INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines are used in regular flat ore beds having uniform thickness. Since coal is the most common type of material occurring in such beds, most continuous miners are used for the extraction of coal from underground mines. The first continuous mining machine for under¬ground coal mining was introduced in 1948. In one machine, the continuous miner combines the functions performed by a conventional face drill, a cutting ma¬chine, and a loading machine. It breaks or digs the material out of the surrounding solid and transfers the material back through the machine chassis by means of a chain conveyor. The conveyor carries the material to a haulage system, usually a rubber-tired vehicle known as a shuttle car. Generally, continuous miners are used in seam heights from 890 to 3660 mm (35 to 144 in.). For seam heights of 1070 mm (42 in.) or less, the haulage system may be a multiple-bridge conveyor or battery-powered tractors that haul low-bed trailers. Proj¬ects are being undertaken by private industry and through government contracts to develop a continuous haulage system for all seam heights. As of 1976, the majority of continuous miners were of two types. The first type is the drum miner, which mounts the cutting elements on a series of drums across the cutting head of the machine, sometimes using a cutting chain to cut clearance for the gear drive. In the drum-type machines, the cutting head rotates parallel to the material face. The second type is the auger miner, which utilizes cutting elements mounted on two auger-type cutting heads. One head is located on each side of the machine, with the heads mounted per¬pendicular to the material face. Chain-head ripper-type miners/miners having rotary cutting elements with oscillating motion and twin-head boring-type miners have all been popular within the last 15 years. Although these are considered obsolete, some machines are still being supplied for specialized applications. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This chapter describes only continuous mining ma¬chines available as manufacturers' production models as of September 1976. Figs. 1 through 11 illustrate some typical machines currently in use. Cutting Elements The cutting elements are the interface between the machine and the material being mined. In describing the cutting elements, consideration must be given to the differences between the drum- and auger-type machines, the bit-tip speeds, and the bit types. Drum-Type Continuous Mining Machines: Three of the four principal manufacturers of drum-type miners use multi-motor designs that provide separate a-c motors for driving the cutting elements. Gear trains are used to reduce the speeds of the motors to the rotational speeds of the cutting elements. One of the three suppliers drives the cutting elements of its low-seam models with a heavy-duty drive chain that is equipped with cutting bits; all other functions of this machine have separate motor drives that are either electrical or hydraulic. The fourth principal manufacturer generally provides two a-c electric motors, utilizing gear reducers, drive shafts, and hydraulically operated engaging clutches to power all of the operating functions, including the cut¬ting elements. Some drum-type miners use trim chains, equipped with cutting bits, to cut clearance for the gear drives. These trim chains vary from two 305-mm (12-in.) chains to one 760-mm (30-in.) chain per machine, de¬pending upon the manufacturer's design concept. In all machines other than the low-seam models that use chains to drive the heads, the trim chains are driven by sprockets on the drive shaft of the final cutterhead drum; therefore, the trim chains are not used for power trans¬mission to the cutting elements. In addition to cutting clearance for the gear drives, the trim chains provide uniform bit spacing all the way across the head and assist in moving the cut material to an area where it is either loaded directly into the miner's conveyor or is easier to load into the conveyor. On a drum-type mining machine, the cutting ele¬ments all rotate from the top to the bottom. Therefore, the recommended procedure is to raise the cutterhead to the maximum seam height, sump the entire machine forward to maximum depth by means of a crawler drive, and then shear downward until the cutter elements reach the floor level. The maximum sump depth varies ac¬cording to the drum diameter, the type of material, the floor conditions, and the operator's abilities. It normally varies an average of 460 to 760 mm (18 to 30 in.). Cutter drums are supplied with two types of cutting bit holders. Weld-on holders are attached permanently. Pin-on holders are replaceable at the face. Cutter-drum diameters over the bit tips vary from 660 to 965 mm (26 to 38 in.), depending upon the chassis height of the machine and the range of cutting heights. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a test procedure to compare the initiating strength of detonators by using adjustable-sensitivity liquid explosives. Various tests of detonator strength are currently used by the industry, but many of them do not quantify the ability of detonators to initiate detonation reactions in an explosive charge. The USBM used mixtures of nitromethane and ethylene diamine, the sensitivity being "fine-tuned" by 2-nitropropane. Military standard J-2, commercial No.6, and commercial No.8 detonators were evaluated using three test configurations: (1) axially immersed in the test explosive, (2) tip just touching surface of the explosive, and (3) immersed transversely in the explosive. Markedly different results were obtained for these three configurations, indicating that the directional effects are important. This explains why different detonator strength tests do not correlate well with each other. Some tests, such as the sand bomb and underwater, measure the total energy out-put, while other tests, such as the plate dent, test measure the energy in the axial direction. The USBM's test data indicate the importance of conducting the experimentation in the manner in which the detonator is actually intended to function.

