In the flotation process the physical factors such as agitation intensity air flow rate and pulp solid concentration are very important parameters affecting grades and recoveries of the products. The flotation tests were performed on the samples of Bigadic colemanite ore to investigate these factors at different agitation intensities ranging from 1000 rpm to 1400 rpm and air flow rates from 1000 cm3 ? min-1 to 2000 cm3 ? min-1 with 2 L and 4 L cells using Denver laboratory flotation machine. The tested collectors were Cytec Aero 825, Aero 848N and their mixtures. Agitation intensity and air flow rises resulted in more floated material although sometimes being not selective. These effects can be attributed to powerful collisions between air bubbles and mineral particles. The first observation was the effect of pulp solid concentration on the floatability of minerals, while the flotation in 2 L cell (0.125 g.L-1 solid concentration) at 1000 rpm (0.176 wattcm-3), and with 1000 cm3.min-1 air flow rate was possible, the flotation in 4 L cell (0.0625 g.L-1 solid concentration at 1000 rpm. (0.176 wattcm-3) and with 1000 cm3 ? min-1 air flow rate was not possible. However at 4 L cell after increasing agitation intensity to 1200 rpm (0.201 wattcm-3) keeping 1000 cm3 ? min-1 air flow rate, flotation was possible again. This shows that these factors such as agitation intensity have some critical role on flotation. Another interesting observation was on the selective effect of pulp solid concentration. In the flotation with 1 L cell at different agitation intensities, collector Aero 848N was selective against calcite, while in the flotation with 2 L cell at different agitation intensities the same collector Aero 848N was selective against colemanite.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

O presente trabalho apresenta o projeto que propiciou melhores formas de controles internos possibilitando a redução do itinerário utilizado para o transporte de escória entre os Altos Fornos da Usina Presidente Vargas - UPV e a CSN Cimentos através da implantação de sistemas de controles de viagens por Validadores de Acesso, com a finalidade de viabilizar a utilização da melhor rota correspondente à menor distância entre as unidades operacionais e por consequência menor custo e impactos ambientais. A otimização do trajeto de escória possibilitou sinergia entre economia, meio ambiente e sociedade proporcionando ganhos financeiros e de produtividade. O projeto trouxe melhorias significativas, refletidas nos principais aspectos: Benefício financeiro com a redução dos custos contratuais com transporte interno de Escória; Inovação tecnológica que possibilitou controlar o registro de viagens por caminhão para melhor apuração da quantidade de viagens e maior confiabilidade dos desvios de estoques; Aumento da produtividade através da otimização do trajeto e aumento na performance de abastecimento da Cimentos; Redução mensal de 18 tCO2 eq. de gases do efeito estufa associado a economia média de 6600 litros do aspecto ambiental “consumo de recursos naturais” (Óleo diesel) com a otimização de 13.000 km.

Although secondary recovery of lead and lead-tin alloys has been common practice in the United States during recent years, there is little published in-formation concerning recovery techniques. Available information does not cover metal recovery from wet dross skimmings. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop techniques that would allow lead-tin alloys to be recovered from wet dross skimmings containing large amounts of zinc chloride. A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for recovering lead-tin alloys from wet solder dross skimmings. Straight water leaching, either with or without a second leaching operation carried out with a Na2C03 addition for removing chloride, produced a dross that could be smelted without further treatment. Overall recoveries averaging 92 percent of the metal values in the dross were obtained in the form of lead-tin alloys, which had an average tin content of 16 percent and lead content of 84 percent. The recovered alloy contained less than 0.02 percent zinc, as determined by both chemical and spectrographic analyses.

In this work an overview is given about the techniques available for the removal of metallic impurities from molten aluminium. The overview is focused on the removal of iron. Also, some experimental results are given about the creation of iron-rich intermetallic compounds in an aluminium system, which are subsequently removed by gravity segregation and filtration techniques. This work is part of an ongoing research project of three major European aluminium companies who are co-operating on the subject of recycling of aluminium packaging materials recovered from household waste by means of Eddy-Current techniques. Using this technique the pick-up of some contaminating metals, particularly iron, is almost unavoidable.

Experimental results have shown that fluxing with soda ash (Na:zC03) can remove As and Sb from molten copper at the rate of As>Sb, but is relatively ineffective in removing Hi. The rate of impurity removal is controlled by impurity mass transfer in the metal phase. In this paper, a mathematical model was developed to describe the impurity removal phenomena. The model incorporates the effects of molten bath mixing intensity, soda ash feeding rate, oxygen content in the molten copper and soda ash fluxing by surface addition and injection. The model predictions are in good agreement with experimental results and may be used in designing large scale tests.

