(written discussion*).-The appearance of Mr. Brokaw?s with-the chemical composition of "paraffin dirt" will be welcomed by oil geologists who have worked in the Gulf Coast district. It is to be hoped that it will lead to a discussion of the subject which will throw some light on the relation this peculiar substance bears to the occurrence of oil deposits. The problem of locating oil pools in advance of drilling is at the best a very intangible matter in the district along the Gulf Coast, and it is therefore desirable to make the most of any clew which may be of the least assistance to this end. Geologists have been familiar with "paraffin dirt" for a number of years, and have informally discussed its value as a surface indication of oil. But doubtless owing largely to the fact that they have been unable to define its exact composition, very little information has appeared in print on the subject. The presence of this baffling and somewhat indeterminate substance is now quite generally accepted as one of the most reliable indications of a gas seepage. The question is whether paraffin dirt necessarily indicates that the escaping gas is an emanation from an oil deposit, or whether it merely indicates that marsh gas (urethane) has here escaped from its source in "the abundant decomposing vegetation entombed in the sediments of the old Mississippi Embayment, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. The presence of this material has been relied upon to a great extent, both by oil producers and geologists, in the location of wildcat wells, since the discovery that it was associated with gas seepages. It is quite true that other surface indications were often present at such localities, but if, in addition, paraffin dirt could be found in the vicinity, this fact was accepted as the final justification for drilling a test well, despite the fact that no one seemed to understand its chemical composition or to know why it should be associated with oil. In fact, for a long time it has generally been accepted that the name is a misnomer, that very little, if any, paraffin is present in it, or, for that matter, any other known fraction of crude oil.

In June 1964 the Indiana Geological Survey discovered gypsum beds more than 10 ft thick in rocks of Devonian age in La Porte County, Ind. Although the extension of the Michigan Basin evaporites into northern Indiana has been recognized for some time, the gypsum beds have been regarded as either too thin or too deep for exploitation. Current Survey research, however, indicates that exploration by industry might find commercial deposits of gypsum less than 50 miles from Chicago. In four cores taken by the Survey within 1 sq mile in La Porte County, the maximum thickness of inter-bedded gypsum and anhydrite is 35.8 ft. Both gypsum and anhydrite beds contain irregular masses of limestone and dolomite that average a few inches in cross section and total about 20% of the rock by weight. The maximum thickness of gypsum in one minable unit verified by core is 12.5 ft, and its purity is 81.3%. Chloride content of the gypsum beds is less than 0.005%. Depth to the gypsum in La Porte County is 330 to 500 ft, about the same depth as the gypsum being mined in Martin County, Ind. In June 1964 the Indiana Geological Survey discovered gypsum deposits of probable commercial thickness near La Porte, Ind. (Fig. 1). This article presents preliminary data on the distribution, thickness, depth and chemical composition of the gypsum, the possible causes of gypsification, and economic considerations of immediate interest to industry. Because of the preliminary nature of the work, only a few geologic relationships concerning the genesis of the deposits will be mentioned. DEFINITIONS The following terms used throughout this article have been restricted to the following definitions: evaporites: anyydrite (CaSO4) or gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O). minable evaporites: any evaporite unit which may contain more than 80% evaporites, which is more than 10 ft thick, and which in places may be completely gypsified. PREVIOUS WORK The presence of gypsum and anhydrite in the Devonian rocks of northern Indiana has been recognized for at least 70 years1-4 and can be inferred from a number of reports on the geology of Michigan. Norris, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have had a little experience with gasoline locomotives and I want to indorse very strongly Mr. Hood's point with regard to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I think .the terrible danger is not fully realized. I was foolish enough some time ago, in investigating a gasoline locomotive, to attempt to walk out of the mine entry behind it, and for several days I felt very seriously the carbon monoxide effects. The use of gasoline locomotives ought to be confined to mine entries where there is a very large amount of air. One of the grave dangers is their great convenience and the temptation to run them into chambers for just a few moments to get a car or two. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently one of the great dangers is in the style of the gasoline engine. When my attention was. first directed to the type of gasoline locomotives which I saw in the foreign mines-France, Belgium, and Germany, I was most favorably impressed with them, and they have given no trouble on account of fumes, so far as I could learn. Large numbers of them were being used, but all were of small capacity, and of a kind in which the speed control is by a governor of the hit-or-miss type, the engine running continuously. Their power capacity was very low, if I remember correctly it was not over 4 or 5 h.p., but they were used under favorable conditions where the grades in the mines were slight, since the entries or tunnels bad a slight grade in favor of-the load, making about the same pull for the empties against the grade as for the load with the grade. I understand the hit-or-miss valve arrangement enables a setting that will give more perfect combustion than can be insured with the valve controlled by the operating man, as in the automobile type of valve and engine used in this country. Apparently the European type of locomotive does not have the capacity to permit use under the conditions existing in this country, where most of our entries or tunnels have variable grades and long heavy trips of mine cars are used.

