The kinetics of the inter granular penetration and embrittlement of [100] tilt boundaries in 99.998 pct pure nickel upon exposure to bismuth-rich Ni-Bi liquids have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 900°C. The kinetics of penetration are parabolic in time at constant temperature over most of the temperature range. In a series of 43-deg bicrystals the rate of penetration is anisotropic with respect to the direction of penetration into the grain boundaries. In lower-angle bicrystals the penetration rate is isotropic. The rate of penetration decreases with tilt angle at 700°C. The activation energy for penetration in the 43-deg bicrystals is 42 kcal per g-atom independent of direction. It is concluded that the intergranular penetration and embrittlement in the presence of the liquid proceeds by a grain boundary diffusion process and not by the intrusion of a liquid film. This was confirmed by a determination that the kinetics of penetration and embrittlement were the same in the 43-deg bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth vapor under conditions such that no bulk liquid phase would be thermodynamically stable. WhEN solid metals are exposed to a corrosive liquid-metal environment, the grain boundaries are sites of preferential attack. Depending on the temperature, the composition of the liquid, and the composition, structure, and state of stress of the solid, a number of modes of attack are possible. This paper reports a study of the kinetics of intergranular penetration and embrittlement of high-purity nickel bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth which, together with an earlier study by Cheney, Hochgraf, and Spencer,&apos; demonstrates that there are at least two modes of intergranular attack possible in the Ni-Bi system. In the study by Cheney et al., columnar-grain specimens of 99.5 pct pure nickel were exposed to liquid bismuth presaturated with nickel in the temperature range 670" to 1050°C. They found that the majority of the boundaries, which were predominantely high-angle boundaries, were penetrated by capillary liquid films, the attack proceeding by a process which will be termed grain boundary wetting. This process occurs in a stress-free solid when twice the liquid-solid surface tension is less than the surface tension of the grain boundary,* i.e., when 2yLs < YGB In this case the penetration of the grain boundary by the liquid occurs at a relatively rapid rate, resulting in the severe embrittlement of a polycrystalline solid. Grain boundary wetting is a common mode of intergranular attack in systems in which the lower melting component is relatively insoluble in the solid, but the solid has an appreciable solubility in the liquid, for example, the Ni-Bi system, Fig. 1. In systems of this type at temperatures above the range of stability of any intermetallic phases, once the liquid is saturated with respect to the solid so that no gross solution occurs, chemical gradients are small, and surface tensions become major driving forces for attack, provided the solid is stress-free. The results of Cheney et al. appear to be typical of those encountered when grain boundary wetting occurs.&apos; Capillary films were observed in the boundaries after quenching from the exposure temperature. The mean depth of penetration increased linearly with time, and the activation energy for the process was found to be 22 kcal per g-atom. In a study of the Cu-Bi system Yukawa and sinott4 found that the depth of penetration of bismuth into high-purity copper bicrystals of orientations from 22 to 63 deg of tilt about (100) at 649°C ranged from 0.05 to 0.25 in. after a 12-hr anneal. This corresponds to a linear rate of 6 to 15 X 10~6 cm per sec. At the same reduced temperature of 0.68 the rate for the Ni-Bi system&apos; was 7 x lo-&apos; cm per sec. In another study of the Cu-Bi system, Scheil and schess15 determined the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in hot-worked commercial rod. While there were several complicating factors present in this study, there is general agreement with the above results. The kinetics of penetration were linear, the activation energy was 20 kcal per g-atom, and at 650°C the rate of wetting was 2 to 5 x 10-6 cm per sec. The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite that is mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90 wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct. At this stage, the product could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. The mineralogical characteristics of the reduced product are not amenable to magnetic separation for iron recovery. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Special attention has been paid to lower the alkali content of the reduced material. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by an acid-leach process. This paper describes the successful efforts of iron and alumina recovery.

Wetlands can be constructed inexpensively on mined lands to treat small flows of acid mine water. Metals are removed from the water by the wetland vegetation and indigenous bacteria. Full-scale field tests initiated at over 20 mine sites during 1984 and 1985 indicate that water quality can be upgraded to meet discharge standards with relatively minor maintenance requirements. Iron concentrations of 25-85 mg/L in the influent water fall to less than 2 mg/L during flow through a small wetland. Manganese can also be removed, though somewhat less efficiently. At the discharge, pH is easily raised to 6 by flow over limestone.

