintree to be of Mesozoic age. But even this formation has evidently been laid down so long subsequent to the underlying rocks that it serves merely to emphasize their much greater antiquity. In their characteristics and in their relations to each other, the granite and the diorite of the Coolgardie region appear to me much to resemble the Laurentian granite and the Huronian

HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. The mining industry of Japan is not very large, but it is very old. Some of the mines have 1000 years of history. At Nara, the capitol 1300 years ago, the great Buddha of bronze that was cast at that time was of metal mined from several localities in Japan including the Akenobe-Ikuno district, one of the present Mitsubishi properties. Methods of smelting copper and iron, it is believed, came from China via Korea. A characteristic of the Japanese mining industry today is one of buying abroad and treating at home, a variety of ores of different compositions. All in all, Japan's mineral deposits under its own flag are inadequate for its great industrial strengths.

Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks —the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but available data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10.550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million. THE GEM STOCKS The Gem stocks, considered to be outliers of the Idaho batholith of Late Cretaceous age, are located in the northern half of the Mullan quadrangle, and extend from the town of Gem, Idaho, along a strike of N30°E for a distance of approximately five miles. They occur as two major masses of monzonitic rocks commonly referred to as the North stock, which covers an area of 1.1 sq miles, and the South stock, which covers 2.6 sq miles. The areal pattern is roughly club-shaped, the North stock representing the handle and the South stock the head of the club. Two and a half miles west and five miles northeast are two groups of smaller stocks, isolated from the main masses but of the same general rock type. This discussion is limited for the most part to the North and South stocks. At the north end, where the intrusion is about 3200 ft wide, the walls are about parallel and dip very steeply west. At the south end, where the mass is about 7000 ft wide at surface, the walls dip away from each other at moderately steep angles. An aeromagnetic survey' detects and outlines with surprising accuracy the two main stocks. as illustrated on the magnetic contour map (Fig. 2). Of particular interest is the location and shape of the magnetic anomaly representing the South stock. The anomaly is centered over the south end of the outcrop, and a westerly extension joins it with a smaller anomaly over the Dago Peak stocks. The latter anomaly, likewise, is located over the south end of the isolated stocks. This pattern suggests the intrusion has greater extent at depth to the south and west. Though correlation between the Dago Peak stocks and the larger masses is suggested, the controversial aspects of the Dobson Pass fault, which separates the two areas, casts doubt on a correlation. Topographically the monzonite stocks are ignored by the drainage pattern indicating these rocks, and the invaded rocks of the Lower Belt Series react similarly to erosion. The drainage patterns of Nine Mile and Canyon creeks cut indiscriminately across the monzonite-Belt contact, resulting in both valleys and ridges in the southern end of the intrusion. Nine Mile Creek traverses diagonally the entire five-mile length of the stocks. The monzonite rocks of the intrusion are referred to locally as granite, but granite is rare and the rocks comprise a wide variety of types. Their characteristics, described in detail by F. L. Ransome and F. C. Calkins,' are summarized by P. J. Shenon.' The principal rock type is coarse-grained, light gray, porphoritic monzonite containing black crystals of hornblende. Remarks Of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General Superintendent, Albany And Rensselaer Iron And Steel Company., Troy N. Y. - In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances bearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill * The remarks of the participants in this debate have been written out by the speakers, and are here given without any attempt to retain the order of the dis¬cussion. While the report does not, therefore, preserve the vigor and spontaneity of the debate, it is believed that it gains in value by giving the matured views of the speakers. PLANS are underway for the annual meeting of AIME, to be held in New York, February 17 to 21. The technical program includes meetings of all divisions of all three branches, Mining, Metals, and Petroleum. The bulk of the technical sessions will be held at the Statler Hotel, and the annual banquet will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria, Wednesday evening, February 20. The technical program of the Mining Branch activities is included in this issue. While it is not complete in every detail, it shows general interest groupings as well as subjects to be discussed. The program for each division is shown separately to facilitate following the activities of these special interest groups. Then, after a full scale and possibly somewhat strenuous technical meeting, a post-meeting feature will appeal to many of the members. A restful cruise to Bermuda and Nassau is offered at special rates to AIME members and friends. The schedule is a 3:00 pm departure from New York on the Queen of Bermuda on Saturday, February 23; arrival at Bermuda at 7:00 am Monday, February 25; arrival at Nassau at noon, Wednesday, February 27; and the trip ending again in New York at 9:00 am, Saturday, March 1. Rates begin at $202.10 per person, with higher rates depending upon accomodations desired. The base rate includes outside room with private bath and all meals, as well as Federal, Bermuda and Nassau taxes. Reservations for the trip should be made immediately through Leon V. DURING the war years restrictions on travel, pressure of work, and the irregular arrival of technical literature from abroad combined to severely isolate Great Britain in a period of intense war expansion of the art and practice of mineral dressing. Many British technicians were fully occupied with the day-to-day problems of improvising substitutes as regular sources of supply failed. and with mastering the strange demands and working conditions of wartime. After a long day spent between ones laboratory and production work, the rest of the waking hours were often filled with fire watching or home guard patrol activities, substituting for a night-shift manager, or "resting" in a dugout while the bombs came down. There was no time for serious study of such technical literature as survived the Atlantic crossing.

