During the last three years the use of ethylene glycol dinitrate4 (E.G.D.) as at low-freeze (L.F.) agent in place of nitropolyglycerin has become common in the manufacture of explosives of the dynamite type. The usual proportion of D. G. D. in the explosive "oil" is 25 per cent; the remainder, 75 per cant, is regular nitroglycerin. These proportions were probably selected as a continuation of the practice of 25 per cent nitropolyglycerin and 75 per cent regular nitroglycerin.

In underground coal mining many excavated openings have a relatively short projected life span. To ensure safety for men and materials at a minimum cost over the projected operating life, only pillars for overburden support and roof bolts for support of the openings are used extensively. Mining activity constantly changes the geometry of the mine producing load changes on the structural support members of the openings that often induce unstable deformations which can lead to roof falls or pillar failures. The paper describes how simple deformation measurements can be used to design primary and supplementary roof supports and to predict roof falls and possibly pillar bumps. Specifically, bed separations in the roof measured directly with the help of borescopes and calculated from differential convergence data are used to optimize bolt links or support requirements for chemical stabilization of mine roofs. Roof falls are predicted on the basis of admissible values for cumulative convergence between roof and floor, convergence rate, and the change of the rate of convergence. The pillar extraction operations convergence anomalies detected from contouring identify bump prone pillars, while convergence and pillar dilation determine the yield zone in a pillar to verify pillar softening and de-stressing. The Glacier View RARE Ii further planning area contains no identified mineral deposits, other than stone, which cannot compete favorably with similar deposits closer to major markets. Pierce County mining claim records show six coal claims were located in the study area between 190b and 1907; however, no coal was found at the described locations. Two coal prospects, the H.O. Lamming and Floyd Rice, are within 0.5 mi (0.8 km) of the area's west boundary (fig. 1). At these prospects, impure bituminous coal beds strike approximately north and dip east toward the study area. Analyses of samples 1/ indicated an average heating value of 2,767 BTU 2/ per pound (6,436 joules per kg). Because of the low heat value, this coal is subeconomic. Intense folding and faulting which disrupted the beds would limit the use of conventional coal mining equipment, making future economic development even less likely. Trinity Resources of Houston, Texas has leased approximately 1,404 acres (568 ha) inside the study area and an additional 1,020 acres (413 ha) adjacent to the study area for oil and gas exploration. However, no oil or gas wells are known to have been drilled in or around the study area.

A survey of the interactions of large gas bubbles formed from top and bottom injection of gases into melts was carried out. Spherical cap bubbles were found not to produce much splash when they break through the bath free surface except for that formed by plunging of the-spout at its edges. In contrast, the bursting of balloons produces cavities which give rise to liquid jets being ejected from the bath free surface. The position of the balloons relative to the bath free surface is an important parameter in the formation of the liquid jet. It is found that the interactions of multiple bubbles close to the free surface is important in determining the splash behaviour of gas injected systems.

A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.

Argamassas feitas com cimento são comumente usadas para revestimentos de paredes, pisos e tetos. Para proteção radiológica, estas argamassas são acrescidas de pó de bário, elemento atenuante contra radiações ionizantes. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal comparar argamassas usuais utilizadas como revestimento de paredes com a argamassa baritada, cuja finalidade é proteção radiológica em ambientes sujeitos a radiação ionizante. Com base no objetivo proposto, estabeleceu-se a metodologia do trabalho constituída das seguintes etapas: caracterização dos materiais constituintes das argamassas por meio dos ensaios de análise química por fluorescência de raios-X, análise granulométrica, determinação das densidades experimental pelo método de pesagem e medição volumétrica manual dos corpos de prova, moldagem dos corpos de prova das argamassas normais e argamassa baritada (material comumente utilizado para proteção radiológica), avaliação das propriedades mecânicas e avaliação da atenuação da radiação X utilizando o programa Xcom. Por meio deste programa, foram simulados os coeficientes de atenuação em massa das composições, gerando curvas de atenuação, no intervalo de energia estimado a cada 0,01 keV. Em função destas curvas de atenuação em massa, verificou-se o desempenho das argamassas comparando-as com outros materiais desenvolvidos e com materiais de referência (chumbo).

