A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. Ventilation of underground workings consists in establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; and requires that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from these workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and that, at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically-operated fans, together with other;. ventilating devices such as doors, over-casts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural air flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion, mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them. While ventilation has practically always been deemed an integral part of coal mining, metal mines have rarely paid much, if any, attention to air circulation until forced to do so by occurrence of some untoward condition or accident. Yet metal mines actually have as great need of efficient circulation of air as have coal mines. The coal mine must remove the dangerous explosive gas, methane, also fumes from explosives and, in occasional places, other gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

O chamote é um resíduo proveniente da indústria cerâmica, classificado como material não-plástico. Tal rejeito pode ser retornado ao processo de produção de cerâmicas, substituindo parte da matéria-prima convencional. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a incorporação de chamote nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas de peças cerâmicas sob três temperaturas de queima distintas: 850°C, 950°C e 1050°C. As matérias-primas utilizadas na pesquisa foram caracterizadas quanto à granulometria, limites de consistência e composição química por meio de EDX. Foram propostas três misturas, contendo 0%, 13,33% e 40% do resíduo. Corpos de prova prismáticos foram produzidos por prensagem e, após, realizou-se os ensaios de determinação da retração na queima, índice de absorção de água e resistência à flexão. Os resultados revelam que, quanto maior a temperatura, maior a retração linear na queima e a resistência à flexão em todas as misturas. Em relação à absorção, foram observados menores valores a 1050°C, devido ao processo de vitrificação. Verificou-se que a adição de chamote reduz a retração; no entanto, reduz também a resistência mecânica. Dentre as misturas com resíduo, a composição com 13,33% apresentou melhores resultados, sobretudo sob a temperatura de 1050°C.

Provide a full-scale test facility where the effectiveness of all types of subsidence abatement techniques can be evaluated under controlled conditions. Background Subsidence is ground movement resulting from the collapse of overlying strata into a mine void because of failure of the mine roof, mine floor, or support pillars. The failure may propagate to the surface and be expressed as a depression, cracks, or a sinkhole. The surface expression of such features may be delayed until long after mining has been completed. Subsidence has the potential to affect more land area than any other type of abandoned mine land problem. Subsidence also causes direct damage to real property, with significant financial loss and more importantly, presents a danger to public health, safety, and general welfare. Subsidence-related problems are considered to be one of the most important abandoned mine land issues. Backfilling of mine voids is the most common stabilization method used to abate subsidence and protect surface structures. Backfilling or placement of material is performed by hydraulic flushing or pneumatic stowing, using either in-mine or remote methods. The majority of the past subsidence abatement projects has been performed using remote methods from single or multiple boreholes. Other subsidence abatement techniques arc available. For example, various point support methods are used to protect small areas of the land surface and surface structures, without completely filling the mine void. These may be more appropriate under different conditions. Little documented information is available concerning the capability of the various backfilling methods for completely filling a mine void or providing long-term structural strength. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines developed a laboratory for controlled evaluation of backfilling technologies.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.

Development of an efficient technology to process complex ores containing gold and antimony as well as silver is described in the paper. The results from the testwork aimed at the valuables recovery by means of flotation are presented. A process sample of antimonite gold-bearing ore was studied in TOMS institute aiming at development of a technology to process such an ore with generation of antimony concentrate and sulphide gold-containing concentrate. Material composition study indicated that the ore included 5.3% of sulphides: arsenopyrite – 2.4%, pyrite -2.4%, and antimonite – 0.5%. Gold is present as an isomorphic dissemination in arsenopyrite. At sighter testing stage a direct selective flotation flowsheet was chosen to process the ore. Antimonite flotation was activated due to addition of lead nitrate. A single cleaning of a rougher flotation concentrate resulted in antinomy concentrate with 30% Sb content and 71% recovery. Au recovery into antimony concentrate did not exceed 1%. Sb flotation tailings were used to float the remaining sulphides and gold. The resulted sulphide concentrate was characterized by Au content of 20 g/t at about 80% recovery, arsenic content - 10% at ~80% recovery, and sulphur content - 18% at ~81% recovery. The sulphide concentrate can be forwarded to further processing aiming at gold recovery. Given that the concentrate is highly refractory it should be pretreated (bacterial or pressure oxidation, Albion process) prior to cyanidation in order to liberate gold from sulphides. The proposed technology allows one to solve the problem of precious metals recovery from antimonite ores.

