O fluxo simétrico e distribuição de temperatura uniforme são de grande importância no processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Beam Blank, porém a utilização de duas válvulas para alimentação do molde traz dificuldades operacionais relacionadas ao posicionamento das válvulas e controle de vazão. Neste sentido é interessante trabalhar com apenas uma válvula. Neste trabalho técnicas de modelagem física e matemática foram utilizadas para avaliar o fluxo de fluido no molde, comparando-se o caso em que se empregam duas válvulas tubulares, com aquele em que se utiliza apenas uma válvula. Verificou-se que esta última configuração resultou em uma mudança no comportamento do fluxo, aumento na profundidade de impacto, porém a velocidade na região do menisco não teve variação significativa em comparação com a utilização de duas válvulas tubulares.

Kaolin samples from Rio Capim Resources were treated in conventional and superconducting magnetic separators to study the main variables that influence the impurity removal process. Two coating clays and a delaminated clay were tested. The variables studied were retention time (cross-sectional velocity), magnetic-field intensity and matrix type. The feed brightness ranged, from 84.7% to 87.6% ISO, for the coating clays and ranged from 80.7% to 85.4% ISO for the delaminated clay. Using a conventional magnetic separator with an applied, field of 1.5 to 2.0 T (tesla), the brightness values were higher than 88% ISO for the unleached coating claw products and were higher than 87% ISO for the unleached delaminated product. With a maximum field intensity in the superconducting machine of 5.0T unleached brightness values higher than 88.5 % ISO were attained for both coating and delaminated clays.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a influência dos diversos aglomerantes nas propiedades mecânicas e no processo de redu?ão das pelotas auto-redutoras de cromita com o objetivo de obter uma boa resistência mecânica a quente, medidas após serem submetidas às temperaturas de 1173, 1273, 1373, 1473 e 1573K. Os aglomerantes ensaiados foram: bentonita, cal hidratada, melaço, carboxi-metil-celulose (CMC) e silicato de sódio. Inicialmente os materiais (cromita, ferro-silício, coque de petróleo e aglomerantes), foram caracterizados por análise química e granulométrica. Após isto, os materiais, foram aglomerados na forma de pelotas (P1 a P15), contendo teores variáveis de aglomerantes. Após a fabricação das pelotas, procedeu-se aos ensaios de laboratório; medindo-se a resistência a compressão da pelota verde, ao longo do tempo (por 28 dias), da pelota seca e após os ensaios de ciclos térmicos. Foram realizados também ensaios de crepitação e avaliação da redução à temperatura de 1773K. Após os ensaios ciclos térmicos e de redução, os produtos obtidos (escória e metal) foram analisados por MEV e EDS. A pelota P15 (4% de silicato de sódio como aglomerante) apresentou uma resistência a compressão, de pelota seca, de 5 kg-f/pelota, e após tratamento térmico às temperaturas de 1173 e 1273K, apresentou uma resistência a compressão de 15 e 15,5 kg-f/pelota, respectivamente. Nenhuma das pelotas ensaiadas apresentaram crepitação. A pelota P15 atingiu fração de reação unitária aos 10 minutos, a 1773K. Verificou-se também para estas condições a formação de escória, aos 3,5 minutos, prejudicando a reação CO/cromita.

New elements have been inserted in NiTi lately, resulting in ternary alloys with specific characteristics beyond Shape Memory Effect and Superelasticity. Among all others alloying elements, the Ag additions itself gives potential antibacterial activity to that smart material. So on, the elaboration procedures of ternary NiTiAg alloys was studied in order to obtain a melting procedure to ensure further studies on this alloy. Microstructural and thermal analyses were used to evaluate the VAR-remelting production of NiTiAg with 4.0% wt silver content. The microstructure is composed by a NiTi matrix, pure Ag precipitates, and, scarcely, TiC inclusions. Heat treatments at high temperature could not dilute those Ag particles, but could lead to the precipitation of new ones. The silver element reduces the temperature of the martensitic transformation, yielding a material with superelastic behavior, beyond induces the R-phase on cooling stage of this alloy.

