Turkey has important celestite reserves in Sivas. These reserves have gypsum and/or calcite as gangue minerals. Celestite-calcite ore cannot be concentrated by gravity methods due to the low efficiency of gravity methods in fine sizes. Research was tried to concentrate celestite to a market grade by flotation. Parameters such as pH, particle size, dosage and types of collector and depressant were examined. Cyanamid A-845 and Na-oleate combination as collector, sodium silicate as depressant, and Aerofroth-65 as frother were found as the optimum flotation reagents. By applying 3-stage cleaning, a concentrate assaying 95,34 % SrS04 was obtained with 84,93 % recovery.

Location and History The Sherritt Gordon mine is in northern Manitoba, one hundred miles north of The Pas and forty miles northeast of Flin Flon. The original discovery was made by a Cree indian, Philip Sherlett, in 1922. The claims lapsed in 1924 to be re-staked and optioned by various mining groups who carried out a certain amount of development work before relinquishing their options. In 1927 the present Company, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property. Production commenced in 1931, but in the following year operations were suspended and it was not until 1937 that the prevailing price of copper pemitted resumption as an economic operation. The mine has operated continuously from that time to the present. Total production to the end of 1947 has been: Copper . . . . . . . . . 301,813 . .,345 pounds Zinc . . . . . . . . . . . 112,636 tons of concentrat (50% zinc) Gold . . . . . . . . . . 83,070 ounces Silver . . . . . . . . . 2,651,317 ounces General Geology The consolidated rocks in the vicinity of the mine, all of Precambrian age, are a series of gneisses and form a part of a great area of what are known as the Kisseynew gneisses. The Sherritt is the only known economic base-metal deposit to occur within the Kisseynew series. Extreme metamorphism has produced recrystallization that has imparted a decided igneous-like texture to many of the units. However, the gneisses are predominantly of sedimentary original although the most basic member, a hornblendegarnet gneiss, is considered to be an altered basic flow. Figure 1 illustrates the intricately folded structure and the succession of roe types. The footwall enclosing members are of sedimentary origin and represent quartzite and arkosic and greywacke derivatives. The contact footwall member is gneissic quartzite, a medium to coarse grained rock composed mainly of quartz with minor altered feldspar (orthoclase and plagioclase), muscovite, chloritized biotite, and magnetite. Most phases of this unit show varying degrees of granitization.

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

"A novel technology was developed to study the process of recycling copper from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), which are the main source of metal production in the next decades. The chemical compositions of the WPCBs were investigated. The results indicated that the PCB powder was mainly composed of copper (38.5 wt.%), iron, aluminum, and non-metallic materials. Copper is mainly in the form of Cu and is the most valuable metal for the recycle of WPCBs. The concentrated WPCBs powder, obtained by the mechanical process, were pressed as the anode, which was directly electrolyzed to produce copper. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, Cu2+ concentration, current density, pole pitch, and liquid-to-solid ratio on the voltage, current efficiency, and copper extraction were investigated. The results indicated that the optimum conditions were liquid-to-solid ratio of 30 mL/g, current density of 571 A/m2, sulfuric acid concentration of 180 g/L, 50 g/L of copper ion, polar distance of 3 cm. Under the conditions, a desired current efficiency could be achieved. Meanwhile, about 95.62% Cu was recovered from the WPCBs. The experimental studies also revealed that the purity of copper obtained at the highest current efficiency was higher to 99.98%. Produced copper sheet were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis indicated that the copper was the main phase. INTRODUCTION With the rapid development of electronic industry, more and more waste electronic and electrical equipments (WEEE) are generated every year (Fogarasi et al., 2012; Liang et al., 2013). The production of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is the base of electronic industry, because it is the essential part of all electrical and electronic equipments (Schlummer et al., 2007). As a result, a considerable amount of waste PCBs containing plenty of heavy metals have to be treated. In general, PCBs contain about 28% metals that are abundant non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Pb, and Sn. Printed circuit boards can be considered as a secondary resource for recycling rather than wasting. The contents of gold and silver respectively reach 80 g/t and 3300 g/t, which are much higher than that of primary ores. Copper is the main metal of PCB and its content is as high as 26.8% ( Zhang et al., 2009)."