This report summarizes research into the root causes of failures in mine power systems which impact safety and reliability. Abnormally low fault currents, due to arcing faults, self-excited systems, and fallen trolley wires are examined and quantified. The reliability of components which are critical for safety is studied, as well as reliability of components which are crucial to the mining pro cess. Failure rates are found through in-situ tests, accelerated life tests, studies of mine maintenance, and fault-tree analysis. Reliability data is used to predict fatalities and lost-time accidents through computer-aided fault-tree analysis. Analytical support tasks reported include the deriving of trailing-cable ampacities under cyclic loading, and the measurement of connected ground beds.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of "lost" air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.

The Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) working group is a group of industry professionals formed under the joint initiative undertaken by United States Society of Dams (USSD), Tailings Dam Safety Committee and Canadian Dam Associations (CDA) Mining Dam Safety Committee (MDC). The working group was organized to develop a guideline on implementation of a RIDM process relating to the design of mining water dams and Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF). Since its formation in 2022, the group has completed a literature review of more than one hundred (100) cross industry publications on applications of RIDM in mining water dams and TSFs, has held two industry workshops in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 2024 and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2025 to capture industry input relating to the understanding and application of RIDM. The working group has subsequently formulated a process that constitutes good industry practice as it relates to application of RIDM in mining dams and TSFs. The authors, through their engagement and leadership in the working group and facilitating the two industry workshops in 2024 and 2025, are of the opinion that the successful application process of RIDM across Canada and United States (U.S.) is still not clear to many industry practitioners. There is confusion over terminology, good versus poor RIDM, and in some cases reluctance to use the RIDM terminology. This paper addresses critical knowledge gaps identified in the RIDM implementation for mining water dams and TSFs through three years of stakeholder engagement. It provides clarity of the process via a joint position statement and implementation roadmap, resolves terminology confusion, and documents contradicting industry opinions to promote adoption of good RIDM practices in Canada, U.S. and beyond.

Frequently ore reserve studies utilize samples from a series of drilling or other types of sampling campaigns. Sometimes there is a mix of sample types, say for instance, channel samples from underground workings and drill core from surface drilling. Since drilling, sampling, logging, and sample preparation protocols tend to change over time, there is always a question whether the samples give similar results that vary only by chance alone. The problem of comparing the various campaigns is complicated by the presence of spatial relationships among the samples. Geostatistical tests take the spatial correlation into account, but these tests may be complicated and cumbersome to implement. A comparison method based on familiar statistical graphics is presented which accounts for the spatial relationships. It allows comparisons to be made quickly by using simple statistical graphs such as scatterplots and boxplots.

