While great strides have been made in the machinery for mining rock on the surface of the land, comparable advances have not been made with underground equipment. In fact, excavation of underground openings has actually declined in importance. On the other hand, surface mines are getting deeper and approaching the economic limits at which they can be worked. In the face of these approaching limits and the added problem of escalating labor costs, James Boyd, President of Copper Range Corp. and AIME, has suggested that "science and engineering must come to grips with the need for making subsurface openings more quickly and cheaply.

An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution, particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. Laboratory and field testing of various squeeze cementing techniques and materials revealed that many improvements could be made in squeeze cementing operations. The use of a slow-pumping squeeze cementing procedure permitted the control of the quantity of cement displaced into a formation and aided in obtaining a high final squeeze pressure. Field testing indicated the desirability of obtaining high final squeeze pressures, the need for improved formation breakdown fluids, and the necessity of controlling the pressure differential during testing after a squeeze job. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, squeeze cementing operations have been investigated, both from the theoretical as well as the practical point of view, in an effort to arrive at some solution to the many and varied problems that arise with this type of operation. A review of well files indicated that in many instances, wells were being squeeze cemented four and five times before a satisfactory pressure buildup was obtained. There seemed to be considerable variation in opinion as to the proper method of squeeze cementing, as well as disagreement as to the proper breakdown agent, the quantity of cement that should be used, type retainer and length of WOC* time that was necessary. Consequently, it was deemed advisable to approach this problem theoretically, field testing each idea developed in hopes of eventually arriving at a squeeze cementing procedure that would give reasonable assurance of a successful job after one squeeze cementing operation. This investigation was. therefore, divided into two broad headings: (1) Preliminary studies, which include both theoretical and laboratory studies, and (2) Field investigations to determine the proper squeeze cementing methods. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Overburden Pressure Studies Squeeze cementing problems are so intimately related to the earth's overburden pressure that solutions to them are very difficult, if not impossible, without an understanding of the nature and magnitude of the overburden pressures encountered at the depths of producing wells. It was thus felt that the first approach to research on squeeze cementing should be made through a study of these pressures. Since there has been rather loose usage of a number of the terms related to overburden preasure by different writers, the terms to be subsequently used are defined here. Theoretical overburden pressure is the calculated pressure at any given depth exerted by the theoretical weight of overlying formations as calculated from the average rock density. Fluid displacement pressure is that pressure at which fluid can be injected into a formation after it has been broken down. It may be more or less than the theoretical overburden pressure. Formation breakdown pressure is that pressure at which a formation parts or breaks and is usually thought of as fluid displacement pressure plus rock strength. Breakdown agent is that fluid with which the formation is fractured. The first step in the study of the earth's overburden pressures involved a review of pertinent technical literature. The general opinion expressed was that the overburden pressure gradient of the earth's formations is roughly 1.0 psi per foot of depth, and that application of sufficient pressure to stratified formations. will cause them to part at or parallel to the bedding planes. The second step in the study of overburden pressures involved a study of available well data in an effort to obtain some definite information as to the actual values experienced in the field for the above mentioned terms. Data from 115 cement squeeze jobs in the Gulf Coast area and 46 cement squeeze jobs and acid jobs in the West Texas-New Mexico area were closely analyzed. THE B-Ni system was chosen for this study because of the great interest being shown in boron-fiber-strengthened composite materials. Boron fibers were obtained from Texaco Experiment, Inc. They average 4.2 mils in diam with a 0.5-mil tungsten wire in the center. In order to make the diffusion couple, the fibers were included in the nickel matrix by electroforming. The samples were placed in a preheated furnace for the desired temperature and length of time. Sectioning and polishing the samples revealed concentric rings as shown in Fig. 1. The average penetration distance, X, was calculated by measuring the radius of the second phase (the white shell in Fig. 1) and subtracting the original radius. The second phase was identified as NiB by X-ray diffraction. This allows the kinetics of the formation of the phase NiB to be calculated by Eq. [I], which is taken from Hoffman:"