These are exciting times for the coal mining community. Although the industry is in the middle of a healthy boom, there are strong forces tending to counteract or at least temper the rate of growth. There are many pushing and pulling factors of interest to mining people, and a few salient ones will be mentioned here. Primarily because of a tremendous demand for energy, a demand that can't be met by other fuels, the coal industry is in boomsville. Another contributing factor to this situation is the increased overseas demand for metallurgical coal. These demands are being counteracted by a lack of people, the lead-time required to develop new capacity and wildcat strikes, among other things.

PRESIDENT Edwin Ludlow and Secretary Bradley Stoughton made their first-trip of the year 1921 to visit Local Sections of the Institute, and talk over Institute interests and policies, during the early part of April. The main purpose of the trip, as usual, was to bring back to headquarters suggestions or comments on the Institute's work on the part of, members. The trip was made a brief, one by the necessity of remaining in New Fork until Apr. 1, and of the attendance of President Ludlow at a meeting of American Engineering Council and. the organization of a Philadelphia Section of the Institute in Philadelphia on Apr. 16.

TWO technical sessions, an excursion through the Midwest refinery and a smoker, marked the first day of the meeting of the Petroleum Division at Casper, Wyo., on Aug. 28. Ninety-nine members and guests registered and there was an excellent attendance at 'all functions. The -local committee under the general chairmanship of J. C. Lindsay, general manager of the Western Pipe Line Co., had made every possible arrangement for the convenience and comfort of the visiting members and the Program Committee under E. L. Estabrook, vice-chairman of the Petroleum Division, had brought together a most interesting series of technical, papers. The meeting centered mainly on the various features of the Salt Creek field but there were also contributions from the technology of production in California, the Mid-Continent, and the Texas fields. The opening session was called to order by Mr. Estabrook at the Townsend Hotel on Friday morning. The members and visitors were welcomed appropriately by Ex-Governor B. B. Brooks, president of the "Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, who recalled the changes that had taken place as Casper, a frontier cow town, became a thriving oil metropolis. F. Julius Fobs, chairman 'of the Petroleum Division, responded and then took the chair. He introduced H. Foster Bain, Secretary of the Institute, who expressed the regret of those members members who found it impossible to stop over en route to Salt Lake City and his own pleasure at meeting with the Division in the field. Following these introductory ceremonies the technical session began with a "Sketch of the Geological Formations of Central Wyoming," presented by J. G. Bartram of the Midwest staff. It was brief and to the point and contributed greatly to the easy under¬standing of the succeeding papers by those unfamiliar with the region. The talk was illustrated by a large scale columnar section -and a copy of the excellent, geological map of the State recently issued by the U. S. Geological Survey.

