First response to large-scale water flooding in the fractured very low permeability Spraberry sand has led to a new unique cyclic operation. Capacity water injection is used to restore reservoir pressure. This is followed by marly months production without water irzjection and the cycle repeated. Expansion of the oil, rock and water during pressure decline expels part of the fluids but capillary forces hold much of the injected water in the rock. At least with reservoir pressure restored and with partial water flood development, field performance has proved this cyclic operation is capable of producing oil from the nzatrix rock at least 50 per cent faster and with lower water percentage than is imbibition of water at stable reservoir pressure. INTRODUCTION The Spraberry Field of West Texas presents unusual problems for both primary production and water flooding. Extensive interconnected vertical fractures in the fractional-md sandstone permitted recovery of oil on 160-acre well spacing, but they made capillary end effects dominant. Primary recovery by solution gas drive is less than 10 per cent of oil in place. The concept of displacement of oil from the sand matrix by capillary irnbibition of water has led to field techniques which promise greatly increased oil recovery. Free exchange of laboratory research, reservoir information and results of field pilot tests among the various companies has been very important in development of this technology. Five units covering a total of 170,000 acres have been formed for water flooding, and 10 other areas covering an additional 175,500 acres are in various stages of unitization. Part of the Driver Unit reaching fillup first has demonstrated very unusual waterflood behavior and indicated numerous operating problems that will develop within and among the various units. SPRABERRY ROCK AND PRIMARY PERFORMANCE The Spraberry, discovered in February, 1949, is a 1,000-ft section of sandstones, shales and limestones with two main oil productive members: a 10-15 ft sand near the top and a 10-15 ft sand near the base. In part of the field some thinner intermediate sands are oil productive, and others are water bearing. All sands have permeabilities of 1 md or less and porosities of 8-15 per cent. Ordinary core analysis and electric and radiation logs are ineffective in differentiating between oil productive and nonprcductive sands. Sands capable of containing producible oil are best identified by mercury injection capillary pressure measurement and, in some cases, by core water saturation. About 3,500 wells have been drilled in the 500,000-acre trend. Vertical fractures were observed in practically all Spraberry cores. Continuity and interconnection of fractures were confirmed by pressure interference among wells during early development.' Major fractures trend northeast-southwest as indicated by oriented cores and confirmed by five fluid injection tests, by analysis of the pressure transients observed during development,''' and by three interference tests in the Driver Unit Water Flood reported herein. Fracture spac- ing probably averages inches to a few feet. Spraberry wells typically produced 100-400 BOPD initially after hydrauLic fracture treatments. By 1962 oil production had declined to an average of 12 bbl/well/day, near the economic Limits of operation. Reservoir pressure had declined from 2,300 psi initially in the Upper Spraberry and 2,500 psi in the Lower Spraberry to 500-1,000 psi. Partial closing of the fractures with declining reservoir pressure is believed to be the cause of such low oil production rates at these relatively high reservoir pressures. Cumulative recovery of 208 million bbl of oil is 80 to 90 per cent of that recoverable by primary means. Performance of the entire reservoir is summarized in Fig. 1. IMBIBITION WATER FLOODING By 1952 reservoir performance indicated low primary recoveries. Most engineers, expecting serious channeling of injected fluids through the fractures, held little hope for secondary recovery. With its extensive background of research on the fundamentals of fluid flow within reservoir rocks, Atlantic's Research and Development Division on short notice in 1952 conceived that displacement of oil by capillary imbibition of water into the rock might significantly increase Spraberry recovery. Laboratory data reported by Brownscombe and Dyes scaled to probable reservoir conditions showed potential waterflood recovery equal to or greater than primary recovery with a 10-15 year flood life.