Two very successful schools on 'The design and operation of plants for the recovery of gold by activated carbon', were held from 14th to 18th October, 1985, and from 24th to 27th February, 1986, at Mintek. They were arranged by the Institute in close co-operation with Mr. Peter Bailey of Gencor, who was course leader. Computers and mathematics APCOM 87, the 20th International Symposium of the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries, is to be held in Johannesburg from 19th to 23rd October, 1987. Interested people are invited to submit titles and synopses in any of the following topics or others. Papers can cover theoretical developments, practical applications, case studies, and software and hardware systems. Tunneling '88 The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy is pleased to announce the holding of 'Tunneling '88', the fifth international symposium and exhibition in the series, from 17th to 22nd April, 1988, at the Kensington Rainbow Exhibition Centre, London, England. Centenary exhibition and conference The major trade show to take place in the year of Johannesburg's centenary will be the 7th International Mining and Electrical Engineering Exhibition- ELECTRA MINING 86. The Exhibition, which is also the third-largest mining exhibition in the world, wil take place from 15th to 19th September, 1986, at the National Exhibition Centre, Crown Mines, Johannesburg. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1964; in general; the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 describes a short-term investigation into safety problems associated with shipping of molten sulfur; this investigation is not at present destined for publication elsewhere.

Post-super-cycle mining executives must exploit every aspect of the value chain to deliver continued value to stakeholders. Integrating enterprise-wide information technology with value-chain-wide operational technology, known as IT-OT integration, is essential to extracting optimal results from the value chain. Mining companies trail other industries with respect to IT-OT integration across the value chain. Manual data consolidation and value chain optimization using spreadsheets and human intelligence are widespread practices within the industry. Increasing automation with smart devices and controllers means the volume and velocity of data will soon increase beyond human abilities. Enterprise Architecture provides a method for aligning information technology with the business operating model to successfully implement IT-OT integration. A Value Realization Framework (VRF) provides a means for predictable traceable value realization from IT investments and assets. With these principles, frameworks, models, methods, and techniques, mining organizations can accomplish IT-OT integration that provides their executives with a strategic value-chain-aligned platform for sustained value realization over the long term.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. It is well known that underground miners are exposed to one of the most dangerous working environments on earth. As mine delve deeper, the geological factor, mine position and climate condition as well as heat generation from mining machine give rise to the mine operating temperature. This, in turn, has an adverse effect on the environment and thus leads to higher operating costs. Careful estimation and design of air flow rate, spray system, cooling load and additional ventilation auxiliary equipment are of importance to ensure safety, comfort and productivity whilst maintaining low operating cost. A computational fluid dynamics simulation approach is employed to examine underground mine ventilation in a 36 m cul-de-sac of tunnel of coal mine. The model predictions in the turbulent range were validated by comparison with published data. Different turbulence models were tested to select one that yields adequate accuracy and is computationally efficient. Effects of the following parameters are evaluated: tunnel geometry, air flow rate and inlet air temperature. The objective of the simulation is to arrive at an optimal strategy for ventilation and thermal comfort at low cost.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcroppings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined. Late in 1959, following a slightly improved position in the tungsten market, company management decided that, by changing the mining method, the operation could be economically feasible. The major premise in this decision was that a reduction of from 25 to 30% of the mining costs could be achieved by the conversion of the mining method from square-sets to horizontal cut and fill. Reopening of the mine began in February 1960, Full production has now been reached and overall mine productivity has been doubled.

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. Existing GE customers have benefited from increased visibility of network operations, higher velocity, less dwell times, and improved on-time performance across their networks."

This study focuses on the environmental characterization and assessment of long-term neutral mine drainage (CND) potential from waste rock piles at the abandoned Erdouz mine in Morocco. The study involved metallographic analysis, static tests, and column tests. Results indicate that the waste rock is not an acid mine drainage generator but produces CND, mainly with sulfates exceeding Moroccan standards. The waste rock is relatively stable and could be reused after pretreatment.