THREE OF the gold mines in the Red Lake Camp operates fluid bed roasters in their milling circuits. The mines are Campbell Red Lake, Cochenour Willans, and Dickenson. The roasters are used for the autogenous roasting of a flotation concentrate for subsequent gold recovery by cyanidation. Cochenour and Dickenson operate single stage reactors, whilst Campbell use a two-stage system. Ore treated by the mines is similar in that the major part of the gold is associated with arsenopyrite. Other sulphides present are pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite and sphalerite. Gangue minerals are mainly quartz, with carbonates and talc. Mineralization is, for the most part, extremely fine, and there is intimate association between sulphides and quartz, so much so, th at a picked specimen of apparently massive arsenopyrite will frequently contain as much as 80 per cent gangue. The presence of considerable mineralization at the surface together with other favorable conditions suggested inclusion of the Nigger Jim diggings area in a comprehensive study of shallow lead deposits in southwestern Wisconsin. The area, which was the site of considerable shallow development some 60 to 70 years ago, offered the possibility of substantial quantities of lead at near-surface horizons. The investigation included completion of 30 churn-drill holes totaling 1,808 feet of drilling, 2 diamond-drill holes totaling 164.5 feet of drilling, and 25 feet of test pitting in two excavations. The degree of mineralization was determined in an area l,500 feet long and 150 to 300 feet wide along a mineralized trend that has not been investigated beyond the limits of the zone drilled by the Bureau of Mines.

Nas aciarias que operam com forno elétrico a arco (FEA) existe o interesse de garantir uma maior estabilidade ao arco elétrico para almejar uma menor distorção no sistema elétrico, consequentemente, uma redução no consumo de energia elétrica. A prática da escória espumante no refino primário do aço líquido melhora consideravelmente a eficiência da transferência de energia do arco elétrico para a carga e promove um menor consumo do refratário, entre outras vantagens. Além disso, a espumação da escória aumenta a estabilidade do arco elétrico, por reduzir o total de distorção harmônica (THD) entre as fases do FEA. No presente trabalho foram coletadas informações de composição química da escória e parâmetros elétricos de 156 corridas de um FEA, de um padrão de carga específico. Com os dados de composição química pode ser determinado o teor de FeO e basicidade da escória espumante que propiciaram uma redução do THD e no consumo de energia elétrica do FEA. Calculou-se o índice de espumação das escórias. O aumento do índice de espumação proporcionou a queda do THD. A redução do THD mostrou uma redução da energia elétrica consumida na etapa de refino do FEA.

The direct dissolution of zinc in an organic solution of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and kerosene was studied. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals involved in the anodic step of the galvanic stripping process. Results showed that metallic zinc does dissolve spontaneously at ambient temperature by an electrochemical mechanism and the presence of additional oxygen activated the process. When oxygen was removed by prior nitrogen sparging, dissolution did not occur indicating a depolarizing cathodic reaction is necessary. The concentration of water in the organic also affected the rate of dissolution. A factorially designed experiment was made using four variables at two levels selected by evaluating results from previous screening tests. D2EHPA concentration, surface area and agitation were all found to be significant for the values chosen. Temperature was less significant and it was found that zinc dissolution is probably a diffusion or mixed controlled process, as indicated by the calculated activation energy of 6 kcal/mole.

Bureau of Mines exploration at the property of the Tulare County Tungsten Mines was by core drilling from the surface from May 16, 1950, to July 13, 1950. The property is in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, 18 miles northeast of Lindsay, Calif. It has been in almost continuous production since 1942 and has produced 40,831 units of tungsten trioxide (W03) with a grade of approximately 67 percent. The work performed comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and diamond drilling the area adjacent to the mine workings. Ten holes were drilled for a total of 1,824 feet. Ore reserves were found to be confined to tactite zones in a surface area approximately 250 by 400 feet and extending downward about 350 feet.