DURING the past fifteen years there has been a great change in the methods of treating employ-ment and discharge throughout industry. Perhaps nowhere has this change come more abruptly than in the metal mining districts of the West. In 1909, when I went to work for the Phelps Dodge Corporation in Bisbee, their operations were roughly arranged accord-ing to shafts in seven divisions, each employing from 100 to 250 men underground, and the mechanical department employing some 250 men, mostly on the surface. The underground divisions were each in charge of a foreman who had under him a night foreman and from two to four shift bosses on' each of two shifts. These foremen reported to the underground superinten-dent and he in turn to the superintendent of the mine department. The mechanical department was in charge of the master mechanic who reported to the superintendent of the mine department. RUSTLING A JOB IN THE OLD DAYS It was customary for men seeking employment to "rustle" the division foreman at the shaft during the lunch hour or at the close of the day shift and the master mechanic at the shops. There was no real attempt at interviewing the applicants for underground work. They simply filed in and out of the foremen's office-50 to 150 strong-in ten or fifteen minutes. If the foreman needed men, and he generally did; to replace those that he and the shift bosses had removed during the morning, he picked out those he knew or strangers who took his' fancy. The former in many cases were chosen for negative reasons rather than positive. In selecting the latter, the foreman felt that if they failed to show ability promptly, he could replace them the next day, and often did so. Even if these foremen had been skilful and well trained in the art of selecting men, it would have been impossible under the pressure of other duties to exercise that skill and experience in so doing. The conditions in the mechani-cal department were little better. About all that can be said in favor of such a method was that with a sur-plus of labor it "got by." The labor shortage brought about by the war disclosed its fundamental weakness.

A FULL description of past mining conditions in eastern Kentucky coal mines with reference to the cause of coal bumps and the preventive methods was given by the writer in a previous paper.1 At that time the method had been tried for a period of 13 months, successfully. The method has been enlarged add carried on for over two years, and is still successful. Recapitulating briefly from the previous paper: The No. 3 mine of the Mary Helen Coal Corporation, Coalgood, Ky., operates in the Harlan seam, and is worked by a room-and-pillar method. Cover varies from 1200 to 2000 ft. and the immediate roof over the coal is a hard, massive, sand rock, estimated to be from 70 to 90 ft. thick. The average height of coal throughout the mine is 46 inches. The reason for adopting the method were that in this mine five men had been killed by coal bumps between 1931 and 1934; many other men had been injured and coal-cutting machines had been thrown from under the cut. The morale of the workmen was at a very low ebb. Many remedies had been tried in other mines troubled by coal bumps, one method being to leave chain and room pillars in every 500 ft., to serve a bumping block; the idea being that if a bump took place it would act on the pillars left in the gob. Another method adopted was to board up a pillar, leaving a small opening at the bottom sufficient for shoveling coal. In this system the idea was that if a bump did occur on the pillar, the boards would stop flying coal so that no one would be injured. Many other methods were tried and it is safe to say that each mine troubled by coal bumps tried various remedies, none of which proved effective. On considering all that had been attempted in an effort to eliminate coal bumps, and the information gained by experience of coal bumps in various mines, it was thought that a long face with gob support would eliminate the trouble. Accordingly, on Jan. 15, 1935, a long face was started with wood cribs on 20-ft. centers. When the former paper was written on this method, the long face had been brought back a distance

THE intense chemical weathering of geological materials in the tropical regions has produced soils that are very rich in their content of iron and aluminum oxides. These soils are commonly referred to as laterites. There is considerable confusion as to the definition of a laterite, since there are workers who consider it to be entirely a ferruginous horizon and others who insist that laterite must have a high content of free aluminum oxide. How¬ever, in general the former is the accepted definition. The indurated ferruginous clay was given the name "laterite" by Buchanan,' not because of its bricklike appearance but rather because bricks were cut from it and used as a building material. Many of the temples of India and Siam are built of this material. This term has come to mean to the geologist a material that includes hard masses of concretionary, cellular, pisolitic ironstones. The soil scientists have deviated from the original