ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO., HOUSTON, TEX. A mathematical model that represents the conduction heating of a rock formation of limited permeability is formulated. Heat is introduced by the injection of a hot condensing gas into horizontal fractures through the formation. The fractures are assumed to be equally spaced; the flow of fluid is linear. The model consists of three coupled partial differential equations and two functional relationships. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained by numerical procedures. Application of the model in predicting in situ heating of oil shale is illustrated with four sample cases. Influences of shale thermal diffusivity, fluid pressure in the fracture and fracture spacing upon heating rate are demonstrated. In all cases considered, several years were required to heat all the formation to 700F with 1,000F steam. Less than 32 per cent of the injected heat was utilized for heating the shale. To facilitate extensive calculations of this type, a set of seven dimension-less quantities are derived. With this dimensionless system, the effect of controllable parameters on economics can be explored. INTRODUCTION Vast deposits of hydrocarbons are contained in oil shale formations in the western United States and in other countries. These hydrocarbons, known as kerogen, are difficult to recover because they are immobile solids and because the rock formations in which they are found have very limited permeability. The kerogen can be converted through pyrolysis to recoverable liquids and gases if the formation temperature is elevated to the range 600 to 800F. To accomplish this heating, the formation might be artificially fractured and a hot fluid injected into the fractures. If the injection and production wells are vertical and the fractures horizontal, interwell communication will be established and the hot fluid will flow from an injection well to a production well. In this process, some of the heat in the fluid will be given up and conducted into the formation. Products of pyrolysis will flow from the heated rock matrix into the fractures and be produced, commingled with the injected fluid. The practicality of such a process is strongly influenced by the rate at which heat can be transferred from the hot fluids to the formation. An analysis of this heat conduction problem is the subject of this paper. Linear flow of a condensing gas through a set of horizontal, equally spaced fractures is considered. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained from numerical procedures. The analysis also applies to formations containing streaks of natural permeability instead of fractures. Heat flow problems similar to the one treated here have been studied by other workers. Thomas1 has solved a radial problem in which he considers the injection of a noncondensing gas into a single, horizontal fracture and approximates the temperature profile in the fracture by a step function. The solutions to other problems, which are less similar to the present problem than the one treated by Thomas, have been reviewed by Spillette.2 In addition to these mathematical studies, a field test of an in situ shale oil recovery process using hot natural gas as the injected fluid has been reported.3 The first part of this paper is concerned with the mathematical development of the problem. The differential equations, boundary conditions and functional relationships which describe the physical model are formulated and the equations are cast into finite difference form. The method of solution of the difference equations is discussed (Appendix B). The second part of this paper presents results computed for a typical oil shale formation for which steam at 1,000F is the injected fluid. This paper covers the practical aspects of economic analysis of mineral ventures and the application of a publicly available computer program. The paper touches briefly on the time value of money concepts and the phases of project evaluation. The most comprehensive port ion of the paper deal s with the requirements for economic evaluation, including capital expenditure categories, operating expenses, required geological and engineering data, and tax considerations. Highlights of the 1981 and 1982 tax laws are covered. A case study using the MINECO computer program will be used to illustrate the economic evaluation concepts developed. Guidelines and goals of sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation will be discussed and demonstrated on the MINECO example. The MINECO software system will be displayed as an example of a "user-friendly", interactive, and flexible computer tool available to the mining professional today.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite, and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in term of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance, and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder wed. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