= A pilot test using three 40-acre injection wells, one central producing well and 18 surrounding observation wells demonstrated technical feasibility of the process. The object of this study was to determine if crude oil could be produced successfully by a process of crude oil vaporization using carbon dioxide repressuring. This process appears to have application to highly fractured formations where the major oil content of the reservoir is contained in the non-fractured porosity with little associated permeability. Crude oil was introduced into the windowed cell and carbon dioxide was charged to the cell at the desired pressure. A vapor space was formed above the oil, and the crude oil-carbon dioxide mixture was allowed to come to equilibrium. The vapor phase was removed and the vaporized oil collected as condensate. Samples of all produced and unproduced fluids were analyzed. Tests were also performed to evaluate the amount of vaporized oil that can he produced by rocking from a high to a lower pressure. The carbon dioxide repressuring process was applied to a sand-filled cell to investigate the performance in a porous medium. A test was performed to evaluate how the condensate recovery changes as the size of the gas cap in contact with the oil changes. INTRODUCTION This study has been directed toward a relatively new process of vaporization of crude oil designed to increase ultimate production of hydrocarbons through the application of carbon dioxide to an oil reservoir. Suggested advantages of carbon dioxide repressuring of a petroleum reservoir are: (1) reduction in viscosity of liquid hydrocarbons due to the solubility of carbon dioxide in crude oil, (2) swelling of the reservoir oil into a larger liquid-oil volume with a resulting increase in production and decrease in residual oil saturation due to an increase in the relative permeability to oil, (3) displacement of more stock-tank oil from the reservoir since the residual liquid is a swelled crude oil, and (4) gasification of some of the hydrocarbons into a carbon dioxide-hydrocarbon vapor mixture. Balanced against these advantages are several detrimental factors which must be evaluated; i.e., high compression costs and corrosion of well equipment and flow lines. Some of the more outstanding contributions to the study of carbon dioxide injection have been reviewed in order to furnish a basis for a continuation of research pertaining to this method. The literature reviewed1-8 has been limited to that dealing with carbon dioxide repressuring processes or with carbon dioxide-crude oil-natural gas phase behavior. Articles relating to carbonated water injection and literature published on the use of low pressure carbon dioxide gas injection in water flooding have not been included in this study. In 1941 Pirson5 suggested the high pressure injection of carbon dioxide into a partially depleted reservoir for the purpose of causing the reservoir oil to vaporize and thus produce the oil as a vapor along with the carbon dioxide gas. By reducing the pressure on this produced mixture of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide at the surface, it was proposed to separate the hydrocarbons from the carrier gas. He theorized that essentially all the oil in a reservoir could be produced by simply injecting enough carbon dioxide to vaporize the residual oil. This present investigation deals with the vaporization of a crude oil by carbon dioxide, the molecular weight and gravity of the vaporized oil product and the characteristics of the residual oil after several repressuring cycles with carbon dioxide. An attempt is made to evaluate the merits of a vaporization process for the crude oil rather than a flow process where the oil recovery is determined by relative permeability considerations. Such a vaporization of crude oil by carbon dioxide repressuring appears to have possible use in a highly fractured formation where the major oil content of the reservoir is contained in the non-fractured porosity with little permeability. The carbon dioxide flows into the fractures, contacts the crude oil in the matrix and vaporizes part of the crude oil; this vaporized oil is produced and recovered and the carbon dioxide is reinjected again. The specific problem of this study is to attempt to answer this question; Can crude oil be produced successfully (technically, but without economic considerations) from a petroleum reservoir by a process of vaporization of the crude oil by carbon dioxide repressuring? DEFINITION OF TERMS AS APPLIED IN THIS STUDY Carbon Dioxide Contact: One cycle in which carbon dioxide was injected and bled off. Condensate: The hydrocarbon liquid which was condensed out of the mixture of hydrocarbon-carbon dioxide vapor upon reduction of the pressure of the vapor. Hydrocarbons Produced (HCP): All the hydrocarbon!, which were vaporized by the carbon dioxide repressuring process and were removed from the cell during any specific cycle or