It then outlines the performance characteristics and inherent problems of the traditional 12-degree, tapered connection, blade-type insert bits. (an Italian government agency) under the joint ownership of Federal Resources Corporation, Salt Lake City (51%), and Consolidated Canadian Faraday Limited (49%). At present, the mine is producing approximately 2 pounds per ton (.1% U3O8) at the rate of 60,000 pounds per month. The mine employs about 400 employees.Brief Description of Geology, Mining Methods and EquipmentGeologyThe Grenville metasediments of the mine area are chiefly paragneiss, amphobolite and some carbonate (marble) rocks, which were intruded by a basic rock, altered to a metagabbrometadiorite. These formations are generally concordant, striking east to northeast and dipping 45 to 60 degrees to the south. Locally, the metagabbro is often discordant. The above group of rocks (mixed hybrid gneisses) forms the hanging wall of the south-dipping Faraday granite sheet and was intruded by nepheline syenite, syenite and granite. The ore occurs in the granite-syenite-pegmatite dykes that are probably genetically related to the Faraday granite. The ore shoots are erratically distributed within the pegmatite bodies, mainly on the hanging or footwalls but also medially. Their size varies from 50 to 350 feet in length, 5 to 40 feet in width and 50 to 200 feet in height. The ore occurs most frequently in a medium-grained granite or syenite, well hematized with 10 to 30% mafic crystals of pyroxene, amphibole and/or relics of the host rock."

This report provides information on the techniques and results obtained on representative waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. Records show that waterflooding was begun as early as 1935, but not until 1948 was the method expanded. The greater depths to the oil-producing formations in this area compared to those in eastern Kansas undoubtedly delayed the widespread use of secondary-recovery methods. This report presents a discussion of four waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. The locations of these projects are shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation from 1 to 7 years and have produced more than 1 million barrels of additional oil by injecting 11.5 million barrels of water. The projects are designed to take advantage of elevation and height of the separator tank to collect by gravity flow the produced brine at the respective treating or storage tanks. The closed-type water system is used on three of the projects and an open-type water conditioning system on the fourth. On one of the projects, which was drilled along a narrow shoestring formation, alternate well, were converted to input wells. However, most of the input wells for flooding converted producing wells.

Ores containing uranium and vanadium minerals have been mined from the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation from many localities in the Colorado Plateau region since about 1900. The most productive deposits are in a relatively small area in Southwestern Colorado referred to as the Uravan mineral belt. The mineral belt is a narrow elongate area in which uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash have a closer spacing, larger size, and higher grade than those in adjoining areas. Pre- 1948 ore production from the mineral belt was 655,000 tons averaging 1.91 per cent V2O5 and 0.28 per cent U3O8. Production during the 1948 to 1964 period was 7,900,000 tons of ore averaging 1.46 per cent V2O5 and 0.27 per cent U3O8. The ore deposits occur principally in the uppermost sandstone unit of the Salt Wash. This unit consists of sandstone lenses formed by a system of aggrading braided streams flowing in an easterly direction generally normal to the mineral belt. These lenses, referred to as channels, are as much as one mile in width and average about 50 feet in thickness and can be traced for several miles along their courses. Areas favorable for one deposits are recognized principally by the following criteria: ( 1) a host sandstone thickness of over 30 feet, (2) the presence of carbonaceous material in the host sandstone, and ( 3) gray mudstones and clays associated with the ore-bearing sandstone. The ore minerals are believed to have been precipitated from laterally migrating solutions; there is no apparent genetic relationship between ore deposits and tectonic structural features. Exploratory and development drilling from the surface is conducted in three phases: first, wide-spaced drilling to find and outline favorable channels; second, moderate-spaced drilling in favorable ground to locate ore deposits; and third, close-spaced drilling to block-out ore. Long-hole drilling from underground stations is used to find and delineate extensions of ore bodies being mined. Due to intense production since 1948 from shallow deposits, best potential for new deposits exists in areas where the ore-bearing unit is 600 to 800 feet deep.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve resource conservation, mine planning and development, is currently investigating the loading behavior of pillars in multiple-seam developments. The simultaneous mining of two or more coalbeds may cause instability between room-and-pillar operations resulting in an interaction known as pillar load transfer. Although pillars may be adequately designed for single-seam mining, the development of a second seam may complicate loading conditions in both operations. If pillars are not adequately designed to contend with this load transfer, failure of the mine structure may result. To improve multiple-seam development and pillar design, the Bureau studied the loading characteristics of pillars in three separate multiple-seam operations. In all three cases, instrumented pillars recorded increasing pressure after development of the second seam. Increases in the average pillar pressure ranged from 7 to 110 pct over predicted overburden loads. An analysis of pillar loading before and after second-seam mining indicates that the ratio of overburden to innerburden thickness is a critical factor influencing load transfer. Based on this relationship, safety factors for case study pillars are calculated and alternative design considerations are discussed.