A gold and silver open-pit mine located in northwestern Chile contracted ACZ in 1991-92 to assess the stability of their spent ore pile and to determine the cause and magnitude of cyanide contamination associated with leaching operations. The mine is a conventional open-pit located at an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters (m.) (15,744 feet). A spent ore pile is located approximately 2,000 m. southwest of the mine and approximately 1,000 m. northeast of the active pad and plant facilities. The pile was constructed on a gentle northwest slope dipping 12 to 13 degrees. The pile is bordered by a small river to the northwest and by a larger river to the northeast. Both rivers eventually flow into Bolivia. Heap leaching and processing commenced at the mine in 1988. Since 1988, nearly 6.0 million tons of ore at an average grade of 1.96 grams/ton (0.07 ounces/ton) of gold and 52 grams/ton (1.83 ounces/ton) of silver have been treated by cyanide heap leach methods with zinc (Merrill Crowe) precipitation. In approximately three years of operation, the mine has yielded more than 225,000 ounces of gold and over 1.5 million ounces of silver. Currently ore is agglomerated and hauled to the leach pad by truck and is top loaded to produce a 5-meter lift height. Four contiguous reusable (on/off) leaching pads were constructed with an asphalt layer above a carefully compacted sub-base of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner and screened fines. Leach solution of pH 10-11 containing 1.2 to 1.5 gram/liter of cyanide is applied to the heap at a rate of 10 liter/hour/square meter for a total active application period of 30 days. Leached (spent) ore is transferred to the spent ore pile located approximately 1,000 meters to the northeast. The pile currently contains approximately 6 million tons of spent ore. The pile liner, which has been constructed over a prepared sub-grade consists of three geosynthetic layers (geotextile/flexible membrane liner/geotextile). Long term objectives include washing the pile to recover an additional 3 to 4 percent gold and silver.

A gold sampling optimization study was carried out in support of open pit gold mining operations for the Newmont Gold Company Bootstrap-Capstone deposits in Northeastern Nevada. Six bulk samples were tested using fire refining techniques at field particle size, to determine coarse particle heterogeneity of the ores, and by gravity .concentration methods at 10 mesh particle size, to observe any particulate gold liberation. An overall sampling model is presented for the deposit based on the pooled test information, to reconcile the results of coarse particle heterogeneity testing and the fine particle 'liberation testing. The sampling model is used to recommend procedures to control the variability of gold grade estimation due to the fundamental error (nugget effect) during sampling, sample preparation and assaying of the ores and other fundamental variances. The technique of simplified quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) is used to provide an economic justification for implementation of. recommended improvements to field sampling practices.

Samples of clays , shales , and argillites from 21 locations were subjected to preliminary bench- scale tests for bloating properties , and several samples were tested for ceramic properties . Samples showing favorable bloating properties were further tested in a pilot - plant - scale rotary kiln . Physical characteristics and concrete -making properties of the bloated products were determined . The Decorah shale from one area made a suitable material for a lightweight aggregate ; however , the limestone layers in the formation must be eliminated or the resulting activated lime must be controlled by quenching .

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Based on thermodynamics of surfaces and a proposed two-dimensional state equation for surfaces, the relationship between the surface tension (Y) of a solution and the activity (a1) of its component (i) was derived: (1/Y)r2-.¬E (ai/Yl) The derived equation was verified with reported experimental data of water-alcohol systems and water-acetone system, the calculated results showed astonishing coincidence with experimental. Applications of the equation to the five matte systems Cu2S-FeS, Ni3S2-FeS, FeS-PbS, Cu2S-PbS and FeS-Cu22S-PbS also demonstrated that at given matte compositions the calculated surface tensions agreed with experimental fairy well.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.