carbon dioxide contact. The Zv-Hf-H ternary system was studied between 500° and 900°C at pressures less than 1 atm of hydrogen gas between 1 and 60 at. pct H. A new and unique microgravimentric apparatus was used. Cizanges of slope on pressure-hydrogen composition isothernis delineated phase boundaries. These boundaries separatecl the three regions, a, 0, and y—so designated to correspond to the regions of the Zr-H binary system—from the multiphased areas between them. However, at high hydrogen contents the entropy was the predorninatlt factor in determining the stability of the Zr-Hf-H al1o.s. This was interpreted to mean a scarcity of filrtlzer itltevslilinl solute sites caused by hydrogen-hydvogen intet-actions in the metal lattice. INTEREST in the reaction of hydrogen with metals has increased in the past few years for the following reasons: 1) the formation or use of high hydrogen potential environments in nuclear reactors; 2) the reaction of hydrogen with alloys in nuclear reactors with the accompanying deleterious effects on the mechanical and corrosion properties; 3) the theoretical implications of thermodynamic data on the theory and rules of alloy formation in the metal-hydrogen systems; 4) the use of hydrogen-containing fuels in rocket engines; 5) the need for a process of making fine metal powders of high-melting reactive metals; and 6) the beneficial impregnation of superconducting alloys with hydrogen. In nuclear pressurized-water reactors, the problem exists of limiting the hydrogen pickup of zirconium alloys which are utilized as fuel cladding, heat shields, and support members. In general, zirconium alloys have good mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties in high-temperature water. However, hydrogen is absorbed from the corrosion reaction between metal and water, greatly accelerating the formation of the corrosion product ZrOz as well as mechanically embrittling the underlying metal. In addition, recent observations1 at zirconium to hafnium welds showed that secondary elements in zirconium can have an appreciable, and somewhat unexpected, effect on hydrogen absorption. This paper lists the thermochemical data in the range 500" to 900°C for the equilibrium reaction of four high-purity Zr-Hf alloys with hydrogen. Phase boundaries and thermodynamic functions are determined while the structural data will be presented in a future paper. In general, the Zr-Hf-H system approximates the well-known, eutectoidal, Zr-H diagram2,3 with modifications introduced through the behavior of hafnium.4,5 The Hf-H system,' published while this work was in progress, provided a consistent trend with the Zr-Hf-H data. PREPARATION OF Zr-Hf ALLOYS Table I presents a complete flow chart of the preparation procedure. The zirconium and hafnium crystal bars were completely immersed in high-purity kerosene and slowly cut into thin wafers. Wafers were then cold-sheared into approximately 1-g pieces, thoroughly cleaned, weighed, and inserted into the furnace. The alloys, B-2, B-4, B-6, and B-8, were then nonconsumable arc-melted under 500 mm of purified argon. Additional purification of the argon was accomplished by melting a large titanium button each time an alloy was re-melted or a different alloy melted. Each alloy button, which weighed 25 g, was remelted four times in an approach to complete homogeneity. Material losses were less than 0.02 wt pct. Alloy buttons were alternately cold-rolled and vacuum-annealed into 10- and 20-mil sheets. Table I1 gives the composition of the four alloys used. Very little elemental segregation existed be-

Since its development about forty years ago by J. V. N. Dorr (Cyanidation and Concentration of Gold and Silver Ores, McGraw Hill Book Co., 1936, 1-5), and others, continuous countercurrent decantation has not only become one of the standard methods for extracting gold and silver from their ores, but has also found wide application in other metallurgical and chemical industries. In 1917 L. B. Eames published an excellent paper (Countercurrent Decantation, Trans AIME, 1917, 57, 143- 158), in which he determined the effects of grade of ore, ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated, variations in the density of the thickener spigot discharge and variations in the value of the barren solution upon the gold assay of the solutions discharged from the thickeners in the system. Eames showed that, other things being equal, the dissolved gold lost in the tailing varies directly as the value of the ore and as the value of the barren solution. The tailing loss de- creases rapidly as the ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated is increased to about three or four to one. Beyond this point the improvement is negligible.

