The methods for preparing operating cost estimates for a proposed mining venture are outlined. The procedures for estimating the direct and indirect operating cost for proposed mining and ore processing facilities are reviewed. Profits from the by-products are credits to the total operating cost, direct plus indirect, and are subtracted to obtain the total net operating cost. The non-operating costs which are a part of the total expenses are defined but are not considered in this manuscript. A method for developing the operating cost for a typical copper concentrator in the southwest is described in detail.

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-way, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a manmade force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps, direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. Later, during early mechanization in the 1920s, alternating current was also applied to loading machines at some mines. Use of dual electric systems then declined until fairly recently when

The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer. Vapor pressure of silver over silver-gold alloys has been measured over a range of temperatures for four compositions. Orifice effusion has been compared with electromotive force measurement as a means for determining thermodynamic activities in these solid metallic alloys. Correlated activity coefficients are given for silver-gold alloys for the temperature range 200' to 1000°C. SOUND development of a technique for the measurement of some property of matter requires a comparison with other recognized procedures which have been used to measure the same property. Such a check is especially useful if the assumptions on which the applications stand are basically different for the two methods. Agreement in the results tends to confirm both sets of assumptions. The electromotive force method for determining thermodynamic activities depends upon the reversibility of the electrode processes and a knowledge of the valence states involved. The orifice effusion technique of determining vapor pressures requires that certain mean free path conditions be met, that the state of association of the vapor be known, and that efficient collection of vapors be maintained. Thus the requirements are quite different in nature. Although procedures often exist by which the fulfillment of these conditions may be tested internally, agreement of thermodynamic activities for a single system obtained by both methods constitutes a more severe test of the assumptions. The processing of fine particles inevitably produces slimes. These present a dewatering problem, for which gravity thickening provides a partial or preliminary solution. The paper shows the effects of practical factors in carrying out laboratory sizing tests for thickeners. Several methods of determining thickener unit area have been compared for a lightly coagulated phosphate slurry and a highly flocculated kaolin slurry. Practical techniques of mixing and flocculant addition have significant effects on batch settling data. Pulp temperature and cylinder dimensions are very important. Errors in sizing thickeners for highly flocculated slurries by the standard methods are discussed. Such methods are suitable for less compressible slurries, however. Rules of thumb for flocculant selection are given.

Economic constraints require that the optimum mineral processing circuit be chosen for a given ore and then the circuit be optimized. Meloy (1983) developed a general methodology for finding the best circuit for a given ore. This analysis, however, did not specify a way to optimize the best circuit once it has been found. To optimize a given circuit, it is necessary to find the optimum set points for each unit operation in the circuit. Developed in this paper is a simple, general equation which, when applied, defines the optimum separation set point for the maximum mineral grade. This general equation, Equation (4), applies not only to simple ores, but also to complex ores containing variable and locked particles. Currently, the optimum set point can be calculated only for heavy media and cyclone circuits, because they are the only unit operations for which the necessary data has been measured.

