"A hybrid Deep Mixing (DM) shoring system was recently constructed for a high-rise development in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the temporary support of a five-level basement excavation. The site is bounded by an existing bridge off-ramp structure along its longest side and by city streets on the other two sides, which formed a truncated triangle in plan. A conventional secant pile wall was installed along the longest side, about 380 ft (116 m) in length, of the site. Hybrid shoring walls (HSW) 1 and 2 were installed along two shorter sides with each being 235 to 246 ft (72 to 75 m) long. HSW 3 completed the excavation support system along the shortest side with a length of about 55 ft (17 m). Cutter soil mixing (CSM) was proposed by the excavation and shoring design-build team in lieu of conventional secant piling. CSM was the preferred method to construct the infill panels between soldier piles because of the speed at which the shoring system could be constructed in the variable fill, peat, wood waste and overburden. Design ConsiderationsTo minimize the impact on buried utilities along the outside perimeter of the excavation, the temporary shoring was designed to limit the lateral displacements to less than 0.8 in (20 mm). Factors taken into consideration for shoring design included the lateral earth pressures from the fill and native soils, groundwater pressures, temporary construction loads (e.g., crane or heavy plant/equipment), and permanent structural requirements. The subsurface conditions at this site typically consisted of fill (cohesive and granular), overlying peat and/or wood waste, overlying clayey silt to sandy silt, overlying weathered to dense to very dense clayey silt till to sandy silt till with silt layers. Localized, perched groundwater was observed within the fill, peat, wood waste and sandy silt layers above the dense till."

At projecting mining-concentrating complex at the deposit ?Zapadnoye? (Russia) it was considered to enable an opportunity of refusal from conventional SAG-mills. First time a scheme of gold bearing ore destruction using Roller Press RP 5-100/90 had been developed and integrated. The plant was launched in summer 2003 and presently it has achieved designed technological parameters, processing throughput comes to 1 million tons of the ore per year.

"The morphology of pellet feed is known to influence several properties of iron ore pellets, including drop number, compression strength and reduction properties. The effect of grinding method on the particle size, specific surface area and particle shape of an iron ore concentrate has been studied. Grinding methods considered were ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). 5 different samples (Blaine= 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 and 2200 cm2g-1) were used to compare the size, shape and specific surface of particles for each grinding methods. Particle size was meticulously examined by sieve analysis, laser sizing and image analysis. In samples ground by ball mill, it has been observed that the fraction of particles <10µm increases from 39% to 46% as the Blaine number increases from 1800 to 2200 cm2g-1. For HPGR samples, corresponding figures are 41% and 49% respectively. It is evident that for samples ground by HPGR, the fraction of fine particles is higher than that of those ground in the ball mill. To measure the specific surface area of particles, Blaine and BET were used. A higher real surface area was observed from HPGR treatment in comparison to ball mill grinding, provided by a higher porosity, cracks, roughness and new surfaces. Shape factor of particles was determined using three descriptors: circularity, roughness, and aspect ratio. It was also observed that particles produced by HPGR were more elongated, less circular, and rougher than those processed by the ball mill. 1. INTRODUCTION Particle size and shape are important parameters that can significantly affect mineral processing plants and pelletizing plant performances (Brozek and Surowiak, 2007). It has also been proposed that green pellet quality is directly related to the amount of fine particles in a pelletizing plant (Dwarapudi et al., 2008; Umadevi et al., 2008; Gul et al, 2014; Van der Meer, 2015). Particle size distribution and specific surface area (SSA) are also key factors that can control the quality of green and fired pellets. Processing circuits generally reduce the fines fraction to lower than the required specific surface area (SSA). It is therefore necessary to regrind concentrates to produce suitable pellet feed for further treatment in the balling and firing steps [1, 2]. Two main methods are used for re-grinding of concentrate; high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and ball mill. Given the different forces used to reduce size in these methods, it is expected the shape of particles will be different (Pourghahramani and Forssberg, 2005)."