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

"One of the key drivers of geometallurgy is to define the ore characteristics and their variability to build a geometallurgical model. The inclusion of waste rock properties and their variability is just as important, given that the generation of acid rock drainage (ARD) poses one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Formed through the oxidation of sulfide minerals in the presence of oxygen and water, ARD generation is exacerbated through the regeneration of lixiviates by naturally occurring iron- and sulfur-oxidising micro-organisms. In order to manage the potential risk of ARD pollution, timely, accurate, reliable and robust characterisation and prediction of the ARD potential of waste material is critical from an early stage in the mining process.This study demonstrates the use of the biokinetic-accelerated weathering test developed at the University of Cape Town to characterise the ARD potentials of gold waste rock samples under microbial conditions. These tests are performed in conjunction with standard characterisation tests to provide an indication of the potential for ARD generation under both chemical and biological conditions. Results provided information regarding the relative rates of acid neutralisation and acid generation, with the contribution of specific minerals to the observed behaviour considered through use of a detailed mineralogical assessment. Chemical methods have been tried to alter the clay or the system water so as to obtain pellets with desired properties. Those methods include ion exchange and the use of supplemental binders (organic and inorganic).

"Fine manganese fines are characterized by large amount and low price compared to lump manganese ores. However, fine manganese must be agglomerated as EAF (electric arc furnace) feed. In this paper, high quality fired pellets were produced by simulating grate-kiln process to supply the feed for EAF from some imported manganese ore fines containing high combined water. Manganese ore fines assaying 44.47wt%Mn, 5.89wt%Fe, 12.09%LOI and with 72.7wt% ranging between 0.5mm and 8mm, are pretreated up to the particle size of 84.7wt% passing 0.074mm by HPGR (high press grinding roller) twice in open circuit. The finely ground manganese fines were mixed with 1.2wt% bentonite, balled at 15% moisture for 7min in disc pelletizer. The drop numbers, compressive strength and thermal shock temperature of green balls reach 11 times/0.5m, 11 N/pellet and 360oC, respectively. After the green balls drying in the oven, the dry pellets were preheated at 1050oC for 12 min and then fired at 1300oC for 12 min in electric tube furnace. The compressive strength of fired pellets reaches 2621 N/pellet. Therefore, these pellets are high quality burden for blast furnace or EAF due to high mechanical strength and high Mn grade of 49.11wt% and low detrimental elements.IntroductionManganese, mainly using as deoxidizing agent, desulfurization agent and alloying elements, is widely used in the steel company. With the rapid development of iron and steel industry in China, domestic manganese ores cannot meet the requirement, resulting large quantities manganese ores import to China [1-4]. Compared to lump manganese ores, fine manganese ores containing high combined water are characterized by large amount and low price. However, they must be agglomerated as EAF (electric arc furnace) feed. There are three ways to agglomerate the manganese fine ores, sintering, briquetting and pelletizing [5-6]. Compared to the other two methods, pelletizing technology possesses the following superiorities, such as uniform size distribution of product, stabilizing chemical composition of product and lower energy consumption in producing. Therefore, pelletizing is a superior way to treat the fine manganese ores [7]. The systematic research of producing manganese oxide pellets by fine manganese ores containing high combined water was studied in this paper."

Within the next, year or two, Western Canada should overtake Mexico and France. to become the worlds second largest producer of elemental sulphur, surpassed only by the United States, By 1965, it should produce about 25% of the world's total elemental production and, about 10% of sulphur produced in all forms. In 1952 Alberta had but one small sulphur recovery plant. By 1962, it had fifteen plants with a total designed capacity of almost 6,000 long tons of sulphur per day and actual production of almost one million long tons per year. This decade of dynamic growth was the result of Alberta's rapidly developing natural gas industry. More particularly it was the result of approval in 1960 to export natural gas in large volumes into the United States. Prior approval to export gas from Alberta to eastern Canada and relatively modest volumes to the U. S. had resulted in the construction of several plants but none were of the scale required to serve the U. S. market.