Cb 3 Sn powders were hot-pressed to estahlish densi-fication conditions and assess the possible use of such compacts in multiphase structures with ceramic or magnetic inclusions. Superconducting transition temperatures, Tc, were measured as a function of powder particle size, pressing temperature, and second-phase admixtures. The highest transition temperatures were found in coarse powder (5 to 500 u) compacts and were only weakly depended on pressing temperatures up to 1200°C. Fine powders (below 5 p), however, both single-phase CbsSn and Cb3 Sn-composites, showed a stronger dependence on hot-pressing temperatures. While Al2 O3 phase admixtures did not affect T, much more, a Pronounced T, degradation was observed upon the addition of ferrimagnetic Fe2 Mno. 5 Zno.5 O4 powders. Likewise, critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2° K were lowered appreciably in the ferrite doped samples, whereas the neutral A1203 inclusiow gave slightly improved Jc values. MULTIPHASE structures in electronically active materials have recently gained in interest as pointed out by Galasso in a review article.' In superconductors the most widely reported group are eutectic alloys which have been mostly investigated with respect to the proximity effect.2"4 In addition, "artificial eu-tectics", for example in the form of mercury-vycor glass sponge5 or fine niobium wires imbedded in a copper matrix,= have been prepared to attain higher critical fields and critical current densities. The idea was to enhance flux pinning phenomena by second-phase inclusions or ho1es. 7 Flux pinning should also be possible by the introduction of insulator inclusions into a superconducting matrix. Ceramic-metal combinations are most easily produced by hot pressing (= pressure sintering), as it permits an almost unlimited selection of material combinations. Cb 3 Sn has been prepared by vapor phase growths or in the form of thin films. Large compacts must be sintered,1° however, and normally present difficulties. At temperatures below 1350°C insufficient densities are obtained and at higher temperatures the loss of tin due to dissociation upsets the stoichiometry. Hot pressing is a natural approach to circumvent the problems, since one can obtain satisfactory densities despite low sintering temperatures. This work was mostly concerned with establishing conditions to hot press Cb3 Sn and Cb3 Sn multiphase structures (= composites), because no data are presently available, and to evaluate these with respect to their transition temperatures. However, a few measurements on critical current densities were also carried out, in particular to assess the value of ferrimagnetic inclusions. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure involved the preparation of feed material and powders, hot pressing, and evaluation of the resulting ingots. As no attempts were made to synthesize Cb3Sn from the elements during hot pressing, feed material had to be produced. For this purpose, a stoichiometric Cb-Sn powder mixture was compacted into a 3-cm-diam ingot (80,000 psi) and then inserted into a quartz tube and evacuated. Rf heating was employed. Above the tin melting point (230°C) liquid tin was forced out of the ingot, but was pulled back by capillary action after approximately 0.5 hr of continuous pumping at 700°C. Thus, it appears that evacuation at this temperature caused desorption of impurity gas creating wetting surfaces which, later on, favored alloying at relatively low temperatures. After a presintering period of 17 hr at 800°C, the quartz tube was tipped off and sealed into another such larger-diameter tube which, in turn, was connected to a pump system. This configuration permitted a temperature treatment at 1400°C, carried out for 65 hr, without collapsing of the glass walls or unfavorable chemical interaction of Cb3Sn with the quartz. Coal washing assumed an important role in the mining industry of the Pacific Northwest long before washing practice became firmly established in the Appalachian field. A Scaife washer was operated in the state of Washington in 1887; and by 1927, the fist year for which complete statistics were compiled, nearly a third of the state's coal production was washed, in comparison with only about 5 pct for the country as a whole. Mechanical preparation was adopted in Alaska in 1922 in a plant constructed by the United States Navy at Chickaloon to provide bunker coal for naval forces operating in northern waters. Many of the coal beds mined in Washington and Alaska contained more impurities than those mined elsewhere, and this circumstance contributed to the early interest in mechanical cleaning. A much more important factor, however, was the inclination of the coal beds. With steeply pitching beds, hand sorting by the miner at the face is impossible; consequently, all material must be loaded and dealt with on the surface, just as is now proving the case with mechanical mining of flat beds. Thus "full-seam" mining afforded the same stimulus to the early development of coal washing in the Northwest that - it is providing under mechanization in the rest of the country today.