The Industrial Minerals div. has been forging ahead in formulating a program for the February Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. Several papers have been listed and more are being worked into the program. For the cement, lime and gypsum part of the sessions, papers on Gypsum in the Aircraft Industry, Geology of San Marcos Island Gypsum Deposit, and Status of New Dry Rotary Blast Hole Drills, are expected. The Chemical Raw Materials sessions will feature a symposium on potash, with 13 papers as the anticipated number to be presented. Airborne and Ground Magnetometer Work has been suggested. Eight papers have been set for Mining Geology, Four papers, Mining Phosphate Rock, Idaho Phosphorous, and Geology of Carlsbad Potash and Geology of Pearlite will be on the program. Sessions on Dimension stone and slate have been tentatively worked out with papers on Geologic Factors Affecting the Dimension Stone Industry of California, A Quarter Century of Granite Quarrying in Massachusetts, Rock Bursting and Other Geologic Problems in the Granite Quarries of Barre, Vt., Quarry Practices in the Indiana Building Stone Industry, Stratigraphy and Composition of the Salem Limestone, and Dimension Stone in the U. S. in 1952. The Rare Minerals Committee is aiming for six papers with two papers now definitely on the program.

IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

This paper records over twenty years' experience with the use of the Rheolaveur system in the United States, showing its ability to meet changing conditions caused by the dirtier mine output of present-day mechanical mining methods. Data are given on size ranges handled, number and capacity of units installed, maintenance experience, and operating results on two-product and three-product separations. IT is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the principles employed in the Rheolaveur system of fine-coal cleaning as these have been fully covered in the technical literature of the Institute."2 Rather, our purpose will be to record the highlights of over 20 years' experience in the United States with Rheolaveur fine-coal launders, which will indicate their capabilities and costs of cleaning and their adaptability to meet the changing conditions caused by present-day mechanical mining methods. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders are used in the United States to treat a wide variety of size ranges of fine coal, the coarsest being 1/2 in. to 0 and the finest about 1/8 in. to 0. In Europe feeds as coarse as 5/8 in. and as small as 1/2 mm (28-mesh) to 0 are being cleaned. The size ranges usually handled in this country are 3/8 to 1/4-in. round to 0. Thirty five units with a combined hourly feed capacity of 3200 tph have been installed in the United States. Individual units are cleaning as little as 25 tph, while others are cleaning as much as 200 tph. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders offer cleaning units of high capacity and are outstanding in requiring a minimum of building space per ton of input. Experience has shown that maintenance costs are low. Several installations were made in the Pittsburgh district from 1928 to 1930, and since that time operation has been largely two shifts per day. Minor repairs to liner plates and Rheo boxes have been required during the intervening years, but no major replacement of launders was required until 1947 and 1948. At one of these plants, launders operated for 17 years before they were replaced and during that period over 26,000,000 tons of —5/16-in. coal were cleaned. The effect of the much dirtier raw coal produced by mechanical loading of the Pittsburgh seam is shown by the following tests. The data in table I summarize the performance of a Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning hand-loaded raw coal. The —4-in. raw coal fed to the cleaning plant analyzed only 8.16 pct ash and 1.31 pct sulphur and contained 4.6 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. Two years later, in 1945, mechanically-loaded coal from the same mine was cleaned in the same plant. The feed, —4 in., then analyzed 20.10 pct ash and 1.53 pct sulphur and contained 20.2 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. The performance of the Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning this coal is given in table 11. It will be noted that the +48-mesh coal is cleaned almost as thoroughly as in table I. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders offer cleaning units of high capacity and are outstanding in requiring a minimum of building space per ton of input. Experience has shown that maintenance costs are low. Several installations were made in the Pittsburgh district from 1928 to 1930, and since that time operation has been largely two shifts per day. Minor repairs to liner plates and Rheo boxes have been required during the intervening years, but no major replacement of launders was required until 1947 and 1948. At one of these plants, launders operated for 17 years before they were replaced and during that period over 26,000,000 tons of —5/16-in. coal were cleaned. The effect of the much dirtier raw coal produced by mechanical loading of the Pittsburgh seam is shown by the following tests. The data in table I summarize the performance of a Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning hand-loaded raw coal. The —4-in. raw coal fed to the cleaning plant analyzed only 8.16 pct ash and 1.31 pct sulphur and contained 4.6 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. Two years later, in 1945, mechanically-loaded coal from the same mine was cleaned in the same plant. The feed, —4 in., then analyzed 20.10 pct ash and 1.53 pct sulphur and contained 20.2 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. The performance of the Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning this coal is given in table 11. It will be noted that the +48-mesh coal is cleaned almost as thoroughly as in table I. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11.
