With the current emphasis on ecology, safety, and conservation of natural resources, some consideration should be given to methods of mining that reduce surface damage, make the mining of coal less hazardous, and allow exploitation of a larger percentage of the coal in situ. One method that can be helpful toward attaining these objectives is the use of packing or stowing. Stowing involves the replacement of the ore that has been removed by waste material obtained from within the mine or elsewhere. Evidently, it would be most beneficial if this waste for packing were available from the mine being worked, but generally this is not possible. If complete stowing is adopted, it is necessary to bring in packing material from other sources. Stowing tends to reduce surface subsidence, but not eliminate it. It enhances roof support and curtails accumulation of methane in the gob, making the mining operations safer. It may also allow one to obtain a larger amount of coal. Currently, in the United States, a substantial amount of coal is left in place as pillars, in the hope that it will support the overburden indefinitely. Some of these could be extracted with stowing. The mining of thick, steep, or contiguous seams would also be facilitated.

Most of the dust generated from the copper smelting process in Chile has been stored after the stabilization by hydrometallurgical process because it contains high concentrations of arsenic. However, in recent years, the dust generation has increased because of degrading the quality of concentrate. In addition, the environmental regulations become stricter. On the other hand, valuable metals such as copper and zinc are contained in the dust at high concentrations and it is desirable to recover them. In this study, the effect of dust recirculation to the smelting process was examined in order not only to decrease the amount of dust but also to recover copper. Dust generation and the distribution of arsenic, lead, zinc etc. among the matte, slag and gas phases were evaluated as a function of the amount of recirculated dust, partial pressure of oxygen and temperature. It was found that the direct dust return to the smelting process was quite effective for the recovery of copper and the reduction of dust generation, but the acceptable dust amount was limited by the produced matte quality.

In order to improve the utilization rate of blasthole and blasting effect in vertical shafts, 5 kinds of millisecond blasting model tests with three circle vertical blastholes have been conducted in various delay times with concrete as model material. The blasting effects of millisecond blasting model tests are investigated from cutting volume, cutting depth, and blasting fragmentation, then a reasonable delay time is obtained. In the middle of concrete model, there are 4 blastholes uniformly distributed in the first circle, 6 blastholes uniformly distributed in the second circle, and 10 blastholes uniformly distributed in the third circle. Each blasthole is charged with one millisecond delay electric detonator, and the rest is blocked with stemming. The depth of blastholes in the first and second circle is 180mm, which is 20mm deeper than those in the third circle. After initiation, the blasting cavity is cleaned up, then the cutting volume and cutting depth are measured. Meanwhile, the blasting fragments are gathered and have analysed by function Rosin-Rammler. The test results show that when the inner two circle blastholes initiated simultaneously and the third circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 3920 cm3 and 68 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 53.2 mm and 74.6 mm respectively. While when all three circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is also 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 10705 cm3 and 118 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 51.0 mm and 81.7 mm respectively. The researches indicate that for millisecond blasting with multiturn blastholes, the reasonable blasting scheme is multiturn blastholes initiated in millisecond delay and the reasonable delay time is 50 ms.

A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. This then has implications for resource classification if the classifications are based heavily on the OK quality without consideration of the true SMU distribution.CITATION:Kentwell, D, 2014. The outstanding developments of the year in southwestern Pennsylvania were the establishment of the Summit Fayette County gas pool and the gas pool in Nicholson township, Fayette County, and Monongahela township, Greene County, as major producing areas, and the indication of four new shallow gas pools. Curtailment of drilling for shallow gas is expected to follow order M68 of the Office of Production Management. Gas completions were approximately 70 per cent higher, oil completions nearly 25 per cent lower, dry holes were unchanged and drilling wells as of Dec. 31, 1941, nearly loo per cent higher than last year. Shallow Development Oil.—Outside Butler County, only 11 producers were drilled, with a total initial of 221 bbl. The best of these was in a portion of Gilmore township, Greene County, which ordinarily produces gas. This well flowed 77 bbl. in 11 hr., along with about one million cubic feet of gas from the Fourth (U.Dev.) sand. Washington County had a 10.20 and a 25-bbl. well in Morris township and a 20-bbl. well in South Franklin township. These were all in the Fifth Sand. The price of oil to Jan. 27 was $1.80 per barrel, when a 15¢ increase was made. This was followed by a raise of 20¢ on Apr. 23, 15¢ on May 21, 20¢ on June 18 and 25¢ on Aug. 14. The last increase was canceled on Aug. 23 by the Office of Price Administration, which pegged southwestern Pennsylvania crude at $2.40 per barrel. Gas.—An almost doubled initial production of natural gas is the result of the large increase in number of wells drilled. The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.