"Abstract - The Las Cañas stratabound Pb-Zn deposit, in northern Chile, is hosted by the Lower Cretaceous back-arc marine carbonate and subordinate andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Chañarcillo Group, one hundred meters above a thick pile of magmatic arc-related basaltic to andesitic lavas of the Bandurrias Formation. The deposit is not obviously related to local intrusive rocks, which include an Upper Cretaceous granodiorite batholith and dacite dikes emplaced along normal faults. Stratabound Pb-Zn-Ba mineralization is constrained within several porous stratigraphic units, including a 50 cm thick lapilli-tuff and less well mineralized algal-laminated limestone. Veins that locally carry some Pb-Zn occur along normal faults that displace the stratabound orebodies, and this study shows that they represent a different type of mineralization.Fluid inclusion microthermometric data for ore-stage quartz and barite indicate saline fluids (6 to 30 wt% NaCleq) and a formation temperature in the range of 80°C to 160°C for the stratabound mineralization. Two types of fluid inclusions occur in the veins. The type I vein fluid inclusions indicate less saline (average 7 wt% NaCleq) and slightly higher temperature fluids, in the range of 110°C to 220°C. The type II vein fluid inclusions indicate highly saline fluids (25 to 40 wt% NaCleq) which might be related to minor copper mineralization.206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios for galenas from the stratabound mineralization, with mean values of 18.42, 15.59, and 38.25, respectively, fall within the range of stratabound polymetallic deposits of northern and central Chile, and indicate a Lower Cretaceous magmatic rock source. Galenas from veins have slightly more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios, with mean values of 18.47, 15.61, and 38.34, suggesting two distinct episodes of mineralization.?34S values for galena and barite range from negative values (-31.2‰ to -12.5‰ and -7.7‰ to +12‰, respectively) in the mineralized tuff to higher values in the algal-laminated limestone (-2.5‰ to +1.2‰ and +13.2‰ to +17.4‰, respectively), close to Lower Cretaceous marine sulfate values for barite, and homogeneous values for the galena from veins (-12.0‰ ±1‰). Changing redox conditions can partly account for ?34S variations in the tuff. Sulfur sources include magmatic rock sulfur (-1.5‰ to +9.7‰) as well as sedimentary sulfides and marine sulfate."

The Bureau of Mines conducted an in-mine case study on two consecutive three-entry gate road systems designed in accordance with the stiff-yield pillar design concept. This Bureau study was conducted in order to further develop technology that will improve the health and safety aspects of longwall mining. Support loading and strata activity were monitored to determine the effects of retreat longwall mining on the gate road ground control system. Analyses of pillar stress and roof bolt loading histories revealed that headgate roof support elements ex-perienced cumulative loading throughout the life of the longwall panel. Tailgate pillar loadings had significantly different histories from the loading histories of the headgate pillars. Stress relief occurred in the tailgate pillars following the passage of the longwall face. More-over, the stiff-yield pillar design, with the abutment pillar placed adjacent to the working panel when part of the headgate system, provided effective ground control in that no major roof falls or roof problems were experienced in the headgate or tailgate systems during longwall mining.

El presente trabajo describe la geología de la mina Toquepala -en tanto genera información de modelos geológicos y numéricos para realizar un planeamiento corto largo plazo de calidad, especialmente en los bordes del cuerpo donde la ley se hace marginal, así también se facilita a la concentradora, las características geometalurgicas del mineral a ser tratado en corto y largo plazo, considerando el costo beneficio y planificación de sus recuperaciones. Finalmente, se muestra los controles geológicos para dar soporte a las operaciones minerometalúrgicas, tales como el mapeo, control de leyes, reconciliaciones, microscopia de opacos, y los reportes de control diario, mensual y anual.

As técnicas que visam aumentar a densidade de carga possibilitam elevar a produtividade da coqueria e, além disso, permitem utilizar carvões com menor poder coqueificante. O aumento de densidade pode contribuir ainda para a obtenção de um coque de melhor qualidade, o que contribui para a redução do coke rate no alto-forno. Uma alternativa para aumentar a densidade de carga é a adição de óleo na mistura de carvões, o que reduz a tensão superficial da água, permitindo uma maior aproximação entre as partículas e favorecendo o contato efetivo durante a fase plástica. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de óleo na densidade de carga para diferentes condições de granulometria e umidade do carvão empregado. Para isso foram realizados ensaios para medir a densidade de carga em três níveis de umidade (8%, 10% e 12%) e granulometria (82%, 85% e 88% < 2,83 mm). Posteriormente, foram realizados ensaios de coqueificação em escala piloto, e o coque produzido foi avaliado quanto ao DI15/150 (drum index), CRI (coke reactivity index) e CSR (coke strenght reaction). Os resultados mostraram que a adição gradativa de óleo promoveu aumento na densidade de carga enquanto a elevação da umidade do carvão e seu afinamento provocou a redução desse parâmetro. A qualidade metalúrgica do coque aumentou com a elevação da densidade de carga demostrando que essa é uma técnica com potencial de uso em plantas industriais.

The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014. En el presente trabajo abordamos dos de ellos para empresas globales, en el primer caso analizamos el Método de Múltiplos para empresas auríferas y cupríferas y el Método de Transacciones Comparables para auríferas y argentíferas.

This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. No modelamento matemático do reator RH, a penetração do gás no líquido na perna de subida é o fator chave para determinar a distribuição do gás injetado e obter uma previsão confiável da taxa de circulação do líquido entre a câmara de vácuo e a panela. Neste trabalho, através de simulações numéricas via CFX, investigou-se o efeito das forças de arrasto, de sustentação, de lubrificação da parede, dispersão turbulenta e de massa virtual. A distribuição do gás na perna de subida e os valores de taxa de circulação previstos via CFX foram validados com resultados de modelo físico. A melhor predição da penetração do gás e da taxa de circulação foi obtida na simulação com incorporação da força de massa virtual e da força de sustentação, cujos coeficientes foram iguais a 0,3 e 0,1, respectivamente. A força de lubrificação deve ser utilizada para evitar o acúmulo de gás próximo às paredes da perna, mas possui efeito desprezível sobre a taxa de circulação. Os resultados dos modelos físico e matemático se ajustaram com a equação de Kuwabara para taxa de circulação.