Methods of testing that locate such flaws without subjecting the specimen to possible, if not actual, destl-uction are few; x-ray examination, whether fluoroscopic or radiographic, is one. Hitherto, however, x-ray examination has been restricted to objects of nearly uniform thickness and regular outline; the inspection of such articles as those shown in Fig. 1 has been inconvenient and unsatisfactory. An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

The hydrogen reduction of Cr2O3 to chromium metal was found to be feasible at very low water-vapor concentrations, corresponding to dew points of -38° to -24°C, over a temperature range of 1130" to 1490°C. Hydrogen reduction under these conditions was predicted by the calculated equilibrium curves which also indicated that CrzOs is reduced directly to chromium without forming the intermediate oxide, CrO. This reduction path was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The percent reduction of Cr2O3 at each reaction temperature was constant with time, suggesting an inhibiting effect of water vapor. A small increase in the residual water-vapor concentration of a single temperature, 1490°C, strongly retarded the rate of reduction This effect was expressed by an empim'cal equation which indicated a direct relationship between "distance from equilibrium" and the rate of reduction. me effect of temperature over the range of 1130" to 1490°C was expressed in an Arvhenius plot of log rate vs reciprocal absolute temperature. From this curve the apparent enthalpy of activation was found to be 29,600 cal. Based on the hypothesis that the rate of reductiun is contvolled at the oxide-metal interface, an over-all rate equation consistent with the experimental data and the thery of absolute reaction rates was formulated. A simplification of this expression to an Arrhenius equation was justified by the overriding effect of temperature on the rate of reaction for the minimum water-vapor concentration range. MOST of the metals in Subgroup V1 of the periodic table can be prepared commercially by direct reduction of their oxides by hydrogen or carbon monoxide, at temperatures considerably below the melting points of both the metals and their oxides. Chromium is an exception, being generally reduced from its ore, Cr2O3 . FeO, by silicon in an electric arc furnace which operates above the melting point of the Fe-Cr alloy or above the melting point of chro- mium if a chromium oxide be the starting material. In reduction of chromium oxide by hydrogen, either reduction does not occur at all or the rate of reduction is extremely slow. Theoretical considerations based on the high, exothermic, free energy of formation of Cr2O3 compared to the oxides of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, would also suggest a slow rate of reaction and a high activation energy. Interest in the direct gaseous reduction of fine-powdered ores in fluidized beds was considered justification for examination of this reaction. In order to develop a basis for a continuing study of the commercial feasibility of the direct gaseous reduction of chromite, a study of the kinetics of the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen was undertaken. To the authors' knowledge no accurate kinetic data for this reaction have been obtained. Neither has an activation energy been determined nor has an attempt been made to establish a mechanism of reaction. LITERATURE Maier10 compared the data of I. Y. Granaat,6 H. von Wartenburg and S. Aoyama, and G. Grube and M. Flad7 with that derived from calorimetric and ther-modynamic properties for the equilibria for the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen. These results, plotted as the log of the equilibrium constant vs absolute temperature for the reduction of Cr2O3 and the intermediate oxide, CrO, to chromium, show agreement between the differently derived data. In both cases the equilibrium constants were extremely low. Maier showed that, over a temperature range of 1000° to 2000°K, Cr2O3 is more readily reducible than CrO. Granat assumed that CrO was preferentially formed from Cr2o3 above 1100°C. Grube and Flad's analysis of their reaction products in the 895" to 1000°C range indicated the coexistence of only Cr2O3 and chromium. The hydrogen reduction of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, shows that reduction of the higher oxide proceeds through all of the intermediate oxides before being reduced to the metal. Since evidence pointed to an anomaly in the reduction behavior of Cr2O3, the authors investigated the reduction path of Cr2Os.to chromium. This was done theoretically with more recently available free-energy data and experimentally by X-ray diffraction analysis. This work reinforces Maier's conclusion.