VV Mineral (VVM) group of companies is the largest and the first private producer and exporter of beach sand mineral products in India. During 2010, the company produced and marketed around 750 000 tons of saleable products. Their operations are mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, India. Almost all the wet pre-concentration plants use sea water as the concentration medium, since there is no fresh water source available near the deposits. The mines are located along the south-east coast of India in the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The orebody varies in terms of mineral assemblage, slime content, grain size, and surface coating resulting in different behaviour of the minerals. Three different deposits containing ilmenite of different TiO2 content were studied. The study shows that there is no significant impact of using sea water for wet concentration prior to high tension separation of ilmenite. There is no significant variation in recovery and purity of ilmenite produced from these deposits when wet concentration of the deposits were carried out with sea water as the concentration medium and whether the concentrates were washed with fresh water or not before dry separation using High Tension Roll Separators (HTRS).

IN 1897 I published a proposed explanation t for the variation in color and specific gravity of Pennsylvania oils. A resume of this subject was also presented at the First International Petroleum Congress, in Paris, in 1900. Since that time much experimental work bearing upon this explanation has been carried on by myself, in the United States Geological Survey, and under my direction, by Dr. J. Elliott Gilpin, Marshall P. Cram, and 0. E. Bransky, at the Johns Hopkins University. The experimental results thus accumulated seem to throw considerable additional light upon the variations in color and specific gravity of petroleum, as found in different parts of the world, and also upon the variations in chemical composition. Therefore, it seems as if a, summary of the evidence thus obtained might be of value to those members of the Institute who are interested in the examination of oil-fields. The summary is here presented for that purpose. The phenomenon has often been observed in many oil-fields that oils of different color, specific gravity, and chemical composition may be found within short distances of each other. A conspicuous example of this is the occurrence at Jennings, Welsh, and Anse la Butte, La., of petroleum chemically somewhat similar to Russian petroleum; that is, characterized by the presence of naphthenes. This report presents the results of a field and laboratory study by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the California Division of Mines, of the swelling-type bentonite deposits in the Vallecitos area in San Benito County, Calif. The purpose of the study was to learn if these large deposits contain bentonite of sufficient quality and quantity to be of economic value as an oil-well drilling mud additive. Large amounts of bentonitic clays are used by the petroleum industry as well as the steel industry in California. Additional amounts may be required in the near future as a concrete or earth-fill admixture in constructing dams and canals in the California Central Valley. Depletion of some local clay deposits and loss of others to military installation areas have given new emphasis to the need for developing new bentonite deposits in California.

"This study was done from a sample of coal mined at the Vale-Mozambique mine, located in Moatize district, Tete Province. The aim of this work is to analyze the reagent system in the flotation of coal fines belonging to the Upper Chipanga layer (UC). Among coal processing methods, flotation stands out as one of the most important for the concentration of this material, in particular in the treatment of fine particles. The total feed of the Vale-Mozambique processing plant is 8,000 tph of coal, where 10% of this feed corresponds to the fine fraction that feeds the flotation circuit. The material used in this study had a particle size of 96% smaller than 0.25 mm. The reagents used in the flotation tests were betacol and diesel oil as hydrophobizing agents and MIBC as frother. The range of betacol concentrations in the first test phase was 200 g/t to 500 g/t, and in the second phase 200g /t to 500g /t while diesel oil and MIBC were kept constant at 300 g/t. The immediate analysis followed the Brazilian standards NBR 8289, NBR 8293, NBR 8290; and NBR 8299. The results showed that it is possible, from a feed with ash content around 22.84%, to obtain products with levels below of 10% ash, with a mass recovery around 50%. The recovery of carbonaceous matter was also evaluated and presented positive results. Complementing this study, the effect of H2O recovery was evaluated and it was observed that for the concentrations of betacol the recoveries ranged from 6 to 9%, and for diesel oil plus MIBC were 4 to 7%.INTRODUCTION Considering the increase in population and energy consumption as humanity has been living along the last decades and the consequent demand for non-renewable natural resources, it is clear the challenge of the mineral industry in the search for new technologies and improvement of the existing ones. This challenge is justified by the need for better industrial results and to meet the market specifications, taking into account the reduction of deposits with higher contents and the need for beneficiation of more complex ores, lower levels and lower release granulometry. Usually in these situations, processes already well-established as the gravimetric (Sampaio and Tavares, 2005) have not good results."