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. Using primarily quantitative single crystal X-ray techniques studies have been made of the precipitation of the metastable w phase in alloys of titanium with Mo, Mn, Fe, Cr, and Nb. It is shown that, in agreement with earlier work on the Ti-V system, the composition of the w phase during aging approaches a constant; the value varies from one system to another in a systematic manner with the electron concentmtion. Results relevant to the mechanism of w precipitation during quenching and during aging are presented and discussed. Results are presented to confirm that the w phase is coherent and the nzorphology of the Necipitates is described and discussed. PRECIPITATION of the metastable w phase in alloys of titanium is of interest because of its severe embrittling effect and also because of the enhancement of the superconducting properties which accompanies precipitation.1 The general features of w phase precipitation have been discussed by cuillan and by Bagaratskii et d3 The work described in this paper forms part of a general study of w phase precipitation which was undertaken to elucidate various unknown or controversial features of the process, namely: i) What is the mechanism of formation of the phase ii) How does its composition, morphology, volume fraction, and particle size vary with the type and content of the alloying element and with the heat treatment conditions? iii) What is the relation between the w phase and the equilibrium a phase? In a previous paper4 the results of a detailed study of w phase in Ti-V alloys were presented. It was shown that: U During aging the composition of the w phase approached a saturation value of 13.5 to 14.0 at. pct V. ii) w precipitated as cube shaped particles and once precipitation was complete, particle coarsening did not occur. iii) a phase formed initially by direct conversion of w-phase precipitates. In this paper similar measurements are reported on Ti-Mo alloys and some more limited data given on the Ti-Cr, Ti-Fe, Ti-Mn, and Ti-Nb systems. The results i.1 the six systems are then compared. It has been shown previously by electron microscopy that the w precipitates as ellipsoids in both the Ti-Nb system,&apos; and in i-o.&apos; Blackburn and williamsz3 have reported the precipitates in Ti-Fe, Ti-Cr, and Ti-Mn are cubic, i.e., similar to the Ti-V system.476 EXPERIMENTAL METHODS 1) Specimen Preparation. Samples of the compositions shown in Table I were prepared by arc melting. High purity electron beam zone refined titanium (Materials Research Corporation Grade I—total impurity content =250 ppm) was used; the other source materials are given in the table. A commercial Ti-8 wt pct Mn alloy was used for studies of this system. After homogenization the materials were rolled or cut into strip approximately 1/4 in. by 2 in.; the strip was then heated at temperatures of 1200" to 1300°C for several hours by passage of a direct current through the strip in an ultra high vacuum system (<10-torr) and then quenched by admitting high purity helium and switching off the current. This treatment resulted in crystals up to 2 in. by 2 in. by A in., almost all of which had a [100] direction nearly perpendicular to the plane of the strip. The crystals were cut from the strip by spark machining and their composition checked by lattice parameter measurements supported by chemical analysis. 2) X-Ray Diffraction Methods. Lattice parameter measurements were made using a modification of the single crystal spectrometer described by ond. In this technique the crystal angles for reflection on either side of a highly collimated primary beam are measured. Generally the 400 CuK, or the 400 CuKp reflections of the bcc lattice were used. In the as-quenched crystals a precision of 1 in 105 was obtained, but due to line broadening the parameters in aged materials could only be measured to 1 in lo4. This accuracy was, however, quite adequate for the purposes of these experiments and enabled the composition of the p phase to be obtained to 10.1 pct in all systems except Ti-Nb where the lattice parameter change with composition is very small. Column flotation cells have been installed in numerous base metal operations around the world. The majority of these cells utilise conventional air-only spargers to introduce air into the bottom of the column. The recent development of instruments to measure the bubble characteristics in these columns has provided a renewed understanding of column behaviour. These new tools provided insight into why the columns at Red Dog Mine had never performed up to expectations. After efforts to optimise the spargers failed to substantially change the bubble size and air efficiency, alternate sparger systems were investigated. The Metso Minerals CISA Microcel sparger system appeared promising and was selected for a full-scale plant trial. The Microcel sparger system was originally developed for the coal industry at the Virginia Centre for Coal and Minerals Processing. In October 2003, a Microcel was retrofitted into one of two 3.66 m diameter flotation columns in the zinc retreat circuit at Red Dog Mine. The operation of the two different sparger systems in parallel allowed a detailed comparison. This paper discusses the performance of the Microcel based on the data collected during several detailed surveys. Bubble size measurements carried out in the pulp zone using the McGill University bubble viewer showed a significant difference in bubble size. The mean Sauter diameter of the bubbles decreased from 3.4 mm for the jetting-type sparger to 1.9 mm for the Microcel sparger. The overall recovery and the recovery by size fraction for both valuable and gangue minerals were compared. Paired t-tests demonstrated that the Microcel column produced a higher concentrate grade (0.6 per cent zinc absolute) and a higher unit recovery (2.8 per cent zinc absolute) than the existing Canadian Process Technologies Inc (CPT) SlamJet column. These improvements provided a payback period of 1.5 months for the $109 000 investment.