Whether one accepts this statement or not, it is self-evident that an ability to interpret phase equilibria is essential to the professional metallurgists.The physical chemistry studies of iron and steelmaking process often require phase diagrams of FeO-containing slags. Iso-thermal section of the phase· diagrams of such systems can be derived from experimental data for chemical potentials of FeO. Due to the recent developments in the area of solid state electrochemistry, rapid determinations of the FeO activities have become possible. The present paper is aimed at documenting the derivation of the phase diagrams of FeO containing slags.Experimental AspectsAn electrochemical method incorporating stabilized zirconia can be used for the measurements of the activities of FeO in various slags and fluxes[2]. "Abstract - The Domeyko Cordillera, the westernmost uplifted crustal block of the composite High Andes of northern Chile (20°S to 28°S) hosts a narrow N-S trending belt of Late Eocene-Oligocene giant porphyry copper deposits, which include Collahuasi, Chuquicamata, El Abra, La Escondida, and El Salvador. These deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the closing igneous activity along this range, prior to a 30 km eastward jump of the magmatic front in response to tectonic plate interaction. The porphyry copper deposits are also spatially associated with a major intraarc strike-slip shear system, the Domeyko Fault System. Although the tectonic uplift of the 3000 m to 5000 m high range has generally been assumed to be mostly Miocene in age, field relationships suggest that the Domeyko Fault System and tectonic uplift were active as early as the Eocene, coinciding with porphyry copper emplacement between 41 Ma and 30 Ma. Apatite fission track (FT) thermochronology provides both age data and a time-temperature history for rocks since they cooled below a temperature of ca. 125°C (equivalent to a depth of 4 km to 5 km under normal geothermal gradients) on their way to the surface during exhumation, or after a heating event. Apatite FT data from the Paleozoic crystalline basement of the Domeyko Cordillera indicate that at least 4 km to 5 km of rocks were eroded during exhumation of this tectonic block between ca. 50 Ma to 30 Ma (Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene), a time that immediately precedes and overlaps with the emplacement of giant porphyry copper deposits. The FT data constrain the age and duration of a period of crustal thickening and extensive erosion known as the Incaic compression, an event recognized in the Andes of Chile and Peru. Assuming that cooling was due to denudation alone, modelling of the FT data allow estimation of denudation rates between 200 and 100 m/My during this period. In contrast, exposures of pre-porphyry Paleocene intrusives on the western edge of the Domeyko Cordillera reveal apatite FT ages that are concordant with biotite 40Ar-39Ar dates, indicating shallow emplacement, fast cooling and negligible exhumation. The apatite FT ages of the Chuquicamata and El Abra porphyry copper deposits are only marginally younger than their 40Ar-39Ar dates, implying fast cooling/exhumation of shallow mineralizing systems (ca. 2 km to 3 km). Their FT time-temperature history is compatible with extremely low rates of exhumation (ca. 50 m/My) since about 30 Ma (Early Oligocene). This limited extent of erosion, due to exceptional aridity, has greatly contributed to the preservation of rich supergene enriched blankets above some of the porphyry copper deposits.A model is proposed, which is consistent with field relationships, geochemical, and geochronological data. High relative velocities and intermediate-angle oblique convergence between the Nazca and South American plates in the Eocene-Early Oligocene led to intra-arc transpression partitioned into reverse faults of opposing vergence and a right-lateral shear system (the Domeyko Shear System) localized along the magmatic front. Crustal shortening and thickening led to uplift within the Domeyko Fault System and to erosion of at least 4 km to 5 km. Crustal thickening deepened the zone of magma generation, and magmas accumulated in the lower crust, allowing small volumes to rise rapidly to shallow levels along transtensional domains of the regional shear system. A similar model of crustal thickening and shortening before and during porphyry copper emplacement in zones of transtension may also apply to the Miocene-Pliocene giant porphyry copper province of central Chile."