Different methods of utilizing refractory bauxite and disposing red mud are practiced throughout the world, but none of them are known to be environmentally innocuous due to the complexity and /or high cost, and none has been found to be feasible on an industrial scale. Under these conditions, the use of bioleaching process seems promising. The present study emphasizes on the isolation of native extremophiles from the source Indian bauxite and red mud, with their detailed cellular and physio-chemical, and biochemical characterization. These organisms were tested for their ability to thrive in physically or geochemically extreme conditions. The gram positive capsule rich mesophiles and thermophiles were tested for removal of gangue minerals from the bauxite and red mud samples. The traditional method of deep sea manganese nodule exploration is to conduct grid survey and sampling on successively finer scales until a suitable deposit has been delineated. Clearly this is both time consuming and ultimately self-defeating if large areas of the ocean floor are to be explored on a human timescale. A conceptual deductive approach would be preferable if one could be found, as it would aim to outline areas of potentially economic nodules on the basis of easily measurable oceanographic parameters. An attempt to achieve this aim in the Central Pacific is outlined below. Nodule Distribution in the Central Pacific Ocean Maps of ore grade nodules in the Central Pacific show that they are confined to two zones trending roughly east-west which are well separated in the eastern Pacific but which tend to converge towards 170-180ºW. They follow the isolines of intermediate biological productivity in the surface waters, strongly suggestive of a biological control on their distribution. Within these zones the nodules preferentially occupy basin areas. Thus they are found in the Penrhyn Basin, Tokelau Basin, Central Pacific Basin, Clarion Clipperton Zone and Tiki Basin. Nodules in all these areas have features in common and are thought to have obtained their distinctive composition by similar processes.

La siguiente investigación pretende resolver el problema de los relaves almacenados en su mayoría, en la Cordillera central del Perú. Para resarcir dicha situación, el autor centra su análisis en la etapa de almacenamiento, donde se encontraron 400 toneladas de relave, con una dilución de 20% de sólidos. A esto se suma otros factores como la mala ubicación del depósito de relaves, densidad de canales, rebalses del canal conductor, arenas estancadas, etc. Frente a estas dificultades, se propone la construcción de canales de distribución en forma "v", reemplazando los canales rectangulares. Asi también se sugiere las canaletas de 8 de fondo y 9 de alto, con esquineras triangulares, la limpieza del extremo exterior de la quebrada destinada para el depósito, un mejor uso del sistema de desague del agua clara a usar a través del empleo de sifones de tubos de 3" 6 4" ?' con válvulas en el extremo inferior, el uso de caballetes, el cultivo de grass más común en la zona y la plantación de la yareta como base de alimento para el ganado y fortalecimiento de la zona terrícola.

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

Much progress has been made in the application of geostatistics to hard rock ore deposits.1,2,3 4,8 Progress in the application of geostatistics to coal deposits has developed over a period of time out of hard rock technology.5,7 Exploratory drilling in many hard rock deposits is frequently significantly more productive than exploratory drilling in coal deposits. For example, hundreds of feet of drilling and/or many drill setups are frequently necessary to obtain a few samples from a typical 4 to 6 foot thick coal seam. With hard rock deposits, which are frequently thick or volumetric, less drilling dead work is involved in sampling the deposit. To produce a variogram, which is the basic element needed for geostatistical analysis, a few well positioned holes drilled into a hard rock deposit where the core(s) can be divided into many sections can produce a detailed variogram. To produce a similar type variogram in coal, it is necessary to drill many dozens of holes with much of the core length consisting of overburden data which is frequently of only secondary importance. To apply geostatistics to coal, not only are many separate sample sites needed, but frequently a problem exists in that the interval distance between samples cannot be controlled with the ease that hard rock drilling intervals can be controlled where it is only necessary to cut core segments according to some preassigned interval of distance. Because the uses of existing coal deposit samples are frequently handicapped by irregular sample distances and lack of sampling density along certain directions needed for the development of variograms, the application of geostatistics to coal deposits frequently does not proceed with the same efficiency and rapidity as when these techniques are applied to ore deposits. Grid-fitting was developed by the writers, as a logical and evolutionary improvement over the long and successful application of geostatistics to coal seams.6,9 Grid-fitting combines the trending of variance as well as other aspects of probability theory to optimize informational yields from the commonly less productive data derived from coal exploratory programs. Grid-fitting is basically a technique where a hypothesis involving numerous grid patterns, where each pattern is of a given geometry, size and direction is repeatedly matched against actual sample data to determine which match results in the closest fit of the hypothesis to the data. To determine the closest fit, a special index known as a selectivity index was developed. The selectivity index is basically the product of the mean and variance of the variances contained within each of the grids. hence, if SI is the selectivity index then [SI = Xs E (S i - Xs) /N] where [X]s is the mean of individual grid variances Si2 for any pattern of given geometry, direction and size.