Activities of "FeO" in "FeO"-MgO solid solutions have been determined in the temperature interval 1100" to 1300"C by equilibrating oxide samples with pure metallic iron in atmospheres of known oxygen partial pressures. The end members "FeO" and MgO form a complete solid solution series. The system shoztls a considerable positive deviation from Raoult&apos;s law. A large amount of data has been accumulated during the past 50 years on stability relations existing among various crystalline and liquid phases in oxide systems of importance in metallurgical processes. By comparison, very little is known about the thermodynamic properties within the various homogeneous phases present in the systems, particularly the crystalline phases. The present paper deals with determination of activities as a function of composition in solid solutions of wüstite ("FeO") and periclase (MgO). Such solid solutions ("Magnesiowustites") have simple sodium chloride structure and are known to be continuous between the end members at elevated temperatures (> 1000°C) and strongly reducing conditions such as prevail in contact with metallic iron. Wiistite has a defect structure in which the ratio of oxygen to iron varies and never has as low a value as 1:1 corresponding to the simplified formula FeO. Within the range of stability of this phase, the composition changes between a maximum oxygen content of approximately 25.6 wt pct (corresponding to the formula FeO.83O) and a minimum oxygen content of approximately 23.2 wt pct (corresponding to the formula Fe0-96O). The activity data to be reported in the present paper are based on using as standard state the wüstite which is in equilibrium with metallic iron at a particular temperature, i.e., "FeO" of minimum oxygen content at each temperature. For sake of simplicity, the formula FeO will be used to represent the wustite phase in the remainder of this paper. Consider the reaction 2 FeO solid solution = 2 Femeta1 + Ozgas in which FeO dissolved in another oxide dissociates to metal and gas. The activity of FeO in the solid solution, relative to "pure FeO" in equilibrium with metallic iron as a standard state, is then expressed as Here Po, and po2 * are the partial pressures of oxygen of the gas phase in equilibrium with metallic iron and the oxide solid solution or "pure FeO", respectively. The equation holds only if the metal phase is essentially pure Fe. The oxide combinations used in the present investigation fulfill this requirement. Magnesia is so much more stable than FeO that for all practical purposes aFe = 1 in the metal phase present in all mixtures used in this investigation. I. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1. General Procedure. The experimental method used was analogous to that developed by Foster and Welch1 and used recently by Hahn and Muan.2 It consisted of four steps: a) Determination of the equilibrium between FeO and Fe. b) Determination of d-spacing change with composition in oxide solid solutions (FeO-WO). c) Equilibration of various members of the solid solution series with a metal phase and a gas phase of known oxygen partial pressure. d) Determination of compositions of solid solutions resulting from step (c) by means of data obtained in step (b). 2. Starting Materials. General Aniline and Film Corp. carbonyl iron powder, type HP, was used as the source of metallic iron. A representative analysis was as follows: Fe, 99.6 pct; C, 0.01 to 0.04 pct; 0, 0.1 to 0.3 pct; N, 0.00 to 0.05 pct. Other elements were present as traces only. Wiistite was prepared from "Baker Analyzed" Reagent grade Fe2O3 of reported analysis as follows: Assay (Fe2O3), 98.8 pct; insoluble in HC1, 0.02 pct; not precipitated by NH,OH, 0.02 pct; Zn, 0.003 pct. "Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35 percent), ceramics and glass (32 percent), lubricating greases (9 percent), air treatment (5 percent), continuous casting mould flux powders (5 percent), polymer production (4 percent), primary aluminum production (1 percent) and other uses (9 percent) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014).In the 1990s, the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced during this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminum industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, NV and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, NC. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period, it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994).Lithium is still produced from the brine operations at Silver Peak. But in more recent years, Chile has become the world’s leading producer of lithium carbonate from brines. Australia has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer of lithium mineral concentrate, the majority of which is exported to China to produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide (Jaskula, 2014).A spodumene concentrate was also produced at the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada beginning in the 1980s through to 2010 when lithium operations were suspended due to fluctuations in the lithium market price (Martins et al., 2013)."