The cost and the speed of sinking a shaft are factors of so great importance in operating a mine, that the data given in Table I., herewith published, will be of interest and value to all engaged in practical mining; and for this reason the data are communicated for permanent and accessible record in our Transactions. The figures 'of cost cover the period from January 1, 1903, to May 31, 1903, during which time the total depth sunk was 858 ft. So far as I know, the cost of sinking per foot (£13,15s., 11.04d.) of a shaft of the dimensions 21 ft. by 6 ft. in hard rock, is the cheapest yet on record; and the speed of 213.5 ft. per month, which was attained during May, 1903, is also the best record for speed in sinking in rock so hard as that of this shaft. During the period from January 1 to May 31, 1903, there were 144 rounds worked, involving 4,032 holes, of a total depth of 28,963 ft. 2.4 in., which is equivalent to an average depth of 7 ft. 2.2 in. per hole bored. These data are of added interest from the fact that the work was done practically by native labor.

THE handling of native labor is offering an interesting problem that requires diplomacy. It is difficult to induce many of the men to leave their villages and enter into regular work. They do not feel the necessity of manual labor other than to obtain sufficient money to pay the annual hut tax and to buy a little clothing. The ground provides mealies (corn) which means food and beer, he hunts and catches fish, so why work? But gradually, as the native becomes more civilized, his wants increase and his ideas change; he now needs money to supply his desires and eventually he must work more. So in time it is hoped that the labor market will be better supplied.

Electrostatic separation of ores in its present form is generally known as the Huff process, from the name of Charles H. Huff, of Boston, Mass., through whose constant and persistent labors (with the invention of Clinton E. Dolbear as a basis) the successful commercial process embracing separative machinery and the various electrifying devices has been developed step by step, and the finances for the long period of development provided, and the method finally established and recognized throughout the world as an important and successful addition to the ore-dressing department of metallurgy. The permanent field-success of electrostatic separation began in 1908 with a 20-ton Huff experimental mill built specially for the purpose by the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Go., in Platterille, Wis., a plant which was a success from the start and was gradually increased in capacity as the market-conditions warranted to 100 tons of concentrates per day. ALTHOUGH it is obvious that in any flotation process we must have a froth, in recent years the development of collecting reagents has caused the possibilities of better frothing agents to be overlooked. Some investigators have even gone so far as to say that the number of satis-factory frothing agents was sufficient. A little consideration will show, however, that the reagents available in the past were far from ideal frothers. The properties of an ideal frother for flotation work may be set down as follows: 1. It. must form in low concentrations a copious but not too persist-ent froth. 2. It must be insensitive to hydrogen-ion concentration of the pulp; that is, it must froth equally well in an acid or alkaline medium. 3. It must be insensitive to salts, even in high concentration. 4. It must be absolutely noncollecting to both sulfides and nonsulfides. 5. Its frothing properties must not be affected by collecting reagents, including soap, the most generally used nonsulfide collector. 6. It must readily emulsify and disperse any insoluble collecting agent that is likely to be used. Clearly the existing frothers do not qualify. Pine oil, for example, is an acceptable frother for many purposes but if used in soap flotation a delicate balance between pine oil and soap must be struck because, as pointed out by Coghill1, these two reagents are incompatible in certain concentrations. The objections to soap itself as a frother are obvious, and the cresols and their substitution products all have some collecting Dower and very little emulsifying power.

