"The land-pebble district, the larger of the two producing areas of Florida, is situated in Polk County and in the eastern part of Hillsborough County. About 80 per cent at the phosphate rock produced in the United States in recent years has been mined from this area. The phosphate ores, locally termed matrix. are beds of sands and clays containing the phosphate pebbles, considered to be Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying Miocene phosphatic marls, and are covered by practically barren sands and clays that have been deposited more recently. Open-pit mining is practiced; hydraulic mining, which has been intensively developed in this district, is used exclusively for mining the matrix and, by some companies for removing the overburden, although drag-line excavators have become established and are proving economical for stripping operations. From the pits the matrix is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The product of the washers. after drying, enters the world markets as Florida pebble phosphate.In this district recovery of the phosphate pebbles by the washing plants has not been particularly effective in the past. The screening, designed to effect a seperation at about 20 mesh (0.033 inches), has not been well controlled. Washer rejects discarded to the waste dumps have contained appreciable amounts of material analyzing above the minimum commercial grade - 66 per cent B.P.L. (bone phosphate of lime). Such losses of commercial fractions should be considered avoidable, and have been discussed at length in a previous paper.3"

The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.

Phase I of the Canary Wharf development in London's docklands involves the construction of six fifteen storey buildings located predominantly over water of the West India Docks. The buildings are supported on some 1000 No., 25m long, open ended steel tubular piles driven through 10m of dock water to found in dense sand at a depth of about 15m below dock bed level. The piles are of composite section with reinforced concrete within the upper 17m of the steel tube. Three trial piles were installed in the dock to investigate the driveability and performance of the driven steel tubular piles. The piles were subjected to dynamic and static load testing. Loads were applied in both vertical and horizontal directions. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed on the inside of the steel piles, on the reinforcement and in the concrete to determine the relative proportions of the applied load carried by the steel tube and concrete infill and to establish how these proportions varied along the length of the piles. Inclinometers were also installed to monitor the lateral deflection of the piles. This paper describes the driving, construction and testing of the three trial piles. The results of the vertical and horizontal loading tests are discussed and comparisons are made between dynamic and static tests carried out on the piles.

This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

Procedures of mining high-calcium limestone underground at the Kimballton mine of the Standard Lime and Cement Co. in Giles County, west-central Virginia, are described. Drilling and blasting procedures arc discussed in detail, and direct mining costs are tabulated in percentage of total cost. Output, about 1,725 tons of limestone a day, is attained with heavy trackless equipment by the room and pillar method of ruining; modified by benching floors. Operating features include underground air compression, electric-eye control of curtained doorways, use of a single jumbo drill rig for all drilling, and an effective plan for maintenance of equipment. The company's safety program has contributed to an outstanding safe mining record. The mina is integrated with a plant on the property which converts the stone to metallurgical and chemical grade lime.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.

The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

Due to the environmental constraints and the limitations on blasting, ripping as a ground loosening and breaking method has become more popular in both mining and civil engineering applications. Because of the technological advances in dozer manufacturing techniques, more powerful dozer types are available today. Thus, the ground, previously classified as non-rippable, has become rippable. As a consequence, a more applicable rippability classification system is needed which considers both equipment properties as well as rock properties in all applications. This paper is part of a complementary research work and presents the development of a previously published grading rippability classification system by the application of fuzzy set theory. The integrated rippability classification system considers the combined utilization of the rock and equipment properties, as well as expert opinion. Fuzzy set theory was chosen mainly because it deals well with uncertainty in the choice of variables. Although there are apparent sharp or discontinuous boundaries in existing classification systems, practically most of the factors involved in the ripping process are less well defined and boundaries are more blurred (or fuzzy) or uncertain in nature. Also by means of fuzzy logic it is possible to eliminate bias or subjectivity. The validity of the proposed system was checked by the comparison against existing classification systems and direct ripping production values obtained at studied sites. It is seen that by means of fuzzy logic, the uncertainties are reduced and biased usage of the final ratings that appear in alternative systems are efficiently dealt with. It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