The life cycle of a mining project begins with initial regional exploration and ends with mine closure and rehabilitation. Between resource definition and the commencement of mine construction is the study phase. In this phase technical concepts and processes are defined, evaluated and assessed with the aim of establishing whether the deposit is economically feasible. The study phase usually involves various steps from a concept/scoping study to prefeasibility and ultimately definitive feasibility study. The complete study phase can take several years. Although the costs for studies are low in comparison to actual construction and operating costs of a mining project, they are significant especially for junior exploration and mining companies advancing projects to the point of being funded.The studies aim to determine selected parameters for the project, eg mining and processing methods, operating strategy, etc and provide a roadmap for project development ahead. Although mining studies are of the utmost importance for the mining project and the project owner, they are usually carried out using a conventional engineering approach: the consultant or design engineer works to a defined scope of work. The resulting design might be based on good engineering, but might often also fail to provide the solution for the project owner that delivers the best shareholder value. An alternative to this more traditional approach to project evaluation is what we have termed a value engineering approach. Value engineering is a creative, organised effort, which in the case of a mining study analyses the requirements of the study for the purpose of achieving the essential outcomes with the highest shareholder value. The outcome of a study is a concept that delivers the highest achievable value of the resource project and shows the way ahead to realise this value. Through a group investigation by experienced, multi-disciplinary teams the value of the resource is improved through the study of alternative options, methods and processes. The scope of the study is not limited to a narrowly defined engineering scope, but to the creation of value.The study commences with the identification of key value drivers and risks, based on the available information (drill data, geotechnical data, metallurgical test work, etc). This enables the quantification of key uncertainties, risks and value adding opportunities. Study efforts concentrate on key value drivers and are not unnecessarily spent on side issues. Underground coal mines in Australia have embraced the use of various inertisation techniques both proactively and reactively. The use of such techniques can have a significant influence on ratios and trends used to monitor the status of the underground environment. Whilst control strategies should never be ignored in favour of preserving the integrity of ratios, the influence and significance of the changes likely to be seen should be anticipated and understood for reliable interpretation of the situation. "The sinter quantity and quality of limonite in the magnetite and hematite sintering models were studied and compared. For the sintering of magnetite, the results showed that the increase of limonite improved the permeability of sinter mixture, increased the sinter quantity and quality. The sinter strength and productivity were decreased when the proportion of limonite exceeded 50%. The appropriate proportion of limonite was 40%-50%. For the sintering of hematite, the sinter quantity and quality were first maintained at the same level thereafter declined, more obviously when the proportion of limonite exceeded 40%. The amount of calcium ferrite increased whose shape changed from acicular to leaflike and block gradually with the proportion of limonite increased from 0% to 80%.IntroductionWith the fierce competition of domestic and overseas iron markets in the twenty-first century, cheap ores such as limonite are used to be sintering raw materials to cut the costs of sinter and pig iron for steel making, and boosts the competitiveness of steel companies [1, 2]. In addition, as the reserve volume of hematite of high grade is reducing year by year, the usage amount of limonite in sintering are expanding in major domestic and international sintering plant [3, 4]. Sintering can be divided into two types, majoring in concentrates and fine ores, according to the different types of raw materials. The sintering characteristics of limonite in the two types above have been studied and compared in this paper, which makes a significant sense for the research of limonite sintering properties and guidance of ore proportioning in sintering plants."

The Grand Forks Energy Research Center and Commonwealth Edison of Chicago jointly conducted tests in which 400 tons each of subbituminous coal and lignite were dried in a commercial scale dryer, oil sprayed and cooled, then shipped in open-top rail cars from Pekin, IL to Grand Forks, ND and stockpiled. Cars containing raw coal and dried coal that had not been oil sprayed were also transported for comparative purposes. The tests were conducted in August and November of 1974. The subbituminous coal was dried from 26 to 16 pct moisture and the heating value was upgraded from 8,420 to 9,650 Btu/lb. The lignite was dried from 39 to 22 pct moisture and its heating value was increased from 6,420 to 8,300 Btu/lb. Before loading subbituminous coal was cooled to 115° F and sprayed with oil at a rate of from 2 to 6 gal/ton. Similarly, lignite was cooled to 85° F and oil sprayed at rates of from 1 to 2 gal/ton. Both shipments arrived in Grand Forks with a minimum of difficulty. The subbituminous coal was subjected to 2 inches of rain during transit with no change in average moisture content. The cars containing dried and oil treated coal had less material lost to wind than either cars containing raw or untreated dried coal. With both dried lignite and subbitnminous shipments, a moderate increase in temperature was measured during transit. With the subbituminous shipments, ignition occurred near poorly fitted bottom dump doors, but was limited to a very small area. The dried lignite was shipped when ambient temperatures were below freezing, and frozen coal was noted around the edge of the car. At Grand Forks, the coal was stockpiled using proven techniques and has remained stable to this date.

IN 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company's Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia, and an ore dressing group at the company's Port Hope refinery. Pilot plant operations were conducted at the Ottawa plant of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. under the general direction of C. S. Parsons, consultant on metallurgy and ore dressing for Eldorado. In mid-September, having compared results of the several research programs, Dr. Parsons recommended a process employing a carbonate or basic leach. He reported that, while the chemistry of the process had been proved, engineering of the flowsheet was incomplete, and he suggested that under normal conditions further pilot plant work at the Ace mine might be profitable. However, since this would involve a delay of 12 to 18 months in bringing the property into operation, he recommended that design of the concentrator proceed immediately. Concentrator capacity was determined by two considerations: 1) the amount of ore then available and 2) the expectation that continued improvements would be made in the ore dressing process as a result of the intensive research being carried out by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys.