Our earthly treasures are being quickly depleted. We have experienced what can happen in an energy crisis. You have read and heard all kinds of stories as to what caused this crisis. On the surface it would seem that all of a sudden a situation becomes a crisis whether it be fuel, potatoes, beef or whatever. Well, of course, they don't just happen. There is always a little fore-warning here, an indicator there. Someone recognizes a sign of potential trouble but is ridiculed when he forecasts it. We are running out of sand: Producers of aggregates who can say today ... "That couldn't happen to me", can well be awakened tomorrow to the cold fact of reality. It could come from any number of directions. Depletion is mostly foreseeable but zoning isn't. Legislation can also be sudden death to availibility. With the ever growing population moving into the rural countryside, available deposits are being sold either to developers or being zoned for restricted use. The fact that a gravel pit or quarry is located on a particular plot has not fazed some of the local planning boards when they decided to place the adjoining property in a residential Zone A. Proponents of zoning preach that such use is necessary to insure that the land will be put to its best use. Planning boards establish the best places for schools, homes, shopping areas, factories, etc., so that the individuals or groups are in harmony with each other. This is usually done to date without thought or consideration to the geological importance or potential of the area. Today over half of the United States is living under some form of land use restriction. Little consideration has been given to what lies under the ground to be zoned. Fortunately, the states are slowly getting around to geological surveying. I feel that it is about time that state and federal authorities institute governmental restrictions to prohibit or control local zoning ordinances which would deplete or deny an area of its natural resources. While I could continue for the balance of my time just on this facet of our industry's problems, my point is: How sure are you of your next load of sand? I could be well laughed at by some of you for saying that there is an alarmingly rapid disappearance of "nearby" sand and gravel reserves in many areas of the country. A questionable statement, except to those producers where depletion has already taken place.

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

Injection leaching can improve leach ore recovery by displacing retained solutions, enhancing ore wetting, and creating new flow paths for efficient solution collection. This paper presents a method to assess the feasibility of injection leaching in finer-grained, potentially contractive ores (from a geotechnical slope stability perspective) using limit-equilibrium (LE) slope stability analysis and static deformation modeling. LE models were carried out by assigning peak undrained strengths to the heap leach ore material, and modeling the excess pore pressure induced during the injection leaching process using spatial function in Slope/W. Static deformation modeling was completed using the software Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) to evaluate the potential for deformations due to the excess pore pressures induced during the injection leaching process. A constitutive model was used to represent the geomechanical behavior of the leached ore material, which enables the prediction of deformation and potential stability issues resulting from excess pore-pressure induced during injection leaching process. The two-pronged approach provides a practical method to assess geotechnical impacts and guide data-driven decisions in injection leaching operations.

The interaction between various slags and a nickel concentrate containing pyrite, pentlandite, and violarite were investigated by submerging concentrate pellets in molten slags. The slags were contained in MgO-A12O3 spinel crucibles. The slag oxidizes the iron sulfides in the concentrate, resulting in a nickel matte. The amount of S02 gas formed during reaction was measured to determine the oxidation reactivity of the slags. The experimental variables included temperature, the ferric/ferrous ratio of slag, and other slag properties such as the FeO/SiO2 ratio and the MgO and NiO contents. The reactivity of the slag depended in a complex manner on its oxidizing power, viscosity, and interfacial tension. The slag composition for the greatest reactivity was determined to be Fe3+/Fe2+ = 0.3, Fe/SiO2 = 1.3, and % MgO = 2. This slag, however, caused substantial foaming. Increasing the MgO content to 10% or replacing it by 5% MgO + 8% NiO eliminated at a slight decrease in reactivity. The implications of the findings from this work in the bath smelting of nickel sulfide concentrates are discussed.

