A major breakthrough in extending the life of the wear material of high pressure roll crushers when treating moist, highly abrasive material has removed the last impediment to the widespread acceptance of high pressure comminution in the minerals industry. The system is very energy efficient. It has been demonstrated that in the cement industry energy savings of up to 50 per cent have been achieved compared to conventional hall milling. Besides being energy efficient, the process provides some remarkable and useful effects; ò better liberation of mineral constituents (as proven for diamond liberation). ò preferential comminution where induced micro fissures follow grain boundaries. ò higher reactivity of the product due to micro fissures. All these points will be described here together with a review of current flowsheet design and incentives for the use of this method of Comminution.

The Mesozoides of North-Eastern Asia represent a collage of exotic terranes which were accreted to the margins of the Siberian continent. In the Late Precambrian and Phanerozoic, the passive margin of the Siberian continent (the current north-east) broke up into a number of discrete fragments as a result of rifting events in the Riphean, Early and Middle Paleozoic. Rift related mineralisation includes stratiform and stratabound copper and base metal mineralisation in the structures of the Omulevka, Okhotsk and Prikolyma basement terranes, as well as along the edge of the Siberian continent in the Paleozoic sediments of the Verkhoyansk passive margin. During the Late Mesozoic the terranes were reassembled in a series of accretionary events. At the end of the Jurassic, the velocity of the Kula plate increased, and the opening of the Canadian Basin in the Arctic commenced, changing the vectors along which the Siberian and North American plates moved. Island arcs terranes were pushed back onto the Omolon super-terrane which was in turn pushed onto the Siberian Craton in a series of massive collisional events that resulted in the restructuring of the whole region. Numerous granitoids characterised by collisional and island arc chemistries with Au and accompanying Sn, and W mineralisation were emplaced. Mesothermal gold-quartz mineralisation was emplaced in a series of narrow belts that adjoin major crustal sutures and that spatially overlap belts of granitoids and zones of subgreenschist metamorphism. Each of these gold-quartz vein belts corresponds with a specific collisional phase. In the middle Cretaceous, the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt developed along the paleo-Pacific margin of the Siberian continent. Epithermal Au-Ag developed in the volcanics and shallow mesothermal Au-Ag-quartz and Au-Sb mineralisation developed in the Mesozoides. Porphyry and skarn style mineralisation developed in both the island arcs and in the continental Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanic Belt.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. RAPID colorimetric estimation of the amount of transparent minerals has been applied success- fully to instream mill products at the cryolite flotation plant of the Pennsylvania Salt Mfg. Co., Natrona, Pa. Apparatus used was a Bausch & Lomb monochromatic colorimeter. The optical assembly of the colorimeter, shown in Fig. 1, passes light from a 6-v, 32-cp, prefocus incandescent lamp through two condensing lenses, a heat-absorbing filter, an aperture-control diaphragm, an interference filter, and a sample container. The light finally strikes a barrier-layer photocell and the output current of the photocell is measured by a galvanometer. The engraved index line of the collective lens, located between the lamp and the galvanometer, is imaged upon the transmission scale of the colorimeter by the galvanometer mirror. Reflected light from the galvanometer mirror, the position of which is determined by the output current of the photocell, enables reading of percent transmission throughout the mineral sample being tested. The colorimeter, Fig. 1, was standardized as follows: 1-The colorimeter was connected to a Sola constant voltage transformer, A, of 6-v output operated from a 110-v ac supply. 2-Turning the toggle switch, C, illuminated the transmission scale, B, and the control knob, D, was adjusted with a blank in the optical system until the hairline on the scale read zero. 3-A No. 430 interference filter, E, was inserted into the filter channel, F. &--A test tube, G, containing 7 cc of distilled water was pressed into the sample space, H, and the fine adjustment knob,