Although it was known some years ago at the Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65-mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. Earliest Use of Microscopic Examination of Tailings As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for microscopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral partieles or grains may be classified into scparate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain 110 other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are representel (the core may be of chalcopyrite, partially altered to boruite, these two minerals being cntirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite. The term a matte " is applied to smelting-products so extremely diverse in composition and physical properties that it appears impossible to devise any generic formula to represent, chemically, the manner in which the varied proportions of the almost unlimited possible constituents combine with each other. Mattes produced in copper-smelting, in distinction from those produced in smelting-operations in which the recovery of cop per is secondary to that of other metals, cover a narrower range in composition. The copper-content of such mattes vary from 20 to 80 per cent., and even this range is much smaller in general practice since it is found advantageous, when possible, to produce mattes with about 50 per cent. of copper in the first operation. Further, it is unusual that arsenic or antimony occurs in copper-ores in sufficient proportions to form arsenides or antimonides in such quantities that they will separate out from the furnace-products, as is common in lead-smelting. Generally, the mattes produced in copper-smelting are composed mainly of copper (usually greater than 35 per cent.), iron and sulphur, the remaining elements being usually in proportions sufficiently small to allow of their treatment as impuritiee, rather than as essential constituents of the mattes. In modern practice of smelting copper-ores in blast-furnaces the tendency is to approach pyritic smelting as nearly as possible, the furnaces being low and the air supplied being largely in excess of that required for complete combustion of the carbonaceous fuel. Hence, the atmosphere of the blast-furnace thus used is usually oxidizing or nearly neutral, and, as a consequence, the reduction of metallic iron that was a necessary evil of former practice is of unusual occurrence in operations where the main object is the recovery of copper. THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. UNTIL very recently the development of high temperature alloys has been strictly empirical. It is, in fact, a great tribute to the intuition, perseverance, and industry of the practicing metallurgists of this country and abroad that the amazing increases in gas turbine service temperature over the past 15 years have been achieved with so little fundamental knowledge. The result of this development has been the realization of successful but highly complex alloys possessing five, six, or more alloying elements and correspondingly complex microstructures. Within the last few years, considerable effort has been devoted to the identification of the secondary phases in these alloys and to the correlation of the presence or absence of such phases with alloy properties. Little attention, however, has been given the problem of identification of the mechanism (s) by which such phases enhance the properties of the alloy and especially to the assessment of the particular properties of the secondary phase (either in- trinsic or relative to the matrix phase) which are basically responsible for the improvement. Conceivable mechanisms which might apply include dispersion hardening and precipitation hardening. PETROLEUM is found in almost every province in Persia. On the northern frontier, along the southern shore of the Caspian Sea, it is found near Anzelli and Shakhtesar and gas at Khoremabad. Oil is also found at Gumush Tepe, northwest of Astrabad, on the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Further inland, to the south of Astrabad, oil is found at Schahkuh-i-balae, also on the margin of the Khorasan desert at Semnan, 115 mi. (35 m.) east of Teheran. Along the western frontier, from northwest to southeast, oil is encountered at Ouschachi, north of Lake Urumieh; in the province of Azerbaijan, at Zohab, Khanikin, and other places in the district of Kormanshah in the province, of Ardelan. Further south, in the province of Luristan, oil is found east of Mendeli and in the Pusht-i-kuh districts. Considerable quantities of oil are also obtained from Schuster, Maidan-i-Naphtun, Ram-Hormuz, Beheban, which are almost on a straight line, running northwest and southeast along the foothills of the Bakhtiari Mountains. At Ahwaz, in the province of Arabistan, oil has been found along another range of hills whose axis also lies in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Fars province, boring for oil has taken place at Daliki, and indications of oil are found at Kheri, Fasa, Darab, and other places. A gas show is also recorded at Kuhi-Sung-Atush in this province, 30 mi. (48 km.) east of Darab. In the south of Persia, oil is encountered on. Qishm Island, also at Ahmedi and other places north of Bunder Abbas. On the southeastern frontier, oil is found on the Sarhad range of hills. Thus, oil indications have been noted over a distance of approximately 1100 mi. along the western and 700 mi. along the northern frontiers of Persia.

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble copper from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metalliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land of which the surface is suitable for: agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar" method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will' be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

INTRODUCTION Cleaning fine coal sizes utilizing air currents in machines as the primary separating medium is called dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning. In 1947 approximately 18 million tons (16.38 million mt) of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines; in 1965, 25.4 million tons (23.1 14 million mt); but in 1975, only 7 million tons (6.37 million mt). Table 11-1 shows the tonnages cleaned of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States by various types of equipment from 1938-1963. Table 11-2 shows only tonnages cleaned by pneumatic methods from 1964-1975. The decrease in tonnage to approximately 7 million tons (6.3 million mt) is due to a higher moisture content in the mined coal and the greater difficulty in cleaning the coal by air. There also was a definite trend to load raw coal at the mines, especially the slack which is the most expensive to clean due to the dewatering and drying requirements. While there have not been any applications of pneumatic cleaning in the anthracite field, its use has not been fully explored. The same is true for lignite and subbituminous coals.