"A novel carbonaceous immobilizing agent for heavy metal contaminated soil was prepared from rice straw using sulfur immersion and pyrolysis, and the lead immobilization in artificial contaminated soils using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous material was estimated. The rice straws were cut to 1 cm pieces, and then immersed in 0.1 - 1 M K2S solution for 0 - 24 h to prepare sulfur-immersed materials. The immersed-materials were heated at 400 oC for 1 h in nitrogen gas to produce the sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous material by pyrolysis. The abilities of the product to immobilize lead from aqueous solution were examined to obtain the product with high lead immobilization ability. With increasing K2S concentration, the immobilization ability of the product for lead gradually increases and then above 0.5 M K2S those are almost constant, while 15 min is sufficient for the immersed time to obtain the product with high lead immobilization ability. The product prepared from material immersed in more than 0.5 M K2S solution for less than 15 min has a maximum immobilization ability for lead ion. The lead immobilization using the sulfur-impregnated product is sustainable due to the formation of leadhillite [Pb4SO4(CO3)2(OH)2] and anglesite [PbSO4]. The product can immobilize lead ion in various artificial lead contaminated soils. By mixing artificial lead contaminated soil with the sulfur-impregnated product, the eluted solution became neutral, and the eluted concentrations of lead ion dropped below the Japanese elution standard for soil.INTRODUCTION Soil contamination with heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Accumulation of heavy metals in soils affect soil ecology, agricultural productivity, quality of agricultural products, water resources, and serious health problems for human and animal (Raicevic, et al., 2005). In the United States, for example, approximately 63 % of the sites on the National Priority List (NPL) for the treatment of contaminated soils are contaminated by metals, and lead is the most common metal, found at 15 % of the sites. In Japan, according to a report by the Ministry of Environment, 43 % of the contaminated sites that exceed the environmental quality standards are contaminated by lead compounds. Soil contamination by lead compounds is also prevalent in other developed and developing countries where lead compounds are used extensively in industrial activities without careful contamination management. Lead is a ubiquitous heavy metal pollutant in soils due to their use widely. The primary sources of Pb contamination include industrial activities such as mining, smelting of metals, and the use of Pb-containing products such as paints, lead-acid batteries, bullets, gasoline and pesticides (Cao, et al., 2009). It can damage human nervous (especially children) and reproductive systems (ATSDR, 2007). The high concentration of Pb in the soil poses risks to human and animal health by the leaching of metals from the soil into water and the consumption of edible plants growth in the contaminated soil. Therefore, proper remediation is necessary to reduce metal availability in soil for protecting human health."