"In 2013, as the prices of precious metals dropped, investors moved their positions to equity markets for higher returns. As a result, the price of gold dropped further to below US$1200 per ounce, prompting additional substantial outflows from gold investments. In response to lagging gold prices, major gold producers initiated large asset write-downs and cost-cutting programmes. In 2015, this trend continues and gold mining stocks are close to lows not seen since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008. In the current economic climate many projects have marginal economics, and the number of projects that have competitive development and production costs is declining. A competitive edge is particularly important with the decreasing grades of orebodies, increasing complexity of the mineralogy, and increasingly demanding environmental constraints. In addition, higher cost producers seek to optimize their process t o reduce operating costs.This paper presents some highlights of three case studies on optimization of gold leaching strategies that improved the economics of brownfield projects. Processing of sulphide-bearing ores was optimized by using the synergy between cyanide, lead nitrate, and oxygen. The outcomes were significant reduction of retention times while maintaining or increasing gold extraction and reducing cyanide addition and effluent treatment costs. A stirred tank reactor experimental programme led to direct implementation of reliable leaching strategies from laboratory scale to production. This approach resulted in savings of $2.2 million to $15.2 million on the three brownfield projects discussed in this paper."

Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine's accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.

"One of the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis is that inhaled silica dust activates a ""respiratory burst"" in pulmonary phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increase in oxidative metabolism results in enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species which if produced in excess, would overwhelm natural defense mechanisms and cause damage to the lung parenchyma. This damage would then result in scarring, fibrosis, and decreased gas exchange.Weiss and LoBuglio' have listed several oxygen species produced by phagocytes which may be involved in cellular injury. These oxidants include superoxide anion, hydrogen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Superoxide anion (0;) is generated from molecular oxygen by the plasma membrane bound enzyme NADPH oxidase according to the following reaction:Once generated, superoxide anion can form hydrogen peroxide:In the presence of myeloperoxidase and halide, hydrogen peroxide can form hypochlorous acid:Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide can also form highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals can be generated slowly by the Haber-Weiss reaction:In addition. hydroxyl radical production can be catalyzed via the Fenton reaction:Hydroxyl radicals can also be generated from the reaction of superoxide and hypochlorous acid as follows:Recent investigations suggest that, in addition to the reactive oxygen species discussed above, nitric oxide may be a potential mediator of silica-induced toxicity.2-4 Nitric oxide (NO') can be generated by the cytosolic enzyme nitric oxide synthase according to the following reaction:NO synthase exists in two forms. i.e.. a constitutive. Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent form and an inducible. Ca2+-calmodulin-independent form. In pulmonary phagocytes. the activity of the constitutive form of NO synthase is low. However. NO synthase can be induced in macrophages and neutrophils by a variety of stimulants such as lipopolysaccharide. interferon y. chemotactic peptide, platelet activating factor, or leukotriene B4.3.5Once generated. nitric oxide can combine with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite as follows:Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidizing agent. In addition, peroxynitrite can form peroxynitrous acid. which in turn can produce hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide (all of which exhibit strong oxidizing potential) by the following reactions:Oxygen metabolites have been shown to cause lung damage in vivo.6 Such damage includes edema. leakiness of the alveolar endothelial/epithelial barriers, and airway constriction.7 Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been associated with membrane damage and cell lysis.8 These oxidants have also been associated with alteration of cytoskeletal structures at cell-cell junctions and elevation of transepithelial conductance in cultured monolayers.9 Macrophages or neutrophils can be stimulated by bacteria or phorbol myristate acetate to produce sufficient oxidant levels to lyse lymphoma cells.10 This cell killing is inhibited by catalase but is unaffected by superoxide dismutase. hydroxyl radical scavengers. or azide. i.e., an inhibitor of peroxidase. This implicates hydrogen peroxide as the active oxidant. Similarly. Weiss et al.11 have reported that hydrogen peroxide is critical in the death of cultured endothelial cells due to neutrophil activation. In addition. hydroxyl radicals generated by monocytes have been associated with cell injury.12 Lastly. peroxynitrite has been shown to oxidize sulfhydryl groups and to inactivate proteinase inhibitor making the lung more susceptible to damage caused by phagocytotic enzymes.' Therefore. a strong case can be made that activated pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils are capable of causing oxidant injury. This chapter presents in vitro and in vivo data indicating that silica is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from these pulmonary phagocytes."