meaning of the word and their writings show very little respect for Buchanan's definition or an understanding of the ma¬terial described by him. Pendleton," a life-long student of tropical soils, has insisted that the term laterite be restricted to Buchanan's definition; namely, an alluvial horizon, largely of iron oxides, with a slaglike, cellular or pisolitic structure, and of such a degree of hardness that it may be quarried out and used for building construction. More recently DuPreez2 and Sherman" have eliminated from Buchanan's definition the requirement of a hardness for building construction purposes. In doing this they eliminate the lithological implications in favor of a description of a product, soil, which originates and is developed by pedogenic processes. The confusion of the definition of a laterite is made greater by workers who insist that it must contain bauxite of different degrees of purity. Many of the tropical soils are rich in aluminum oxides. It is natural for the workers who have studied these tropical soils to emphasize the importance of the hydrated aluminum oxides. Hollands reported that the alumina in a laterite existed as bauxite. Fermor3 insisted that a laterite must have a high content of aluminum oxide hydrate, and Fox,4 in 1923, made the suggestion that if a laterite contained enough hydrated aluminum oxide to be used as an aluminum

AFTER investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled; is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds' time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 194 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting.

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

The district of Catoree, San Luis Potosi, ranks among the first half-dozen silver-producing camps of Mexico. Mining has been more or less continuous there for 150 years. The large producing mines, Mapnni, Mazapil, Palomas, Musquiz, Minas Viejas, now for the most part idle or abandoned, are grouped around the head of two valleys: one, which drains to the west, falls 2000 ft. (610 m.) in 41/2 mi. (7.2 km.) between the main Catorce and the western foot of the range and is characterized by steep canon walls; the other, east of the main town of Catoree from which it is separated by a high divide, heads in a number of steep tributaries above the basin in which lies the town of Potrero and flows nearly north for 10 mi. (16 km.) to the northern base of the range; below Potrero, it has for the most part gently sloping valley walls and a broad valley floor. The Sierra Catorce is the highest range of the region, the summits reaching altitudes of over 11,000 ft. With the exception of a few cliffs of the erosion escarpment of the lower limestone and the canon walls below the main town of Catoree, which is the highest town in Mexico, the gently rounded slopes are characteristic of a maturely eroded mountain range composed of folded sedimentary rocks. As is usual in desert regions, the heavy-bedded limestones are the most resistant to crosivc forces. Folded into anticlines, they form the mountain ranges; and the intermontane valleys and basins, originally carved out of less resistant shales, clays, marls and sandstone?, are covered by debris forming a mantle with surface gradually rising upwards toward the hills. In time, the debris buries, in deposits formed from their own ruins, all but the highest summits of the original mountains: some of this region has already nearly reached this stage. Most of the debris is firmly cemented by calcium carbonate (caliche). Solution of the limestone by meteoric waters afforded the supply of lime carbonate, which has been redeposited upon evaporation of the waters as a cement binding the boulders, pebblcs, and finer detritus. According to tradition, the higher portions of the Sierra Catoree were forested with pines and cedars but none remain within the mining district, although cedar is found farther south in the range. INTRODUCTION A very important key to the success of an in-situ leach venture is proper choice of well field chemistry, in which type and concentration of oxidant plays a significant role. For proper design of well field and plant, an engineer must be able to estimate uranium production levels and their change with time. The rate controlling step in the uranium leach process is generally acknowledged to be the oxidation step (Goddard and Brosnahan, 1980; McKnight and Anthony, 1979; Mays, 1979). Uranium head grade is very dependent upon concentration of oxidant injected into the ore zone. If oxidant levels are too low, uranium production requirements will not be met; if levels ate too high, excess oxidant will be wasted in side reactions with gangue material and leach economics will suffer. To date, no reliable laboratory technique exists for generating data easily translatable to field conditions. Empirical correlations based upon lengthy field testing have been the major tools avail- able to the design engineer to date. During the past five years, FMC has developed lab- oratory techniques for studying uranium leach chemistry under conditions simulating as closely as possible the field