A detailed treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located near a linear discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility, and porosity are uniform, but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. These results generalize previously published works which assumed the permeability ratio for media on different sides of the discontinuity was zero, one, or infinity. One application of this material would be to facilitate detection of facies changes or fluid-fluid contacts by transient testing. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables examined includes dimensionless time from 0.1 to 100, rnohility ratio from 0.001 to 1000 and specific compressibility ratio from 0.001 to 1000. For dimensionless tinze less than 0.4, the pressure behavior is essentially that of a well in an infinite reservoir. Thus, reservoir properties near the well may be estimated in the usual manner. Using an overlay technique to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves, it is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time , at which a match occurs into the equation where is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Because of both the complexity of the solutions and limited computer facilities, well interference problems were not examined extensively. However, it was found that well interference may be masked by the discontinuity in some cases. By superposition of the results of constant rate fluid production, the problenz of pressure buildup may be treated. Such results show that for early shut-in times correct values for the transnzissibility are obtained from conventional semilog plotting. However, erroneous values of the static reservoir pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION Transient well testing has yielded estimates of such reservoir parameters as static reservoir pressure, permeability. porosity, and well bore effects. In most tests, it was assumed that the reservoirs were homogeneous and iso-tropic. Anisotropic media' and radial discontinuities were considered.'.' Various studies have been made on multiple-layer reservoirs." ' Linear discontinuities have been described for problems of one-dimensional flow.' In the present paper, a mathematical treatment is given for a well located near a linear discontinuity in an otherwise infinite medium (see Fig. 1). An actual reservoir analogy would be a well in a relatively thin reservoir near a fluid-fluid contact, or a well located in a reservoir exhibiting a sudden change in rock and formation characteristics, such as thickness, porosity, or permeability. A sudden change in porosity or permeability may be caused by clay fill or other types of facies changes. Sudden thickness changes niay be the result of such geological formations as buried shore lines and channel deposits. In otherwise uniform formations, a linear discontinuity may be caused by fluid-fluid interfaces such as oil-water contacts. 3s-oil contacts, or gas-water contacts.

Mineral wool is a term applied to man-made fibers of silicate glass with useful properties resulting from their fibrous nature. In contrast with crystalline fibrous minerals such as asbestos, mineral wool fibers are amorphous, solid filaments produced by drawing from molten liquid and subsequent cooling. Chemically they are silicate glass with varying percentages of metallic oxides, especially those of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, and in glass wool, sodium, potassium and boron. Other elements such as manganese, titanium, sulfur, etc., result from their presence in the raw materials used and are not purposely added. In the United States, mineral wool is a generic term and may be applied to rock, slag or glass wool. In Europe, glass silk and silicate cotton are products in the same category, but the term mineral wool is less commonly used. Current usage is to ignore the actual source and to differentiate products on a composition basis; thus rock and slag wools have about 35-45 pct of silica, while glass wool has 54 to 60 pct. Much mineral wool of slag origin is called "rock wool," and this practice is increasing, although wool made of slag from lead or copper refining is often referred to as "lead slag wool." Its greenish-gray to greenish-black dark color, due to 5-25 pct Fe (reported as FeO), distinguishes it from "white" wools made from iron, blast furnace slag containing only 1-2 pct FeO or Fe203. Most mineral wool is used for thermal insulation against heat and cold; sound absorption and isolation are probably the next most important uses. Both its thermal and acoustic values result primarily from the physical structure of the heterogeneous mixture of fibers and air which is the form in which the fibers are first obtained and handled. For this reason, within fairly wide limits, differences in chemical composition are relatively unimportant, and for most conventional applications all types are competitive in properties and value. Mineral wool intended for extreme conditions of high temperature, acid resistance and special purposes must have a chemical composition which will insure the desired properties. This may differ greatly from that of ordinary wools; for example one product approximately 98 pct Si02 and another