The composition and properties of a new type of cementing mixture are discussed. In these compositions, API Class A or C cements are added to n stable water-in-oil emulsion instead of the crsual water. The cement disperses in the oil phase and remains out of contact with the water under normal conditions of mixing and storage. At higher temperatcrres, such as those encountered down-hole during placement, the emulsion breaks and cement hydration can then proceed. An extremely low filtration rate is obtained; the major part of the filtrate is oil. Thickening times of the mixture may be increased to meet the 18,000-ft casing cementing schedule by varying the amount of emzilsifier. As in conventional Portland cement mixtures, high-temperature strength retrogression can be overcome by addition of silica flour. Results of several field app1ication.r show that mixing presents no diffculty if emulsion blenders are used and the emulsion is prepared beforehand. INTRODUCTION Water-in-oil emulsions., in which oil is the continuous or external phase and in which water exists as discrete droplets, have for some time been used successfully in drilling muds to reduce filtration loss.1,2 Applied to cement slurries, the same results are obtained; i. e., the fluid-loss is greatly reduced. In addition, thickening times may be extended, lower densities and strengths obtained, and water-base borehole fluids more easily displaced without contamination of the cement. A low filtration rate is often a desirable property in oil well cements since loss of fluid increases placement difficulties and may also cause damage to water-sensitive producing formations.' In the casing cementing operation where the cement slurry is pumped into the narrow annulus between open hole and casing, rapid loss of fluid to a porous formation can cause the slurry to thicken and plug the annulus before the desired fill is obtained. Where a casing or a liner is cemented against a productive formation and the well completed through perforations, the fluid lost between the time the cement first contacts the formation and the time a set is obtained may invade the zone past the depth of the perforations. If the sand contains a material which will swell upon contact with cement filtrate, permanent damage may result. Previous methods for reducing the fluid-loss of cements have employed bentonite4 as an additive, usually with a lignosulfonate as a dispersant, or a derivative of some naturally occurring polymeric material such as cellulose ether." Oil emulsion cements have also been proposedv or fluid-loss reduction, but these have been of the oil-in-water type. Bentonite cements have been used most widely and have been successful in reducing incidence of premature setting of cement attributable to loss of water by filtration. It is the purpose of this paper to describe preparation and properties of a water-in-oil emulsion cement and to relate procedures followed and results obtained in several field applications. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM AND MECHANISMS A water-in-oil emulsion cement is prepared by adding an API Class A or C cement to a stable water-in-oil emulsion. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph of this emulsion before addition of cement. Here the droplets are water and the surrounding medium is diesel oil. High emulsion stability is indicated by the small droplet size [1-5 microns], and by their uniformity.' To form a stable water-in-oil emulsion as illustrated, several conditions must be met. A predominantly hydrophobic emulsifier must be present in sufficient concentration to produce a strong interfacial film; initially, the phase volume ratio (the water-to-oil ratio) must be low;

The operating behavior of liquid-solid cyclones is outlined, together with the nature and range of the process results obtainable, to serve as a background for engineers wishing to consider application of this new process tool. BY now most engineers are familiar with the liquid-solid or Dutch State Mines cyclone. However, it should be helpful to know exactly what it is that the equipment does and what its limits are. Without going into cyclone theory, this paper will describe the operating characteristics of Dutch State Mines cyclones. These are manufactured under license in this country and sold under the trade-marked name of DorrClone. The physical construction of the liquid-solid cyclone has been covered in many papers,'-' the DorrClone in particular being described in some detail by Weems. Fig. 1 shows the unit in cross-section. The feed enters at C. The coarse, heavy particles are thrown centrifugally to the periphery and make their way down the wall to the apex where their rate of discharge as underflow is controlled by an adjustable rubber apex valve. As the apex diameter is decreased the solids build up behind the valve, producing a denser underflow. Meanwhile the fine particles are swept into the upward flowing vortex stream which exits as overflow through the vortex finder, F. Flexibility to produce the specific result desired in a particular process is achieved by providing means for varying the areas of the entrance, vortex discharge, and apex discharge. The entrance area may be varied by insertion of special shims. Vortex discharge area may be changed by use of different-sized vortex finders which are interchangeable. Similarly, the different sizes of apex valves are interchangeable and in addition each apex valve is variable down to about 60 pct of its maximum diameter. A most significant primary distinction to make is that although liquid-solid cyclones have been sometimes called thickeners, they actually are classifiers, and very potent ones. They are almost never thickeners in the special sense that many metallurgical engineers understand the term. There would be no profit in quibbling over the definition of a word, but when the application of cyclones is considered, it will help to understand the difference be- tween two mechanisms, one of which will be called classification, and the other thickening. In what is called thickening the fine solid particles present in the feed hold together by surface attraction during the sedimentation process. The loose network of particles thus held together constrains all particles to settle at approximately the