The general properties of diffusion in GaAs are reviewed. A total of .fourteen atoms have been studied to date, and activation energies for eleven reported are (in ev): Ga (5.6), As (lo), Zn (2.49), Cd (2.43), Sn (2.5). Mn (2.75). S (4.0). Se (4.2). Ag (0.33), Cu (0.52). and Li (1.0). The dijfusion of the first eight atoms, as measured by Goldstein using radiotracer techniques, established the principle of sub lattice diffusion for both host and impurity atoms, since atoms substituting for gallium have lower activation energies than those substituting for arsenic. The diffusion constant of interstitial copper has been determined for the first time by Hall and Racette using heavily doped p-type samples in which interstitial copper predominates. The anomalous behavior of zinc, which has an abrupt diffusion front and a strong dependence on zinc concentration, has recently been quantitatively explained in terms of an interstitial-substi-tutional equilibrium-diffusion mechanism. Lithium and silver diffuse mainly interstitially, while the diffusion of phosphorus is complicated by the continual formation ofGap. Junction-migration measurements indicate diiferent results than radiotracer techniques, and this is one problem that still remains, together with discrepancies in cadmium-diffusion results, and an unexplained dependence of impurity diffusion on arsenic pressure. BESIDES the usual insights into the behavior of atoms in solids, studies of diffusion in semiconductors have additional importance for device applications. In fact, the amount of diffusion studies performed on a semiconductor might serve as a simple barometer of its technological importance. Thus, the information accumulated for GaAs is not yet quite comparable to that for germanium or silicon, but considerable knowledge is available. The diffusion of at least fourteen atoms has been investigated for GaAs, and the diffusion constants have been determined for eleven of these. Interesting results were found for GaAs that elucidated problems not previously solved for germanium or silicon. For example, the interstitial-diffusion constant for the very fast diffusant, copper, was first measured in GaAs. Also, solutions for interstitial-substitu-tional equilibrium diffusion in extrinsic material were provided first for GaAs, although they are ap- plicable to germanium, silicon, and other semiconductors. Studies in GaAs firmly established the concept of sublattice diffusion, which should have application in many different compound systems. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the general state of knowledge concerning diffusion in GaAs. First some general aspects of diffusion will be covered, and next attention will be given to the results mentioned above. Diffusion in GaAs has been measured both by radiotracer and junction-penetration techniques, and some discussion will be given of differences in the two sets of results. The comprehensive work of oldsteinl-' has served as the primary reference for the diffusion of well-behaved substitutional atoms in GaAs. Since a review has recently been presented of many of these reults, details of the diffusion data will not be repeated. Neither will any discussion be given of the experimental techniques of diffusion measurements, except to note here, in passing, the simplicity and effectiveness of the precision lapping device employed by Goldstein.' I) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A) Summary of Experimental Results. Diffusion constants D = Do exp(E/kT) have been determined for eleven atoms in GaAs: a,' AS,' n,'" Cd,'" n,' n,8 s, e,' Ag,O CU," and i." These results are summarized in Table I. In addition, diffusion was investigated for phosphorus,4'12 germanium,I3 and ilicon,' but Do and E were not determined. Radiotracer techniques were used for most of the studies except for lithium, where a combination of chemical and electrical techniques was employed, and germanium and silicon, where junction-migration techniques were applied. INTRODUCTION The equilibrium constants for methane and for water, and for ethane and water have been calculated from experimental data for the two binary systems.2,3,11,12 These constants are for the two-phase systems for the temperature range of 100" to 340°F and the pressure range of 200 to 10,000 psia. The constants for ethane are greater than those for methane. Equilibrium constants for a natural gas from a natural gas-water system6 are about the same as those for methane. Equilibrium constants for water in all three systems are very nearly the same over the greater part of the range of temperatures and pressures studied. In ideal solutions, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for a component should be the same in all such solutions at a given temperature and pressure.5 Few solutions are ideal, and consequently the use of generalized constants often leads to error in situations where they do not actually apply. In decidedly non-ideal systems, it is desirable to have equilibrium constant data for the specific system. Vaporization equilibrium constants may be calculated either by thermodynamic methods or from experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data. In the thermodynamic calculation. the equilibrium constant K may be shown to be" K = fP,/fl'..........(1) where fPi is the fugacity of the pure component i at the given temperature and at the vapor pressure of the pure component, and fp is the fugacity of pure i in the gaseous state at the temperature and total pressure of the system. At best the thermodynamic calculation results in a K applicable to ideal solutions. Equilibrium constants calculated from Equation (1) have been found to have only limited agreement with experimental values, even though the solutions for which they were calculated approached ideality."'" If the more volatile component is at a temperature above its critical, the accuracy of the equilibrium constant for the component is made more doubtful by the use of the vapor pressure term under such conditions. In order to make the thermodynamic calculation on a component above its critical temperature, one must resort to one of the empirical methods of extrapolation of the vapor pressure to conditions above its critical point.13 Application of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant then to the methane-water or the ethane-water systems would be risky since the systems are non-ideal, and the methane and ethane are above their critical in most petroleum operations. The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media has been solved numerically only for the case of linear or radially symmetric reservoirs. A recently introduced numerical method for solving the unsteady-state heat flow equation in two dimensions is applied to the calculation of the depletion of a square region containing a perfect gas. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimensionless parameters. The solutions are compared with published .solutions for radial reservoirs. I NTR ODUCTION The problem of unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media gives rise to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. Numerical approximations to solutions of the gas flow problem have been obtained by the stepwise solution of an associated difference equation1,2. However, the methods so far developed have required that the reservoir be either linear or radially symmetric. This restriction in shape has been necessary so that only two independent variables be considered, namely, one distance variable and time. In order to deal with reservoirs having more realistic shapes, it is necessary to develop numerical procedures for the solution of the gas flow problem involving two distance variables. A numerical procedure, denoted as the alternating-direction implicit method, for the solution of the heat-flow problem in two dimensions has recently been introduced" By the use of this procedure, approximate solutions have been obtained for heat-flow problems in a square8, and in regions having various non-rectangular boundariesa. Because of the similarity between the equation for heat conduction in solids and the equation for gas flow in porous media, it is reasonable to expect that the alternating-direction implicit method should also be useful for solving the gas flow problem in various two-dimensional regions. Solutions have been calculated for the simplest two-dimensional region, a square reservoir with a single well in the center. While reservoirs of such simple geometry seldom, if ever, exist, the solution of this problem is of some practical importance because it is also the solution of another problem, that of determining the depletion history about an individual well in an infinite uniform reservoir containing wells spaced throughout on a square lattice and producing equally from each well. Finally, it is of interest to compare solutions for a square reservoir with those for a circular reservoir and to determine the effect of the shape of the boundary for that particular case. Prior to 1934, published information covering expenditures by oil companies for properties, plant, and equipment and the residual investments in the various segments of the petroleum industry was not readily available. This paper presents an analysis of the funds invested by a selected group of oil companies during the years 1934 through 1942, based on an extensive study of the individual records of 30 oil companies. The sources, disposition, and characteristics of the capital employed by this group of companies are traced through a series of combined statements and appropriate charts, covering financial and operating data. The analysis of these statements not only constitutes a record useful for comparative purposes but also serves as a basis for a number of broad conclusions, as follows: 1. The petroleum industry generates the capital needed for its expansion almost entirely from its own operations and is therefore a singularly self-contained economic unit. 2. The long-term debt contained in the financial structure of the industry is small relative to the total capital employed, is less than the net working capital, and has increased but slightly during the period under review. 3. The capital expenditures of the group of 30 oil companies for 9 years amounted to 6.1 billion dollars, 58.3 per cent of which went into crude-oil producing facilities. The trend of this segment of expenditures has been downward since 1937. In 1942, expenditures for refining facilities increased sharply and for marketing facilities declined drastically. 4. The net working capital of the group increased 380 million dollars over the period, and the industry is in a favorable position of liquidity. The ratio of combined current assets to current liabilities was 3.21 at the close of the period. 5. The net income of the group displayed an upward trend for the period but with rather sharp cyclical fluctuations. 6. In 1942, Government funds entered the industry for the first time in substantial amounts and were utilized for the provision of war facilities needed for emergency use. 7. The group has paid out a relatively low percentage of net income in the form of dividends. For the period the average was 55 per cent of net income. 8. THE axial orientations of columnar crystals in unidirectionally solidified ingots of zone-refined zinc and tin have been examined using the techniques recently described by us.' Both metals had an initial purity of 99.999+ pct before zone refining and satisfied all qualitative guides for very high purity after zone refining. Fig. 1 presents the orientations of the columnar crystals for tin and zinc, respectively. For tin, there is a preference for grains growing in the [I101 direction, i.e., the dendrite direction.' For zinc, a weak preference for the [0001] direction is seen (a random population in the unit triangle would give equal density on either side of the 60-deg circle centered on [0001]).' There was no apparent evidence for dendritic growth in either metal. These results, and those previously reported,' confirm the recent investigation by Hellawell and Herbert of casting textures observed for zone-refined lead, zinc, and tin.4 The preferred casting orientations for these metals in both the impure and zone-refined states are given in Table I. In the experiments on zone-refined lead,' it was shown that two separate textures existed: a preferred (111) nucleation texture existed at the chill surface and a preferred (111) texture developed during solidification. Either effect is sufficient to produce the result recorded in Table I. Similarly the results recorded for tin and zinc may be attributable to either a preferred nucleation or a preferred growth phenomenon and additional experiments are required to separate these two possible explanations. Hellawell and Herbert' attribute their results to a preferred growth process and account for it on the basis of a "layer-growth" model proposed much earlier by one of the present authors.5 An equally satisfactory growth model would be that based upon anisotropic surface energies. However, both of these growth models would indicate that the preferred growth direction for very pure metals should be normal to the plane of closest packing in the metal. This is consistent for zinc but, contrary to the conclusion of Hellawell and Herbert, it is not consistent for tin since here the (100) is expected to exhibit a greater density of packing than the (110). Although tin is expected to exhibit an anisotropy of thermal conductivity, we would expect the thermal conductivity to be the same in the [1101 as the [l00]

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential, but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for converting a prospect into a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is usually headed by an engineer-promoter or an entrepreneur trader who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the ha1 operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

AMONG electrical manufacturers, interest in the outlook for copper supplies has not diminished despite signs of a healthier market following price decontrol. Reason: Electrical utility industry output is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6 pct for the next 15 years. A more graphic description of the growth ahead is given in the Eighth Quarterly Report of the Director of Defense Mobilization as follows: "Power generating capability, which amounted to 63 million kw at the time of Korea, now stands at more than 81 million. The established goal for installed capability at the end of 1955 is 116 million kw. Orders already on the books of power equipment manufacturers, if fulfilled on schedule, will bring installed capability to over 123 million kw by the end of 1956-and more orders for equipment are yet to come." These statistics portend an impressive requirement for copper, not only for power plants and distribution lines themselves but for the multitude of industry and domestic end-uses.

LKAB's ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of supergrade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. This product assays approximately 71.5% Fe and 0.20% SiO2. Potential exists for still further improvement. In recent years, the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.4% Fe and 0.30% SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high- purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1%.
