The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between titanium-oxygen solid solutions and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined at high temperatures. In the alpha phase, the reaction rate decreases uniformly with the increasing concentration of oxygen. The gamma crystalline form of titanium (above 33 atomic percent oxygen) was much less reactive than the alpha phase, and the reaction rate approached zero at 50 atomic percent oxygen. The activation energy for the reaction of titanium-oxygen solution containing 22.8 percent oxygen was 11.7 kcal/mole of TiCl3 as compared with 8.3 kcal/mole of TiCl3 for pure titanium.

In Europe, 50% of the copper originates from recycling. High-Cu containing scraps are regularly rich in impurities like Fe, Ni, Sn and Pb. Many high-Cu containing scraps are fed directly into anode-furnace casting installations or furnaces with limited refining capability. The impurities levels of the anodes produced in these processes should however remain acceptable for further electro-refining. The distribution of Sn between copper and slag has been investigated for conditions relevant to copper converting. Unlike previous studies, this work focuses on the behavior of Sn relevant to fire refining conditions, which are essential for anode refineries.In this study, liquid Cu–1Sn and CuOx–FeOy–SiO2 slag, with CaO additions, were equilibrated at 1300 °C in vacuum sealed SiO2 ampoules. After metal–slag equilibration, the samples were quenched in water. The composition of the slag and Cu metal was investigated with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis. The distribution coefficients of Sn between slag and Cu metal were determined as a function of slag composition.

"Estimation of stress state as well as elastic modulus is important for the prediction of a rock slope deformation in an open pit mine since it can strongly influence the mining-induced deformation of the rock slope. This study applies a method to evaluate regional stress state and Young’s modulus by analysing the mining-induced deformation of ground. The effect of changes in regional strain state due to tectonic plate motion can be accounted for using the proposed method. Mining-induced deformation can manifest itself as changes in ground surface geometry resulting from mining activity. There are three underlying factors that can contribute to the deformation: displacement induced by the effect of gravity displacement induced by the effect of horizontal regional strain incremental change in the horizontal regional strain. The relative displacement arising from the mining excavation at the Torigatayama limestone mine in Japan has been measured by Global Positioning System (GPS). Both the regional stress state and Young’s modulus were estimated by back analysis of the change in distance between GPS stations using a 3D finite element method. It was shown that the reliability of the estimation improved with an increase in displacement due to mining progression. It was also shown that values for Poisson’s ratios of less than 0.10 are reasonable estimates with values for Young’s modulus between about 5?GPa and 10 GPa. The magnitude and direction of the maximum compressive stress in the district surrounding the Torigatayama mine were estimated to be between -6.4 MPa and -4.4 MPa and around N25E respectively.CITATION:Kodama, J, Sasaki, T, Fukuda, D, Kaneko, K, Fujii, Y and Kudo, R, 2014. Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.

PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

Inorganic acids such as sulphuric acid have found use together with certain reducing agents in leaching of copper-cobalt oxide ores. These reagents are not ideal due to the adverse effect the inorganic acids generally have on the environment and the high costs of the reducing agents. In this study a copper-cobalt oxide ore from the Central African Copperbelt was leached in two different environments; sulphuric acid in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent and tartaric acid. The effects of acid concentration, reducing agent concentration, and temperature were independently determined for both leaching environments. The sulphuric acid concentration was varied between 0.4 M and 1.2 M and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide between 4.0 M and 6.5 M, while the tartaric acid concentration was varied between 0.15 M and 0.35 M. The temperature was varied between 20°C and 50°C. The results showed that the extraction of both copper and cobalt increased with sulphuric acid concentration, reaching a peak at approximately 0.8 M and then decreasing at higher acid concentrations. A similar increase and decrease in metal extraction was observed when the reducing agent was increased. In leaching with tartaric acid, the extraction of cobalt was much higher than that of copper, although extraction of both metals increased with acid concentration. Additions of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide were found to increase cobalt extraction in tartaric acid but had a minimal effect on copper. An increase in the solution temperature had a significant effect in the organic acid environment, with the effect on cobalt extraction being much more pronounced than on copper.

"It is accepted widely that pressure oxidation (POX) is the most appropriate technology for processing of arsenic containing refractory gold ores. However, studies on the stability of various iron-arsenic precipitates formed during POX are limited. Since the behaviour of these phases could have significant practical implications for gold processing plants, it is important to study them in isolation. This paper compares two synthetic precipitates, basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) and basic ferric sulphate (BFS) in terms of their formation, behaviour during hot curing and cyanidation, as well as their environmental stability. BFS and BFAS were synthesised hydrothermally at 205°C and their mineralogy was confirmed using various techniques. During synthesis, the addition of H3AsO4 into an aqueous Fe2(SO4)3-H2SO4 mixture significantly decreased the iron yield to BFAS in comparison to BFS under equimolar initial iron and acid concentrations. The BFAS dissolution kinetics was slightly faster, as compared to BFS, during subsequent hot curing. Cyanidation test work on the washed synthetic precipitates indicated that the lime consumption of BFAS was three times lower in comparison to BFS, while cyanide consumptions were comparable. Fresh BFS and BFAS precipitates, as well as their cyanidation residues, were found to pass the respective environmental tests in terms of arsenic release.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is generally viewed as the most appropriate technology for the processing of arsenic-containing refractory gold ores due to the stabilisation of arsenic in the leach residue (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008; Harris, 2003; Collins, Berezowsky, & Weir, 1988). Detailed laboratory studies indicated that several Fe(III)-arsenate type compounds may be formed under typical conditions of autoclave treatment of refractory gold ores (Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2010; Gomez, Becze, Cutler, & Demopoulos, 2011). The basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) phase (Gomez et al., 2008), also known as Type II ferric arsenate (Swash & Monhemius, 1994) or Phase 3 (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007), is one of the most common arsenic-bearing products (Harris, 2003; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007). BFAS precipitation is viewed as one of the best routes for arsenic stabilisation and performed equally well to scorodite during environmental stability tests (Harris, 2003; Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2011)."