same rate, the larger ones dragging the smaller ones down. As a result, pulp settles with a sharp line of demarcation between solids and a relatively clear supernatant liquid. Essentially all the solids, regardless of their fineness, pass into the thickened underflow, and a clear overflow is separated. In classification, on the other hand, the interparti-cle forces are relatively insignificant as compared to the settling force on the individual particles, and are insufficient to prevent independent movement of the particles. The coarsest, heaviest particles settle most rapidly through the pulp, passing more slowly settling fines. Particles coarser than the mesh-of-separation essentially all settle into the underflow, but if the feed contains any particles finer than the mesh of separation, at least part of them will appear in the overflow. A clear supernatant or overflow can be obtained only if there are no undersize particles present in the feed. Thus it will be seen that classification is impossible under ideal thickening conditions. The finer particles are pulled down at essentially the same rate as coarser particles, and there is no separation on the basis of particle size. The surface attraction holding the particles together in a thickener is usually feeble. Whenever the sedimentation force on any particle is strong with respect to the interparticle forces, that particle can pass through the tenuous structure and settle independently. There are at least four ways of making the sedimentation force strong, with respect to the interparticle forces, and obtaining classification. First, and most obvious, the particles may be large and heavy. Thus coarse sands settle out in a beaker or Dorr thickener ahead of the rest of the thickening solids. Second, the interparticle forces may be altered by physicochemical means; i.e., it is often necessary to add dispersing agents to destroy the interparticle forces and permit classification to take place. Diffusionless transformation in Au-Cd single crystals containing about 50 atomic pet Cd was investigated by means of X-ray analysis of the orientation relationships, electrical resistivity measurements, and motion picture studies of the movement of boundaries between the new and old phases during transformation. The nucleation of diffusionless transformation by imperfections and the generation of imperfections by diffusionless transformation were discussed. THAT connections exist between plastic deformation and diffusionless phase changes has long been recognized. Thus it is often possible to produce a diffusionless phase change in a temperature range, above that in which the change occurs spontaneously, by cold-working the initial phase. Certain aspects of the dislocation theory of the plastic deformation of crystalline solids also provide for a rather direct connection between the processes involved in plastic deformation and in diffusionless phase changes. Heidenreich and Shockleyl have pointed out that simple edge dislocations in f.c.c. metals are probably unstable, and that the more probable lattice imperfections, called extended edge dislocations, consist of two half dislocations separated by a distance of the order of magnitude of 100A. The region about two atomic planes thick between the half dislocations because of this stacking fault may be described as having the hexagonal close-packed structure. Presumably the stacking faults observed by Barrett" fter cold-working f.c.c. Cu-Si alloys resulted from the passage of such half dislocations through the lattice of the initial phase. It is now becoming clear that the development of a detailed theory of the atomic movements involved in diffusionless phase changes will require a consideration of the role played by lattice imperfections, just as such considerations are necessary to the understanding of plastic deformation mechanisms. This point of view has been recently set forth, for example, by Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe3 who pointed out the role which might be played by screw dislocations in nucleating diffusionless phase changes. The present paper reports on some aspects of the diffusionless phase change in single crystals of the beta phase alloy Au-Cd which serve to emphasize further the importance of lattice imperfections in diffusionless phase changes. The diffusionless phase change of Au-Cd possesses several remarkable features. One of these is that the interface between the high-temperature beta phase and the low-temperature orthorhombic phase typically moves with a low velocity, in contrast to the behavior observed in the transformation of austenite to martensite. Motion pictures of this slow interface motion have been prepared in the course of the work reported here. Another important feature of the Au-Cd transformation is the small amount of undercooling observed. The reverse transformation occurs on reheating to a temperature only 20" higher than the transformation temperature observed on cooling, and under some circumstances the hysteresis observed is substantially less than this. This narrow temperature range between transformation on heating and cooling is presumably in part a consequence of the fact that the transformation requires a lattice shear of only about 3". Finally, the orthorhombic product phase possesses unusual mechanical properties, as was first pointed out by olander' and Benedicks." After completion of the transformation on cooling the specimen can be severely deformed, yet on the release of load it springs back to its original shape in a rubber-like manner. Explanation of this phenomenon will require an understanding of the lattice imperfections in the orthorhombic structure and, correspondingly, of those in the initial body-centered cubic structure. Single crystals of Au-Cd alloy containing 47.5 and 49.0 atomic pct Cd were prepared from fine