Many flotation kinetics models have been studied in the literature. Their applicability was extensively investigated and argued in detail. However, model selection criteria were not adequately discussed from the statistical points of view. In this investigation, the kinetic behavior of a complex copper sulfide ore was studied in a mechanical Denver flotation cell focusing on flotation kinetics of chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite. Different flotation kinetics models including nine common empirical models and four mathematical models namely Hill, Chapman (Sigmodial function), single rectangular (Hyperbola equation) and exponential were applied to the experimental data. In addition to assessment of the goodness of fit criterion for each model, a factor of model complexity was considered using information criteria (IC) (i.e. Bayesian information (BIC), low of iterated logarithm (LILC) and Akaike information (AIC) indices). The obtained results showed that the IC indices could simply manifest the best-fitted model to the experimental data. Whereas, the coefficient of determination values (R2) were relatively same for all models. By taking the R2 and model complexity criteria into account, the exponential model was chosen as the best representative mathematical model to demonstrate chalcopyrite kinetic behavior. However, Chapman model was selected as the best one for the flotation of pyrite and molybdenite. In case of the common first-order flotation kinetics models, fast and slow flotation kinetic model (Kelsall) was reasonably fitted the best to the given data of chalcopyrite. However, the gas/solid kinetics adsorption model was chosen as the best-fitted one for pyrite and molybdenite. Furthermore, it was found that mathematical models represent better results in association with flotation kinetic behavior of chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite due to the consideration of more parameters in modeling. Finally, it was concluded that the IC indices must be applied to the process of model selection due to consideration of goodness of fit, complexity of a model and model consistency.

"Heap leaching is well-established as a relatively low-cost and low-energy method of extracting metals from low grade ores. However, the design methodology, attention to the engineering details during heap construction and the long time scale in metal recovery makes the process susceptible to significant variation in the success of a heap leach operation. Often the laboratory predicted recovery rates are not achieved on site due to poor understanding of the complex physics of flow and coupled solid-liquid-thermal reactions within the multi-dimensional heterogeneous ore body. Given the large scale of commercial operations, small changes in metal recovery can substantially change the operating profitability. While there are a variety of approaches to heap leach modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling coupled with leach kinetic models offers a methodology to describe and understand the complexities of heap leaching. The CFD model uses leach kinetics specific for the mineralogy of the ore, including gangue chemistry, and provides an energy balance to calculate and predict temperature. Coupled with the CFD model’s inherent capability for modeling complex fluid flow, the physics and the chemistry of the heap can be simulated. This provides a tool for engineering design, as well as forecasting heap production under different scenarios. The calibrated model is used to simulate a three-dimensional test heap under fluctuating meteorological data, such as precipitation events, periodic solution application, and notably temperature. These simulations provide support for a methodology to design and engineer heap leaching of low grade copper sulfide ore. INTRODUCTION Worldwide copper ore reserves are faced with decreasing head grades with copper sulfides, particularly chalcopyrite being the predominant mineralogy (Nesse, 2000). Heap leaching offers an economical way to recover copper from low grade ore. The ore is stacked and a leach solution is applied and allowed to trickle though the porous bed of ore to extract target metals. The heap can be built with run of mine material or crushed ore and is constructed in order to achieve percolation of the leach solution to all regions. Bartlett (1998) provides an authoritative overview of the solution mining process where the leach solution interacts with the solid, the lixiviant dissolves the target minerals from the solid into the solution, and the dissolved species are transported out of the heap for subsequent recovery. Petersen (2016) provides a recent review of heap leach technology and emerging and potential future applications, and Ghorbani et al. (2016) summarizes the current state and challenges of the technology. Early applications of heap leaching offered a low cost technique to achieve high recoveries from oxide ores, typically greater than 70% depending upon the kinetics of reaction. As world copper resources transition to mainly copper sulfide mineralogy, such as chalcopyrite based ores, achieving high recovery from these copper sulfide deposits is proving more difficult due to the complexity of the leach kinetics, which leads to low leaching efficiency."

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. The investigation described in this publication was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of the anionic silica flotation method on goethitic iron-bearing materials from the Cuyuna Range, Minn. Samples used in this investigation were a composite of drill core from 13 holes, and 3 samples from lean ore stockpiles. These samples are believed to be typical of the mineralization occurring in an area with a potential reserve of several million tans of submarginal iron ore. Results from batch tests showed that the iron-bearing minerals could be effectively concentrated by flotation removal of the siliceous gangue. The drill hole composite yielded laboratory flotation concentrates from locked tests containing 56.8 percent Fe and 6.1 percent silica, with an accompanying iron unit recovery of 94.2 percent. Concentrates containing 52.4 to 53.7 percent Fe also were produced from the lean ore stockpile materials; corresponging iron recoveries ranged from 71 to 79 percent in the batch tests, with the possibility remaining for additional recovery of iron from the middlings.