consisting of 50 pct A1203 and 50 pct Si02 are produced and sold for high temperature service up to 2000°F or more. These are considerably more expensive to manufacture and their cost limits their use. Historical The manufacture of mineral wool consists fundamentally of a process which subjects molten material to shear and/or tensile forces that draw them into fibers. The liquids are cooled at a rate which solidifies them quickly. As a solid glass they are technically super-cooled liquids since they have no true melting point. The drawing out of glass into thin rods, filaments and tubes was known from very early times, and present day continuous production of glass filament for textiles was evolved gradually by adapting hand methods to automatic machinery. The development of texture in copper and brass (15 pct Zn by weight) rolled at room temperature and in copper rolled at -196°C has been followed by determination of pole figures for various degrees of reduction. The concurrent development in microstructure has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. For low deformations, the texture in brass, and in copper rolled at -196°C, is the same as the texture in copper rolled at room temperature. The difference in texture does not show until 50 pct reduction. At the same reduction at which the difference in texture appears, mechanical twinning starts in brass and low-temperature rolled copper. Nevertheless, Wassermann's twinning theory is found to be incompatible with the present resulls. All fcc metals and alloys develop, by heavy rolling, one or the other of two types of texture, classified for convenience as copper type and brass type, or possibly a '(mixed" texture representing an intermediate stage between the two types. The pure fcc metals, except silver, develop copper-type texture by rolling at room temperature. Silver and many alloys, including brass with more than 10 pct Zn, develop brass-type texture.' By rolling at low temperatures a transition in texture from copper type to brass type has been observed for copper of commercial purity.2'3 It is generally accepted that there is a correlation between the type of texture developed and the stacking fault energy. Metals and alloys having fcc structure develop brass-type texture when rolled at room temperature if the stacking fault energy is low, whereas those with higher stacking fault energies have copper-type texture.2 Thus, the difference in stacking fault energy must cause a difference in deformation mechanism responsible for the difference in texture. Of the numerous theories advanced concerning the nature of this difference in deformation mechanism, four seem to be of current interest. Smallman and Greeen,2 Dillamore and Roberts,4 and Dillamore5 refer to the fact that cross slip more easily takes place in a material with a higher stacking fault energy and suggest that the copper-type texture is developed by deformation with extensive cross slip whereas the brass-type texture is developed by deformation without cross slip. Haessner6 has advanced the theory that the copper-tye texture is developed by a combination of normal {111} slip and slip on other planes, mainly 1100). Thus his theory, like the theory above, proposes an additional deformation mode for the formation of the copper-type texture. Contrary to this, wassermann7 and Ahlborn et al.8 believe that the copper-type texture is obtained by normal slip. In their opinion mechanical twins will change a copper texture into a brass texture. For this reason it is suggested that the brass-type texture is developed when, in addition to normal {111}(110) slip, mechanical twinning is present. None of these theories are, however, supported by direct experimental evidence. In a recent experiment Hu et al.9 have followed the development of rolling texture in copper and brass. INTRODUCTION Although the economy in the Province of Saskatchewan has historically been agriculturally oriented, a major source of wealth has been realized through natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas, coal and uranium and since the 1960's - potash. Potash or potassium chloride, in the form in which it is presently produced in Saskatchewan, is used primarily as fertilizer, a source of potassium, one of three essential elements required for healthy plant growth, with about 5% of production sold to the chemical industry for use in such products as soap and liquid detergent, glass and ceramics, textiles and some pharmaceuticals. Saskatchewan is estimated to have approximately 40% of known world potash reserves and its ten active mines account for some 25% of annual world production. POTASH CORPORATION OF SASKATCHEWAN In an effort to guarantee a fair and lasting economic benefit to the Province of Saskatchewan, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was created on February 4, 1975 through an Order-in-Council under the Crown Corporation's Act and later on April 1, 1976, the Potash Corporation Act provided for its continuation. PCS was given the mandate to acquire ownership of a significant portion of the potash mining capacity in Saskatchewan and to establish an organization capable of operating the facilities, marketing the product, and conducting all of the other activities