ENGINEERS from industrialized countries are frequently called upon to examine mining operations in primitive areas and make recommendations regarding mechanization and modernization. They often set forth with self-confidence, knowing full well that all that is needed is their experience and several shiploads of mining machinery, and at times they mentally provide the answers before the problems have been clearly stated. In primitive areas it is absolutely essential that the examining engineer spend enough time at the site to acquire a thorough understanding of what is being done now and why it is done the way it is. The objective here is to state in simple terms some of the problems that may be encountered, in- as much as solutions, if they can be found at all, will differ with each experience.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs in high sulfur coal and heavy metal mining environments. We show remediation methods using 3D numerical ground water flow models and chemical kinetics of pyrite oxidation for acid leaching of pyrite during air and ground water flow. A recently developed numerical model couples air and water flow with kinetics of iron-reactive bacteria, oxygen transport, specific chemical reaction rates, and pyrite oxidation to calculate migration control of pollution. A model is presented which considers diminution of acid mine drainage in pyrite rich ore bodies by raising the potentiometric surface through a vadose zone to reduce acid mine drainage. A ground water model is presented of an initially saturated mountain, containing an adit, with a sloping ground water table. Ground water recharge consists of snowfall and normal precipitation. Simulations indicate that the historically open adit creates a desaturated mountain above the adit. Significant air saturation ranging from 10-90% oxygen can occur to depths of the adit (-270 m). Remediation consists of plugging the adit, which fill s adit and mountain with water from recharge. Plugging the adit required <10 years for resaturation and rise of the water table in the mountain.

Although motor gasoline marketed in the United States in January of this year was, on the average, slightly more volatile than that sold in January 1925, the improvement in quality is too small to be of importance. In other words, there is no evidence that any radical change in the quality of gasoline is being made at the present time. During the past six years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the thirteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a research and development project sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe containment for disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is currently being developed 2150 feet below the surface, in a thick salt bed which will serve as the disposal medium. Provision of a proper ventilation system at the WIPP Project is a major priority of those responsible for its design, management, and operations. As an ongoing effort towards this goal, it was decided to simulate the mine&apos;s ventilation system using Dravo&apos;s MINEVENT computer program. Specifically, the work included the development of the following simulation models: 1. Simulation of the current ventilation system 2. Simulation of the designed ventilation system for the following modes: o Mine Construction mode/shift o Waste storage mode/shift o Fire or exhaust filtration mode These computer models are useful in solving complex ventilation problems likely to be encountered in an R&D project, like WIPP. They are particularly helpful for the development of contingency plans to incorporate during emergency situations, such as fires, fan stop- pages, radiation leaks, etc. Also, they can be utilized when considering expanding certain underground areas to ensure the availability of adequate ventilation.

Several relationships between coexisting phases for analytical binary solutions near the critical point are given. These relationships were developed from a consideration of a (G u, P) surface at constant temperature and a (G u, T) surface at constant pressure, where G is the molal Gibbs free energy, u is the concentration of component 1 expressed as a mole fraction, G is the pressure, and T is the temperature. These formulas should facilitate the calculation of some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data about the critical point.