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

Thennodynamic geochemical models have been applied to assess the relative effectiveness of a variety of reagents added to aqueous waste streams for the removal of radioactive elements. Two aqueous waste streams were examined: effluent derived from the processing of uranium ore and irradiated uranium fuel rods. Simulations of the treatment train were performed to estimate the mass of reagents needed per kilogram of solution, identify pH regions corresponding to solubility minimums, and predict the identity and quantity of precipitated solids. Results generated by the simulations include figures that chart the chemical evolution of the waste stream as reagents are added and summary tables that list mass balances for all reagents and radioactive elements of concern. Model results were used to set initial reagent levels for the treatment trains, minimizing the number of bench-scale tests required to bring the treatment train up to full-scale operation. Additionally, presentation of modeling results at public meetings helps to establish good faith between the federal government, industry, concerned citizens, and media groups.

An X-ray emission spectrographic method of analysis is presented for determining rare-earth elements in fractions obtained from bastnaesite ore. The method includes determination of yttrium, thorium, lanthanum, and the rare-earth elements in various complex mixtures. The analysis technique is based upon comparing the samples with synthetic standards approximating the composition of the samples. Working curves are plotted on an absolute-intensity basis, with no correction for back-ground. Examples of working curves and the analyses of typical rare-earth concentrates are included. The selection of spectral lines for the various sample matrices is discussed. A special technique is used for samples in which rapid hydration and carbonation occurred. By analyzing synthetic samples of known composition, the accuracy of the method was determined. The average error of analysis was about 3 percent of the amount present in the range from 5 to 100 percent and about 7 percent in the 0.2-to 5-percent range. A maximum of about 40 samples per day may be analyzed for 7 elements each.

Although copper ranks very low in the order of abundance of elements in the crust of the earth, it has been one of the first metals utilized by mar, at his emergence from the Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago. Use of copper for weapons, tools, utensils and ornaments dates back to the twilight of history, 6,000-5,000 B.C. Native copper outcrops and the malleability of the metal explain its very early use by the cave-dwellers. The working, melting and extraction of copper from its minerals are among the oldest metallurgical achievements of the human race. The oldest complete smelting installations for the extraction of copper from its minerals, dated about the fourth millenium B.C., were recently discovered in the Timna Valley, Wadi Arabah, Israel. (1) The history of the developments of the extractive metallurgy of copper has been adequately reviewed recently. (2,3) The center of copper production migrated from the Eastern Mediterranean to Northern Europe (Mansfeld, Germany, Swansea, Wales) towards the end of the Middle Ages (1500 A.D.). The production of the metal was boosted tremendously in North America since the end of the nineteenth century (Fig. 1).

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. IRON ORE fields are situated in both the East and West of France (see maps). The eastern deposit is by far the most important from a tonnage point of view, not only in France, but in all Europe. The ores of this region are known as minette, and are situated in the Lorraine ore fields and the Briey plateau. The iron ores of the West are those of Normandy, Anjou and Brittany. Before the war, a large number of important German companies had acquired considerable interests in these western fields and a heavy trade with Westphalia had begun. Recently, however, conditions have changed and some of the mines of Brittany and Anjou are now idle. From a geological point of view, in Anjou and Brittany, a series of synclines extends from the northwest to the southeast, containing a number of seams of varying thickness and generally intercalated in Silurian and sometimes in Devonian formations. The ore is generally a hematite or a magnetite. The composition varies from 48 to 52 per cent of iron and from 8 to 12 per cent of silica. Con¬servative estimates indicate a con¬siderable tonnage of workable ores (150,000,000 metric tons).

This paper describes a mineral dressing process for the upgrading of tin ores. The process described is called 'agglomeration' and. is similar in many respects to flotation. Many variables have been examined experimentally both on batch and continuous operations and are reported upon herein... Using a Mt. Pleasant tin ore, assaying 0.5% Sn, an upgrading to 8% Sn, with a recovery of 95% could be obtained by this process.