The wetiability of single crystals of MgO by specimens of vacuum-cast iron was studied using the sessile drop technique in vacuo at 1550ºC. Formation of FeO at the liquid-vapor interface caused the contact angle (6) to decrease from 117 to 65 deg during the first minute. After cooling, all specimens possessed a peculiar annular interfacial deposit of Fe,O,. Within the annulus the interface showed no sign of chemical attack. Chemical reaction occurred where the iron was alloyed with Ti, V, Cr, Nb(Cb), Ta, cmd Zr. Vnriation of 6 with alloy concentration was studied. Although vanadium md chromium improved the wettability of MgO by iron, the effect of Zr, Ti, Nb, and Ta was indeterminable because the 8 derived from sessile drop considerations was that of the metal against a restrictive peripheral volume of liquid oxide wetting the substrate. INTEREST in the nature of metal-ceramic interactions has been stimulated by progressive development of metal-ceramic combinations. One of the more valuable methods used for bond investigation is the sessile drop technique. Recent attempts to improve wettability through solute additions to the drop have revealed that the solute may a) react with the oxide creating new compounds at the solid-liquid interface, b) adsorb at the interface in a monolayer formation, or c) distribute throughout the drop uniformly causing no wettability variation. This work, part m in a series1,2 of investigations of interface reactions between metals and ceramics, embraces a study of the Fe-MgO system. MgO possesses a large negative free energy of formation (-173 kcal per g mole 0, at 1550ºC) compared to FeO at this temperature (-73 kcal per g mole 02). Hence the electronegativity difference between the drop and substrate allows selection from an extensive group of metal solutes with intermediate electronegativity differences that would, in the absence of chemical reactions, be expected to adsorb pre- ferentially at the solid-liquid interface. However, the high oxygen pressure of MgO in vacuo creates an oxidation environment which influences the solute behavior. Recent studies of the Fe-MgO systemJ74 have been restricted by chemical reactions that obscured observations. In view of the current interest in liquid-phase sintering of metal-ceramic combinations under partial oxidizing conditions,5 a more comprehensive study of the Fe-MgO system seemed beneficial. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Specimen Preparation. Optical-grade MgO single crystals and Ferrovac vacuum-cast iron were used in all experiments. A spectrographic analysis of the iron indicated 0.008 C, 0.05 V, 0.005 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 S, 0.01 Cr, 0.001 Mg, 0.01 Si, 0.003 A1 (wt pct). The MgO crystals were cleaved along (100) planes into plates approximately 20 by 20 by 1 mm. Following annealing in vactto at 1100°C for 3 hr, surface irregularities were removed by a chemical etch in phosphoric acid at 100°C. The iron rod was machined into small cylinders approximately 0.250 in. in diam and length and these were carefully cleaned in organic and acidic solutions to remove surface impurities. All specimens were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. 2) Apparatus. The apparatus described in detail by previous authors1,2 was modified for this work. A Polaroid Land Camera was incorporated into the optical system so that drop measurements at ten-second intervals after melting were possible with ultra-high-speed self-develop ing film. 3) Procedure. The iron cylinders were placed upright on the MgO plates and positioned in the molybdenum susceptor. After furnace assembly the system was pumped down to a vacuum of 1 µ and flushed with H2 at 800°C. The system was again evacuated to 5 x 10-5 mm of mercury and the temperature raised to 1550°C within 2 min. The molten drops were photographed at appropriate time intervals. TWO min after melting the iron vapor pressure caused gas discharge, or corona, within the tube. The specimens were then slowly cooled to room temperature, sectioned and examined metallographi-cally. THE president of a large smelting and refining company once telegraphed me that they had acquired extensive mining interests in northern Peru and requested me to inspect their properties as it would be necessary to install a system of aerial tramways between their mines and treatment plant. The concentrator was about 50 mi. from the coast, reached by a fairly good motor road. From the concentrator an aerial tramway would he required, about 6 mi. long, to their first property, a gold and silver mine. The lower terminal of the tramway was at an elevation of 4000 ft. and the mine at an elevation of 9500 ft.

In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself- only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions.