Many thickener operations continue to be constrained by their ability to process consolidated underflows with high yield stress and associated rheological characteristics. To maximise separation efficiencies within a thickener operation the use of both engineering and reagents are always considered. BASF is developing a Novel Flocculant Technology (NFT), which combines both of these aspects to enhance the performance of the thickener operation, improving the areas of pumping efficiency, underflow density and throughput. The development progression through stages of laboratory scale batch test work to pilot scale dynamic testing has demonstrated the ability of BASF NFT to maintain effective flocculation performance whilst increasing the rate of underflow consolidation, and significantly reducing the associated underflow yield stress of the treated material. This paper will present application data through full scale dynamic testing conducted on a granite washing circuit to demonstrate the performance benefits that NFT offers to a thickener operation. Compared to the conventional flocculant treatment, within the operation parameters and conditions employed during the full scale trials, the NFT produced a reduction in underflow rheology (yield stress) of around 45 % relative to a given solids and improved the underflow consolidation by providing at least 20% relative higher underflow solids loading than the upper limit of the given typical thickener operation. "Purpose and Nature of Tests:The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles and trucks in the United States is creating an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation of tunnels, subways and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass. This problem has become of immediate importance because a tunnel 3,000 ft. long is being designed to pass under the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey. Another tunnel at Pittsburgh 5,700 ft. long through the South Hills, is already under construction, and a third tunnel, 6,000 ft. between Boston and Past Boston is proposed. It is probably that other tunnels will be started in various parts of the United States in the near future.The ventilation of such tunnels is a serious matter, on account of the poisonous nature of automobile exhaust gases. It not uncommon to read about finding a man dead in his garage. Generally this happens on a cold, winter morning, after he has been running the engine with the doors and windows closed."

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

This report deals with the effectiveness and economy of installing mine timbers treated with preservatives in long-life service locations. Early in the present century, when mine timbers and labor were plentiful, it was not general practice to install treated timbers in such places. Because national sources of good mine timber are declining steadily, the mining industry must now conserve timber. Moreover, the cost of installing and replacing mine timbers has been rising. Therefore, even the simplest of treatments can be expected to give some return on the investment when applied to timbers that are to be installed in relatively permanent locations. Better methods of treatment will produce better returns. In a service test of maple timbers treated by the hot-and cold-bath method and installed in main haulageways of the Athens mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., Negaunee, Mich., zinc chloride-treated timbers had an average useful life of 13.3 years; borax-treated timbers, 11.2 years; and sodium fluoride-treated timbers, 7.7 years. Untreated timbers used as controls had an average useful life of 3.8 years.

Materiais poliméricos sofrem danos estruturais ao serem submetidos à radiação X. Estes danos podem causar reticulação, quebra de ligações entre outros danos. Em diversos serviços de radiodiagnostico e de radioterapia é utilizado placa de etileno vinil acetato, EVA, para auxiliar o posicionamento de pacientes crianças ate 2 anos em radiografias de tórax. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se este material é adequado para ser utilizado nestes serviços. Para tanto, amostras do material foram submetidas a dose de 25 kGy e avaliados por espectrometria de infra vermelho com transformada de Fourier, e a superfície por medidas de rugosidade e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicam que o material apresenta degradação com dose de 5 kGy e aumento da rugosidade.

The stability of key strata is of utmost importance in ensuring safe and effective coal seam mining operations. To minimize disturbance impacts on these strata and ensure their stability, it is crucial to assess the degree of disturbance caused by mining activities. This study proposes the evaluation index “disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD)” and establishes a quantitative KSDD criterion to measure the degree of disturbance on key strata. To facilitate the assessment process, an intelligent calculation system for KSDD is developed. The classification criteria are derived by combining the measured three-zone heights from multiple mines. The reliability and accuracy of the KSDD quantitative criterion are validated using field measurement data. Furthermore, the KSDD quantitative criterion is applied to the Meihuajing mining area No. 23, and the distribution characteristics of KSDD are analyzed. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for reducing disturbance and enhancing the stability of key strata during subsequent mining operations. Overall, this work contributes to the field of ground control in coal seam mining by providing a comprehensive approach to assess and mitigate the disturbance caused by mining activities on key strata.

Electrochemical behavior of an X-80 pipeline steel, including frequency-sweep electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS), time-sweep EIS at a constant frequency and open-circuit potential (OCP) monitor, was investigated using four-point bending specimens subjected to a stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) test in a near-neutral pH environment, The capacitive loop became smaller with test duration, revealing an increase in the corrosion rate, The resistance obtained in the constant-frequency EIS test showed two regions, of which the region with a remarkable decrease in resistance transformed into a region of slow decrease, whereas the capacitance increased with test time indicating that iron dissolution was fast at first, and then a corrosion product or film formed and covered the surface, leading to the pitting formation.