situation. Both agitated batch and consolidated core leach procedures have been developed. Results of FMC agitated batch studies are described in detail in a companion paper (Carlson, et. al., 1980). This paper will focus on the technique developed for leaching consolidated undisturbed core under simulated down-hole conditions. Through use of a follow-up computer model (Winkley, 1980), generated data can be translated to expected field response, thus providing the design engineer with valuable information in a relatively short period of time. CHEMISTRY In addition to uranium (+4), other oxidant-consuming species present in uranium ore are iron sulfides and carbonaceous material. Iron sulfides are usually present in concentrations far exceeding those of the other two materials and, therefore, represent the major oxidant-consuming species present in uranium sandstone ore. Previous studies (Carlson, et. al., 1980) have shown that iron sulfides exist in both Texas and Wyoming ores as a mixture of pyrite and marcasite (FeSz); furthermore, uranium mineralization (existing as uraninite) was shown to exist as a fine granular material coating or imbedded in iron sulfide crystals and sand grains (i.e. quartz and feldspars). I have no beitation in saying, that if the students have been previously instructed in the theoretical part of thrir studies, by lectitras and practice during the winter, the plan would be an admirable one. Frorn the work you have done at our mines this spring, I feel sure that you would be perfectly competent to curry out your plan, and 1 shall gladly aid you in uny wny I can. " Yours, sincerely, The plan of the proposed summer school thus indorsed by Mr. Coxe was adopted by the trustees of Columbia College, and an appropriation of one thousand dollars, or so much thereof ss might be necessary, was voted for the experitneat. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the iden of the organization of the school and the work required of the stiudens. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into sqoade of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were aesigned to the qre of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. Half of the students worked in the morning and the other half in the atternoon, one squad at a time with each miner, The times of going and coming to and from work were so arranged that each student spent four to four and a half hours in the mine each day. R.G.K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que. Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

Included in the general category of clays is a large and varied assemblage of nonmetallic silicate minerals which characteristically occur as fine-grained particles having flaky, sheetlike, or rod-shaped form. Most, though not all, are hydrous aluminum silicates. Amount and kind of impurities vary greatly, and these strongly influence the uses of the various clay types. Clays occur in a wide range of geological situations: as bedded sedimentary deposits composed of the weathering products of feldspar and other minerals; as alteration products of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks weathered or hydrothermally altered in place; and, to a more limited extent, as hydrothermally introduced materials. TYPES AND MARKETS On the basis of chemical composition and crystal structure, two major groups of clay minerals recognized are the "kandites" or kaolin group, and the "smectites" or montmorillonite group. Another major type is illite, particularly important as a constituent of shales. Two additional mineral species having economic importance are attapulgite (palygorskite) and sepiolite. For present purposes, however, a classification based on utilization is more appropriate. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recognizes six types of clay: kaolin, ball clay, fire clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and miscellaneous clay. Kaolin The kaolin group of minerals consists of the mineral species kaolinite, halloysite (metahalloysite), dickite, and nacrite, although the latter two are not being produced commercially. Kaolin, also called china clay, is a high-purity white material. Perhaps it is best known as a principal ingredient in the manufacture of chinaware, porcelain, and other high-quality ceramic products. However, by the mid-1970s very close to 50% of the kaolin produced in the United States was going to the paper industry for use as a filler and coating material. Manufacture of refractories uses about 12% of U.S. production. Kaolin is also used in plastics, in the rubber industry as a filler in footwear, electrical cable, and similar products, and as a conditioner of rubber for automobile tires to add strength and abrasion resistance. Smaller amounts are used in printing ink, paint, and adhesives; as insecticide carriers; in the production of catalysts for the petroleum refining industry; and in many other industrial and commercial applications. Production and use of kaolin in the United States doubled in the ten years from 1946 to 1956, and doubled again by 1966. Growth continues at a rate of about 7 % per annum.