Some time ago, the author had occasion to make an alloy of equal parts of nickel and aluminum, for the purpose of adding small amounts of nickel to pure aluminum. The nickel was melted in a plumbago crucible under a layer of borax ; and at a proper temperature the aluminum was added, and the whole mass was stirred with a plumbago stirrer. The alloy immediately became incandescent and boiled. It was then poured into iron moulds, in the form of ingots weighing about 10 pounds. The metal when poured was very fluid and free from the viscosity so often noticed in nickel and nickel-alloys. The color of the alloy is gray, not unlike that of wrought-iron, and the fracture is devoid of any crystalline appearance. It is quite brittle, and can be readily ground to a powder in a mortar. More metal was made than was needed; and what remained unused was placed in a covered wooden box and set away. In about three months, as it mas again necessary to use the alloy, the box was opened; and, much to my surprise, nothing but a dark gray powder was found in it. This condition of the alloy could not be accounted for. An attempt was made to melt the powder and pour it again into ingots, but with negative results. Reinartz (Armco Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio) —I would like to know, in the practical application of the Kalling process, what kind of a lining was used, how thick was the lining, and how much metal was treated at one time? S. Fornander (author's reply)—The rotary furnace is lined with a course of fireclay bricks 6 in. thick. This course is backed by 5 in. of insulation. The furnace has a capacity of about 15 tons. Mr. Reinartz—How was the ladle preheated? Mr. Fornander—As pointed out in the paper, the furnace was heated by a gas flame in the beginning of the experiments. During these first tests, however, the desulphurization was inconsistent. We think that this was due to the fact that iron droplets sticking to the furnace walls were oxidized by the gas flame. Now, the furnace is operated without preheating of any kind, and the results are much better. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—I might add one comment. This furnace was heated with a flame and for a time they had a little difficulty due to some residual metal in the rotating drum that would oxidize in between treatments and they found therefore, that it was very essential to drain the drum completely of metal so that they would not build up any ferrous oxide between treatments and they eliminated some of their erratic heats by maintaining those more reducing conditions. It was interesting to watch this operation. As soon as the drum started to rotate there was considerable flame, at least, at the time I saw it, that came out around the flanges, indicating there was quite a little pressure on the inside of the drum. W. 0. Philbrook (Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh)—Is the reaction slag in the Kalling process liquid or solid, and how is it separated from the metal? Mr. Fornander—In the process there is no slag in the usual sense of the word. The lime powder does not melt during the treatment. After the treatment the lime is still in the form of a fine powder. It is separated from the metal by means of a piece of wood of suitable size placed within the furnace before it is emptied. D. C. Hilty (Union Carbide & Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls, N. Y.)—Dr. Chipman has given us some of his ideas in connection with a specific effect of silicon and silica on sulphur elimination and how silicon might interfere with desulphuriz- ing in the blast furnace. I wonder if he would like to elaborate on the possibility of a similar effect of silicon in the Kalling process? J. Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—Silicon does not interfere with the Kalling process. Anything that has strong reducing action is good for desulphurization. In these tests where the temperature was low compared to blast furnace temperatures, the silicon that is in the metal is a better reducing agent than the carbon. At high temperatures, carbon is the better. It is not the silicon in the metal that interferes with desulphurization, it is the silica in the slag. Mr. Joseph—I might add that the metal that was tapped from the drum after desulphurization was really at quite a low temperature. It was not measured, but I think it was well under 1300 °C, probably 1200" or a little above that. That was one of the difficulties, and I think there is no question about the fact that the Kalling process—in that it affects desulphurization between powdered lime, solid and liquid iron— is a reaction definitely between the solid lime and the liquid iron. E. Spire (Canadian Liquid Air, Montreal, Canada) — This Kalling process seems very interesting to us and after all it is only a mixing action that is taking place between the iron and the slag. We have attempted to do the same thing in another way. We have placed at the bottom of the ladle a porous plug through which we injected an inert gas. It can be nitrogen or argon. This plug is placed at the bottom of the conventional ladle and gas injected through the plug. That has appeared in our patent. To define this new type of treatment, I use the word gasometallurgy. I do not know if you like it, but it is a way of defining methods of treating metal using gases. What we do is exactly what is done in the exchange process in another way. We have a porous plug at the bottom with a high lime slag on top of the metal. Using this method, we have very good agitation of metal and slag, and with a small flow of gas, we can achieve a very strong agitation. For instance, in the 500 lb ladle, we use only 5 liters of gas a minute. We have an agitation compared to very rapidly boiling water in a pail. Moreover, the agitation can be controlled to create any amount of mixing desired. In a few minutes, with this method, the sulphur dropped from 0.58 to 0.11. These results have been improved since, and we have obtained results like 0.08

§ 22. THe results published in Professor Howe's paper10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels " containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to 0.1 sec. for recording time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12 The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thermo-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

The Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great Merest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and I were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer's report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses.