necessary for a successful corporation competing in the world potash industry. The corporation is the largest potash producing and selling organization in the Western World - or third largest in the world. (See also Figure 1). PCS through its wholly-owned subsidiary, PCS Mining, has acquired a whole or partial interest in five geographically distinct producing properties or divisions, representing today more than 40% of Saskatchewan's potash producing capacity. The acquisition of each division was followed by a program designed to exploit and maximize the particular opportunities at each minesite for increased production. To that end, PCS Mining has taken an active lead in expanding to meet future demand and has implemented expansion programs at all properties except for its Esterhazy Division where it has a long-term processing agreement with International Minerals & Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. Through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, PCS Mining, PCS Sales and PCS Transport, this provincial crown corporation has the ability to operate as a producer and marketer of Saskatchewan's potash. In certain instances PCS, the parent company, assists in the financing of various projects undertaken by the subsidiaries and in other cases the subsidiary involved arranges its own financing. POTASH RESERVES As a background to the specific issue of financing, it is helpful to describe briefly the nature of the deposit which supports the industry - our collateral, if you like. The potash beds underlying Saskatchewan are sedimentary rock deposits formed by the gradual evaporation of an inland sea during the Middle Devonian period roughly 400 million years ago. Now known as the Prairie Evaporite, this formation stretches from North Dakota and Northeast Montana through Southern Saskatchewan into North-Central Alberta. These beds lie at mining depths ranging from 950 - 1000m (3,000 ft) below the surface, where conventional mining methods can be used, and to 1,650m (5,000 ft), where solution mining must be

SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise seven classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members; 7. Junior Foreign Affiliates. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whose residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the. class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members. SEC. 3. Honorary Members: Each candidate for Honorary Membership must be recommended by at least ten Members and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of the Directors present; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members shall at no time exceed twenty. Such election shall automatically act as a transfer of such member from any other class of membership to which he may belong. SEC. 4. Senior Members: The Directors may, at the special request of any Member or Associate who has reached the age of seventy years and who has paid dues for thirty years, transfer such Member or Associate to the class of Senior Member; and in special cases may waive either the requirement as to age or as to the number of years for which dues have been paid. SEC. 5. Junior Members: A person to be eligible for election to the class of Junior Member must be qualified -through education or experience to hold a subordinate position in engineering, mining, metallurgical, geological or chemical work. He shall be not more than 33 years of age at the time of election. .SEC. 8. Associates: A person eligible for election or transfer into the class of Associate shall be one, who, in the opinion of the Committee on Admissions and the Board of Directors, is suitable for such election or transfer by reason of his interest in or connection with mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry. SEC. 7. Rocky Mountain Members: Membership in a special class of life memberships without annual or other dues and without right to receive the printed literature distributed to other members or the right and privilege of wearing the official badge of technical members, is given to all members of the Rocky Mountain Club at the time of consolidation. These special Rocky Mountain memberships shall be claimable by any member of the Rocky Mountain Club, not already a member of the Institute, availing himself of the privilege within ninety days after mailing of notice to him, by the Secretary of the Institute. Transmission electron microscopy techniques hare been used to study the spontaneous marfensite phase that forms during the thinning of Ti-Cr alloys. The structure of this phase has been found to differ. from the hcp martensite and has been identified as a clisforted fcc lattice. The spordaneous marlensile in this system is interpreted as a metastable isomorph of the equilibriunz TiCr, phase. WHEN thin-foil specimens for transmission electron microscopy were prepared from metastable alloys of the Ti-Cr system, a spontaneous transformation occurred' when the foils contained the untrans-formed 0 phase or two-phase mixtures of the 0 and w phases. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship that exists between the crystal structure of the spontaneous product and that of the matrix. The differences between the martensite transformation that occurs in the bulk material and the spontaneous reaction that occurs during the preparation of thin foils are compared with the observations that have been reported for similar phenomena in a commercial titanium alloy.' A spontaneous reaction that exhibits characteristics similar to a martensite transformation has been reported to occur in thin foils prepared from the retained metastable structures of several alloy systems.1'3"7 ~ull~ observed such a spontaneous reaction in 0 brass and attributed the apparent increase in the martensite transformation temperature to a decrease in the non-chemical free energy associated with bulk strain energy. He also showed that the spontaneous product did not have a specific habit plane, but that its orientation relationships to the parent matrix were dependen on the thickness of the transforming region. It has also been pointed out by Breedis6 that in thin films the absence of the constraints imposed by a bulk matrix can cause different requirements for the martensite plate interface and lattice distortion which is reflected bv a dependence of the transformation mechanism on the specimen geometry. In the case of the spontaneous reaction reported for Au-Zn alloys7 a definite habit plane was determined and shown to correspond with the habit plane calculated on the basis of the Bowles and Mackenzie crystallographic theory of the martensite transformation.'- lo EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of titanium alloys containing 5.5, 5.9, 6.4: 7.6, 8.0, 11.3, and 18.7 at. pct Cr were prepared from high-purity (iochrome) chromium and iodide-grade titanium by levitation melting. The experimental procedure used for sectioning the alloys and for thin-foil preparation has been reported in an earlier paper.' X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained using a 114-mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Cu-Ka radiation. In order to minimize fluorescent radiation from the specimen, a strip of aluminum foil 0.002 in. thick was placed in contact with the X-ray film. After a specimen was removed from the camera: an additional X-ray experiment was performed, to insure that no spurious lines were obtained due to the presence of the aluminum foil. The interstitial impurity analysis for the alloys used in this study was as follows: oxygen, 100 ppm: hydrogen, 30 ppm: nitrogen, 28 ppm. Late in 1942, the increasing demand for zinc, coupled with the growing shortage of miners and the knowledge that some abandoned mines would have to be reopened for prospecting and development, led to considerable thought as to the possibilities of further mechanization in order to conserve man power. The ore bodies, locally termed "sheet ground," are an important ore bed in some mines and are in the lower part of Boone formation of the Mississippian Series. Some mines contain interbedded layers of nearly pure galena and sphalerite in horizontal sheets ranging in thickness from a thin seam to several inches and is persistent over large areas. This type of ore body offered the best opportunity for study and experiments. The use of Jumbo drill carriers was advanced but some doubt was expressed as to the adaptability of Jumbos as then in use to mine headings as compared to post and arm mounting (Fig I). Another consideration was the introduction of truck haulage when several mines were trackless. A drill frame, built to carry 2 4-in. drifters, was mounted on a truck chassis. This design proved a failure as it was not rigid and the resiliency of the tires and springs allowed too much play. Long screw jacks were then used to hold the truck firmly in place, but placing the jacks and securing the truck required more effort and time than setting up post drills, so the truck carrier was abandoned. The use of a bull dozer underground had been under consideration for some time to be used in "brunoing" the broken dirt from behind pillars and other inaccessable places so the slusher drags could load without double dragging the dirt. A dozer with hydraulic blade lift was purchased and R. I. Tuthill, Superintendent of Section 30 Mines, suggested that a long drill arm be substituted for the blade, and the drills mounted on the cross member. The hydraulic lift would permit drilling holes at any required spacing. The "cat" was very mobile and answered the problem of a trackless mine. The initial tests showed that the "cat" would make a good carrier, but the hydraulic controls were not positive enough to keep the drills in alignment while drilling. The next step was to build a small hoist. This hoist was attached to the power take-off on the "cat" and by means of sheaves and a double line of 3/8-in. hoist cable, a positive control for raising and lowering the boom was obtained. To avoid serious injuries to the drillers should the cable break, a safety chain was fastened to the drill boom and hooked into a slot in the back of the "cat" frame. A different power unit was obtained for the "cat," as a state law prohibited the use of internal combustion engines in mines. A custom machine shop had just placed on the market a small hoist powered by a Model A Ford engine that had been very ingeniously converted to a slide valve engine using compressed air. Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO,), brucite (Mg[OH],) , dolomite (CaMg[CO,],), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe],- SiO,) , talc (H,Mg,[SiO,],) , and serpentine (H,Mg,Si,O,) . These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia- containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with sea-water or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombo- hedral carbonates which includes calcite (Ca- CO,) , siderite (FeCO,) , and rhodocrosite (MnCO,) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC0,-Cam, series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or "amorphous" (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellqw, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. The deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl onto amorphous substrates has been studied, with attention being paid to the specific effects of the physical and chemical nature of the substrate and to the effect of oxygen on the crystal morphology. With substrates having microscratches or etch lines, nu-cleation was observed to occur preferentially at these surface features. Flame polishing of the substrate surfaces was found to remove any regularity in preferred nucleation sites. Nucleation was observed to occur less readily on substrates having relatively low surface energies, e.g., Teflon and carbon, than on materials having relatively high surface energies such as fused silica. At low oxygen concentrations [Ni(CO)4/O2 > 54 x 1031, apparently pure and well-formed nickel crystals were observed to nucleate and grow irrespective of the presence of oxygen. At higher concentrations of oxygen, a secondary growth process, dependent upon oxygen concentration and resulting in a gradual change in crystal morphology, was observed. It is concluded that the influence of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel is determined by the relative kinetics of the various possible reactions, and that under the experimental conditions employed the 0-Ni interaction occurs at some nucleation or prenuclea-tion stage. THE purpose of the research on crystal nucleation in chemical vapor deposition as described in this paper has been twofold: 1) to examine some effects arising from the use of amorphous substrates, and 2) to study the specific effects of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel in a nickel carbonyl-carbon monoxide system. The nickel-nickel carbonyl system was chosen for study for several reasons: 1) nickel films are of potential interest in electronic technology, and 2) the deposition can be carried out at moderate temperatures, thus making possible detailed study of the processes occurring and the use of a variety of substrate materials (including some which melt at relatively low temperatures). Fairly well-characterized chemical kinetics and a broad background of information are available on the py-rolysis reactions and on the mechanisms of Ni-O interactions. NUCLEATION AND GROWTH THEORY The theoretical background for the analysis of nucleation and growth by vapor deposition for a one-component system (physical vapor deposition) and the problems encountered therein have been reviewed by Hirth and pound.' More recently Mande12 has indicated the difficulties of applying such theory to chemical systems. One of the major problems involved is the possible multiplicity of chemical reactions and deposition routes. For example, those reactions which are probably of significance in a discussion of the pyrolytic deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl under the conditions of the present experimental work are illustrated in Fig. 1. As is true with most cases of chemical deposition, many of the quantitative data necessary for a complete analysis of the system are either not available or not directly measurable. However, with the present system, sufficient data are available for a discussion of nucleation and growth on a qualitative basis. Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table 1), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term potash originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first US patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 27.5 Mt K20 produced in the world in 1980 (Searls, 1981) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K20, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1.0% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K2O). Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such deposits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in Table 1. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971). The structural basins within which marine evaporites occur are of two main types: (a) cratonic basins formed by broad epirogenic movements (for example, the Michigan Basin of the midwestern United States and the Permian Zechstein Basin of eastern Europe), and (b) grabens, commonly related to continental