Froth flotation is a selective separation process and rarely used for beneficiation of limestone in the world as compared to other minerals and also mostly known conventional methods of up gradation of ROM including wobbling, selective mining, sorting, preblending etc. Limestone is mainly used in the manufacture of cement, steel and chemical industries. High grade limestone deposits are depleting day by day and the requirement of the industries have to be met by beneficiating the low grade limestone deposits in the world. And because of marginal quality of limestone, it cannot be directly used in cement industry. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the quality of low grade lime stone from 38-42 % CaO to 45-47 % CaO and silica reduced from 19-22 % to 11-13 % by use of oleic acid (commercial grade and vegetable origin) 0.38 kg/ton of limestone and caustic soda 0.05 kg/ton of limestone. A process, in which arsenic in the residue is transformed directly into scorodite and copper dissolves into the solution simultaneously, was studied. The process was carried out in acidic ferrous sulfate solution under oxygen pressure. The optimum conditions of the process were determined as follows: the initial H2SO4 concentration of 10 g/L; liquid/solid ratio of 10; Fe/As molar ratio in the feedstock of 1; the addition of calcium lignosulphonate was 1% of sludge; oxygen pressure, temperature and reaction time were 1.5 MPa, 150 °C and 6 h, respectively. Under these conditions, arsenic transformed to crystalline scorodite in size of 5–10 μm, and the transformation efficiency reached 97.60%; meanwhile, the copper was leached with a high efficiency of 93.34%. The stability of the leaching residue was evaluated by TCLP testing, and the results indicated the concentration of arsenic in the leaching solution was extremely low as 0.04 mg/L and met the standard of safe stockpile.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

In the present work, the effect of pH, non-ionic polyacrylamide flocculant and anionic polyphosphate on rheology and settling behaviour of colloidal TiO2 suspensions (15 ? 50 wt% solid) is investigated. Maximum particle aggregation, reflecting in the highest suspension settling rate and maximum shear yield stress was achieved at pH 7.2, the isoelectric point (iep), consistent with DLVO expectation. However, the maximum aggregation condition at the iep also resulted in the poorest suspension consolidation behaviour. Significantly enhanced consolidation was achieved for a more dispersed suspension at pH values away from the iep but at reduced settling rate. Thus, when pH alone is used to control conditions which facilitate strong interparticle attraction, a high settling behaviour which is not conducive to compact consolidation results. Improved suspension consolidation may be achieved at the iep via anionic polyphosphate addition which leads to attenuation of the strongly attractive van der Waals forces and emergence of "soft" repulsion due to weak inter-particle electro-steric forces. The weak repulsion act to lubricate particles involved in the hydrodynamic interactions which controls the compressibility of the sediment bed, allowing a compact consolidation of solids to be obtained. Alternatively, non-ionic polyacrylamide homo-polymer (Magnafloc 333) was fairly effective in flocculating titanium dioxide suspensions leading to high settling rate and acceptable pulp consolidation at the iep.

The Cerro Matoso S.A. mine and smelter, in the Cordoba lowlands of northwestern Colombia, consist of a dedicated laterite nickel mine, ore blending, drying and an RKEF process to produce high-quality ferronickel. At a project investment of $400M, first production of ferronickel was in September 1982, and in its inaugural year CMSA produced 6,150 tons of contained Ni from a mined ore grade of 3.2% Ni. Initial operational difficulties resulted in a number of furnace run-outs, which impacted ramp up to design ore throughput of 128 dry t/h Since then CMSA has steadily incorporated process improvements and initiatives to take the single line operation to an ore throughput of 175 dry t/h. A second 175 dry t/h line was added in 2001 (investment of US$ 300M) to consolidate CMSA as one of the world's lowest cost Ni producers with an installed annual production capacity of 50-55,000 tons Ni. "Information presented in this paper can be used to support deep soil mixing, subsurface grouting and slurry wall technology as sustainable construction technologies. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the default cementitious material used by Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) Members for geotechnical work. Owners, engineers and contractors can contribute to the sustainability of a geotechnical project by increasing the use blended hydraulic cements and industrial byproducts to replace some of the OPC in mix designs. Sustainability is defined as the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources. Production of cementitious materials consumes natural raw materials and energy while also generating air emissions and waste. Life Cycle Assessments can be used to compare the relative environmental impacts of one cementitious material to another. Blended hydraulic cements (BHCs) are interground (or blended) mixtures of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) with OPC. Commonly used SCMs include fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and limestone. Examples of industrial byproducts commonly used in geotechnical work include coal combustion residuals (CCR) (aka fly ash), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Much of life cycle impact of these SCMs and industrial byproducts have already been borne by the industries that generated them. There is increasing awareness to LCA and sustainability of different materials used on projects. This is evident in the application of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The savings in environmental impact with the use of SCMs and industrial byproducts can make proposed use of these materials in a geotechnical project more attractive in terms of sustainability. This paper presents (a) information that compares published life cycle assessment data of OPC, BHCs, and slag cement (SC) to illustrate the potential benefits to sustainability and (b) general strategies for positioning a geotechnical application, use, project design or cementitious material mix as a more sustainable alternative"

This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. The mine has, been idle since 1946