This paper focuses on two sites in the Mount Pleasant - McCormacks Bay area of Christchurch where residential development has taken place either within or immediately adjacent to former quarries for the extraction of volcanic rock. At the Quarry Road site less overburden was dumped on adjoining land around the turn of the century, and c.1980 dwelling and related construction took place on approximately 6 m of relatively loose fill material without the recognition of its presence or geotechnical characteristics. Subsequent settlements led to abandonment of a swimming pool and the underpinning of the 3-storey architect-designed house, whilst litigation brought by the owner resulted in findings of negligence against both the architects and engineers. At the Tramways Quarry site the Council approved subdivision of the former quarry area in the early 1980s without requiring any geotechnical evaluation of batter stability or related issues. During development it became apparent that significant blast damage had occurred to rock faces, necessitating a variety of remedial measures, and that waste materials had been dumped down faces without regard to long-term stability. Both case studies confirm the requirement for careful documentation of former quarry sites by territorial local authorities as part of their administrative function, and for detailed engineering geology and geotechnical evaluation of such areas prior to any residential use of the land.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5). "Microseismic monitoring technology has become one of the most effective method of mine ground pressure monitoring after decades of development. But safety assessment of mine ground pressure by using microseismic monitoring is still in the development stage, it needs to be perfected continuously in practice, and choose the optimal assessment indexes and methods. The definitions and physical meanings of wave velocity, b value, and EI-VA value are introduced in this paper. Statistical calculation of the microseismic events in Luomu Mine is finished by using these indexes, then the functions and calculation results of V, b value, and EI-VA value with the variable of time are also given in the paper. The preliminary safety assessment method is established in Luomu Mine, and it has achieved good results in practical application.1.1 Engineering background The Luomu Mine is a super large molybdenum and tungsten production base in China, ore reserves is up to 2 billion tons, first in Asia and third in the world. It begins mining since the 1960. and bases on underground mining until 2002. In order to recover resources more effectively, it began to use opencast mining method and formed a production of 30000t/d in the early 1990. After about 30 years of underground mining, a large mined out spaces was formed under open pit mine, up to area of 1.2 million m2 and volume of 18 million m3, as shown in figure 1. The large number of mined out spaces seriously affects the normal production, mining and handling of mined out spaces are in the high risk. In the past years, several rock mass collapsions happened, and it caused a serious security threat to persons and equipments. According to the distribution characteristics of mined out spaces, Luomu Mine is divided into A, B, C, D and E mining area. The stability of D mining area is studied in this article. D mining area mainly includes 1376,1350,1340,1317 mined out spaces and 1280 deep large mined out area, as shown in figure 2. The mined out spaces of D mining area is extremely complex and high-risk. Therefore, a microseismic monitoring system was built to monitor the stability of D mining area, a large number of valuable datum has been obtained, and it has a striking effect (Cheng & Peng, 2013; Peng et al., 2013)."

Computers have revolutionized the collection of data on modern mines. Never before has it been possible to collect data from all aspects of the mining value chain at rates now common. With this has come a new challenge. Deriving information from these copious amounts of data and disseminating it. This problem is being exacerbated by technical software systems, which use proprietary and binary data formats that severely inhibit the flow of data and information both across departments and the larger organization. Generally this had led to data duplication and data redundancy. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS) makes use of industry standard, secure and open databases for all its data objects. It manages multiple users accessing the same bits and bytes in the database, preventing data duplication and redundancy. Developed in the Microsoft BackOffice ® environment, GEMS is also able to leverage the enormous amount of tools available in this environment, whether it’s for e-mail notification, reporting or data capture. Microsoft’s® Active Server Pages are one of these tools. These are standards used to create dynamic and interactive web pages with links into databases and many other objects. The real example outlined in the text, demonstrates how a user anywhere in the world is able to login to a web page and run a query that returns a report with vector plots of performance for the user-selected time frame. As integration is tightened between the various components of the mining value chain, the importance and reliance on ASP pages will grow as the need for management information tools develops.