"Results from a small-scale laboratory experimental program show the changes in the vertical stiffness and strength of a soft clayey soil adjacent to the shaft of an inserted pile (i.e. expansion of a cylindrical cavity). The experimental program provides a realistic axi-symmetric physical model of an element of a cylindrical pile and the surrounding soil. The study interprets the improvement and assesses its magnitude in vertical stress-strain-strength properties of a normally consolidated soft cohesive soil in response to preloading impact in the radial direction. The results verify that insertion of a cylindrical pile causes densification of surrounding soil in a radial direction due to change in stress state around the pile, and thus consolidating and stiffening of the soil.The test results indicate that most improvement in modulus and strength takes place within a distance of 4 times the radius of a pile, though significant improvement is realized to a distance of 8-10 times the radius, beyond where there is negligible effect. Settlement characteristics of the surrounding soil in a zone of 12 times the pile radius improve significantly after the formation of a cylindrical cavity. The miniature vane shear strength tests show a 1.5 times increase in a zone of 4 times the pile radius compared to the strength at 10 pile radii. The results also imply that the spacing of cylindrical piles should not be more than 4 to 10 times pile radius, so that the surrounding soil matrix may improve the vertical bearing capacity under any foundation or embankment loading.INTRODUCTIONThe engineering community is familiar with different techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of weak cohesive and organic soils. Some of the in situ techniques to improve the properties of soft ground (e.g. soft clays) prior to placement of foundations are vertical preloading, deep cemenUlime mixing, stone columns, and grouting (Henn 1996; Moseley 1993). In addition to these methods, researchers have recently showed interest in achieving soft ground improvement by means of applying radial compression method for which different names exist including expanding pile (Kelleher et al. 2001 ), Preload™ Pier (Biringen and Edil 2003), and sand compaction pile (Lee et al. 2004). Handy (2001) has described how preloading can also be achieved by imposition of radial loading in soft ground with an expected improvement in stiffness. The idea behind the latter method is densification and consolidation of soft soil in the radial direction by controlled displacement for which the process can be viewed as a cavity expansion problem (Vesic 1972)."

For decades tile aluminium industry has been practicing gas treatment of aluminium melts. This treatment is of great importance because of its influence on &apos;impurity" and inclusion removal from the melt. The gas-melt interaction is greatly influenced by the gas composition, melt temperature etc. This paper gives an overview of the interaction between argon-chlorine gas mixtures and the aluminium melt. It covers the thermodynamics of the reaction between the chlorine and a number of different elements commonly found in liquid aluminium, and discusses the behaviour of reaction products in the melt. The paper reports an experimental study of the behaviour of the chlorine-molten aluminium interface, using sodium contaminated aluminium melt with and without the addition of grain refiner.

The gasification reactivity of PC (petroleum coke), strengthened by addition of different potassium carbonate proportions using different grinding medium, was investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results showed that the gasification reactivity of PC not only increased with the increase of catalyst-loaded, but also showed the effective improvement by anhydrous alcohol. The PC was mixed with potassium carbonate [K2CO3] catalyst at 0.5%, 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.5%, and then ground wet with distilled water. The CO2-gasification rate of PC was only 77.35%, 80.55%, 84.07% and 85.88% under the gasification temperature 1100 °C and holding time 120 min, at different K2CO3 respectively. However, when the PC was ground in anhydrous alcohol at the same condition of catalyst-loading, the gasification rate of PC reached 95.43%, 96.63%, 95.50% and 95.61% at the holding time of 108 min, 101 min, 74 min and 35 min, respectively. It was shown by FTIR, SEM and EDX determinations that the anhydrous alcohol used as the grinding medium can further improve the gasification reactivity of PC when compared with the distilled water.

Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicrometer size range and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicrometer size range. As dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using an impactor-type size selector such as the DPM impactor (DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) are an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device and, eventually, a reduction of its effective particle cut size, but when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions of this study, the effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal at the end of the study period. IntroductionSubmicrometer-sized particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, Gussman and Meyer, 2000; Ristovski et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicrometer particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittelson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Relative to other occupational groups, underground miners can have some of the highest DPM exposures due to their work in confined spaces where large diesel equipment is used (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as soot, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007; Birch, 2016)."

A quantitative damage evaluation caused by ground motions associated with strong roof caving is presented. The strong roofs are modeled as either cantilevering or bridging beams over continuous elastic foundations subject to an exponentially distributed vertical stress. Major factors influencing roof caveability and strain energy buildup are identified and investigated. A methodology to evaluate the strain energy accumulation caused by overhanging roof is presented. The potential for mine tremors is determined in terms of the local Richter magnitude ML which depends on the seismic energy transformed from the stored strain energy released when the roof fails. A particle velocity model is applied to estimate the damage area associated with roof collapse. A case study from a Utah coal mine shows that estimations of bump severity and damage area agree well with the field observations.