"Laser assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is a new containerless fiber process whereby growth of small diameter fibers or microstructures (microsprings, microsolenoids) occurs directly from the vapor phase. The laser beam has a focal point adjusted to coincide with the tip of the growing fiber inside the reaction chamber. Since the growing fiber is not in contact with reactor walls or foreign materials, it is chemically pure, and suitable for optical uses and uses requiring high structural uniformity. Continuous fibers and multifilament yams are possible. The use -of high reaction chamber pressures (1-10 bar) and a small wavelength Nd-YAG laser made it possible to fabricate small diameter fibers at growth rates >1 mm/s. This paper describes the synthesis of single crystal, polycrystalline and amorphous fibers by LCVD, and provides a comprehensive analysis of phase transformations occurring during their fabrication.IntroductionLaser assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is a new containerless fiber process [1-10] whereby growth of small diameter fibers or microstructures occurs directly from the vapor phase. Para produzir os aços bifásicos galvanizados com revestimento de Zn-Fe as tecnologias de galvanização foram adaptadas visando à produção de aços com alta resistência, resistentes à corrosão e boa conformabilidade. Desta forma, e considerando as deformações obtidas na estampagem tornou importante a caracterização em laboratório da influência do nível e do caminho de deformação na geração de trincas do revestimento com Zn-Fe aplicado a um aço bifásico. O presente trabalho avaliou o efeito dos caminhos de Deformação Uniaxial, Deformação Plana e Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico na evolução das trincas do revestimento Zinco-Ferro (Galvannealed-GA) e sua conectividade considerando o aço base Dual Phase 600. Foi observado que aumento da área composta por trincas ocorre com o aumento do nível de deformação para todos os caminhos avaliados. O Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico foi o caminho de deformação que mais influenciou no aumento da área com trincas na superfície do revestimento e na conexão destas trincas com o aço base. Isso ocorreu em função do estado de tensão (tração-tração) imposta à superfície e à seção dos revestimentos. Mesmo sendo observada a conectividade das trincas com o aço base não foi verificado visualmente defeitos de desplacamento do revestimento tais como Powdering e Flaking.

"Mount Polley is an alkalic porphyry copper-gold deposit of Lower Jurassic age within the Quesnel terrane in south-central British Columbia. The silica-saturated Mount Polley intmsive complex is assumed to be coeval with volcanic rocks of similar composition in the Nicola Group in which it was emplaced. Other intmsions and some of the volcanic rocks in the Mount Polley area are silicaundersaturated and contain feldspathoids.The Mount Polley deposit is characterized by multiple intrusions that vary from diorite to crowded plagioclase porphyry to monzonite. Intmsion breccias are associated with some of the intmsive phases. Abundant hydrothermal breccias occur on the margins and above plagioclase porphyry intmsions. These breccias provide the main host for mineralization and are associated with the highest concentrations of copper and gold. The breccias are subdivided into four distinct types based on the dominant hydrothermal mineral in the matrix. Actinolite breccia is developed in an elongate zone within the core of the Central zone and grades laterally and vertically into biotite breccia to the southeast. Magnetite breccia is irregularly distributed and is relatively sparse throughout the deposit and albite breccia is dominant in the West zone. Pervasive and vein-related alteration correlates with the breccia types. The core of the hydrothermal system at Mount Polley is subdivided into three zones: actinolite, biotite and K-feldspar-albite. The margins of the core zone are overprinted by a discontinuous zone of calc-silicate minerals. This intermediate zone passes outward into propylitic alteration. Mineralization is most prominent within hydrothermal breccias and is generally present as disseminations, blebs within the matrix and abundant veins. Mineralization is associated with a chalcopyrite-magnetite-bornite assemblage in the core of the deposit passing out into magnetite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Relatively constant copper to gold ratios suggest that both metals were precipitated under similar conditions.Hydrothermal breccias are genetically related to the emplacement of the crowded plagioclase porphyry melt. Crystallization of the melt was probably accompanied by volatile/aqueous exsolution, forming a water saturated carapace. Decompression of the chamber in response to magma withdrawal, fracture propagation and possible fault movement allowed hydrothermal brecciation to occur at the apex and margins of the intmsion. Alteration and mineralization appears to have been controlled by fluids migrating away from the plagioclase porphyry."