The original Dorrance breaker of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. was erected in 1883. The coal beds were clean and dry, consequently a dry preparation system was used, consisting of revolving cylindrical screens for sizing and hand-picking, to remove the few impurities from the run of mine coal. The picking or cleaning room contained long parallel rows of chutes with seats mounted on them, for the use of the breaker boy, who bent over the chute and picked out the refuse material from the coal as it gravitated down the chute. The introduction of dry mechanical pickers, of, the sliding frictional type, in the early nineties lessened the number of boys, but hand-cleaning on the coal and refuse discharge ends of the mechanical picker was necessary. The Pardee spiral pickers, which were brought out about 1900, were better than the gravity pickers and gradually replaced them. In 1912 the breaker was entirely remodeled, although the original frame was retained. The revolving screens were replaced by shaking screens, and Pardee spirals were installed on all sizes of coal from egg to pea coal, inclusive. Hand-picking still was necessary on the coal and refuse ends of the spirals, although the changes did result in a reduction of the former breaker force. As mining advanced, and the thick clean bed became exhausted, it was necessary to mine veins containing a high percentage of impurities, which complicated the preparation problem. The most serious difficulty was the increase in the quantity of damp or wet run of mine, which could not be fully cleaned on the spirals. When this quantity exceeded approximately 5 per cent. of the feed, it was necessary to send the excess of the wet coal to the company's Prospect colliery for wet washing. This plan worked well for a time, but as the amount approached 15 per cent., with the prospect of a further increase, the company considered the building of a wet-washing plant. The Dorrance breaker was the only dry-cleaning plant operated by the company. At the seventeen other collieries, wet washing was employed, and jigs, both plunger and pan, were used. All the practical methods used in the anthracite fields were investigated, and it was finally decided to adopt the Rheolaveur system. THE Institute of Metals Division opened its series of meetings by a session* on lead, R. S. Dean be-ing in the chair and G. 0. Hiers acting as vice-chairman. A large and representative audience listened to the papers in the abstract and contributed an inter-esting and fruitful discussion. The main points of these papers and discussion are given below: In the absence of Carl E. Swartz, the summary and conclusions of his paper, "A Study of the Lead-Tin-Cadmium System with Reference to Their Use as Solders," were read. Swartz investigated a number of alloys in the lead-tin-cadmium system and prepared a diagram representing the solidification ranges of these alloys. He also made tensile strength tests of joints made with these alloys, and compared these with joints made with ordinary lead-tin solder. The tests showed solders containing cadmium were equally strong as the lead-tin series and that the cadmium alloys were suit-able in other respects for use as solders. In general, solders of the composition near to the ternary lead-tin-cadmium eutectic appeared to be the best for most soldering work although compositions widely differing are desirable for special purposes. The lead-tin-cad-mium solders are finding a market particularly in the fields requiring lower solidification temperatures than common solders. Mr. Darby opened the discussion and asked whether it was a fact that the lead-tin-cadmium solders were more useful than ordinary solders on galvanized and tin-plated sheet. C. Smith said he thought it to be a fact that galvanized sheet was more easily soldered by the lead-tin-cadmium solders than common lead-tin-solder. Continuing, Mr. Smith showed lantern slides of his own investigation of the thermal diagram and recommended the 70 per cent lead, 20 per cent cadmium, and 10 per cent tin for general employment. He thought the author did not differentiate between wetting and alloying and pointed out that wetting was more a ques-tion of the flux than the metal. In some cases a definite alloy was formed by soldering and in some no evidences of alloying were found. Illustrating the former case he showed slides and demonstrated that failures always took place longitudinal with the brittle compound alloy and transversely across the solder itself.