ACIP pile construction procedures will vary depending on soil, rock, and groundwater conditions. This manual represents a wide range of possible applications in a variety of projects. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

"This paper reports on a CANMET-funded examination of less conventional underground coal mining methods. These methods are documented and those that show the most promise for application to western Canadian conditions are discussed in detail.IntroductionIn recent years, mining considerations and economics have encouraged a transition from underground mining to surface mining. However, a change in market conditions or the development of superior underground mining methods may reverse this trend . Should this happen, the industry must be quick to respond and have information available on the latest developments of underground mining technology. In time, deposits of high-quality coal, which are easily accessible to surface mining, will be depleted and a change to underground mining methods will require consideration. The economic transition point between surface to underground will be a major determinant in maintaining a competitive edge. For these reasons, it is important to keep abreast of improvements in underground mining methods. To meet this objective, CANMET awarded a research contract to Monenco Consultants Limited, to investigate unconventional underground mining methods that show a potential for western Canadaoi. This paper presents the results of this investigation."

The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in&apos;the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige&apos;s Relationship (&apos;the volume-variance relationship&apos;) for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

The object of this paper is to give an insight into various metallurgical operations involved in the making and shaping of steel for shipbuilding at the Newcastle plants of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Commonwealth Steel Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla plant of Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. The Rönnsktär smelter has recently undergone a series of technical and operational changes. This changes are caused by our own will to remain and gain in competivety and to adapt to the ever changing surroundings. To be able to remain competitive in surrounding with high wage costs, high inflation and high environmental standards thorough cost management is needed. The Swedish economic policy in the beginning of the 80&apos;ies consisted amongst other things of two devaluations. The exchange rate of the Swedish Krona was reduced with approximatively 25 %. This boosted the profits of our export industry, some even believed we entered the land of milk and honey ... And working in this promised land where everything turns into profit it is very difficult to be careful and restrictive with your spendings. Apart from some healthy and fruitful investments we allowed ourselves yearly steady increases in salary for ever reduced number of worked hours and we of course employed more people. Inflation rates went up and so did property prices. In 1986 finally reality catched up on us. Reality in the form of too high costs started to hit Swedish export industry 5-6 years after the big devaluations. Furthermore the high inflation rate also hit the domestic industry a couple of years later. Together with other important factors Sweden faced a severe home-made recession in the beginning of the 90&apos;ies. With this background we now report and analyse our smelter&apos;s performance and operating results, shown in fig 1 The main constrictions on smelting and refining at Rönnsktär are today: * Income restrictions by governmental production level Limit * Throughput resmctions by governmental emission limit * High capital costs in the aftermath of Swedish high inflation in the recent decade * Low work force turnover Below we will illustrate how we tackled with these issues along the following lines: * People * Quality * Technology

The question of whether the air curtain principle could be used under conditions prevailing in Canadian metal mines was investigated. A vertical, portable BERRY air curtain was tested, at first in a wind tunnel built at Ecole Polytechnique at full scale (8-by 8-ft cross section) to simulate a drift and its lateral connections, and then in the haulage ways of a metal mine under actual conditions. The results permit us to predict under what conditions this type of air curtain is capable of acting as an air stopping or flow regulator and how it could be further developed.

O pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE) é um importante subproduto da indústria siderúrgica devido ao seu alto teor de Zn. Assim, tecnologias vêm sendo desenvolvidas visando seu aproveitamento, sendo o forno Waelz a mais difundida delas atualmente. Sua operação, por contar com um forno rotativo de grandes dimensões, que abriga uma infinidade de fenômenos físico-químicos, apresenta difícil previsibilidade ab initio. Por essa razão, este trabalho faz uso de uma ferramenta avançada da termodinâmica computacional, destinada à modelagem de processos, chamada SimuSage, a fim de modelar o seu comportamento. Para a criação do modelo utilizou-se também uma base de dados termodinâmicos advinda do software FactSage e a plataforma Lazarus. Com base em dados e resultados operacionais da literatura, foi possível realizar simulações no modo adiabático e comparar os resultados com os da prática industrial. Constatou-se uma grande sensibilidade do modelo com relação à quantidade de ar de entrada considerada no sistema, mas, também, boa aproximação dos resultados com relação à composição química dos produtos Óxido Waelz e Escória Waelz.