gold (99.95 pct purity) and chemically pure cadmium (99.99 pct purity) by melting the alloy in an evacuated and sealed fused quartz tubing and growing into single-crystal form by the Bridgman method. The Au-Cd alloy containing 47.5 atomic pct Cd undergoes a diffusionless transformation from an ordered body-centered cubic structure to an orthorhombic structure when it is cooled to about 60°C, while the reverse transformation takes place when the alloy is heated to about 80°C, according to electrical resistivity studies. Many basic engineering principles of all four phases of mining operations, namely, prospecting, exploration, development, and exploitation, can be analyzed better in terms of quantitative geology. Geological data from both field and laboratory will also complement scientific methods now being developed. THE geological data emphasized so successfully in prospecting for new deposits, that is, structural controls, strength of solutions, and type of mineralization, are basically those required for successful exploitation. In the mining of newly discovered deposits the most economical methods should be employed as early as possible to keep the overall cost per unit produced at a minimum and to permit maximum extraction of valuable minerals. A crucial question is: How can geological data be translated into useful quantitative results which will aid in achieving this end? H. E. McKinistry' has suggested that a solution may be reached in one of two ways: 1—the usual approach, use of judgment based on experience; or 2—mathematical calculations and tests on models, both subject to certain limitations. He also suggests that in addition to better use of geology more case data and theoretical data are needed on which to base sound judgment. Further research, therefore, is necessary. Perhaps in this field the emphasis should be on more specialization in mining methods and ground movement by men with thorough training in physics, engineering, geology, and underground mining. These specialists would be equipped to point out the most economical and scientific methods of exploitation. Selection of a stoping method is governed by the amount and type of support a deposit will require in the process of being mined, or by the possibility of employing the structure of the deposit to advantage in mining the ore by a caving method. In addition to these factors there are others which almost invariably influence the choice of an economical method of mining:' 1—strength of ore and wall rocks; 2—shape, horizontal area, volume, and regularity of the boundaries of the orebody, and thickness, dip and/or pitch of the deposit and individual ore shoots; 3—grade, distribution of minerals, and continuity of the ore within the boundaries of the deposit; 4—depth below surface and nature of the capping or overburden: and 5—position of the de- posit relative to surface improvements, drainage, and other mine openings. In the final analysis it is usually necessary to disregard the less important of these factors to satisfy the requirements of the more important. Because of the variation of geological conditions throughout and surrounding the deposit, no mining method will be everywhere ideally applicable to the conditions encountered in one ore deposit. The immediate problem is to interpret the above physical characteristics of deposits in terms of geological characteristics. Very few quantitative geological data are available on the factors related to a choice of mining methods. However, there are many descriptive data in mining and geological literature which collectively show how important an effect details of geology have upon all phases of mining operations. The following categories of basic mining methods were investigated to establish the geological factors that have affected their successful application: 1— open stopes with pillars; 2—sublevel stoping; 3— shrinkage stoping; 4—cut-and-fill stoping; 5— square-set mining; 6—top slicing and sublevel caving; and 7—block caving. It should be noted that the first five of these methods are listed in the order of increasing support requirements. Mines were selected as examples only where geological descriptions were complete enough to warrant their use. A study of the geological factors involved in mining operations led to a choice of the following classifications, employed in Table I: 1—structural type of orebody; 2—dimensions (geometry); 3— country rock (type); 4—faulting, folding, and fracturing; 5—alteration of ore and rock; 6—type of mineralization; and 7—geological factors determining mining method (summary). Of these factors only one yielded results that can be defined from available data in a quantitative manner, i.e., dimensions of the deposit. These are the most reliable guides that can be used in selection of suitable mining methods. They are, in general, the properties of geologic structure most difficult to evaluate by studies of models, pho-toelastic studies, and other laboratory methods, all of which are at present more limited in their applications than the geologic method. This paper presents a method whereby the amount of misplaced material and the difficulty of the separation can be used to compare coal cleaning equipment of all types, from effectiveness and capacity standpoints. The correlations presented do not include all types of equipment currently available, but the method can be used to evaluate any make or type of coal cleaning equipment, both old and new. THE relative performance of coal washing equipment, or the effectiveness with which any type or make of equipment removes impurities from coal, has been most difficult to evaluate in the past. The most widely used yardstick is the Frazer and Yancey efficiency formula developed in 1922,' but Yancey in a later article states that "washers treating coals of different density composition or operating