This paper provides an understanding of the behavior and potential damage of homes resulting from sag-type mine subsidence. This is done with extensive research of numerous case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The house response to subsidence-induced ground displacements are summarized and evaluated. A damage level criteria, specifically developed for residential structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

An inactive mining operation in northern California is known to be a source of acid mine drainage and heavy metals which have impacted adjacent creeks. Elevated concentrations of copper and zinc are a concern to aquatic populations, particularly steelhead trout and salmon downstream in the Sacramento River. Previous regional geological surveys of mineralization by the U.S. Geological Survey located and mapped outcrops of massive sulfides and gossan. Recent investigations indicate that a substantial amount of the metals in the local creeks are due to natural causes. The investigations include locating and mapping surface and subsurface minerals, soil and water sampling, and chemical analysis. Groundwater, seeps, and surface water were also sampled and analyzed. A water balance was conducted on a sub-basin level following delineation of surface water drainage and groundwater divides. A chemical mass balance incorporated metal concentrations and water volumes and was then used with other data to determine the contribution of metals from natural versus mining-related causes.

The Bureau of Mines derived information on the softening characteristics of both unfired and indurated iron ore pellets as measured by hot compression strength in a laboratory study. A surprisingly high hot strength (240 1b per ½ -inch spheroid) was developed by unfired magnetite pellets near 900° C; lesser maxima were developed by pellets made from hematite and specularite concentrates near 1,000° C. Those from goethite remained weak throughout the pre induration heating. Fully indurated commercial pellets retain a high resistance to softening when heated in air. On the contrary, in a hot reduing atmosphere their high cold crushing strength dissipates rapidly. At 1,000° C, for example, the average compression strength of seven different commercial pellets was 110 lb; at 1,100° C, the hot strength was only 60 lb. After a rather sharp initial drop, the loss of strength with increase of temperature was gradual. There was no sudden collapse, nor any significant difference, in behavior of commercial pellets whether made from magnetite or hematite concentrates.

This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. This study suggests that to improve copper and gold flotation from clay ores, clay dispersion in conjunction with the minimisation of iron contamination may be required.CITATION:Wei, R, Peng, Y and Seaman, D, 2013. AT the Sladen-Malartic mine, a number of orebodies have been mined, some by shrinkage and others by open sub-level scopes, from which the ore is handled either through a grizzly system or by mechanical loaders. This paper deals with the comparative costs and relative merits of the two handling arrangements. The facts brought out in this comparison have a bearing on the selection of a proper handling method. The mine is in Fourniere township, northwestern Quebec, about forty miles east of the town of Rouyn. It is served by the Rouyn-Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railways. Two vertical three-compartment shafts give access to the present workings. No. 1 shaft, at which the plant is centralized, is the main hoisting shaft, with five levels to 950 feet. No. 2 shaft, 2,400 feet east of No. 1, is under development, with four levels to 725 feet. At the main shaft, the ore is hand-trammed in 1 1/2 tons cars from the scopes to the stations o:i each level and hoisted in cages to surface at a rope speed of 900 feet per minute. Air-operated tipples are used to dump the ore through grizzlies of 14-inch openings into a surface bin of 150 tons capacity. The ore hoisted at No. 2 shaft is trucked from the headframe bin to the mill. Milling commenced in January, 1938, ar a daily rate of 250 tons. Within two months this rate was increased to the unit&apos;s maximum capacity of 325 tons. A second unit to treat a further 325 tons daily was installed in April, 1939. The orebodies mined at No. 1 shaft are parts of a silicified zone at the contact between syenite porphyry and greywacke. The zone is ten co sixty feet wide, strikes easterly, and dips to the south at 55 to 85 degrees. The hanging-wall of the zone is marked, though not precisely, by a strong gouge fault. Locally, the boundary of silicification may be as much as twenty feet either above or below the fault, but for practical mining purposes the fault is the hanging-wall of the ore-zone. The footwall roughly parallels the fault, but as an assay wall it is usually irregular in detail. The ore is dense and hard, a siliceous replacement of both porphyry and greywacke, mineralized with fine disseminated pyrite.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 78,000-acre Garns Mountain study area in southeastern Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. It is underlain by Paleozoic to Mesozoic-age sedimentary rocks about 11,000 feet thick. Rocks have been faulted, offset, and folded as part of the northerly-trending Idaho-Wyoming Overthrust Belt. Study area mineral occurrences are: phosphate in the Permian Phosphoria Formation; coal in the Cretaceous Frontier end Bear River Formations; and uranium in carbonaceous and phosphate-bearing shales and coal of these formations. Four zones of phosphate are estimated to contain about 528 mitt ion tons of rock with over 10% P205; samples of phosphate-rich rock also contained as much as 3950 ppm chromium, 3280 ppm vanadium, 23 ppm gallium, and 5540 ppm zinc. Fragments of poor-quality coal and carbonaceous shale were found in the area; coal was mined near the northeast border. Uranium content up to 0.016% U3O8 is in carbon-rich shales. Oil and gas were drilled for, with minimal success, in folded sedimentary rocks (frontier and Nugget Sandstone) in the Horseshoe anticline, near the east border. Examined workings included 12 dozer cuts, 4 trenches, 2 prospect pits, and 2 caved adits. No production is known, and no leases or claims are held for the area.