Nickel laterites constitute a significant proportion of the worldÆs Ni reserves and are considered environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional sulfide resources. Subsequently they are of increasing significance for exploration and production. To be successfully exploited, however, they require an understanding of the relations between mineralogy, texture, grade and recovery. The development of automated quantitative mineralogy can aid in the characterisation of the ores to help improve extraction and processing methods. Recent developments in hydrometallurgy have resulted in relatively straightforward recovery of Ni in silicate (saprolite and smectite) ores. However, the extraction of Ni from limonitic ores is more complex. It requires a detailed understanding of the iron-hydroxide species and other, potentially interfering, oxide and hydroxide compounds. Particularly the relations between the Ni-bearing goethite and Mn, Al and Cr may adversely affect the economic prospects of an ore. Manganese can adversely affect the selective recovery of Ni and Co from solutions but has also been highlighted as a significant potential by-product (cf, Zhang and Cheng, 2007). Aluminium hydroxides can be significant acid consumers leading to an increased expense of extraction (Johnson, Cashmore and Hockridge, 2005). Chromite is resistant to acid attack, but chromium in goethite may adversely affect the dissolution leading to a retention of Ni (McDonald and Whittington, 2008). This study presents an investigation of oxide and hydroxide species in laterites using QEMSCAN« EDS/SEM-based automated quantitative mineralogy. Samples were collected from Turkey (¦aldag), Albania and the Philippines. Particular emphasis has been placed on the development of a quantification for Ni-poor and Ni-rich goethite.

E. OROWAN*—I observed the phenomenon of jerky yielding many years ago with zinc25 and cadmium single crystals. A significant point was that the jerks occurred not only when the stress was raised but also (sometimes, after a pause of many minutes during which no trace of creep was observable) at constant stress. The phenomenon may be closely linked with the inertia of the testing machine and of the specimen, although the inertia alone cannot account for it. If, during the test, the resistance of the material to plastic deformation suddenly diminishes while the applied force remains constant, a sudden deformation follows until the yield stress has risen, by strain hardening, to the level of the applied stress (= the value of the previous "upper yield point."). When this is reached, the rate of deformation has attained a maximum value because, up to this moment, the applied force was higher than the plastic resistance of the specimen, and the difference was used for accelerating the moving parts of machine and specimen. The kinetic energy accumulated is now transformed into plastic work by further deformation; that is. the deformation overshoots the point at which the plastic resistance equals the applied static force. When the kinetic energy has been used up, therefore, we are left with a specimen the yield stress of which is higher than the applied stress, and no further deformation can occur (apart from a little creep) until either the applied stress has been raised to the new yield stress level, or the yield stress has fallen by thermal recovery to the level of the applied stress. While this occurs, a new upper yield point can develop, for example, by precipitation.26

"The search for technological innovations in the Civil Construction takes as an objective the reduction of costs and increase of the productivity. However, these technologies demand analysis and studies of parameters of control that provide the quality of the products. With the intention of improve the knowledge on industrialized mortars used in mechanized projection machines, a characterization was done in the state anidro, fresh and hardening of three mortars, being each one of a State, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia. The tenors of water/ mortar was obtained through tests done in built environment, it varied from 0,17 to 0,26. From these results, the mortars were projected by his respective consistency, analyzing its compressive strength, and traction adherence resistance, in this way, the good performance of the revetments was provided.IntroductionThe market competitiveness of Construction has led companies to invest in construction processes and techniques in order to rationalize and optimize the buildings. The sums given in the accompanying table are those actually paid for material and labor up to about August, 1875; but, as some parts of the machinery were not wholly completed at the starting of the works in September, 1875, the statement cannot be taken as an absolutely correct note of the total cost. A complete description, with engravings of the building and machinery, was given in Engineering, April 26th, 1878, in a paper by Messrs. A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, to which convenient reference may be made. A detailed list of the construction accounts has been given in a paper, by the present writer, in vol. vi, Transactions of the Institute. A summary is given in the table of the items in each class which enter into the total cost, and also a note of the proportion which each of these items forms of the whole. A concise view may thus he obtained of the facts embodied in the statement as a whole, even though it cannot lay claim to completeness in showing the entire or final cost. An urgent suggestion has reached the writer from a distant country that such statements of cost to be really most serviceable should give the details in days of labor, in weight of iron, and in number of brick, and to this an assent is most cordially yielded. It is true, however, that the mere labor of copying arid compiling these details to such a degree of minuteness, would be very great, and, in any event, the probable difference between the plans of an existing establishment and one projected, would be so wide as to render even so complete a statement of cost of little more real service than the approximate notes given herewith.