at different densities of separation cannot be compared directly on the basis of this criterion."' Prior to and since 1922, a variety of other methods has been used for comparison purposes, including the distribution curve, the error area, and the "ecart probable" or probable error. Yancey and Geer in discussing these methods conclude, "Performance can be evaluated in a number of different ways, with the choice of the proper method to use being dictated by the objectives of the investigation and the data available."' It is true that performance can be evaluated in a variety of ways, but if the equipment is to be evaluated on an effectiveness basis, there should be only one universal comparison method. Varying methods have been used because one universal comparison method has not been found or developed. In the article previously quoted, Yancey and Geer state in clear terms the primary concept for a universal comparison method: "One of the simplest, and certainly one of the most obvious evaluations of washery performance is the quantity of sink material in the washed coal and the float material in the refuse. If the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated, the sink in the washed coal and the float in the refuse represent material that has been misplaced." The quantity of misplaced material was used as a criterion of washery performance by Lincoln in 1913," by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1938,' by Hancock in 1947," and by the national French research agency Cerchar in recent years.' In 1950 Andersone proposed the use of this criterion as an efficiency value to replace the Frazer and Yancey formula. However, none of the above-mentioned investigators used the misplaced material concept in a manner that would provide universal coal-cleaning equipment comparisons. The Correlation Theory The ideal coal cleaning process would treat all sizes and would make a perfect separation at any given specific gravity. All material lower in density than the desired value would report in the coal product and all material higher in density would report in the refuse product. Unfortunately, no known cleaning process achieves this goal and there seems little likelihood that any process yet to be invented will do more than approach it. When coal is treated in volume under operating conditions, it is impossible to avoid mechanical entrapment, fluctuations in throughput and effective gravity of separation, and the creation of turbulent currents, even when a true heavy-liquid bath is used and the feed is closely sized and contains little intermediate gravity material. This being so, it is possible to appreciate the difficulties inherent in trying to obtain a perfect separation when treating a wide range of sizes and a feed containing high percentages of intermediate material, using turbulent currents to help create the effective separation gravity, under operating conditions which normally tend to be on the overload side. When coal is separated from refuse in any coal cleaning equipment, some refuse always reports to the coal and some coal to the refuse; the writer therefore assumed that there should be a relationship between the total amount of misplaced material produced by any given piece of equipment and the difficulty of separation as represented by the percentage of near gravity material in the feed. If the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated, the sink in the washed coal and the float in the refuse represent material that has been misplaced." The quantity of misplaced material was used as a criterion of washery performance by Lincoln in 1913," by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1938,' by Hancock in 1947," and by the national French research agency Cerchar in recent years.' In 1950 Andersone proposed the use of this criterion as an efficiency value to replace the Frazer and Yancey formula. However, none of the above-mentioned investigators used the misplaced material concept in a manner that would provide universal coal-cleaning equipment comparisons. The Correlation Theory The ideal coal cleaning process would treat all sizes and would make a perfect separation at any given specific gravity. All material lower in density than the desired value would report in the coal product and all material higher in density would report in the refuse product. Unfortunately, no known cleaning process achieves this goal and there seems little likelihood that any process yet to be invented will do more than approach it. When coal is treated in volume under operating conditions, it is impossible to avoid mechanical entrapment, fluctuations in throughput and effective gravity of separation, and the creation of turbulent currents, even when a true heavy-liquid bath is used and the feed is closely sized and contains little intermediate gravity material. This being so, it is possible to appreciate the difficulties inherent in trying to obtain a perfect separation when treating a wide range of sizes and a feed containing high percentages of intermediate material, using turbulent currents to help create the effective separation gravity, under operating conditions which normally tend to be on the overload side. When coal is separated from refuse in any coal cleaning equipment, some refuse always reports to the coal and some coal to the refuse; the writer therefore assumed that there should be a relationship between the total amount of misplaced material produced by any given piece of equipment and the difficulty of separation as represented by the percentage of near gravity material in the feed. If it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer's office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. Mr. Neilson was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city. In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company.