Because State and Federal agencies have limited the amount of sulfur oxides that can be discharged to the atmosphere, most copper smelters plan to convert the S02 in offgases to sulfuric acid. In some cases, however, it might be preferable to use a nonsmelting method to fix the sulfur in the form of a discardable product. Research by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that sulfur in copper concentrate can be converted into insoluble anhydrite (CaS04) by roasting the concentrate with lime (CaO). After leaching the calcine to recover metal values, the residue may be discarded without harm to the environment. The process can use a rougher flotation product, thus reducing separation costs and saving valuable minerals (for example, molybdenite) that are now lost in making cleaner concentrate. In tests, rougher concentrate was pelletized with the theoretical amount of lime and roasted for 1 hour in a 6-1/2-inch-ID by 11-foot-long rotary kiln at 700° C. Sulfur retention was about 97 percent. Leaching the calcine with 20 percent RCI extracted approximately 99 percent of the copper, 73 percent of the iron, and 91 percent of the molybdenum. After the molybdenum was removed from the leach solution by adsorption on activated carbon, copper with a purity in excess of 99 percent was obtained by cementation on sponge iron. The strip solution then could be spray-roasted at 500° C to recover the RCI for recycle and obtain F2O3 as a byproduct.

In response to numerous requests from metallurgists and operators for information regarding the status of the sulphur dioxide leaching process , developed at the Southwest experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , Tucson , Ariz . , the following statement has been prepared . A more complete report is now in course of publication and will appear as Technical Paper 312. This process was devised to provide a cheap and efficient method for treating the so- called "porphyry " copper ores of the Southwest which generally contain both " sulphide " and "nonsulphide " copper minerals , mixed in such proportions that they can only be satisfactorily treated by a method which will concurrently recover both the sulphide copper and the nonsulphide copper . The latter term has been adopted to include all the minerals commonly referred to in operating phraseology in the mills of the Southwest as " oxidized" , " oxide " , or " soluble " copper . confident that the sulphide dioxide leaching process , as developed by us with the cooperation of the Miami Copper Co. and the Arizona Copper Co. , is suitable and commercially available for a wide range of ores .

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers&apos; demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. "In response to an increasing demand of anchored structures for underground space and transportation infrastructure in China, an innovative underreamed ground anchorage system was created. The novel anchorage system has provided more efficient functions with higher capacity at lower cost, because of the enlarged cylindrical body (known as ECB) sealed in capsule at bottom of anchorage. This paper presents the detailed structure of innovative anchorage system and its special features. To investigate the bearing mechanism of new anchorage, we evaluate its performance and failure mode based on the experimental results, and also indicate its strain-hardening load-displacement relationship. Unlike the shaft anchorages, it is identified no overall failure to be found in soil surrounding the underreamed anchorage. More importantly, the anchorage capacity is governed by the base resistance, which takes more than 80% of total pullout capacity resulting from the contribution of ECB. Finally a case history of anti-floating project introduces the new combined construction approach and procedure, which has provided the contribution to the quality control and cost efficiency.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe construction boom over two decades in China has resulted in an increasing demand for underground space and slope stability. The infrastructures market requires the more efficient anchorage systems for retaining structures, resisting uplift forces and slope protection. The major concern focuses on gaining higher capacity and lower cost resulted from perfecting anchorage systems. There are three main anchorage systems designed to achieve the above objectives: ? single bore multiple anchorage system (Barley 1997), ? regroutable anchorage system (Smoltczyk 1991), ? underreamed anchorage systems (Xanthakos 1991). Generally, the concept ? comparing with the other two, can be more competitive due to its distinct advantages. To improve the performance and durability of ground anchorages under the complex geological conditions and diversified engineering requirements, a number of different underreamed anchorage technologies had been used, which included cone - shape anchorage described by Liao, Wu and Shu (1997) in Taiwan, Soilex anchorage developed in Sweden (Massarsch et al. 1997), Soletanche anchorage proposed in France, blasting anchorage used in Czechoslovakia (Hobst and Zajic 1986), jet-grouting anchorage innovated in Europe (Anon 1988), as well as deep mixing anchorage created in Japan (Cheng et al. 2000).The underreamed anchorage systems have the remarkable advantages compared to the shaft anchorage system. However, there are also some weaknesses inherent in the underreamed systems. For instance, the mechanical underreamed anchorage is unsuitable in sand or waterbearing ground, because the enlarged hole is easy to collapse, and it is hard to ensure the quality of anchorages. On the other hand, relying on the blasting in deep hole, the geometrical space and dimension of enlarged hole is uncontrollable, meanwhile, the continuous blasting operations may easily cause the serious ground deformation and the negative effects to the completed anchorages."