The Luossavaara "Research Mine" is the First large, offensive effort in mining research conducted by the Swedish state. Over a 5-year period, 1981-1985, the Swedish Mining Research Foundation works in the "Research Mine" on the development of mining systems and equipment. The purpose is to bolster the competitive strength of the Swedish mining and mining equipment industry. The previosly abandoned Luossavaara mine in Kiruna, in northern Sweden, has been reopened especially For the project. Ore is mined and sold during the course of the research project. The income from the sales covers a large portion of the costs for teh research.

The Iron and Steel Committee of the American Institute, of mining and Metallurgical Engineers held a joint session with the American Foundrymen's Association during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1928, for the purpose of discussing blast-furnace operations and the character of pig iron and castings. Dr. Richard Moldenke presided. H.. H. Sweetser, who was named on the program as the presiding officer of the session, was unable to be present, but sent a letter in which he said: " The meeting we had here last year and the meeting held in Chicago last June showed a desire on the part of blast-furnace men and users of pig iron to get the facts regarding the influence on castings made from pig iron produced in blast furnaces under varying conditions of temperature, mixture and local furnace operations. It has been my hope that at this Round Table we might he able to formulate a series of tests that, would give us the desired information. "Several independent blast-furnace investigations have. been, and still are being, carried on in different sections of the country. The furnaces investigated include a southern furnace, a middle-west furnace, a western furnace and a Chicago district furnace. The results so far show distinct characteristics for each of the four furnaces. It is possible that a furnace in the eastern part of the United States would be different from all the others. "It is hoped that a plan of action can be worked out at your meeting today whereby the IT. S. Bureau of Mines will be able, to carry on more extensive work in connection with the research departments of the different iron and steel companies and the big consumers of pig iron. "No one group can get all of the, information but if the different investigations can be coordinated it will he possible for us to (Iran. conclusions regarding the effects of varying conditions in blast-furnace practice on the pig iron produced and the castings made there from." The definition of geological/geostatistical domains is the first step in building a mineral resource model. A suitable division for these domains requires some prior knowledge about the deposit geology and can be supported by a careful statistical analysis. It is crucial that data with similar characteristics are grouped together, to avoid the mixing of statistical populations, defining the so-called stationary domains. In order to assist in this definition, two unsupervised clustering algorithms were applied: Otsu and K-means. The first one is widely used in image segmentation and it is based on the exhaustive search of the data to determine the best threshold for separating them. K-means is one of the most used techniques in machine learning, and it is based on the iterative analysis of the statistical distribution. Clustering algorithms may present some shortcomings when applied to geological data, since they are based on pure statistical analysis, not considering spatial distribution or data location. Choosing the most appropriate number of domains can also be challenging. Some methods for defining the best number of groups are presented, based on the analysis of variances between/inside groups, supported by indicators variography in order to verify this definition.

Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.

Posteriormente dichos yacimientos piritosos son transformados hasta atravesar los plegamientos, fallamientos, intrusiones y la mineralización cretásico-terciaria. En este sentido, el presente texto señala la reinterpretación genética de dichos yacimientos, considerando las evidencias volcanogénicas, el volumen general de mineral que contienen, distribución y su importancia económica que tienen en la región central del Perú.

All types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly proportional to the phosphorus content. Significance of Fluorine in Phosphate Rock On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Cal10F2(PO4)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock. The available data1 indicate that the different commercial types of domestic phosphate rock usually contain about 12 to 52 per cent more fluorine than theoretically is required to form fluorapatite with all the phosphorus. Calcium fluoride (fluorite) has been definitely identified in only a very few of the samples that have been examined1,2. "A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

"The IsaMill™ was originally developed to address liberation issues at Mount Isa Mines (now Glencore) operations, McArthur River and Mount Isa in the early 1990s. Following on from the industrial success at those operations, the IsaMill™ was commercialised. In the year 2000, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became the first external user of the technology with a 1.1 MW M3000 IsaMill™ installed to supplement the roaster capacity at its Gidji Processing Plant. The IsaMill™ was used to ultra-fine grind about 10 t/h of pyrite flotation concentrate to 10–12 µm prior to gold cyanide leaching. Based on the success of the Gidji installation, another was installed at the processing plant at KCGM’s Fimiston operation in 2002 in a similar duty.In 2014, a 3 MW M10 000 IsaMill™ was selected to replace the roasters at Gidji as part of the A$98 M emissions reduction project. The mill was commissioned in April 2015 at the design 30 t/h, allowing the immediate shutdown of the two roasters. Replacement of roasting with ultra-fine grinding completely eliminated air emissions at Gidji while maintaining overall plant production rates.This paper details the history of the IsaMill™ at KCGM from the original M3000 to the latest M10 000. The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).