R. W. Campbell (Jones and Laughlin Steel Carp., Pittsburgh)—As usual John Price has presented an excellent paper. I know of no one who has devoted more time and conscientious thought to this subject than he has, and his efforts have produced scientific data and conclusions of real value. Results of similar studies made by the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. on the blending of Pennsylvania coals may be of interest. During 1935 the late F. W. Wagner and the present writer developed an empirical physical fuel value formula for evaluating the combined physical tests of metallurgical coke, see Table IV. In the development of the formula, the tumbler test, shatter test, screen test, and porosity of coke have been taken into consideration. Each of these tests brings out some physical property not expressed by the others, and in estimation of the importance of these tests as a medium for evaluating coke for the blast furnace, their worth has been graded as follows: It was thought that some additional penalty should be applied to cokes that do not show a uniform screen size, assuming that coke larger than 4 in. was not desirable and that this size was an indication of irregular size. Therefore the screen test factor is further corrected by applying a penalty of 1 pct for each 1 pct material greater than 4-in. size as shown by the screen test. The physical fitness of coke for blast furnace use depends upon four fundamental characteristics: l—gen-era1 strength, as indicated by the shatter test; 2— abradability, or the resistance of cell walls to reduction in size by attrition, as indicated by the tumbler test; 3—porosity; and 4—size and uniformity. Each of these characteristics is not of equal importance, but surely, in an attempt to determine an accurate physical value, the individual value of each should be taken into consideration. The formula is used as a yardstick, so to speak, in determining variations in the normal production of metallurgical coke and in making comparisons between normal coke and experimental blends with other coals. Table IV gives results of coking tests on raw and washed high volatile coals and these same coals with blends of coke breeze, anthracite coal, char and low volatile coals, all from Pennsylvania. The table also gives the source of the coals and coke breeze, as well as their proximate analyses. It will be noted that the washing of the raw high volatile coal increased the physical fuel value from 26.17 to 39.16, showing the effect of removing shale and slate which produces a detrimental fracturing and weakening of the coke. It is a well known fact that many Pennsylvania high volatile coals contain an excess of resinous material or binder which has a tendency to weaken the coke, owing to its high evolution of gases during carbonization. Tests were therefore made with coke breeze, an inert material, in an attempt to alleviate this condition. Blends of washed coal with 5 pct and 7.5 pct coke breeze collected from the coke plant quenching sump (82.9 pct through 1/8-in. screen) resulted in cokes with a physical fuel value of 20.75 and 16.73 respectively, lower than results obtained from 100 pct raw high volatile coal. It will be noted that the percentage of + 4-in. coke increased but that the tumbler test was very low. Undoubtedly better results could have been obtained if the coke breeze could have been crushed extremely fine. During World War II the government asked the coking industry to consider the use of anthracite coal as a substitute for high quality low volatile coal, which was extremely scarce at the time. The next series of tests was made with blends of raw and washed high volatile coals and 5, 10, and 15 pct Pennsylvania No. 5 buckwheat anthracite (100 pct through l/8-in. screen). It was necessary to use some raw high volatile coal in these blends because of insufficient washer capacity at the time. It will be noted that the physical fuel values

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI&apos;s Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

The study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of a full-scale continuous centrifugal concentrator in the reconcentration of fine hematite from high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) concentrate in a tailings recovery plant, and to investigate the usefulness of the technology in industrial applications. The effect of changing the operating variables on concentrate grade and recovery was studied. The results indicate that among the variables considered in the study (water spray pressure, centrifugal acceleration, feed volume flow rate, feed percent solids and the reciprocation and spacing of water sprays), the change in centrifugal acceleration affects the recovery the most and continuous concentration can be achieved only when the water spray has a sufficient pressure. In addition, the reciprocation and spacing of the water sprays have a significant influence on the concentrate grade. Although performance of the full-scale concentrator is slightly inferior to pilot-scale trials, due to limitations in the scale-up design and the fluctuations of feed material characteristics, this concentrator provides a potential way to achieve continuous concentration and obtain a high-grade concentrate from tailings.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the hazards of coal mining, increased production, and protection of the environment. One area of research that has received scant attention in recent years is that of water inflows, probably because few fatalities in the United States have been attributed to them. As mining goes deeper, the problem of water in 1ow could increase dramatically because of adjacent or overlying mines in which huge water pools are impounded. Inaccurate mine maps and ineffective barriers can constitute a serious problem for operators both from gradual inflows and sudden inrushes of water. This report describes a wide but ineffective barrier that permitted an average 240-gpm inflow to a developing mine from an adjacent mine. The anomalous geologic structure that facilitated this leakage is described, demonstrating that size, alone, is no assurance against serious leakage. Some recommendations for managing serious water inflow are included.

. Electronic wastes are heterogeneous mixture, with mainly copper, aluminium and steel attached to or mixed with various types of plastics and ceramics. In general, small amounts of precious metals are incorporated in this mixture. Today, these components constitute an environmentally problematic fraction in disposal. Their physico-chemical characteristics have been investigated through chemical, x-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis.