During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.

The San Anconio mine, owned by San Antonio Gold Mines, Limited, is located on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg, and about one hundred miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. The three claims which formed the original San Antonio group were staked in 1911. Subsequent additions to the Company's property have in-creased their holdings co thirteen claims. Preliminary development of the property took place between 1925 and 1930. The major ore discovery during this period was the 16 vein. The mine was closed in September, 1930, but re-opened in April, 1932, since which rime it has been in continuous operation. In 1933, a development of special importance was that of the 26 vein. The mill capacity, originally designed for 150 tons, was increased to-wards the end of 1933 to 170 tons. With highly satisfactory mine development, mill enlargement to approximately 300 tons was made possible. The Company has financed the additions and improvements from mine production. Iris of interest to note that San Antonio is the first gold mine in Manitoba to pay a dividend. The first dividend was paid to the shareholders in March, 1934, and the fourth was recently declared. Electric power is transmitted to the property from the Great Falls plant of the Manitoba Power Company over a 66,000-volt transmission line approximately 62 miles long. The old camps, which had been in use since work on the property was started, in 1927, were demolished in the spring of 1934, and new camps were built on the Ross dam. Lumber for these buildings was out at the Company's saw-mill on Gold creek, eight miles from the mine. Two bunk-houses with a capacity of 72 men each were constructed, also a dining room co accommodate 144 men, a store, staff house, hospital, burcher shop, and warehouse. The camp buildings are all steam-heated from an electric boiler. They are all insulated on walls, roofs, and floors with a heavy building board, and are covered on the outside walls with asbestos siding, and on the roofs with corrugated iron. A community of about 800 persons has grown up around the mine, at Bissert. Attention has been given co their social interests, and the management of the mine has assisted its employees co build a community hall, which is used for dances, picture shows, and other entertainments and amusements. A two-room school, with an attendance of 50 pupils, is supported by Company employees. In addition, picnics, boxing contests, and hockey games are encouraged among the employees.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. Nickel smelting and converting can be viewed as processes in which iron is either partitioned or transported between matte and slag. Metal recovery depends on the mass of iron transported to slag, the thermodynamic environment in which the transport is made, and the extent to which the slag, once formed, is left in contact with the matte. The importance of these effects is discussed with reference to a new equation which describes metal recovery in terms of a mass balance and a thermodynamically related parameter which is easily measured in practice.

Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

Reutilization of waste printed circuit boards (PCB) can not only prevent potential environmental pollution, but also achieve recycling of secondary resources. Study on recycling of discarded PCB belongs to the front edge of environmental pollution prevention and resource recycling. In order to effectively crushing waste PCB, and solve the problem of secondary pollution of fugitive odor and dust during the crushing process, a wet impacting crusher was adopted to achieve comminution liberation of PCB in water medium. 96.79% of the crushed yield was distributed in ?2mm, and metal took 97.18% in this grade of production. Size distribution of PCB particles was characterized double peaks at the sizes of ?1+0.5mm and ?0.074mm. A double Rosin-Rammler function, is called DRR function, is put forward to describe the size distribution of PCB particles. The DRR function of cumulative weight percentage oversize of PCB was non-liner fitted by self-defining DRR function of the Origin 7.0. The evaluation indexes of the fitting results are the correlation coefficients R2 of 0.9994 and residual E of 0.18671, those show that DRR function is perfectly accurate. Based on the research the mechanical separation and material properties of PCB, a wet process of reclaiming metals from PCB using a new style separator ? tapered diameter separation bed (TDSB) in water medium was designed, and the related separation mechanism was studied. The fluid field of the tapered diameter separation equipment was simulated by the Ansys Flotran software, the variation laws of the velocity in each position in the fluid field as well as the equation of axial distribution sectional max velocity were analysed according to the simulation result, the stress change and motion trajectory of the pellet in the certain fluid field were analysed. The results show that the expanding tubular structure of the varied diameter separation bed indicates gradually decreasing velocity of water flow along the axis, assuming a certain angle in the bed, as a result of the gravity?s influence, and there was corresponding change to the distribution of the flow velocity, thus the whole formed a special fluid field where velocity variations exist in different positions. When the material passed through the fluid field along with the water flow, as a result of the difference to the particle density, the granularity and the shape, there would appear the difference to the motion trajectory as well as the movement distance under the action of the fluid: The lower density materials discharge along with water flow, but the higher density materials would be kept in bottom of the bed and discharge through material mouth. Therefore, light and heavy products were separated effectively according to the density. Using tapered diameter separation bed to process the ?1mm size crushed material of waste printed circuit boards, with the discharge of water 5.5m3/h, feed-rate of the material 250g/min and with an obliquity 35°, product with 93.92% in integration efficiency and 93.73% in recovery ratio of the metal were obtained by the primary separation. Compared with other mechanical methods, the range of particle size was broaden using the TDSB to recovery metals from PCB, and lower limit size of separation almost approach to 0. An innovative process of ?wet impact crushing+ classifying+ tapered diameter separation? recycling metals from waste PCB was developed.

Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Montana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich2 counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. "Contact-angle and flotation techniques were used to evaluate the influence of oxygen - both that inherent in the coal and that introduced by ambient temperature, aqueous oxidation - on a wide range of coal ranks. Oxidation was found to decrease the hydrophobicity and floatability of coal; with the effect being minor for coals of high rank but becoming increasingly important as the rank of coal is reduced. As an approximation, oxidation makes a coal behave as if it were one of lower rank. Frother only flotation' of coal· correlates with the captive-bubble contact angle whereas when oil is used as a collector, the flotation appears to follow the pattern shown by the water sessile drop on a fresh, un-reagentized coal surface. Coal recovery lost through oxidation may often be recovered by use of a variety of collectors, of which No. 2 foe! oil is among the best of those reagents tested. A simple alkali-extraction test may be used to estimate the influence of oxidation on coal preparation processes and use.INTRODUCTIONThe hydrophobicity of coal is not only a function of its rank but also of the extent of oxidation of the coal during and subsequent to its formation. Weathering and oxidation processes may proceed in-situ for coal deposits that outcrop near the earth's surface, or the oxidation of the coal particles may occur during mining, stockpiling or processing. Such oxidation, whether it affects the bulk-coal sample or on1y a thin outer layer on the coal surface, can dramatically influence the wettability of the particle and hence such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation and dispersion.Many of the studies made on the oxidation of coals ·were designed to study its effect on flotation, coking or pyrolysis. The. present study 'is directed exclusively toward the effect of oxidation on the hydrophobicity and floatability of the coal. One of the first studies of the effect of oxidation on coal flotation was that of Sun [l] who found that as oxidation proceeds, coal becomes progressively more hydrophilic. Low-temperature oxidation (100-150°C for 250 h) generally lowered the coal floatability with an oily collector only slightly, but more extensive oxidation (200- 3500 C for 250 h) reduced coal floatability seriously. Sun also found that cationic amines were effective collectors for the oxidized coal which infers that oxidation makes the coal more negative in solution. He attributed the loss of floatability to be due to the accumulation of water-insoluble oxidation products at the coal surface. Gayle et al. [2] found that oxidation adversely affected coal flotation when an aliphatic-alcohol frother was used, though a small amount of oxidation appeared to improve the floatability of some coals using a kerosene-pine oil, collector-frother mixture in pilot-plant testing. Prolonged oxidation adversely affected the flotation recovery of the coals tested, the effect being more pronounced when an alcoholic-type frother only was used. They also noted that the reduction in floatability of lower rank bituminous coals was more affected by oxidation than was that of higher rank bituminous coals."