THE quantitative study of grain shape in three dimensions has been a difficult one from the practical standpoint. Experiments on grain shape have usually been based on indirect observations of two-dimensional metallographic samples or on grains separated by intergranular corrosion or fracture. The latter method was used in particular by Deschl in 1919 in observing the shapes of ß-brass grains which had been separated with mercury. The similarity in detail of shape and packing that exists between bubbles in a soap froth and metal grains was noted by Desch who remarks that: "Surface tension has an. important share in determining the form of the crystal grains in a solidifying metal and such grains have a tendency to assume the shape of foam cells." More recently the relation between grain shape and grain growth has been studied by Harker and Parker.' The importance of surface tension forces in determining microstructure has been discussed by Smith," and an analysis of the topologi-cal rules that apply to such structures has been made by the same author.' Biologists have made valuable contributions to the general problem of shape and form in an assembly of space-filling cells subject to surface tension forces. Particular mention must be made of the extensive researches of Lewis5,8 on botanical and anatomical tissues, and Matzke and Nestler,7,8 who have made painstaking studies of bubble shapes in different kinds of foam. The present paper introduces a new method of studying individual grains in particular alloys—a method which may well find use in other metallurgical researches, and which seems also to be applicable in biological problems. Metal Grains in Three Dimensions The individual grains in a piece of metal or the bubbles in a soap froth must satisfy two conditions —they must be in juxtaposition so as to fill space and their interfaces must conform to the laws of surface tension. If a further restriction is imposed, namely, that only one type of polyhedron be used, then the sole possibility is an assembly of "minimal" tetrakaidecahedra," each polyhedron having eight doubly-curved hexagonal faces and six plane quadrilateral faces, the angles between adjacent faces being 120". Such cells could be stacked on a body-centered cubic lattice and would be quite stable. For many years it was believed that soap bubbles actually possessed the shape of this ideal body, and the hypothesis was the starting point for several investigations on the shapes of soap bubbles, biological cells, and metal grains. These investigations have shown, what might have been obvious in the beginning, that if the condition of symmetry is relaxed the tetrakaidecahedron is almost never found. If we retain only the rule that all contacts should be in local surface tension equilibrium and that the assembly should fill space, metal grains may then take a nearly infinite variety of shapes and no single one may be regarded as an archetype. These two conditions, which are fully discussed in one of the previously mentioned papers,' lead us to think of a typical grain in an annealed metal as having the following characteristics: 1—A grain may have any number of faces, but usually between nine and eighteen. The faces (each of which is, of course, shared by two grains in the assembly) may have any number of edges, but usually between four and six. Very little has been published recently on this subject in the mining journals or proceedings of societies. The attention of experts has been diverted perhaps by the demands for pan amalgamation of refractory ores. Yet free milling ores occur in many localities, and it may be interesting to have on record some data as to details of running a small test-mill, especially as details of results do not seem to be accessible to stndents and investigators. Küstel, in 1863, under battery amalgamation, dismisses the subject by stating that "amalgamation on copper-plated platforms, troughs, and other copper fixings" is " very imperfect, and mostly abandoned."