Este trabalho descreve o funcionamento do sistema automático desenvolvido para realizar o posicionamento de vagões durante a troca de rodeiros, que opera no Centro de Troca de Rodeiros – CTR, localizado nas instalações da empresa Vale em São Luís do Maranhão. O posicionamento de composições com até 110 vagões e com precisão de centímetros, resguardando a folgas entre vagões, é um desafio na rotina de manutenção. Para superar esse desafio foi desenvolvido um sistema automático para posicionar as composições de vagões, que utiliza medição baseada em tecnologia laser, com precisão de centímetros, e que atualiza continuamente a distância entre um rodeiro e o ponto correto de parada, possibilitando assim o posicionamento de rodeiros.

Pyro-reduction of ores to metal products developed markedly through the industrial revolution into the great depression. Nineteenth century resource and environmental sustainability were haphazardly improved by many process changes, although the motivation was primarily reduction in labor, feed stocks and fuel. Some notable achievements were coke and hot air for blast furnaces (later from waste heat stoves), puddling of wrought iron and steel ingot production with convertors advancing into oxygen use and continuous slab, billet and strip casting. Although advances in one sector were often counteracted by fall-backs in others, there was progress in that the resource consumption and pollution per unit of production was decreased. Improvements in the 2 decades following WW2 were mixed but popular notice of environmental hazards forced governments to legislate pollution controls and initiate steps in resource conservation. The energy crisis of the 1970’s saw an industrial energy-saving campaign and legislation of technology assessment procedures. Up until mid 18th Century, the training of iron masters depended on apprenticeship with some formalized knowledge from medieval books such as those of Biringuccio (1540) and Agricola (1556). The advances were very slow partly due to absence of scientific concepts of the smelting process. Nevertheless, some iron masters succeeded in improving the process and described procedures to instruct others. With the surge of steam power and the reverberatory puddling process for ductile wrought iron (WI), machinery changed from wood (iron strap reinforced) to WI machinery. With the clarification of the reduction and oxidation mechanisms by Cavendish and Lavoisier (~1780), productivity in iron production surged. The mechanical testing and microscopy of Kirkaldy (1862) spurred understanding of processing and properties of WI and steel. The various forms of C in steels were determined by chemists at the end of the 19th Century. It also became possible to control metal and slag chemistry in the open hearth furnace. But understanding of the transformations during heat treatment of steel only came in the first decades of the 20th Century.

Large quantities of ferromanganese sludge are generated as waste material by blast furnace during the manufacturing of ferromanganese. These slags are very rich in manganese, zinc and lead (5 to 40 %). These residues have been deposited in a pond in periphery of the steel industry. Considering the market value of the metals, these brownfield sites can now be considered as secondary resources. We have developed a hydrometallurgical process for selectively leaching Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce compounds of Mn and Zn pure enough to be economically recoverable and a residue rich in Pb. Batch laboratory experiments were carried out to determine appropriate leaching conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (90.0 %) with sulfuric acid and to generate a residue containing 15 to 30% of lead. This Pb residue is recyclable by another process.

The flotation performance of 2-(benzylthio)-acetohydroxamic acid (BTHA) to diaspore was first evaluated by micro-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated through adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that BTHA had a stronger ability to collect diaspore in comparison with another diaspore collector, benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), especially under the condition of weak alkalinity, the flotation recovery can reach 90%. The more negative interaction energy (ΔE) between BTHA and diaspore from molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that BTHA had an easier adsorption ablity onto diaspore than BHA, which matched with adsorption results. Asbestos is not the name of a distinct mineral species, but rather the commercial term applied to the fibrous form of several minerals differing widely in composition. There are some 30 known varieties of asbestos but of this number only 6 are of economic importance, and these, in order of economic significance are chrysotile, crocidolite (or blue asbestos), amosite, anthophyllite, actinolite and tremolite. Chrysotile asbestos was formed by the introduction of hydrothermal solutions into fractures in serpentinised ultrabasic host rocks. These solutions dissolved magnesium silicate from the wall rocks, and with subsequent lower temperature and pressure they became supersaturated, and crystals of chrysotile asbestos formed. The chemical composition is variable but is classified as a hydrous magnesium silicate, containing a high percentage of magnesia and water, plus varying amounts of alumina and ferrous and ferric iron. Other asbestos minerals are formed by a similar process but with a different host rock e.g. crocidolite occurs only in iron' formation. The chemical composition of asbestos minerals other than chrysotile, shows a wide variation, but in general may be classified as silicates, or metasilicates, containing varying amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron.
