THE OBJECT of this paper is twofold: (1) To analyze the forces that cause air bubbles to spread on mineral surfaces in the flotation process; and (2) To develop a rational expression that will serve as a criterion of the floatability of minerals, to the end that the efficiencies of various flotation reagents can be accurately compared. Heretofore, the subject of the spreading of air bubbles has been dismissed with the statement that the surfaces of minerals on which bubbles spread are water-repellent. Imperfect understanding of the forces involved has led to the use, hitherto, of various erroneous formulas for the calculation of the comparative effectiveness of flotation reagents.

Most of the early coal production in Tennessee was for iron-making, and here, contrary to the usual custom, coal was used in the early furnaces before charcoal was. There was no salt industry of any volume. A considerable quantity of the coal used in the state before the Civil War was brought down the Cumberland River from eastern Kentucky, and both Pittsburgh coal and coal from the river mines in Kentucky was brought up the Tennessee River. The Memphis market was supplied almost entirely by river from Pittsburgh seam mines until the end of the period. The available data did not permit the production by counties to be estimated. [ ]

The sixty-fifth Congress created a commission on classification and standardization of wages of Government employees consisting of three members of the Senate and three ex-members of the House of Representatives: The Chairman of the National Service Committee has been notified orally by the Vice-chairman that when said Commission reaches the consideration of engineers' salaries in the Government service, request will be made for assistance of Engineering Council. As it is probable that this request will be received prior to the June meeting of Council, it is recommended that action be authorized concerning the appointment of a suitable committee of Council to undertake this work.

RECENTLY seven Boy Scouts were chosen from all the troops in the United States for their all-around ability, excellence in' scouting, and special ability as writers. Two of the members of this selected group were sons of In-stitute members. In the accompanying illustration, Ber-nard Queneau, son of A. L. J. Queneau, of the U. S. Steel. Corp., can be seen at the extreme left, just behind Theo-dore Roosevelt, who is shaking hands with the boy next to. LEHIGH UNIVERSITY On April 25, the Mining and Geological Society of Lehigh University held a meeting and elected. the following officers for the college year 1918-1919: C. S. SCHUBERT, President, C. After a short business meeting the Society was favored by three interesting and instructive talks. Mr. C. A. Bonine spoke on the "U. S. Geological Survey" and showed a number of beautiful lantern slides; Mr. R. Rosenbaum read a paper on "Geodes;" and Prof. B. L. Miller presented a brief discussion on "War Minerals." H. STATISTICS just released by the American Society for Engineering Education and given in the table, show that the total current enrollment of 200,227 in the 220 engineering schools of the U. S. and Canada represents a gain of 9.8 pct over a year ago, while the mineral engineering enrollment in the U. S. of 9826 shows a gain of only 4 pct in that field. The spurt in the mineral group shown last year is thus slowed down to less than one half of that in the whole engineering student body. Last year, it was growing more rapidly than the whole engineering group.

Moisture sampling of uranium ore should coincide as nearly as possible with weighing of the lot represented by the sample. This requires care by the sampler since the sample must usually be taken as a grab from each truckload as dumped. Correct proportions of coarse and fine material are necessary. A sample of at least 10 lb should be collected, placed in an air tight container, and promptly taken to the moisture determination room. Further, the sample should be dried for a minimum of 24 hr or until there is no further apparent loss of weight at a temperature no greater than 110°C.

IKE'S amiable expression and apparent sincerity impressed AIME members as did the theme of his talk. Cautioning against the gradually increasing power of the federal government, he said: . . . "freedom as we know it is in no greater danger from without than it is from our own lack of understanding of this creeping paralysis from within." Next February, it will be three years since he uttered these words at Annual Meeting welcoming ceremonies, but the theme was oft repeated in his winning campaign. This brush with the exalted, brief though it was, makes Washington look friendlier to many AIME members than it has for years.

AS part of a continuing program of liquid metals research, the densities of liquid lead, tin, zinc, cadmium, and indium have been measured by a pycnometric method. The pycnometers are made of high-density graphite to the design illustrated in Fig. l(a). In pursuing this research program, emphasis has been placed on detailed experimental care. As a result, claims are made for densities accurate to within ± 0.05 pct over temperature ranges varying from about 100± to 200°C above the melting point. In the Lead Belt, these jigs treat a larger tonnage than any other type of concentrating machine, and produce tailing of a larger size. The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells.

According to the June 27 issue of Business Week, Rep. Kearns (R., Pa.) introduced a bill in Congress along lines suggested by the National Society of Professional Engineers, to amend the Taft-Hartley Act to permit scientific, technical, and professional groups to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with management-with the protection and support of the federal law. The article reports that the bill is opposed by a loosely knit group of professional and technical unions, the Engineers & Scientists of America. This group wants Taft-Hartley amended to make it an unfair labor practice for employers to discuss collective bargaining matters with professional organizations.

Vertical Section of Glacial Morainic Material, containing Angular Masses of Banded Sand. Observed June 29, 1887, about 14 English miles south of Hellesylt, at head of Stor Fjord, near Aalesund, Norway. The accompanying figure reproduces my sketch. The House Ways and Means Committee recently heard a bitter dispute over whether gasoline with lead is a worse pollutant than gasoline without lead. The lead industry is also squarely in the middle of this dispute for obvious reasons. Lead used in gasoline amounts to 270,000 tpy, or more than 254 of the annual total mined in the U.S. Few industries can face the loss of such a market without wondering how they are to stay in business. The lead industry picked up unexpected support in this dispute, however, when the AFL-CIO stepped up with outright opposition to the President's proposal to tax lead in gasoline.

ROLIN1 in 1961 published a phase diagram for the CaF2-Na3AIF6 system in which substantial (-20 wt pct) solid solubility of CaF2 in Na3A1F6 at the eutectic temperature (945°C) was indicated. The evidence was that the halt in cooling curves associated with the eutectic was lowered progressively on the Na3AlF6 side. H olm2 has recently confirmed the experimental fact, but attributes it to evaporation losses shifting the composition into the ternary NaF-CaF2-Na3A1F6 system with a consequent lowering of the eutectic temperature