Loose compacts of strained and annealed stainless-steel powders were sintered at various temperatures and times to determine the effect of residual strains on the sintering behavior. The atomized powders were prepared by annealing, ball milling, and rean-nealing. The residual strains and domain size were determined by a Fourier analysis of X-ray diffvaction dala. The specimens were prepared by siwzultaneously sintering cylinders of both strained and unstrained powder. The evaluation of the sintered compacts included density measurements, metallographic examinations, and analyses of X- ray diffraction data. The results of these studies reveal a definite increase in sintered density and sintering rate for the strained powders. THE pressure compacting of metal powders causes deformation of the particles, mechanical interlocking, and increased contact area. After the deformation, severe residual strains remain in these particles. The subsequent contributions of these strains to the sintering process have been considered to be negligible, since the recovery and recrystallization temperatures usually occur prior to the temperature required for the sintering process. Sintering is con-sidered to be the process by which the powders are transformed into solid compacts at temperatures below their melting points. The sintering operation for stainless steel usually takes place in the range of 2050" to 2400°F (0.84 to 0.95 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point or liquidus temperature) while the temperature required for recovery is approximately 1800°F (0.75 T,). However, it has been shown for several metal powders that densification becomes significant in the range of 0.35 to 0.45 T,.' It is the purpose of this study to determine what effect residual strains have upon the sintering behavior of stainless-steel compacts. Loose compacts were selected for study in order to isolate the strain contributions and eliminate the variables inherent in sintering of pressure-formed compacts. Additional variables were minimized by using only one mesh size, one composition, one particle shape, and also by simultaneously sintering both types of powder. Very little work has been carried out previous to the present study to delineate the effect of strains on sintering behavior. Lenel et 01.2 observed that residual stresses in copper compacts caused shrinkage at comparatively low temperatures. Delisle3 loose-sintered ball-milled electrolytic iron and observed that bonding among particles began at a lower temperature as compared to the behavior of annealed powder. Increased densification of ball-milled oxide powders has also been noted.4'5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Powder Preparation. The powder used for this study was a commercial-type 316L stainless steel made by the atomization process. A typical chemical analysis is: C- 0.025 pct Mo- 2.2 pct Cr-18.6 pct Ni-12.5 pct Fe—Balance The atomizing process is essentially the rapid freezing of liquid droplets. This nonequilibrium cooling causes coring to occur and two distinct phases are present within the solid particle, the austenitic phase and the ferritic phase. Due to the presence of this ferritic phase, the particles tended to fracture as well as become cold-worked during the subsequent ball-milling operation. The present and future activity of western coking coals is discussed. A general description of location, quantity, and quality is used as a basis for discussing development, mining, and marketing problems facing these reserves. As the need for coke from the West increases, solutions to the present mining and transportation problems will be forthcoming. Improved mining and blending technology, coupled with a more economical transportation solution, must precede a rapid development of the West's coke reserves. Ever increasing demands on coke production enhance the prospects of an accelerated development of these reserves.

The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam's characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated.

For the first time in four years the number of mineral engineering students in the 228 engineering colleges of the U. S. and Canada exceeds 10,000. According to figures just released by the American Society for Engineering Education, the current enrollment of all engineering students is 222,178. The total of 10,274 mineral engineering students, undergraduate and graduate, is a 4% pct increase over a year ago. Total engineering is 11 pct larger than last year, about the same as in 1949-50, and 24 pct above 1950-51.

It is believed that the data is a realistic appraisal of actual world geophysical activity.

Drucker in The Practice of Management said, "The ignorance of the function of management, of its work, of its standards and its responsibilities is one of the most serious weaknesses of an industrial society-and it is almost universal." The biggest need in mining today is for its managers to have a thorough understanding of the management control activity.

THE geophysical methods of exploration employed so extensively in mining and petroleum investigations are now being used in civil engineering. Requirements differ from those of mineral ex- ploration and therefore modified techniques have been developed. The civil engineer is primarily interested in the uppermost soil and rock strata. In highway engineering the materials affecting design and construction may be found within 15 or 20 ft of ground surface, and data on soils and rocks is seldom needed for more than a depth of 100 ft even for the heaviest structures.
