OF the various methods of sampling gas-condensate wells, a method that secures a continuous representative sample of the well stream is desirable. Such a method, consisting of a sampling tube introduced into the well tubing, has proved satisfactory. The method is sufficiently accurate for operating and engineering problems. A portable testing apparatus can be used with the sampling tube to obtain data useful in studying the economic and technical aspects of the development and operation of gas-condensate properties. INTRODUCTION The recent discovery and development of gas reserves that contain hydrocarbons that condense with reduction of temperature or pressure, or both, to form a product known as condensate, has brought many new problems to the oil and gas industries. With further discovery of deep, high-pressure fields it is presumable that many more gas fields of this type will be added to the steadily increasing number. Such gas reserves are found either associated with oil as a gas cap or in separate formations. There seems to be no positive correlation between the physical or geological nature of the reservoir, and the chemical composition or phase characteristics of its contents. Knowledge of the chemical make-up and phase behavior of gas-condensate reserves are needed to cope with many problems. A knowledge of the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the reservoir material is necessary to properly design a gasoline or recycling plant, to estimate natural gas and condensate reserves, to enable the operator to study the economic and technical aspects of various methods of operation and development, and to carry out the plan of operating subsurface and surface lease equipment. This information is often useful in questions of mineral ownership, proration, legal position, and taxation. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss methods used by the writers to determine the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the fluids produced from a condensate well. The scope of the paper includes a discussion and description of the method of sampling, the results of tests on the accuracy of the sampling method, a description of a portable testing apparatus used to examine the phase characteristics, typical results of tests on wells from several condensate fields, and some of the applications of these data to production problems. References to previous work on this subject are cited at the end of the paper. From thermal, metallographic, X-ray, dilatometric, and electrical resistance data a Phase diagram is proposed for the La-C system. TWO compounds are formed, body-centered-cubic Laz C, having a large range of solid solubility, and body -centered-tetrago-nal Lac2 . The former melts incongruently at 1415°C, and at 25OC it has an electrical resistivity about two and one-half times that of bure lanthanum. The latter melts congruently at 2356°C and at room temperature has an electrical resistivity about equal to that of bure lanthanum. The addition of carbon to La lowers the melting Point of La about 115' C, raises the higher (B-Y) transfomzation about 10" C and appears to have no effect on the lower ( a-0) transformation. The addition of carbon appears to lower the oxygen content in the metal and improve the machinability; however, the tendency to oxidize is increased. Two eutectics are formed in the system. The first occurs at 2.2 pct C and melts at 806" C, while the second occurs between Lac2 and C with a melting point of2271"C. PETTERSSON,~ in 1895, was the first to prepare lanthanum dicarbide by heating the oxide with carbon in an electric furnace. He showed that this yellow, crystalline but brittle carbide had a formula corresponding to LaCz and that it reacted with water with the evolution of hydrogen and hydrocarbons and the formation of the hydrated oxide. Von Stackelberg's investigation of the crystal structure of the MCz carbides showed that the lanthanum dicarbide is of the tetragonal calcium dicarbide-type structure. He found the lattice parameters were a = 3.92 and c = 6.56.* Bredig,' using X-ray methods, showed that the room-temperature form of lanthanum dicarbide is stable up to 1750 °C and that above this temperature it transformsoto a face-centered-cubic structure, a = 6.0 ± O.lA, probably of the pyrite, FeSzstruc- typ? The reported discovery of two new cerium carbides, suggested that a corresponding face-centered-cubic lanthanum monocarbide and a body-centered-cubic lanthanum sesquicarbide might exist. This paper describes work on the lanthanum-carbon system which is part of a study of the rare earth metals and their alloys now in progress in this laboratory. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Source of Materials—The lanthanum metal was prepared at the Ames Laboratory by metal1o;hermic reduction of the fluoride with calcium metal. The results of spectrographic and chemical analysis indicated the presence of 0.01 pct Y, Al, Cu, Fe, and Si; 0.02 pct Ca and Mg; 230 ppm C; and 115 ppm N. This paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. Pipes Examined The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from 3/4 in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often IOO to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is Ioo° to 160°F. Water Supples The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table 1 are characterized by relatively low hardness, 10, alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. A characteristic of all of these waters is that they do not deposit a protective mineral coating as do waters with high bicarbonate of lime content, which would be reflected

Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The first tube-mill on the Rand was put into operation in May. 1904, at the Glen Deep Mine. From that time onwards, tube-mills were added to various plants, although little was known regarding the capacity of a given tube-mill when working on banket ore. Within a few years, however, the so-called standard size (length of shell, 22 ft. 0 in.; diameter, 5 ft. 6 in.) was generally used until the last year or two. Practically the only exceptions were about 30 tube-mills having a length of 16 ft. and a diameter of 6 ft., and a few open-end mills of the roller-supported type. Most of the information obtained during the last 15 years has been obtained with mills of the standard dimensions. The adoption of the tube-mill as an accessory to the stamp mill was rapid; and where 3 tube-mills were working on the Rand at the end of 1904, 244 were in use seven years later.' By 1910, good practice provided 1 tube-mill for 20 stamps of 2000-lb. falling weight. The horsepower of the motors driving the tube-mills had increased from 80 to 100 and then to 125 at this date. Broadly speaking, current practice at that date aimed at a ha1 product of which 60 per cent. was suitable for sand treatment and 40 per cent. for slime. The sand grading was +60 mesh, 6 per cent.; +90 mesh, 25 per cent.; — 90 mesh, 69 per cent.; and the slime grading +200 mesh, 2 per cent.; —200 mesh, 98 per cent. The first presentation of this paper was before the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section of the Institute in May, 1914, after which a committee was selected to verify and add to the data contained in the original paper. The author is indebted to G. W. Engel, H. W. Montz, R. V. Norris, and H. H. Otto, of this committee, for additional information. I also wish to acknowledge the courtesies extended me by a number of the mining companies for information relative to accidents, systems of proving, and mining practice. The paper should bring forth additional criticism and recommendations, which will be of value in establishing future practice relative to this subject. Throughout the northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania glacial and alluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and clay exist in varying quantities. The extent and character of these deposits are described by N. H. Darton in Bulletin 45 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, entitled, Sand Available for Filling Mine Workings in the Northern Anthracite Basin. It is estimated that the northern field contains 10,000,000,000 tons of these deposits, or a sufficient quantity to cover the 176 square miles of coal area to a depth of about 25 ft. These deposits of sand, etc., overlying the coal measures attain a maximum depth of more than 300 ft., and are usually saturated to such an extent as to render them semi-fluid. It is this condition of fluidity that limits the mining of coal seams cropping in or in close proximity to these deposits, and it is in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods under these conditions that the study of this subject is here presented. The dangers incident to mining under deep deposits of sand have long been realized by operators in the northern anthracite field, and much has been done to prove the contour of the rock and vein croppings underlying these water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel. Although, as far as we know, the accidents of the past have not resulted in the loss of life, except in two instances, yet nearly all were attended with more or less miraculous escapes of men working in the vicinity of the breaks, so that the probable existence of pot holes, etc.,

IN this paper, which is a logical extension of my paper, The Laws of Intrusion, 1 the various pressures of emanation and their mechanical causes and effects on the large scale of nature are determined, .and a classification of emanations is deduced therefrom. The Subterranean Sea. The subterranean sea is here defined as the intercommunicating water contained in the trains of pores and fissures of the rocks down to great depths. Whether the actual amount of water constituting this subterranean sea be large or small, does not enter into the present argument, since the static pressure of this water at any particular depth is not a function of the quantity : it involves only the depth and the density of the water. Densities. The total pressure at depths down to 10 or 15 miles is made up of the rock-stresses investigated in my previous papers, and the pressure of the subterranean sea. The latter component must evidently be equal to the weight of a solid column of the overlying water of unit sectional area. As water expands with heat, it should really be necessary to sum the density at every level. A knowledge of the densities of water under a variety of conditions is therefore needed, but does not seem ever to have been ascertained for such combined pressures and temperatures as we have to consider. EFFORT to develop fundamental quantitative information and improved technique in the production of petroleum has long been faced with difficulties of a particularly evasive nature, owing to a combination of circumstances. In the first place, petroleum comes from far below the ground, out of sight, so that information derived from indirect observations must be extrapolated to reservoir conditions. If one does not force the analogy too far, the petroleum engineer may be said to be somewhat in the position of the astronomer. The actual phenomena which he wishes to observe in detail appear at a place so deep in the earth?s crust that personal observations and direct experiments are impossible.

The finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; via., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line. The term "casting temperature" is rather indefinite as there ale several temperatures to which the term may be applied. Most writers who have mentioned casting temperature of steel have alluded to it in relative terms. The few who have given actual temperatures, including Langmuir, Burgess, Styri, and Bash, do not give full information about them. Their results demonstrate the efficiency of pyrometers used rather than aid the steelmaker. In order to understand and use the temperatures, one should know in each case what the steel was, the stage at which the temperature was taken, whether it was usual or not, and whether or not it was right for that steel at that stage. LONG before the Stone Age, when man first sought shelter where there-were no natural shelters, such as caves and clefts in the rock, he uprooted trees and planted them upside down so that the roots formed the roof. By selecting trees whose roots grew out in a horizontal direction and; by planting these trees close enough - together, a crude shelter was formed. He then took mud, formed a plaster and covered over the' roots. Later the walls were made by using sticks and twigs and plastering between them. It is natural then, that he wiped his muddy hands on- his own hairy body and soon found that the mud was difficult to remove when, dry. It is due, to this discovery that we mix animal hair in 'our modern plaster to increase its strength. The use of fibrous asbestos in some refractory cements has followed this same principle.

PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. Three years ago the writer presented a paper on the trend of development in the wrought iron industry,' wherein was described a process in the development of which he has been a factor, which at that time had passed through several years of progressive experimental development but which had not then been put upon a commercial scale of operation. The present paper deals with two years of observation and experience in the commercial operation of a plant by the A. M. Byers Co. at Warren, Ohio. It will not enter into the controversial field of the relative merit of wrought iron and steel in various classes of service, nor will it elaborate upon the characteristic services or fields of utility to which wrought iron is particularly adapted. It is sufficient to state that the wrought iron industry is upon a substantial basis and that the material finds service in pipe, where its advantages are in superior corrosion, fatigue, welding and threading qualities; in bar iron for staybolts, engine bolts, and rivets, demanding maximum service against corrosion and fatigue; in plates for corrosion service; and in chains, because of welding and shock-resisting characteristics. In short, ability to withstand the stresses of shock and vibration, or the ravages of corrosion, to hold protective coatings, and to give maximum efficiency in welding, are its features of relative superiority. If these features were not well recognized, the wrought iron industry would have shrunk to insignificance in the face of high costs and acknowledged limitations in manufacture. To charge that this industry is built upon a structure of assumption, psychology, and improperly weighed evidence is an impeachment of the integrity or belittling of the powers of observation of users through many centuries of service experiences. In a history which extends to prehistoric time, and which is linked up with the earliest records of ferrous products, the dominant method of manufacture, as we have known it for little over a century, occupies a very small niche in the span of years that mark production and use of wrought iron. Fluoride, generally less than 0.5 ppm, is present in ground water from rocks of Paleozoic age and older, in northern and eastern Alabama. Some of the water-bearing formations in the Coastal Plain area of the State yield water with as much as 6.8 ppm fluoride.

EVEN in the choice of his birthplace and parents, Donald B. Gillies indicated clearly the trend of his professional career. He was born on Nov. 4, 1872, at Bruce Mines, in Ontario. His father and mother came from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to Nova Scotia, moved from there to Canada, and finally settled in the copper country in the northern peninsula of Michigan, where the senior Mr. Gillies followed mining as an occupation. Donald's early education was in the public schools and he graduated from Linden Lake (Mich.) high school in 1890. Following the family interest in mining he entered the Michigan Mining School, now Michigan College of Mining and Technology. There he was the rare student who excelled both in athletics and scholastic work. On the athletic field he was a crack football player and track roan.