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

The change of gas emission or concentration level at the working face is one of the main precursor characteristics of coal and gas outburst. At present, coal and gas outburst monitoring and early warning are mainly based on whether it exceeds the limit and its change law. However, the gas concentration level is affected by factors such as coal seam gas content, permeability, and mining process, and the change law is complex to recognize manually. In this paper, the response characteristics of gas concentration level in the mining process are analyzed and revealed, and a bidirectional long short-term memory model is established. The change characteristics of the gas concentration level in the mining and non-mining processes are studied and recognized. The results show that the change law of gas concentration in the mining process has apparent periodicity and trapezoidal volatility. The proposed intelligent recognition method based on the bidirectional long short-term memory neural network can automatically recognize the underground mining and non-mining processes, and the recognition accuracy achieves 97.7% . The research can significantly help improve the level of coal mine safety management and the accuracy of early warning of coal and gas outburst.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

Early solvent extraction circuits in the uranium industry utilized bona fide kerosenes as diluents for extractant chemicals. These kerosenes were used successfully in the uranium industry; however, at least one plant was destroyed by fire resulting from the use of a low flash point kerosene. Although the term "kerosene" is used throughout the solvent extraction industry, the authors have been unable to find any use of kerosene in copper solvent extraction circuits. A term that is occasionally used with reference to diluents is "metallurgical kerosene." Such a term is unrecognizable in the petroleum industry. Kerosene [or kerosine] is a flammable hydrocarbon mixture that is less volatile than gasoline. It is produced for combustion purposes and may have variable compositions of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkines, and aromatics. Diluents are constant composition hydrocarbon mixtures developed specifically for use in solvent extraction processes. These products usually have much lower vapor pressures and higher flash points than kerosene. In solvent extraction systems, they typically comprise 70 to 95 v/o percent of the circuit organic. The primary purpose of the diluent is to adjust the extractant concentration to the working range of the operation. The diluent and extractant must be completely soluble or miscible with each other. Secondary diluent effects are to promote transfer kinetics, optimize phase disengagement, and minimize both organic in aqueous and aqueous in organic entrainment.

"INTRODUCTIONNSCC International Ltd. carried out the enabling works and constructed the foundation system for the Emirates Pearl Tower and Bab El Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Pearl Tower is a joint venture project of TDIC- Tourism Development and Investment Company and ATLAS group, a leading telecommunication company in the UAE. Bab El Qasr Hotel is a project of EMROC Emirate-Moroccan General Trading & Investment Company. The combined enabling project is executed under the combined management of JACOBS International Holdings Inc. and NASSAR Engineering Services.The project is located to the south-east of Emirates Palace and west of Etihad towers, at about 20m away from the sea shore. Since the two projects are located next to each other a combined shoring system was constructed for the entire area. This decision was based on an agreement with clients and consultants of the two projects and resulted in significant savings for both parties. The shoring system consisted mainly of diaphragm wall with ground anchors and steel struts. Cantilever secant piles were used on the eastern side of the plot, adjacent to Etihad Towers` basement.PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORKNSCC International Ltd. was responsible for the design, procurement and construction of strutted and anchored diaphragm walls and cantilever secant piles. The shoring layout and a summary of shoring sections are shown below."

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

A brief review of the rapid growth of ACT in Western Canada is presented. It is remarked that this rap-id growth has been accompanied by a heterogeneous approach to design. A more rational and consistent approach is suggested, together with the assumptions on which this approach is based. The operating history of some existing installations is discussed briefly, and conditions necessary for the continued growth of ACT are outlined.

"INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."