The work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permancnt value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions." Report on the Doncaster Area The Commission submitted an interim report at the end of 1925, which referred solely to one area, usually spoken of as the Doncaster area, and recommended that a Commission of a more technical character be appointed to investigate this particular case. This recommendation was acted upon, and the Commission thus appointed reported early in 1928. Here it is necessary only to indicate the nature of the special problem that had to be solved, the proposed solution being mainly of local interest. The Doncaster area consists of about 330 sq. miles of low-lying land in the southeasterly portion of Yorkshire and adjoining parts of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. No less than 78 per cent, of this land lies below the 25-ft. contour line, and a good deal is even below high-water level. It includes a large tract of land known as Hatfield Chase, swampy ground which has always been a source of trouble on that account, so much so that in 1626 a Dutchman, Cornelius Vermuyden, was called in by King Charles I to devise and execute schemes of drainage for its reclamation. THE plan of organizing a summer class of students of the School of Mines, for the practical study of mining and miner's work, received at the outset the following cordial indorsement : I have thought over the plan proposed by you of taking the students to the mines during the summer, and of having them actually take part, under the direction of skilled workmen, in all the various kinds of mining work; and of using them as a carps of engineers to make Inside and outside surveys, particularly with a view to the detailed study of the geology of the mine. I have no hesitation in saying, that if the students have been previously instructed in the theoretical part of their studies, by lectures and practice during the winter, the plan would be an admirable one. Of course experience will suggest modifications of detail. From the work you have done at our mines this spring, I feel sure that you would be perfectly competent to carry out your plan, and I shall gladly aid you in any way I can. "Yours, sincerely, T. B. Coxe." The plan of the proposed summer school thus indorsed by Mr. Coxe was adopted by the trustees of Columbia College, and an appropriation of one thousand dollars, or so much thereof as might be necessary, was voted for the experiment. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that. year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of August 11, 1877, will give an idea of the 'organization of the school and the work required of the students. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into squads of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were assigned to the Care of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. Half of the students worked in the morning and the other half in the afternoon, one squad at a time with each miner. The times of going and coming to and from work were so arranged that each student spent four to four and a half hours in the mine each day. The fluid level maintained in wells pumped for oil is an important factor in deter-mining their productivity but one that has received little attention in the literature relating to petroleum-production technology. In the present paper the writer undertakes to show how and to what extent fluid level influences productivity and suggests the use of a fluid level indicator as an aid to the oil producer in maintaining the fluid surface within the well at the proper position. IT is realized that the depth of fluid maintained in a pumping well is sometimes influenced by other considerations than the quantity of fluid that will enter the well: the prevention of sand incursion, prevention of waste of natural gas, and the maintenance of a suitable submergence for the pump, for example. These latter factors have an important influence on the productivity of the well, so that otherwise unwarranted fluid levels must sometimes be maintained to offset them; but where the handling of unconsolidated sands is not a problem of consequence and where water has been properly excluded, the principles developed here and the practices recommended, should apply. The principal objective of the producer should be to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the shortest possible time. Any method or equipment that will increase the rate of production during the early years of the life of the well, when gas pressure is high, will greatly augment the .ultimate production. The maintenance of a proper fluid level in the well at all times will go far toward accomplishing this desired result. For a given set of conditions surrounding the flow of oil into a particular well, in which the viscosity of the oil, the porosity and grain size, of the sand, and the diameter of the well appear as constants, two variables determine the quantity of oil that will flow from the sand into the well. These are: the effective pressure behind or within the oil in the reservoir sand, and the fluid level maintained within the well.. The former is the expulsive force that causes movement of oil from the sand into the well, while the latter determines the magnitude of a resisting force opposing such movement. The first of these factors is largely beyond the control of the oil producer, but it is in his interest to reduce the opposing force to the lowest economic limit.