"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. It also outlines the results of field tests carried out by an objective third party mining group and compares the results with those from current industry standard tests conducted on the same material.Citation:Kojovic, T, 2016. This presentation is about a small company, Industrial Mineral Products, that was formed in 1972 with one product and one customer and by a series of value-added changes avoided disaster and increased sales many times over. The principal of the company stopped by my office in Seattle looking for industrial mineral opportunities in the Northwest. We got together and went through all the minerals in Ladoo's "Industrial Minerals" from Abrasives to Zircon to see if we could find something available on the vast holdings of the Burlington Northern. At that time one of our lessees was operating a silica sand mine near Ravensdale, Washington and indicated that he might be interested in selling out. This sounded interesting to my client and within two weeks the transaction was completed.

This Bureau of Mines report presents information on the origin, collection, movement, and consumption of iron and steel scrap in California and Nevada. As far as practicable, information is presented on a grade basis. The iron and steel scrap industry in California is important from the standpoint of employment, economic essentiality, and dollar value. About 16,000 persons are either directly or indirectly employed on a full- or part- time basis in the collection, preparation, and sale of iron and steel scrap in California; in 1957 about 70 percent of the tonnage of products of California steel mills, valued at $271 million, was derived from scrap; the value of scrap in 1957 ($117 million) is about $10 million greater than the value of portland cement produced in California that year. The iron and steel scrap industry in Nevada is small.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

A safety glass eyepiece which had been repeatedly exposed to mine environment over a number of years was studied to determine some of its optical properties. In the regions from 385 to 400 mµ and from 625 to 760 mµ, the transmittance was less than the 89 percent required by the American Standard Safety Code for Head, Eye, and Respiratory Protection. From 200 to 320 mµ the relative transmittance of two parts of the eyepiece was found to vary widely, having a maximum of 38 percent difference at 315 mµ. Irradiation of the glass by ultraviolet light caused enhanced absorption in the range from 200 to 1,200 mµ. There was a time-dependent increase of 1016 color centers per cubic centimeter throughout this range after 36.5 hours of irradiation. Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. Determining mineralogical characteristics of samples throughout the iron ore concentration process – from drill core samples up to the concentrate – is critical to process improvement and remediation. However, assessment of mineral proportions, liberation, and texture, although essential, can be time-consuming and costly. Thus, a mineralogical study is often not performed or only restricted to a limited number of samples. New iron ore deposits or new ore zones in active mines will bring new challenges as they are known to be problematic due to their lower grades, complex textures and presence of mineral impurities. In those cases, applied process mineralogy will be necessary to understand and to diagnose potential processing issues. To take full advantage of mineralogical information along the iron ore concentration process, new tools are being developed to provide mineralogical data based on texture, composition and liberation. In an early stage at the mine, the automated identification of drill core textures could provide essential information for the prediction of ore concentrability and grindability. In a later stage, the automated modal tool, combining the knowledge of the iron ore mineralogy of a specific deposit and the results of chemical analyses, can quantify the mineral proportions of the ore; results show good agreement between mineral estimation via chemical analysis and modal analysis using a Mineral Liberation Analyser. A bulk mineralogical analyser allowing semi-quantitative evaluation of the liberation of iron oxides is being validated. The results from the bulk mineralogical analyser will eventually be linked with the mineral proportions issued by the automated modal tool to provide complete mineralogical characteristics of iron ore samples. Ultimately, these mineralogical tools could provide valuable and timely insight for predicting concentrators’ performances or troubleshooting gravity separation processes.

The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. "The Windarra nickel deposits display many of the characteristics that typify Archaean volcanic peridotite-associated nickel sulphide ores of Western Australia. The Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization, which comprises dominantly disseminated sulphides, occurs at the base of a differentiated ultramafic volcanic pile grading upwards from massive meta-peridotitic flows to thin, locally spinifex-textured meta-picritic units. The entire mafic-ultramafic belt has been subjected to mid-amphibolite- facies metamorphism. The ore-bearing ultramafic is immediately underlain by dominantly sulphide-facies banded iron formation (BIF), which commonly contains nickel sulphides adjacent to its contact with mineralized ultramafic. BIF-hosted ores are formed both by physical remobilization of ultramafic-hosted sulphides and by migration of Ni and Cu into pre-existing iron sulphides.At Mt. Windarra the mineralization comprises eight steeply dipping, steeply plunging elongate oreshoots, which display a marked parallelism with major and minor fold structures in the underlying BIF. Seven of the shoots occur at or close to the base of the ultramafic pile, and are hosted by at least three overlapping flows. The zone of overlap occurs at the northern end of each flow, where picritic ultramafic, representing a dominantly liquid portion of the flow, occupies the basal contact. A gross south- north ultramafic flow direction is inferred. The eighth shoot occurs in a stratigraphically higher position within the ultramafic sequence.At South Windarra at least two overlapping mineralized flows occupy the basal contact, the ore zone having a strike extent three to four times its downdip extent. There is no obvious structural control to the mineralization."

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."