The United States aims to achieve some modicum of energy self-sufficiency through means such as conservation, increased domestic oil and gas production, substitution by the electric utilities of coal or coaloil mixtures for oil and gas, and development of a viable synthetic liquid fuels industry. Coal's role in attaining this goal will necessitate doubling coal production by the end of the 1980's. And if the United States does in fact become the World's Saudi Arabia of coal, the total annual production to meet these domestic needs and export markets could double again by the year 2,000. As only a small portion of our Nation's reserves are recoverable by state-of-the-art surface mining methods, most of the coal produced in the future will have to be mined underground (Averitt, 1975). But this projected increase in coal demand is occurring in the face of a decade of radically decreasing productivity. Specifically, average worker productivity in underground coal mines has decreased from 14.2 tonnes (metric tons) per workershift in 1969 to 7.2 tonnes per worker-shift in 1979; and 95 percent of coal produced underground during this period was produced by room-and-pillar methods (U.S. Dept. of Energy, 1980). Although there is no complete agreement on the impact of recent Federal legislation, there is strong correlation between the dramatic decrease in productivity in underground coal mining and the implementation of the recent Federal mine health and safety regulations (U.S. Congress, 1969). A review of the wide range of coal mining research, development, and demonstration projects currently being funded by the federal government and by industry gives little encouragement for increasing worker productivity on room-and-pillar sections underground in the immediate future (Palowitch, 1978). Conversely, the opportunities for increasing production/productivity underground with longwall methods appear somewhat more encouraging. Although at least one longwall face in the U.S. did produce more than one million tonnes of coal in a single year, the national two-shift average production from one hundred or so longwall faces is about 1,000 tonnes per day (Huwood-Irwin Co., 1978 and Consolidation Coal Company, 1976). Clearly, there exists some real opportunities for improvement. One of these opportunities is to automate the cutter-loader.

THE Coalinga oil field is located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, California. The structure is in general a monocline, the edges of the oil horizon resting on the foot hills and dipping gently toward the east. One prominent anticline occurs plunging southeast. The earlier drilling was done in the foot hills comparatively near the outcrop and the wells were shallow. The sands were followed eastward and, in the case of the anticline, along the plunge, the wells becoming deeper and deeper until the depth of 4,000 ft. was reached and passed. There is nothing to show that the oil will not be found in quantity at still greater depth. In fact, some of the best producers have tapped the sand at close to 4,000 ft. The recovery of oil still farther to the east, and therefore at greater depth, seems to be mainly a question of drilling. In this territory the formations drilled through are chiefly sands and shales; they will not "stand up" in an open drilling hole; the casing has to be carried close to the bit, and it is always difficult to keep the casing free for any considerable distance. Ability to carry casing of comparatively large diameter without conductor pipes for distances of 2,000 or 3,000 ft. or over is desirable in such territory chiefly for two reasons. It makes it possible to enter the oil sand with a pipe of ample diameter; it eliminates one or more expensive strings of casing which act only as conductors for the water string, and furthermore, in territory where waters are encountered which corrode steel rapidly, it makes possible the construction of a rust- and alkali-resisting water string. It is always desirable to shut off top waters, which may lie within 100 ft. or less of the oil sand, with 10-in. pipe. Where the depth is so great that a practical weight of 10-in. pipe will not withstand the probable collapsing pressures, 8 ¼ in. at least is desirable. About the limit of rotary drilling to date in California seems to be the setting of the 10-in. string at 3,200 ft., although the rapid advance in rotary work during the past year seems to indicate that this depth may soon be increased. It is my purpose now, however, to treat only of cable-tool drilling.
